We address the problem of estimating the phase phi given N copies of the phase rotation gate u(phi). We consider, for the first time, the optimization of the general case where the circuit consists of an arbitrary input state, followed by any arrangement of the N phase rotations interspersed with arbitrary quantum operations, and ending with a POVM. Using the polynomial method, we show that, in all cases where the measure of quality of the estimate phi' for phi depends only on the difference phi'-phi, the optimal scheme has a very simple fixed form. This implies that an optimal general phase estimation procedure can be found by just optimizing the amplitudes of the initial state.
Using a circuit QED device, we present a theoretical study of real-time quantum state estimation via quantum Bayesian approach. Suitable conditions under which the Bayesian approach can accurately update the density matrix of the qubit are analyzed. We also consider the correlation between some basic and physically meaningful parameters of the circuit QED and the performance of the Bayesian approach. Our results advance the understanding of quantum Bayesian approach and pave the way to study quantum feedback control and adaptive control.
A significant problem for current quantum computers is noise. While there are many distinct noise channels, the depolarizing noise model often appropriately describes average noise for large circuits involving many qubits and gates. We present a method to mitigate the depolarizing noise by first estimating its rate with a noise-estimation circuit and then correcting the output of the target circuit using the estimated rate. The method is experimentally validated on the simulation of the Heisenberg model. We find that our approach in combination with readout-error correction, randomized compili…
This study presents a quantum circuit for estimating the pi value using arithmetic circuits and by quantum amplitude estimation. We review two types of quantum multipliers and propose quantum squaring circuits based on the multiplier as basic arithmetic circuits required for performing quantum computations. The squarer realized by a quantum adder with the gate size of $ O(n) $ requires $ O(n^2) $ gates and at least one ancillary qubits, while that realized by using quantum Fourier transform (QFT) requires $ O(n^3) $ gates without ancillary qubit. The proposed quantum circuit to estimate pi is …
We propose a method to map the conventional optical interferometry setup into quantum circuits. The unknown phase shift inside a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the presence of photon loss is estimated by simulating the quantum circuits. For this aim, we use the Bayesian approach in which the likelihood functions are needed, and they are obtained by simulating the appropriate quantum circuits. The precision of four different definite photon-number states of light, which all possess six photons, is compared. In addition, the fisher information for the four definite photon-number states in the se…

Outcome probability estimation via classical methods is an important task for validating quantum computing devices. Outcome probabilities of any quantum circuit can be estimated using Monte Carlo sampling, where the amount of negativity present in the circuit frame representation quantifies the overhead on the number of samples required to achieve a certain precision. In this paper, we propose two classical sub-routines: circuit gate merging and frame optimisation, which optimise the circuit representation to reduce the sampling overhead. We show that the runtimes of both sub-routines scale po…
Randomized benchmarking is a useful scheme for evaluation the average fidelity of a noisy quantum circuit. However, it is insensitive to the unitary error. Here, we propose a method of randomized benchmarking in which a unitary t-design is applied and by which the unitary error estimation can be converted to analysis of pseudo-randomness on a set of unitary operators. We give a bound on the number of randomized benchmarking sequences, when performing a unitary t-design on n-qubit d-dimensional system. By applying local random unitary operators, a decomposition of a unitary t-design, the bound …
Designing high-precision and efficient schemes is of crucial importance for quantum parameter estimation in practice. The estimation scheme based on continuous quantum measurement is one possible type of this, which looks also the most natural choice in case such as continuous dynamical process. In this work we specify the study to the stat-of-the-art superconducting circuit quantum-electrodynamics (QED) system, where the high-quality continuous measurement has been extensively exploited in the past decade. Within the framework of Bayesian estimation and particularly using the quantum Bayesian…
Conventional computers have evolved to device components that demonstrate failure rates of 1e-17 or less, while current quantum computing devices typically exhibit error rates of 1e-2 or greater. This raises concerns about the reliability and reproducibility of the results obtained from quantum computers. The problem is highlighted by experimental observation that today's NISQ devices are inherently unstable. Remote quantum cloud servers typically do not provide users with the ability to calibrate the device themselves. Using inaccurate characterization data for error mitigation can have devas…
Bounds on the ultimate precision attainable in the estimation of a parameter in Gaussian quantum metrology are obtained when the average number of bosonic probes is fixed. We identify the optimal input probe state among generic (mixed in general) Gaussian states with a fixed average number of probe photons for the estimation of a parameter contained in a generic multimode interferometric optical circuit, namely, a passive linear circuit preserving the total number of photons. The optimal Gaussian input state is essentially a single-mode squeezed vacuum, and the ultimate precision is achieved b…
We report optimal and asymptotically optimal reversible circuits composed of NOT, CNOT, and Toffoli (NCT) gates, keeping the count by the subsets of the gate types used. This study fine tunes the circuit complexity figures for the realization of reversible functions via reversible NCT circuits. An important consequence is a result on the limitation of the use of the $T$-count quantum circuit metric popular in applications.
