Atomic (qubit) and optical or microwave (modal) phase-estimation protocols are placed on the same footing in terms of quantum-circuit diagrams. Circuit equivalences are used to demonstrate the equivalence of protocols that achieve the Heisenberg limit by employing entangled superpositions of Fock states, such as N00N states. The key equivalences are those that disentangle a circuit so that phase information is written exclusively on a mode or modes or on a qubit. The Fock-state-superposition phase-estimation circuits are converted to use entangled coherent-state superpositions; the resulting protocols are more amenable to realization in the lab, particularly in a qubit/cavity setting at microwave frequencies.
We study Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interferometry in a cQED architecture under effects of dissipation. To be specific, we consider a superconducting qubit driven by a dc+ac signal and coupled to a transmission line resonator, but our results are valid for general qubit-resonators devices. To take the environment into account, we assume that the resonator is coupled to an ohmic quantum bath. The Floquet-Born-Markov master equation is numerically solved to obtain the dynamics of the system for arbitrary amplitude of the drive and different time scales. We unveil important differences in the…
We analyse a recently reported neutron interference experiment to measure a geometric phase and attempt to bring out the inadequacy of the ``phase modulo 2π" approach to the geometric phase. A modified neutron interferometer experiment to observe 2nπphase changes of topological origin resulting from closed circuits around singularities in the parameter space of the experiment is proposed.
Since the anyonic excitations in the Kitaev toric model are perfectly localized quasiparticles, it is possible to generate dynamically the ground state and the excitations of the model Hamiltonian to simulate the anyonic interferometry. We propose a scheme in circuit QED to simulate the interferometry. The qubit-cavity interaction can be engineered to realize effective state control as well as the controlled dynamics of qubits, which are sufficient to prepare the ground states, create and remove the anyonic excitation, and simulate the anyonic interferometry. The simplicity and high fidelity o…
We discuss quantum variational optimization of Ramsey interferometry with ensembles of $N$ entangled atoms, and its application to atomic clocks based on a Bayesian approach to phase estimation. We identify best input states and generalized measurements within a variational approximation for the corresponding entangling and decoding quantum circuits. These circuits are built from basic quantum operations available for the particular sensor platform, such as one-axis twisting, or finite range interactions. Optimization is defined relative to a cost function, which in the present study is the Ba…
We perform a detailed analysis of how an amplified interferometer can be used to enhance the quality of a dispersive qubit measurement, such as one performed on a superconducting transmon qubit, using homodyne detection on an amplified microwave signal. Our modeling makes a realistic assessment of what is possible in current circuit-QED experiments; in particular, we take into account the frequency-dependence of the qubit-induced phase shift for short microwaves pulses. We compare the possible signal-to-noise ratios obtainable with (single-mode) SU(1,1) interferometers with the current coheren…

