On a family of classical dynamical systems on the 2-torus, we perform a discretization procedure similar to the Anti-Wick quantization. Such a discretization is performed by using a particular class of states, fulfilling an appropriate dynamical localization property, typical of quantum Coherent States. The same set of states is involved in the construction of a quantum entropy, that we test on the discrete approximants; a correspondence with the classical metric entropy of Kolmogorov-Sinai is found only over time scales that are logarithmic in the discretization parameter.
We discuss certain analogies between quantization and discretization of classical systems on manifolds. In particular, we will apply the quantum dynamical entropy of Alicki and Fannes to numerically study the footprints of chaos in discretized versions of hyperbolic maps on the torus.
The entropic uncertainty measures of the multidimensional hydrogenic states quantify the multiple facets of the spatial delocalization of the electronic probability density of the system. The Shannon entropy is the most adequate uncertainty measure to quantify the electronic spreading and to mathematically formalize the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, partially because it does not depend on any specific point of their multidimensional domain of definition. In this work the radial and angular parts of the Shannon entropies for all the discrete stationary states of the multidimensional hydroge…
We investigate minimum output (Rényi) entropy of qubit channels and unital quantum channels. We obtain an exact formula for the minimum output entropy of qubit channels, and bounds for unital quantum channels. Interestingly, our bounds depend only on the operator norm of the matrix representation of the channels on the space of trace-less Hermitian operators. Moreover, since these bounds respect tensor products, we get bounds for the capacity of unital quantum channels, which is saturated by the Werner-Holevo channel. Furthermore, we construct an orthonormal basis, besides the Gell-Mann basis,…
The Tsallis and Rényi entropies are important quantities in the information theory, statistics and related fields because the Tsallis entropy is an one parameter generalization of the Shannon entropy and the Rényi entropy includes several useful entropy measures such as the Shannon entropy, Min-entropy and so on, as special choices of its parameter. On the other hand, the discrete-time quantum walk plays important roles in various applications, for example, quantum speed-up algorithm and universal computation. In this paper, we show limiting behaviors of the Tsallis and Rényi entropies for dis…
One of the most important and useful entropic uncertainty relations concerns a $d$ dimensional system and two mutually unbiased measurements. In such a setting, the sum of two information entropies is lower bounded by $\ln d$. It has recently been shown that projective measurements subject to operational mutual unbiasedness can also be constructed in a continuous domain, with the help of periodic coarse graining. Here we consider the whole family of Rényi entropies applied to these discretized observables and prove that such a scheme does also admit the uncertainty relation mentioned above.
A realistic Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocol necessarily deals with finite resources, such as the number of signals exchanged by the two parties. We derive a bound on the secret key rate which is expressed as an optimization problem over Rényi entropies. Under the assumption of collective attacks by an eavesdropper, a computable estimate of our bound for the six-state protocol is provided. This bound leads to improved key rates in comparison to previous results.
We formulate three current models of discrete-time quantum walks in a combinatorial way. These walks are shown to be closely related to rotation systems and 1-factorizations of graphs. For two of the models, we compute the traces and total entropies of the average mixing matrices for some cubic graphs. The trace captures how likely a quantum walk is to revisit the state it started with, and the total entropy measures how close the limiting distribution is to uniform. Our numerical results indicate three relations between quantum walks and graph structures: for the first model, rotation systems…
Any physical system can be viewed from the perspective that information is implicitly represented in its state. However, the quantification of this information when it comes to complex networks has remained largely elusive. In this work, we use techniques inspired by quantum statistical mechanics to define an entropy measure for complex networks and to develop a set of information-theoretic tools, based on network spectral properties, such as Renyi q-entropy, generalized Kullback-Leibler and Jensen-Shannon divergences, the latter allowing us to define a natural distance measure between complex…
Purely multiplicative comparisons of quantum relative entropy are desirable but challenging to prove. We show such comparisons for relative entropies between comparable densities, including the relative entropy of a density with respect to its subalgebraic restriction. These inequalities are asymptotically tight in approaching known, tight inequalities as perturbation size approaches zero. Based on these results, we obtain a kind of inequality known as quasi-factorization or approximate tensorization of relative entropy. Quasi-factorization lower bounds the sum of a density's relative entropie…
Relations between Shannon entropy and Renyi entropies of integer order are discussed. For any N-point discrete probability distribution for which the Renyi entropies of order two and three are known, we provide an lower and an upper bound for the Shannon entropy. The average of both bounds provide an explicit extrapolation for this quantity. These results imply relations between the von Neumann entropy of a mixed quantum state, its linear entropy and traces.
