Shannon entropies of one- and two-electron atomic structure factors in the position and momentum representations are used to examine the behavior of the off-diagonal elements of density matrices with respect to the uncertainty principle and to analyze the effects of electron correlation on off-diagonal order. We show that electron correlation induces off-diagonal order in position space which is characterized by larger entropic values. Electron correlation in momentum space is characterized by smaller entropic values as information is forced into regions closer to the diagonal. Related off-diagonal correlation functions are also discussed.
In this work we determine and discuss the entropic uncertainty measures of Shannon type for all the discrete stationary states of the multidimensional harmonic systems directly in terms of the states' hyperquantum numbers, the dimensionality and the oscillator strength. We have found that these entropies have a monotonically increasing behavior when both the dimensionality and the population of the states are increasing
Relations between Shannon entropy and Renyi entropies of integer order are discussed. For any N-point discrete probability distribution for which the Renyi entropies of order two and three are known, we provide an lower and an upper bound for the Shannon entropy. The average of both bounds provide an explicit extrapolation for this quantity. These results imply relations between the von Neumann entropy of a mixed quantum state, its linear entropy and traces.
In this work, the probability uncertainties related to a stationary quantum system with solitonic mass distribution when subjected to deformable hyperbolic potentials are studied. Shannon's entropy and Fisher's information of a position-dependent mass are calculated. To investigate the concept of Shannon and Fisher entropies of the solitonic mass distribution subject to the hyperbolic potential, it is necessary to obtain the analytic solutions at position and momentum space. For the Hamiltonian operator to be Hermitian, we consider the stationary Schrödinger equation ordered by Zhu-Kroemer. Th…
This paper is prepared as a contribution to the proceedings after the 12th ICSSUR/Feynfest Conference held in Foz do Iguacu (Brazil) from 2 to 6 May 2011. In the first part I briefy report the topic of entropic uncertainty relations for position and momentum variables. Then I investigate the discrete Shannon entropies related to the case of fnite number of detectors set to measure probability distributions in position and momentum spaces. I derive an uncertainty relation for the sum of the Shannon entropies which generalizes previous approaches [Phys. Lett. 103 A, 253 (1984)] based on an infni…
The entropic uncertainty measures of the multidimensional hydrogenic states quantify the multiple facets of the spatial delocalization of the electronic probability density of the system. The Shannon entropy is the most adequate uncertainty measure to quantify the electronic spreading and to mathematically formalize the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, partially because it does not depend on any specific point of their multidimensional domain of definition. In this work the radial and angular parts of the Shannon entropies for all the discrete stationary states of the multidimensional hydroge…
The Rényi entropies $R_{p}[ρ], 0<p<\infty$ of the probability density $ρ_{n,l,m}(\vec{r})$ of a physical system completely characterize the chemical and physical properties of the quantum state described by the three integer quantum numbers $(n,l,m)$. The analytical determination of these quantities is practically impossible up until now, even for the very few systems where their Schrödinger equation is exactly solved. In this work, the Rényi entropies of Rydberg (highly-excited) hydrogenic states are explicitly calculated in terms of the quantum numbers and the parameter $p$. To do that we us…
We have investigated the Shannon entropy around an exceptional point (EP) in an open elliptical microcavity as a non-Hermitian system. The Shannon entropy had an extreme value at the EP in the parameter space. The Shannon entropies showed discontinuity across a specific line in the parameter space, directly related to the occurrence of exchange of the Shannon entropy as well as the mode patterns with that line as a boundary. This feature results in a nontrivial topological structure of the Shannon entropy surfaces.