We propose a method to map the conventional optical interferometry setup into quantum circuits. The unknown phase shift inside a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the presence of photon loss is estimated by simulating the quantum circuits. For this aim, we use the Bayesian approach in which the likelihood functions are needed, and they are obtained by simulating the appropriate quantum circuits. The precision of four different definite photon-number states of light, which all possess six photons, is compared. In addition, the fisher information for the four definite photon-number states in the se…
Motivated by rapidly advancing capabilities for extensive nanoscale patterning of optical materials, I propose an approach to implementing photonic sequential logic that exploits circuit-scale phase coherence for efficient realizations of fundamental components such as a NAND-gate-with-fanout and a bistable latch. Kerr-nonlinear optical resonators are utilized in combination with interference effects to drive the binary logic. Quantum-optical input-output models are characterized numerically using design parameters that yield attojoule-scale energy separation between the latch states.
The problem of on-demand generation of entanglement between single-atom qubits via a common photonic channel is examined within the framework of optical interferometry. As expected, for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with coherent laser beam as input, a high-finesse optical cavity is required to overcome sensitivity to spontaneous emission. We show, however, that with a twin-Fock input, useful entanglement can in principle be created without cavity-enhancement. Both approaches require single-photon resolving detectors, and best results would be obtained by combining both cavity-feedback and twi…
We assess the most macroscopic matter-wave experiments to date as to the extent to which they probe the quantum-classical boundary by demonstrating interference of heavy molecules and cold atomic ensembles. To this end, we consider a rigorous Bayesian test protocol for a parametrized set of hypothetical modifications of quantum theory, including well-studied spontaneous collapse models, that destroy superpositions and reinstate macrorealism. The range of modification parameters ruled out by the measurement events quantifies the macroscopicity of a quantum experiment, while the shape of the pos…
In an atomic interferometer, the phase shift due to rotation is proportional to the area enclosed by the split components of the atom. However, this model is unclear for an atomic interferometer demonstrated recently by Shahriar et al., for which the atom simply passes through a single-zone optical beam, consisting of a pair of bichromatic counter-propagating beams. During the passage, the atomic wave packets in two distinct internal states couple to each other continuously. The two internal states trace out a complicated trajectory, guided by the optical beams, with the amplitude and spread o…
The identification of time-varying \textit{in situ} signals is crucial for characterizing the dynamics of quantum processes occurring in highly isolated environments. Under certain circumstances, they can be identified from time-resolved measurements via Ramsey interferometry experiments, but only with very special probe systems can the signals be explicitly read out, and a theoretical analysis is lacking on whether the measurement data are sufficient for unambiguous identification. In this paper, we formulate this problem as the invertibility of the underlying quantum input-output system, and…
Integrated photonics promises solutions to questions of stability, complexity, and size in quantum optics. Advances in tunable and non-planar integrated platforms, such laser-inscribed photonics, continue to bring the realisation of quantum advantages in computation and metrology ever closer, perhaps most easily seen in multi-path interferometry. Here we demonstrate control of two-photon interference in a chip-scale 3D multi-path interferometer, showing a reduced periodicity and enhanced visibility compared to single photon measurements. Observed non-classical visibilities are widely tunable, …

Proposals to measure non-Abelian anyons in a superconductor by quantum interference of vortices suffer from the predominantly classical dynamics of the normal core of an Abrikosov vortex. We show how to avoid this obstruction using coreless Josephson vortices, for which the quantum dynamics has been demonstrated experimentally. The interferometer is a flux qubit in a Josephson junction circuit, which can nondestructively read out a topological qubit stored in a pair of anyons --- even though the Josephson vortices themselves are not anyons. The flux qubit does not couple to intra-vortex excita…

We study a class of optical circuits with vacuum input states consisting of Gaussian sources without coherent displacements such as down-converters and squeezers, together with detectors and passive interferometry (beam-splitters, polarisation rotations, phase-shifters etc.). We show that the outgoing state leaving the optical circuit can be expressed in terms of so-called multi-dimensional Hermite polynomials and give their recursion and orthogonality relations. We show how quantum teleportation of photon polarisation can be modelled using this description.

