We show that field-free molecular orientation induced by a half-cycle pulse may be considerably enhanced by an additional laser pulse inducing molecular anti-alignment. Two qualitatively different enhancement mechanisms are identified depending on the pulse order, and their effects are optimized with the help of quasi-classical as well as fully quantum models.
We investigate experimentally and numerically the field-free orientation of the symmetric top molecule of methyl-iodide at high temperature using a terahertz radiation generated by a plasma induced by a two-color laser beam. The degree of orientation is measured from the free-induction decay emitted by the sample. The observed experimental signal is reproduced with a good accuracy by numerical simulations.
We have experimentally and theoretically investigated the mixed-field orientation of rotational-state-selected OCS molecules and we achieve strong degrees of alignment and orientation. The applied moderately intense nanosecond laser pulses are long enough to adiabatically align molecules. However, in combination with a weak dc electric field, the same laser pulses result in nonadiabatic dynamics in the mixed-field orientation. These observations are fully explained by calculations employing, both, adiabatic and non-adiabatic time-dependent models.
This study shows the unexpected and counter-intuitive possibility of simultaneously orienting a molecule while delocalizing its molecular axis in a plane in field-free conditions. The corresponding quantum states are characterized and different control strategies using shaped THz laser pulses are proposed to reach such states at zero and nonzero temperatures. The robustness against temperature effects of a simple control procedure combining a laser and a THz pulse is shown. Such control strategies can be applied not only to linear molecules but also to symmetric top molecules.
We explore the electronic structure and rovibrational properties of an ultralong-range triatomic Rydberg molecule formed by a Rydberg atom and a ground state heteronuclear diatomic molecule. We focus here on interaction of Rb($27s$) Rydberg atom with KRb($N=0$) diatomic polar molecule. There's significant electronic hybridization of Rb($n=24$, $l\ge 3$) degenerate manifold. The polar diatomic molecule is allowed to rotate in the electric fields generated by the Rydberg electron and core as well as an external field. We investigate the metamorphosis of the Born-Oppenheimer potential curves, ess…
We investigate to which extend a THz laser pulse can be used to produce field-free molecular orientation at high temperature. We consider laser pulses that can be implemented with the state of the art technology and we show that the efficiency of the control scheme crucially depends on the parameters of the molecule. We analyze the temperature effects on molecular dynamics and we demonstrate that, for some molecules, a noticeable orientation can be achieved at high temperature.
We theoretically consider the phenomenon of field-free long-lasting orientation of symmetric-top molecules ionized by two-color laser pulses. The anisotropic ionization produces a significant long-lasting orientation of the surviving neutral molecules. The degree of orientation increases with both the pulse intensity and, counterintuitively, with the rotational temperature. The orientation may be enhanced even further by using multiple delayed two-color pulses. The long-lasting orientation may be probed by even harmonic generation or by Coulomb-explosion-based methods. The effect may enable th…
We present a theoretical study of the mixed-field orientation of molecules without rotational symmetry. The time-dependent one-dimensional and three-dimensional orientation of a thermal ensemble of 6-chloropyridazine-3-carbonitrile molecules in combined linearly or elliptically polarized laser fields and tilted dc electric fields is computed. The results are in good agreement with recent experimental results of one-dimensional orientation for weak dc electric fields [J. Chem. Phys. 139, 234313 (2013)]. Moreover, they predict that using elliptically polarized laser fields or strong dc fields th…
We present a theoretical study of the impact of an electrostatic field combined with nonresonant linearly polarized laser pulses on the rotational dynamics of a thermal ensemble of linear molecules. We solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation within the rigid rotor approximation for several rotational states. Using the carbonyl sulfide (OCS) molecule as a prototype, the mixed-field orientation of a thermal sample is analyzed in detail for experimentally accessible static field strengths and laser pulses. We demonstrate that for the characteristic field configuration used in current mixed-…
We present a comprehensive study of enantioselective orientation of chiral molecules excited by a pair of delayed cross-polarized femtosecond laser pulses. We show that by optimizing the pulses' parameters, a significant (~ 10%) degree of enantioselective orientation can be achieved at zero and at five kelvin rotational temperatures. This study suggests a set of reasonable experimental conditions for inducing and measuring strong enantioselective orientation. The strong enantioselective orientation and the wide availability of the femtosecond laser systems required for the proposed experiments…