For noncomposite systems in classical and quantum domains, we obtain new inequalities such as the subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for Shannon entropies and information determined by the probability distributions and for von Neumann entropies of quantum states determined by the density operators. We extend the relations of Shannon and Tsallis entropies to the entropies of conditional probability distributions known for composite systems to the case of noncomposite systems. We give a review of the approach to construct the tomographic-probability distributions for qudit systems…
A general investigation is made into the intrinsic Riemannian geometry for complex systems, from the perspective of statistical mechanics. The entropic formulation of statistical mechanics is the ingredient which enables a connection between statistical mechanics and the corresponding Riemannian geometry. The form of the entropy used commonly is the Shannon entropy. However, for modelling complex systems, it is often useful to make use of entropies such as the Rényi and Tsallis entropies. We consider, here, Shannon, Rényi, Tsallis, Abe and structural entropies, for our analysis. We focus on on…
The notion of quantum discord introduced by Ollivier and Zurek [Phys. Rev. Lett 88, 017901 (2001)] (see also Henderson and Vedral [J. Phys. A 34, 6899 (2001)]) has attracted increasing attention, in recent years, as an entropic quantifier of non-classical features pertaining to the correlations exhibited by bipartite quantum systems. Here we generalize the notion so as to encompass power-law q-entropies (that reduce to the standard Shannon entropy in the limit $q \to 1$) and study the concomitant consequences. The ensuing, new discord-like measures we advance describe aspects of non-classicali…
Thermodynamic entropy, as defined by Clausius, characterizes macroscopic observations of a system based on phenomenological quantities such as temperature and heat. In contrast, information-theoretic entropy, introduced by Shannon, is a measure of uncertainty. In this Letter, we connect these two notions of entropy, using an axiomatic framework for thermodynamics [Lieb, Yngvason, Proc. Roy. Soc.(2013)]. In particular, we obtain a direct relation between the Clausius entropy and the Shannon entropy, or its generalisation to quantum systems, the von Neumann entropy. More generally, we find that …
We study the Shannon entropy of the probability distribution resulting from the ground-state wave function of a one-dimensional quantum model. This entropy is related to the entanglement entropy of a Rokhsar-Kivelson-type wave function built from the corresponding two-dimensional classical model. In both critical and massive cases, we observe that it is composed of an extensive part proportional to the length of the system and a subleading universal constant S_0. In c=1 critical systems (Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids), we find that S_0 is a simple function of the boson compactification radius. Th…
The Rényi and Shannon entropies are information-theoretic measures which have enabled to formulate the position-momentum uncertainty principle in a much more adequate and stringent way than the (variance-based) Heisenberg-like relation. Moreover, they are closely related to various energetic density-functionals of quantum systems. Here we find sharp upper bounds to these quantities in terms of the second order moment $\langle r^2\rangle$ for general spherically symmetric potentials, which substantially improve previous results of this type, by means of the Rényi maximization procedure with a c…
The nature of coarse graining is intuitively "obvious", but it is rather difficult to find explicit and calculable models of the coarse graining process (and the resulting entropy flow) discussed in the literature. What we would like to have at hand is some explicit and calculable process that takes an arbitrary system, with specified initial entropy S, and monotonically and controllably drives the entropy to its maximum value. This does not have to be a physical process, in fact for some purposes it is better to deal with a gedanken-process, since then it is more obvious how the "hidden infor…
In this study, the information-theoretic measures in both the position and momentum spaces for the pseudoharmonic potential using Fisher information, Shannon entropy, Renyi entropy, Tsallis entropy and Onicescu information energy are investigated analytically and numerically. The results obtained are applied to some diatomic molecules. The Renyi and Tsallis entropies are analytically obtained in position space using Srivastava-Niukkanen linearization formula in terms of the Lauricella hypergeometric function. Also they are obtained in the momentum space in terms of the multivariate Bell polyno…
Understanding cause-effect relationships is a crucial part of the scientific process. As Bell's theorem shows, within a given causal structure, classical and quantum physics impose different constraints on the correlations that are realisable, a fundamental feature that has technological applications. However, in general it is difficult to distinguish the set of classical and quantum correlations within a causal structure. Here we investigate a method to do this based on using entropy vectors for Tsallis entropies. We derive constraints on the Tsallis entropies that are implied by (conditional…
