The properties of the s-wave for a quasi-free particle with position-dependent mass(PDM) have been discussed in details. Differed from the system with constant mass in which the localization of the s-wave for the free quantum particle around the origin only occurs in two dimensions, the quasi-free particle with PDM can experience attractive forces in $D$ dimensions except D=1 when its mass function satisfies some conditions. The effective mass of a particle varying with its position can induce effective interaction which may be attractive in some cases. The analytical expressions of the eigenfunctions and the corresponding probability densities for the s-waves of the two- and three-dimensional systems with a special PDM are given, and the existences of localization around the origin for these systems are shown.
This paper presents the uncertainty related to position and momentum localization of a quantum state in terms of entropic uncertainty relations. We slightly improve the inequality given in [Phys. Rev. A 74, 052101 (2006)] and introduce a new entropic measure with corresponding uncertainty relation.
We revisit the back-action of emitted photons on the motion of the relative position of two cold atoms. We show that photon recoil resulting from the spontaneous emission can induce the localization of the relative position of the two atoms through the entanglement between the spatial motion of individual atoms and their emitted photons. The result provides a more realistic model for the analysis of the environment-induced localization of a macroscopic object.
We study the localization of probability distribution in a discrete quantum random walk on an infinite chain. With a phase defect introduced in any position of the quantum random walk (QRW), we have found that the localization of the probability distribution in the QRW emerges. Different localized behaviors of the probability distribution in the QRW are presented when the defect occupies different positions. Given that the coefficients of the localized stationary eigenstates relies on the coin operator, we reveal that when the defect occupies different positions, the amplitude of localized pro…
We study localization of atomic position when a three-level atom interacts with a quantized standing-wave field in the Ramsey interferometer setup. Both the field quadrature amplitude and the atomic internal state are measured to obtain the atomic position information. It is found that this dual measurement scheme produces an interference pattern superimposed on a diffraction-like pattern in the atomic position distribution, where the former pattern originates from the state-selective measurement and the latter from the field measurement. The present scheme results in a better resolution in th…
We describe how quasiclassical relative positions of particles emerge in an initially delocalized quantum system as scattering of a probe beam is observed. We show that in the multiparticle case this localization in position space occurs via intermediate states that are quantum superpositions of spatial configurations. These superpositions are robust to consecutive scattering events, and scattering alone does not lead to their decoherence. Instead the free evolution of the system combines with scattering to destroy these superpositions, leading the particles to adopt classical-like positions r…
We propose an approach to position measurements based on the hypothesis that the action of a position detector on a quantum system can be effectively described by a dissipative disordered potential. We show that such kind of potential is able, via the dissipation-induced Anderson localization, to contemporary localize the wavefunction of the system and to dissipate information to modes bounded to the detector. By imposing a diabaticity condition we demonstrate that the dissipative dynamics between the modes of the system leads to a localized energy exchange between the detector and the rest of…
We numerically study the single particle localization and delocalization phenomena of an initially localized wave packet in the kicked Harper model (KHM) and Harper model subjected to quasi-periodic perturbation composed of $M-$modes. Both models are localized in the monochromatically perturbed case $M=1$. KHM shows localization-delocalization transition (LDT) above $M\geq2$ as increase of the perturbation strength $\eps$. In contrast, in a time-continuous Harper model with the perturbation, it is confirmed that the localization persists for $M=2$ and the LDT occurs for $M\geq 3$. Furthermore,…
We analyze the dynamics of a quantum kicked rotor (QKR) driven with a binary Fibonacci sequence of two distinct drive amplitudes. While the dynamics at low drive frequencies is found to be diffusive, a long-lived pre-ergodic regime emerges in the other limit. Further, the dynamics in this pre-ergodic regime can be associated with the onset of a dynamical quasi-localization, similar to the dynamical localization observed in a regular QKR. We establish that this peculiar behavior arises due to the presence of localized eigenstates of an approximately conserved effective Hamiltonian, which drives…
We study the many-body localization (MBL) properties of a chain of interacting fermions subject to a quasiperiodic potential such that the non-interacting chain is always delocalized and displays multifractality. Contrary to naive expectations, adding interactions in this systems does not enhance delocalization, and a MBL transition is observed. Due to the local properties of the quasiperiodic potential, the MBL phase presents specific features, such as additional peaks in the density distribution. We furthermore investigate the fate of multifractality in the ergodic phase for low potential va…
It is typically assumed that disorder is essential to realize Anderson localization. Recently, a number of proposals have suggested that an interacting, translation invariant system can also exhibit localization. We examine these claims in the context of a one-dimensional spin ladder. At intermediate time scales, we find slow growth of entanglement entropy consistent with the phenomenology of many-body localization. However, at longer times, all finite wavelength spin polarizations decay in a finite time, independent of system size. We identify a single length scale which parametrically contro…
We report on a direct connection between quasi-periodic topology and the Almost Mathieu (Andre-Aubry) metal insulator transition (MIT). By constructing quasi-periodic transfer matrix equations from the limit of rational approximate projected Green's functions, we relate results from $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ co-cycle theory (transfer matrix eigenvalue scaling) to consequences of rational band theory. This reduction links the eigenfunction localization of the MIT to the chiral edge modes of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian, implying the localized phase roots in a topological "bulk-bulk" correspondenc…
We experimentally observe many-body localization of interacting fermions in a one-dimensional quasi-random optical lattice. We identify the many-body localization transition through the relaxation dynamics of an initially-prepared charge density wave. For sufficiently weak disorder the time evolution appears ergodic and thermalizing, erasing all remnants of the initial order. In contrast, above a critical disorder strength a significant portion of the initial ordering persists, thereby serving as an effective order parameter for localization. The stationary density wave order and the critical …
Integrable models form pillars of theoretical physics because they allow for full analytical understanding. Despite being rare, many realistic systems can be described by models that are close to integrable. Therefore, an important question is how small perturbations influence the behavior of solvable models. This is particularly true for many-body interacting quantum systems where no general theorems about their stability are known. Here, we show that no such theorem can exist by providing an explicit example of a one-dimensional many-body system in a quasiperiodic potential whose transport p…
Disordered systems provide paradigmatic instances of ergodicity breaking and localization phenomena. Here we explore the dynamics of excitations in a system of Rydberg atoms held in optical tweezers. The finite temperature produces an intrinsic uncertainty in the atomic positions, which translates into quenched correlated disorder in the interatomic interaction strengths. In a simple approach, the dynamics in the many-body Hilbert space can be understood in terms of a one-dimensional Anderson-like model with disorder on every other site, featuring both localized and delocalized states. We cond…