Learning low dimensional representation is a crucial issue for many machine learning tasks such as pattern recognition and image retrieval. In this article, we present a quantum algorithm and a quantum circuit to efficiently perform A-Optimal Projection for dimensionality reduction. Compared with the best-know classical algorithms, the quantum A-Optimal Projection (QAOP) algorithm shows an exponential speedup in both the original feature space dimension $n$ and the reduced feature space dimension $k$. We show that the space and time complexity of the QAOP circuit are $O\left[ {{{\log }_2}\left…
Variational (or, parameterized) quantum circuits are quantum circuits that contain real-number parameters, that need to be optimized/"trained" in order to achieve the desired quantum-computational effect. For that training, analytic derivatives (as opposed to numerical derivation) are useful. Parameter shift rules have received attention as a way to obtain analytic derivatives, via statistical estimators. In this paper, using Fourier Analysis, we characterize the set of all shift rules that realize a given fixed partial derivative of a multi-parameter VQC. Then, using Convex Optimization, we s…
Surface codes exploit topological protection to increase error resilience in quantum computing devices and can in principle be implemented in existing hardware. They are one of the most promising candidates for active error correction, not least due to a polynomial-time decoding algorithm which admits one of the highest predicted error thresholds. We consider the dependence of this threshold on underlying assumptions including different noise models, and analyze the performance of a minimum weight perfect matching (MWPM) decoding compared to a mathematically optimal maximum likelihood (ML) dec…
Amplitude estimation is a fundamental quantum algorithmic primitive that enables quantum computers to achieve quadratic speedups for a large class of statistical estimation problems, including Monte Carlo methods. The main drawback from the perspective of near term hardware implementations is that the amplitude estimation algorithm requires very deep quantum circuits. Recent works have succeeded in somewhat reducing the necessary resources for such algorithms, by trading off some of the speedup for lower depth circuits, but high quality qubits are still needed for demonstrating such algorithms…
We present a novel method for determining gradients of parameterised quantum circuits (PQCs) in hybrid quantum-classical machine learning models by applying the multivariate version of the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) algorithm. The gradients of PQC layers can be calculated with an overhead of two evaluations per circuit per forward-pass independent of the number of circuit parameters, compared to the linear scaling of the parameter shift rule. These are then used in the backpropagation algorithm by applying the chain rule. We compare our method to the parameter sh…
In circuit QED, a Rabi model can be derived by truncating the Hilbert space of the anharmonic qubit coupled to a linear, reactive environment. This truncation breaks the gauge invariance present in the full Hamiltonian. We analyze the determination of an optimal gauge such that the differences between the truncated and the full Hamiltonian are minimized. Here, we derive a simple criterion for the optimal gauge. We find that it is determined by the ratio of the anharmonicity of the qubit to an averaged environmental frequency. We demonstrate that the usual choices of flux and charge gauge are n…
Investigating the classical simulability of quantum circuits provides a promising avenue towards understanding the computational power of quantum systems. Whether a class of quantum circuits can be efficiently simulated with a probabilistic classical computer, or is provably hard to simulate, depends quite critically on the precise notion of "classical simulation" and in particular on the required accuracy. We argue that a notion of classical simulation, which we call epsilon-simulation, captures the essence of possessing "equivalent computational power" as the quantum system it simulates: It …
Quantum phase estimation is the workhorse behind any quantum algorithm and a promising method for determining ground state energies of strongly correlated quantum systems. Low-cost quantum phase estimation techniques make use of circuits which only use a single ancilla qubit, requiring classical post-processing to extract eigenvalue details of the system. We investigate choices for phase estimation for a unitary matrix with low-depth noise-free or noisy circuits, varying both the phase estimation circuits themselves as well as the classical post-processing to determine the eigenvalue phases. W…