We make use of a Hylleraas-type wave function to derive an exact analytical model to quantify correlation in two-electron atomic/ionic systems and subsequently employ it to examine the role of inter-electronic repulsion in affecting (i) the bare (uncorrelated) single-particle position- and momentum-space charge distributions and (ii) corresponding Shannon's information entropies. The results presented for the first five members in the helium iso-electronic sequence, on the one hand, correctly demonstrate the effect of correlation on bare charge distributions and, on the other hand, lead us to …
Entropic uncertainty relations for the position and momentum within the generalized uncertainty principle are examined. Studies of this principle are motivated by the existence of a minimal observable length. Then the position and momentum operators satisfy the modified commutation relation, for which more than one algebraic representation is known. One of them is described by auxiliary momentum so that the momentum and coordinate wave functions are connected by the Fourier transform. However, the probability density functions of the physically true and auxiliary momenta are different. As the …
We analyzed the noncommutativity effects on the Fisher information (F_(r,p)) and Shannon entropies (S_(r,p)) of a harmonic oscillator immersed in a time-varying electric field in two and three dimensions. We find the exact solutions of the respective time-dependent Schrödinger equation and use them to calculate the Fisher information and the Shannon entropy for the simplest case corresponding the lowest-lying state of each system. While there is no problem in defining the Shannon entropy for noncommutating spaces, the definition of the Fisher information had to be modified to satisfy the Crame…
Using the entropic inequalities for Shannon and Tsallis entropies new inequalities for some classical polynomials are obtained. To this end, an invertible mapping for the irreducible unitary representation of groups $SU(2)$ and $SU(1,1)$ like Jacoby polynomials and Gauss' hypergeometric functions, respectively, are used.
The chain rule for the Shannon and von Neumann entropy, which relates the total entropy of a system to the entropies of its parts, is of central importance to information theory. Here we consider the chain rule for the more general smooth min- and max-entropy, used in one-shot information theory. For these entropy measures, the chain rule no longer holds as an equality, but manifests itself as a set of inequalities that reduce to the chain rule for the von Neumann entropy in the i.i.d. case.
Entropies based on walks on graphs and on their line-graphs are defined. They are based on the summation over diagonal and off-diagonal elements of the thermal Green's function of a graph also known as the communicability. The walk entropies are strongly related to the walk regularity of graphs and line-graphs. They are not biased by the graph size and have significantly better correlation with the inverse participation ratio of the eigenmodes of the adjacency matrix than other graph entropies. The temperature dependence of the walk entropies is also discussed. In particular, the walk entropy …
This work presents a generalization of the Koashi-Winter relation for $α$-Renyi entropies. This result is based on the Renyi\apos s entropy version of quantum Jensen Shannon divergence. By means of this definition, a classical correlations quantifier $C_α(ρ_{AB}) = \sup_{ξ_{AB}^{M_B}} Q_α(ξ_{AB}^{M_B})$ is proposed, where the optimization is taken over the ensembles $ξ_{AB}^{M_B}$ created by the outputs of the local measurement process. The main result is applied to the capacity of a quantum classical channel over a tripartite pure state $ψ_{ABE}$, that is rated above in function of the probab…
A comparative study of one-dimensional quantum structures which allow analytic expressions for the position and momentum Rényi $R(α)$ and Tsallis $T(α)$ entropies, focuses on extracting the most characteristic physical features of these one-parameter functionals. Consideration of the harmonic oscillator reconfirms a special status of the Gaussian distribution: at any parameter $α$ it converts into the equality both Rényi and Tsallis uncertainty relations removing for the latter an additional requirement $1/2\leqα\leq1$ that is a necessary condition for all other geometries. It is shown that th…

Shannon quantum information entropies $S_{ρ,γ}$, Fisher informations $I_{ρ,γ}$, Onicescu energies $O_{ρ,γ}$ and Rényi entropies $R_{ρ,γ}(α)$ are calculated both in the position (subscript $ρ$) and momentum ($γ$) spaces as functions of the inner radius $r_0$ for the two-dimensional Dirichlet unit-width annulus threaded by the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux $ϕ_{AB}$. Discussion is based on the analysis of the corresponding position and momentum waveforms. Position Shannon entropy (Onicescu energy) grows logarithmically (decreases as $1/r_0$) with large $r_0$ tending to the same asymptote $S_ρ^{asym}=\l…