The von Neumann entropy plays a vital role in quantum information theory. The von Neumann entropy determines, e.g., the capacities of quantum channels. Also, entropies of composite quantum systems are important for future quantum networks, and their characterization is related to the quantum marginal problem. Furthermore, they play a role in quantum thermodynamics. In this thesis the set of quantum entropies of multipartite quantum systems is studied. The problem of its characterization is not new -- however, progress has been sparse, indicating that the problem might be hard and that new meth…
Entanglement criteria for an $n$-partite quantum system with continuous variables are formulated in terms of Rényi entropies. Rényi entropies are widely used as a good information measure due to many nice properties. Derived entanglement criteria are based on several mathematical results such as the Hausdorff-Young inequality, Young's inequality for convolution and its converse. From the historical viewpoint, the formulations of these results with sharp constants were obtained comparatively recently. Using the position and momentum observables of subsystems, one can build two total-system meas…
This paper is prepared as a contribution to the proceedings after the 12th ICSSUR/Feynfest Conference held in Foz do Iguacu (Brazil) from 2 to 6 May 2011. In the first part I briefy report the topic of entropic uncertainty relations for position and momentum variables. Then I investigate the discrete Shannon entropies related to the case of fnite number of detectors set to measure probability distributions in position and momentum spaces. I derive an uncertainty relation for the sum of the Shannon entropies which generalizes previous approaches [Phys. Lett. 103 A, 253 (1984)] based on an infni…
An uncertainty relation for the Rényi entropies of conjugate quantum observables is used to obtain a strong Heisenberg limit of the form ${\rm RMSE} \geq f(α)/(\langle N\rangle+\frac12)$, bounding the root mean square error of any estimate of a random optical phase shift in terms of average photon number, where $f(α)$ is maximised for non-Shannon entropies. Related simple yet strong uncertainty relations linking phase uncertainty to the photon number distribution, such as $ΔΦ\geq \max_n p_n$, are also obtained. These results are significantly strengthened via upper and lower bounds on the Rény…
We present a general theory of comparison of quantum channels, concerning with the question of simulability or approximate simulability of a given quantum channel by allowed transformations of another given channel. We introduce a modification of conditional min-entropies, with respect to the set F of allowed transformations, and show that under some conditions on F, these quantities characterize approximate simulability. If F is the set of free superchannels in a quantum resource theory of processes, the modified conditional min-entropies form a complete set of resource monotones. If the tran…
Quantum uncertainty relations are formulated in terms of relative entropy between distributions of measurement outcomes and suitable reference distributions with maximum entropy. This type of entropic uncertainty relation can be applied directly to observables with either discrete or continuous spectra. We find that a sum of relative entropies is bounded from above in a nontrivial way, which we illustrate with some examples.
Quantum states can be subjected to classical measurements, whose incompatibility, or uncertainty, can be quantified by a comparison of certain entropies. There is a long history of such entropy inequalities between position and momentum. Recently these inequalities have been generalized to the tensor product of several Hilbert spaces and we show here how their derivations can be shortened to a few lines and how they can be generalized. All the recently derived uncertainty relations utilize the strong subadditivity (SSA) theorem; our contribution relies on directly utilizing the proof technique…
Using the example of the Jaynes-Cummings model, we present a comparison between time-delayed coherent feedback mediated by reservoirs with continuous and discrete mode structures and work out their qualitative differences. In contrast to the discrete-mode case, the continuous-mode case results in the well-known single-delay dynamics which can, e.g., stabilize Rabi oscillations. The discrete-mode case, however, shows population trapping, not present in the continuous-mode model. Given these differences, we discuss the cavity output spectra and show how these characteristic properties are spectr…
We investigate quantum Rényi entropic quantities, specifically those derived from 'sandwiched' divergence. This divergence is one of several proposed Rényi generalisations of the quantum relative entropy. We may define Rényi generalisations of the quantum conditional entropy and mutual information in terms of this divergence, from which they inherit many desirable properties. However, these quantities lack some of the convenient structure of their Shannon and von Neumann counterparts. We attempt to bridge this gap by establishing divergence inequalities for valid combinations of Rényi order wh…
Using the density matrix renormalization group, we calculated the finite-size corrections of the entanglement $α$-Renyi entropy of a single interval for several critical quantum chains. We considered models with U(1) symmetry like the spin-1/2 XXZ and spin-1 Fateev-Zamolodchikov models, as well models with discrete symmetries such as the Ising, the Blume-Capel and the three-state Potts models. These corrections contain physically relevant information. Their amplitudes, that depend on the value of $α$, are related to the dimensions of operators in the conformal field theory governing the long-d…