Impulsive orientation of symmetric-top molecules excited by two-color femtosecond pulses is considered. In addition to the well-known transient orientation appearing immediately after the pulse and then reemerging periodically due to quantum revivals, we report the phenomenon of field-free long-lasting orientation. Long-lasting means that the time averaged orientation remains non-zero until destroyed by other physical effects, e.g. intermolecular collisions. The effect is caused by the combined action of the field-polarizability and field-hyperpolarizability interactions. The dependence of deg…
We study the excitation of asymmetric-top (including chiral) molecules by two-color femtosecond laser pulses. In the cases of non-chiral asymmetric-top molecules excited by an orthogonally polarized two-color pulse, we demonstrate, classically and quantum mechanically, three-dimensional orientation. For chiral molecules, we show that the orientation induced by a cross-polarized two-color pulse is enantioselective along the laser propagation direction, namely, the two enantiomers are oriented in opposite directions. On the short time scale, the classical and quantum simulations give results tha…
We investigate the structure and features of an ultralong-range triatomic Rydberg molecule formed by a Rb Rydberg atom and a KRb diatomic molecule. In our numerical description, we perform a realistic treatment of the internal rotational motion of the diatomic molecule, and take into account the Rb($n, l\ge 3$) Rydberg degenerate manifold and the energetically closest neighboring levels with principal quantum numbers $n'>n$ and orbital quantum number $l\le2$. We focus here on the adiabatic electronic potentials evolving from the Rb($n, l\ge 3$) and Rb($n=26, l=2$) manifolds. The directional pr…
The question of classicality is addressed in relation with the shape of the nuclear skeleton of molecular systems. As the most natural environment, the electrons of the molecule are considered as continuously monitoring agents for the nuclei. For this picture, an elementary formalism of decoherence theory is developed and numerical results are presented for few-particle systems. The numerical examples suggest that the electron-nucleus Coulomb interaction is sufficient for inducing a blurred shape with strong quantum coherences in compounds of the lightest elements, H$_2$, D$_2$, T$_2$, and HeH…
Control of molecular rotations by laser fields is an active area of research focusing on the alignment/orientation of otherwise isotropic molecular samples. Oriented molecules are useful in many applications, such as molecular orbital tomography, femtosecond imaging of molecular structure, dynamics and chemical reaction control. In this work, we present a novel, previously unreported phenomenon appearing in thermal ensembles of non-linear polar molecules excited by a single THz pulse. We find that the induced orientation lasts long after the excitation pulse is over. In the case of symmetric-t…
We present a theoretical study of the mixed-field-orientation of asymmetric top molecules in tilted static electric field and non-resonant linearly polarized laser pulse by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Within this framework, we compute the mixed-field orientation of a state selected molecular beam of benzonitrile (C$_7$H$_5$N) and compare with the experimental observations [J. L. Hansen et al., Phys. Rev. A 83, 023406 (2011)], and with our previous time-independent descriptions [J. J. Omiste et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 13, 18815 (2011)]. For an excited rotational state,…
We present a combined analytical and numerical investigation to show how an optimal control field can be designed to generate maximum field-free orientation of molecules for three populated rotational states. Based on a model involving pure rotational ladder-climbing excitation between rotational states, a set of optimal amplitude and phase conditions are analytically derived for the applied control fields. The maximum degree of orientation can be achieved when the field satisfies amplitude and phase conditions at the two transition frequencies. Multiple optimal solutions exist and to examine …
Precisely measuring the three-dimensional position and orientation of individual fluorophores is challenging due to the substantial photon shot noise in single-molecule experiments. Facing this limited photon budget, numerous techniques have been developed to encode 2D and 3D position and 2D and 3D orientation information into fluorescence images. In this work, we adapt classical and quantum estimation theory and propose a mathematical framework to derive the best possible precision for measuring the position and orientation of dipole-like emitters for any fixed imaging system. We find that it…
