Large families of Hamiltonians that are non-Hermitian in the conventional sense have been found to have all eigenvalues real, a fact attributed to an unbroken PT symmetry. The corresponding quantum theories possess an unconventional scalar product. The eigenvalues are determined by differential equations with boundary conditions imposed in wedges in the complex plane. For a special class of such systems, it is possible to impose the PT-symmetric boundary conditions on the real axis, which lies on the edges of the wedges. The PT-symmetric spectrum can then be obtained by imposing the more transparent requirement that the potential be reflectionless.
A condition, at which the one-dimensional inverse power potential becomes reflectionless during propagation through it of a plane wave, is obtained on the basis of SUSY QM methods. A scattering of a particle on spherically symmetric inverse power potential is analysed with taking into account of the reflectionless possibility.
A class of one-dimensional reflectionless potentials, an absolute transparency of which is concerned with their belonging to one SUSY-hierarchy with a constant potential, is studied. An approach for determination of a general form of the reflectionless potential on the basis of construction of such a hierarchy by the recurrent method is proposed. A general form of interdependence between superpotentials with neighboring numbers of this hierarchy, opening a possibility to find new reflectionless potentials, have a simple analytical view and are expressed through finite number of elementary func…
Green's functions for reflectionless potentials are constructed and analyzed. Green's functions for power law potentials, their Super Symmetric partners and sum rules for eigenvalues are examined. The SUSY partner potentials to power law potentials which have an additional bound state at $E=0$ are constructed.
A fully algebraic approach to reconstructing one-dimensional reflectionless potentials is described. A simple and easily applicable general formula is derived, using the methods of the theory of determinants. In particular, useful properties of special determinants - the alternants - have been exploited. The main formula takes an especially simple form if one aims to reconstruct a symmetric reflectionless potential. Several examples are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the method.
We studied two possible approaches to one-dimensional Levinson's theorem for Schödinger equation. The first one, we restrict the 3-dimensional theorem. The other one, the theorem proposed by Dong, Ma and Klauss \cite{Dong}. We find failures in each approach for a one-dimensional reflectionless potential. In order to see this, we explicitly evaluate the phase shift using Schrödinger equation using solution procedure proposed by Jaffe \cite{Jaffe}.
A nonreflecting wavepacket is constructed by the superposition of reflectionless eigenstates of sech2 potential. Free propagation and propagation in the presence of the above potential of such a wavepacket is considered using the concept of arrival time. Comparison is made with the free evolving Gaussian wavepacket. Mean arrival time at a detector behind the well is given as a function of mass for separate cases. A selection of Bohmian trajectories in the interacting case are computed and compared to the trajectories of a free particle guided by a Gaussian packet.
Non-zero curvature in a waveguide leads to the appearance of an attractive quantum potential which crucially affects the dynamics in matter-wave circuits. Using methods of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, pairs of bent waveguides are found whose geometry-induced potentials share the same scattering properties. As a result, reflectionless waveguides, dual to the straight waveguide, are identified. Strictly isospectral waveguides are also found by modulating the depth of the trapping potential. Numerical simulations are used to demonstrate the efficiency of these approaches in tailoring and con…
As a part of the program `discrete quantum mechanics,' we present general reflectionless potentials for difference Schrödinger equations with pure imaginary shifts. By combining contiguous integer wave number reflectionless potentials, we construct the discrete analogues of the $h(h+1)/\cosh^2x$ potential with the integer $h$, which belong to the recently constructed families of solvable dynamics having the $q$-ultraspherical polynomials with $|q|=1$ as the main part of the eigenfunctions. For the general ($h\in\mathbb{R}_{>0}$) scattering theory for these potentials, we need the connection fo…
Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics may be used to construct reflectionless potentials and phase-equivalent potentials. The exactly solvable case of the $λsech^2$ potential is used to show that for certain values of the strength $λ$ the phase-equivalent singular potential arising from the elimination of all the boundstates is identical to the original potential evaluated at a point shifted in the complex cordinate space. This equivalence has the consequence that certain general relations valid for reflectionless potentials and phase-equivalent potentials lead to hitherto unknown identities satisf…
We investigate the reflectionlessness and invisibility properties in the transverse electric (TE) mode solution of a linear homogeneous optical system which comprises the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric structures covered by graphene sheets. We derive analytic expressions, indicate roles of each parameter governing optical system with graphene and justify that optimal conditions of these parameters give rise to broadband and wide angle invisibility. Presence of graphene turns out to shift the invisible wavelength range and to reduce the required gain amount considerably, based on its chemical potenti…
Bragg scattering in sinusoidal PT-symmetric complex crystals of finite thickness is theoretically investigated by the derivation of exact analytical expressions for reflection and transmission coefficients in terms of modified Bessel functions of first kind. The analytical results indicate that unidirectional invisibility, recently predicted for such crystals by coupled-mode theory [Z. Lin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 213901 (2011)], breaks down for crystals containing a large number of unit cells. In particular, for a given modulation depth in a shallow sinusoidal potential, three regimes ar…
The family of complex PT-symmetric sextic potentials is studied to show that for various cases the system is essentially quasi-solvable and possesses real, discrete energy eigenvalues. For a particular choice of parameters, we find that under supersymmetric transformations the underlying potential picks up a reflectionless part.
