We provide an elementary proof of the quantum adiabatic theorem.
According to Wigner theorem, transformations of quantum states which preserve the probabilities are either unitary or antiunitary. This short communication presents an elementary proof of this theorem that significantly departs from the numerous ones already existing in the literature. The main line of the argument remains valid even in quantum field theory where Hilbert spaces are non-separable.
The field of device-independent quantum cryptography has seen enormous success in the past several years, including security proofs for key distribution and random number generation that account for arbitrary imperfections in the devices used. Full security proofs in the field so far are long and technically deep. In this paper we show that the concept of the mirror adversary can be used to simplify device-independent proofs. We give a short proof that any bipartite Bell violation can be used to generate private random numbers. The proof is based on elementary techniques and is self-contained.
A short and elementary proof of the joint convexity of relative entropy is presented, using nothing beyond linear algebra. The key ingredients are an easily verified integral representation and the strategy used to prove the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality in elementary courses. Several consequences are proved in a way which allow an elementary proof of strong subadditivity in a few more lines. Some expository material on Schwarz inequalities for operators and the Holevo bound for partial measurements is also included.
We provide alternative proofs of two recent Grothendieck theorems for jointly completely bounded bilinear forms, originally due to Pisier and Shlyakhtenko (Invent. Math. 2002) and Haagerup and Musat (Invent. Math. 2008). Our proofs are elementary and are inspired by the so-called embezzlement states in quantum information theory. Moreover, our proofs lead to quantitative estimates.
We provide an elementary proof for a theorem due to Petz and Réffy which states that for a random $n\times n$ unitary matrix with distribution given by the Haar measure on the unitary group U(n), the upper left (or any other) $k\times k$ submatrix converges in distribution, after multiplying by a normalization factor $\sqrt{n}$ and as $n\to\infty$, to a matrix of independent complex Gaussian random variables with mean 0 and variance 1.
We give elementary proofs of two theorems concerning bounds on the maximum argument of the eigenvalues of a product of two unitary matrices --- one by Childs \emph{et al.} [J. Mod. Phys., \textbf{47}, 155 (2000)] and the other one by Chau [arXiv:1006.3614]. Our proofs have the advantages that the necessary and sufficient conditions for equalities are apparent and that they can be readily generalized to the case of infinite-dimensional unitary operators.