The single and multiple electron loss of fast highly charged projectiles in the collisions with neutral molecules are studied within the framework of a nonperturbative approach. The cross sections for single, double, and triple electron losses are calculated for the collision system $Fe^{q+}\to N_2$ ($q$=24, 25, 26) at the collision energies 10, 100, and 1000 MeV/u. The effects caused by the collision multiplicity and the orientation of the axis of target molecule are treated. It is shown that collision multiplicity effect leads to considerable differences for the cases of perpendicular and pa…
We demonstrate strong laser-field-free orientation of absolute-ground-state carbonyl sulfide molecules. The molecules are oriented by the combination of a 485-ps-long non-resonant laser pulse and a weak static electric field. The edges of the laser pulse create a coherent superposition of two rotational states resulting in revivals of strong transient molecular orientation after the laser pulse. The experimentally attained degree of orientation of 0.6 corresponds to the theoretical maximum for mixing of the two states. Switching off the dc field would provide the same orientation completely fi…
We have studied the motion of antihydrogen atoms in electric and magnetic fields of arbitrary orientation. Our aim was to find an exact model of external (centre-of-charge) and internal dynamics which would allow us to describe antihydrogen motion in a realistic way. After analysing the kinematics of the charge exchange reaction producing antihydrogen and of antihydrogen deexcitation, we discuss the dynamics in cases of special fields configurations. Finally, we propose an expression for the force acting on an antihydrogen atom when the field configuration is arbitrary. The general formula -- …
We develop two novel models of the H$_2^+$ molecule and its isotopes from which we assess quantum-mechanically and semi-classically whether the molecule anti-aligns with the field in the first excited electronic state. The results from both models allow us to predict anti-alignment dynamics even for the HD$^+$ isotope, which possesses a permanent dipole moment. The molecule dissociates at angles perpendicular to the field polarization in both the excited and the ground electronic state, as the population is exchanged through a conical intersection. The quantum mechanical dispersion of the init…
Ultrashort laser pulses are widely used for transient field-free molecular orientation -- a phenomenon important in chemical reaction dynamics, ultrafast molecular imaging, high harmonics generation, and attosecond science. However, significant molecular orientation usually requires rotationally cold molecules, like in rarified molecular beams, because chaotic thermal motion is detrimental to the orientation process. Here we propose to use the mechanism of the echo phenomenon previously observed in hadron accelerators, free-electron lasers, and laser-excited molecules to overcome the destructi…
Intense terahertz-frequency pulses induce coherent rotational dynamics and orientation of polar molecular ensembles. Exact numerical methods for rotational dynamics are computationally not feasible for the vast majority of molecular rotors - the asymmetric top molecules at ambient temperatures. We exemplify the use of Random Phase Wave Functions (RPWF) by calculating the terahertz-induced rotational dynamics of sulfur dioxide (SO2) at ambient temperatures and high field strengths and show that the RPWF method gains efficiency with the increase in temperature and in the THz-field strengths. The…
A theoretical study of the rotational dynamics of a linear polar molecule in a two-color non-resonant cw laser field is presented. By systematically considering the interactions of this field with the electric dipole moment, polarizability and hyperpolarizability of the molecule, the effect of the symmetries of the Hamiltonian on the orientation and alignment is explored in a regime where the time-average approximation does not hold. It is shown that the alignment and orientation satisfy certain symmetries as a function of the phases and field strengths. On average a one-color cw laser field d…
In the field of molecular electronics, particularly in quantum transport studies, the orientation of molecules plays a crucial role. This orientation, with respect to the electrodes, can be defined through the cavity of ring-shaped monocyclic hydrocarbon molecules. In this manuscript, we unveil the geometrical conformation of these molecules when they are trapped between two atomically sharp electrodes through a combination of dynamic simulations, electronic transport calculations based on density functional theory, and break junction experiments under room conditions. Moreover, we present a n…
We develop a time-dependent theory to investigate electron dynamics and photoionization processes of diatomic molecules interacting with strong laser fields including electron-electron correlation effects. We combine the recently formulated time-dependent generalized-active-space configuration interaction theory [D. Hochstuhl and M. Bonitz, Phys. Rev. A 86, 053424 (2012); S. Bauch, et al., Phys. Rev. A 90, 062508 (2014)] with a prolate spheroidal basis set including localized orbitals and continuum states to describe the bound electrons and the outgoing photoelectron. As an example, we study t…