We study a reflectionless PT-symmetric quantum system described by the pair of complexified Scarf II potentials mutually displaced in the half of their pure imaginary period. Analyzing the rich set of intertwining discrete symmetries of the pair, we find an exotic supersymmetric structure based on three matrix differential operators that encode all the properties of the system, including its reflectionless (finite-gap) nature. The structure we revealed particularly sheds new light on the splitting of the discrete states into two families, related to the bound and resonance states in Hermitian …
Parity-time (PT) symmetry is of great interest. The reciprocal and unidirectional features are intriguing besides the PT symmetry phase transition. Recently, the reciprocal transmission, unidirectional reflectionless and invisibility are intensively studied. Here, we show the reciprocal reflection/transmission in PT -symmetric system is closely related to the type of PT symmetry, that is, the axial (reflection) PT symmetry leads to reciprocal reflection (transmission). The results are further elucidated by studying the scattering of rhombic ring form coupled resonators with enclosed synthetic …
We consider wave dynamics for a Schrödinger equation with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}$ satisfying the generalized (anyonic) parity-time symmetry $\mathcal{PT H}= \exp(2 i φ) \mathcal{HPT}$, where $\mathcal{P}$ and $ \mathcal{T}$ are the parity and time-reversal operators. For a stationary potential, the anyonic phase $φ$ just rotates the energy spectrum of $\mathcal{H}$ in complex plane, however for a drifting potential the energy spectrum is deformed and the scattering and localization properties of the potential show intriguing behaviors arising from the breakdown of the Galilea…
A general formalism is worked out for the description of one-dimensional scattering in non-hermitian quantum mechanics and constraints on transmission and reflection coefficients are derived in the cases of P, T, or PT invariance of the Hamiltonian. Applications to some solvable PT-symmetric potentials are shown in detail. Our main original results concern the association of reflectionless potentials with asymptotic exact PT symmetry and the peculiarities of separable kernels of non-local potentials in connection with hermiticity, T invariance and PT invariance.
For a general complex scattering potential defined on a real line, we show that the equations governing invisibility of the potential are invariant under the combined action of parity and time-reversal (PT) transformation. We determine the PT-symmetric an well as non-PT-symmetric invisible configurations of an easily realizable exactly solvable model that consists of a two-layer planar slab consisting of optically active material. Our analysis shows that although PT-symmetry is neither necessary nor sufficient for the invisibility of a scattering potential, it plays an important role in the ch…
The spectrum of complex PT-symmetric potential, $V(x)=igx$, is known to be null. We enclose this potential in a hard-box: $V(|x| \ge 1) =\infty $ and in a soft-box: $V(|x|\ge 1)=0$. In the former case, we find real discrete spectrum and the exceptional points of the potential. The asymptotic eigenvalues behave as $E_n \sim n^2.$ The solvable purely imaginary PT-symmetric potentials vanishing asymptotically known so far do not have real discrete spectrum. Our solvable soft-box potential possesses two real negative discrete eigenvalues if $|g|<(1.22330447)$. The soft-box potential turns out to b…
The approximate analytical solutions of the Dirac equations with the reflectionless-type and Rosen-Morse potentials including the spin-orbit centrifugal (pseudo-centrifugal) term are obtained. Under the conditions of spin and pseudospin (pspin) symmetry concept, we obtain the bound state energy spectra and the corresponding two-component upper- and lower-spinors of the two Dirac particles by means of the Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method in closed form. The special cases of the s-wave κ=\pm1 (l=l=0) Dirac equation and the non-relativistic limit of Dirac equation are briefly studied.