The interaction of flux qubits with a low frequency tank circuit is studied. It is shown that changes in the state of the interacting qubits influence the effective impedance of the circuit, which is the essence of the so-called impedance measurement technique. The multiphoton resonant excitations in both single flux qubits and pairs of coupled flux qubits are investigated. In particular, we compare our theoretical results with recent spectroscopy measurements, Landau-Zener interferometry, and multiphoton fringes.
Recent experiments completed by collaborating research groups from Google, NASA Ames, UC Santa Barbara, and others provided compelling evidence that quantum supremacy has finally been achieved on a superconducting quantum processor. The theoretical basis for these experiments depends on sampling the output distributions of random quantum circuits; unfortunately, understanding how this theoretical basis can be used to define quantum supremacy is an extremely difficult task. Anyone attempting to understand how this sampling task relates to quantum supremacy must study concepts from random matrix…
We present a versatile, high-brightness, guided-wave source of polarization entangled photons, emitted at a telecom wavelength. Photon-pairs are generated using an integrated type-0 nonlinear waveguide, and subsequently prepared in a polarization entangled state via a stabilized fiber interferometer. We show that the single photon emission wavelength can be tuned over more than 50 nm, whereas the single photon spectral bandwidth can be chosen at will over more than five orders of magnitude (from 25 MHz to 4 THz). Moreover, by performing entanglement analysis, we demonstrate a high degree of co…
Atomtronics is an emerging field that aims to manipulate ultracold atom moving in matter wave circuits for both fundamental studies in quantum science and technological applications. In this colloquium, we review recent progress in matter-wave circuitry and atomtronics-based quantum technology. After a short introduction to the basic physical principles and the key experimental techniques needed to realize atomtronic systems, we describe the physics of matter-waves in simple circuits such as ring traps and two-terminal systems. The main experimental observations and outstanding questions are d…
The implementation of quantum technologies in electronics leads naturally to the concept of coherent single-electron circuits, in which a single charge is used coherently to provide enhanced performance. In this work, we propose a coherent single-electron device that operates as an electrically-tunable capacitor. This system exhibits a sinusoidal dependence of the capacitance with voltage, in which the amplitude of the capacitance changes and the voltage period can be tuned by electric means. The device concept is based on double-passage Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interferometry of a co…
Exciton-polaritons are hybrid elementary excitations of light and matter that, thanks to their nonlinear properties, enable a plethora of physical phenomena ranging from room temperature condensation to superfluidity. While polaritons are usually exploited in high density regime, evidence of quantum correlations at the level of few excitations has been recently reported, thus suggesting the possibility of using these systems for quantum information purposes. Here we show that integrated circuits of propagating single polaritons can be arranged to build deterministic quantum logic gates in whic…
A two-component fermion model with conventional two-body interactions was recently shown to have anyonic excitations. We here propose a scheme to physically implement this model by transforming each chain of two two-component fermions to the two capacitively coupled chains of superconducting devices. In particular, we elaborate how to achieve the wanted operations to create and manipulate the topological quantum states, providing an experimentally feasible scenario to access the topological memory and to build the anyonic interferometry.
Classically simulating quantum circuits is crucial when developing or testing quantum algorithms. Due to the underlying exponential complexity, efficient data structures are key for performing such simulations. To this end, tensor networks and decision diagrams have independently been developed with differing perspectives, terminologies, and backgrounds in mind. Although this left designers with two complementary data structures for quantum circuit simulation, thus far it remains unclear which one is the better choice for a given use case. In this work, we (1) consider how these techniques app…

We bring together a cavity-enhanced light-matter interface with a multimode interferometer (MMI) integrated onto a photonic chip and demonstrate the potential of such hybrid systems to tailor distributed entanglement in a quantum network. The MMI is operated with pairs of narrowband photons produced a priori deterministically from a single 87Rb atom strongly coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity. Non-classical coincidences between photon detection events show no loss of coherence when interfering pairs of these photons through the MMI in comparison to the two-photon visibility directly meas…
An integrated coherent matter wave circuit is a single device, analogous to an integrated optical circuit, in which coherent de Broglie waves are created and then launched into waveguides where they can be switched, divided, recombined, and detected as they propagate. Applications of such circuits include guided atom interferometers, atomtronic circuits, and precisely controlled delivery of atoms. Here we report experiments demonstrating integrated circuits for guided coherent matter waves. The circuit elements are created with the painted potential technique, a form of time-averaged optical d…

We investigate theoretically the ground-state property of a two-dimensional array of superconducting circuits including the on-site superconducting qubits (SQs) with weak anharmonicity. In particular, we analyse the influence of this anharmonicity on the Mott insulator to superfluid quantum phase transition. The complete ground-state phase diagrams are presented under the mean field approximation. Interestingly, the anharmonicity of SQs affects the Mott lobes enormously, and the single excitation Mott lobe disappears when the anharmonicity become zero. Our results can be used to guide the impl…