We express the boundary conditions for TE and TM waves at the interfaces of an infinite planar slab of homogeneous metamaterial as certain point interactions and use them to compute the transfer matrix of the system. This allows us to demonstrate the omnidirectional reflectionlessness of Veselago's slab for waves of arbitrary wavelength, reveal the translational and reflection symmetry of this slab, explore the laser threshold condition and coherent perfect absorption for active negative-index metamaterials, introduce a point interaction modeling phase-conjugation, determine the corresponding …
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is confined in a very tight toroidal/annular trap, in the presence of a potential, which breaks the axial symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We investigate the stationary states of the condensate, when its density distribution co-rotates with the symmetry-breaking potential. As the strength of the potential increases, we have a gradual transition from vortex excitation to solid-body-like motion. Of particular importance are states where the system is static and yet it has a nonzero current/circulation, which is a realization of persistent currents/reflec…
The connection of the 'time' evolution of the eigenstates of the reflectionless potentials of the Lax hierarchy to the more general case of the 'time' evolution of the eigenstates of the Schroedinger equation for potentials with non-vanishing reflection coefficients is explored. A new hierarchy of functions satisfying 'time' dependent equations is established.
A technique to reconstruct one-dimensional, reflectionless potentials and the associated quantum wave functions starting from a finite number of known energy spectra is discussed. The method is demonstrated using spectra that scale like the lowest energy states of standard problems encountered in the undergraduate curriculum such as: the infinite square well, the simple harmonic oscillator, and the one-dimensional hydrogen atom.
We complexify a 1-d potential which exhibits bound, reflecting and free states to study various properties of a non-Hermitian system. This potential turns out a PT-symmetric non-Hermitian potential when one of the parameters becomes imaginary. For one PT-symmetric case we have entire real bound state spectrum. Explicit scattering states are constructed to show reciprocity at certain discrete values of energy even though the potential is not parity symmetric. Coexistence of deep energy minima of transmissivity with the multiple spectral singularities (MSS) is observed. We further show that this…
We point out that PT-symmetric potentials $V_{PT}(x)$ having imaginary asymptotic saturation: $V_{PT}(x=\pm \infty) =\pm i V_1, V_1 \in \Re$ are devoid of scattering states and spectral singularity. We show the existence of real (positive and negative) discrete spectrum both with and without complex conjugate pair(s) of eigenvalues (CCPEs). If the states are arranged in the ascending order or real part of discrete eigenvalues, the initial states have few nodes but latter ones oscillate fast. Both real and imaginary parts of $ψ(x)$ vanish asymptotically, $|ψ(x)|$ for the CCPEs are asymmetric an…
The versatile and exactly solvable Scarf II has been predicting, confirming and demonstrating interesting phenomena in complex PT-symmetric sector, most impressively. However, for the non-PT-symmetric sector it has gone underutilized. Here, we present most simple analytic forms for the scattering coefficients $(T(k),R(k),|\det S(k)|)$. On one hand, these forms demonstrate earlier effects and confirm the recent ones. On the other hand they make new predictions - all simply and analytically. We show the possibilities of both self-dual and non-self-dual spectral singularities (NSDSS) in two non-P…
We introduce a new class of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric complex crystals which are almost transparent and one-way reflectionless over a broad frequency range around the Bragg frequency, i.e. unidirectionally invisible, regardless of the thickness $L$ of the crystal. The $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric complex crystal is synthesized by a supersymmetric transformation of an Hermitian square well potential, and exact analytical expressions of transmission and reflection coefficients are given. As $L$ is increased, the transmittance and reflectance from one side remain close to one and zero, respectively, w…
