We present a general theory of comparison of quantum channels, concerning with the question of simulability or approximate simulability of a given quantum channel by allowed transformations of another given channel. We introduce a modification of conditional min-entropies, with respect to the set F of allowed transformations, and show that under some conditions on F, these quantities characterize approximate simulability. If F is the set of free superchannels in a quantum resource theory of processes, the modified conditional min-entropies form a complete set of resource monotones. If the transformations in F consist of a preprocessing and a postprocessing of specified forms, approximate simulability is also characterized in terms of success probabilities in certain guessing games, where a preprocessing of a given form can be chosen and the measurements are restricted. These results are applied to several specific cases of simulability of quantum channels, including postprocessings, preprocessings and processing of bipartite channels by LOCC superchannels and by partial superchannels, as well as simulability of sets of quantum measurements.
These questions are first studied in a general setting that is an extension of the framework of general probabilistic theories (GPT), suitable for dealing with channels. Here we prove a general theorem that shows that approximate simulability can be characterized by comparing outcome probabilities in certain tests. This result is inspired by the classical Le Cam randomization criterion for statistical experiments and contains its finite dimensional version as a special case.
In this paper, we analyze the evolution of the generalized Pauli channels governed by the memory kernel master equation. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the memory kernel to give rise to the legitimate (completely positive and trace-preserving) quantum evolution. In particular, we analyze a class of kernels generating the quantum semi-Markov evolution, which is a natural generalization of the Markovian semigroup. Interestingly, the convex combination of Markovian semigroups goes beyond the semi-Markov case. Our analysis is illustrated with several examples.
Quantum Private Comparison (QPC) allows us to protect private information during its comparison. In the past various three-party quantum protocols have been proposed that claim to work well under noisy conditions. Here we tackle the problem of QPC under noise. We analyze the EPR-based protocol under depolarizing noise, bit flip and phase flip noise. We show how noise affects the robustness of the EPR-based protocol. We then present a straightforward protocol based on CSS codes to perform QPC which is robust against noise and secure under general attacks.
For minimum-error channel discrimination tasks that involve only unitary channels, we show that sequential strategies may outperform the parallel ones. Additionally, we show that general strategies that involve indefinite causal order are also advantageous for this task. However, for the task of discriminating a uniformly distributed set of unitary channels that forms a group, we show that parallel strategies are, indeed, optimal, even when compared to general strategies. We also show that strategies based on the quantum switch cannot outperform sequential strategies in the discrimination of u…
We study one-mode Gaussian quantum channels in continuous-variable systems by performing a black-box characterization using complete positivity and trace preserving conditions, and report the existence of two subsets that do not have a functional Gaussian form. Our study covers as particular limit the case of singular channels, thus connecting our results with their known classification scheme based on canonical forms. Our full characterization of Gaussian channels without Gaussian functional form is completed by showing how Gaussian states are transformed under these operations, and by derivi…

We analyze three quantum communication protocols that have been proposed in the literature, and compare how well they communicate single-rail entanglement. We use specific metrics for output state purity and probability of success and include the presence of imperfect photon source and detection components. We find that a distributed noiseless linear amplification (NLA) protocol with a relay point placed half-way between Alice and Bob outperforms NLA at Bob's end and a recently proposed purification protocol under most conditions, unless the distance is very small or the photon source componen…
The Continuous-Variable (CV) quantum state of light allows for the teleportation of a Discrete-Variable (DV) photonic qubit. Such an operation is useful in the realm of hybrid quantum networks. However, it is known that the teleportation of a DV qubit via a Gaussian CV resource channel is severely limited under channel loss, with a teleportation fidelity beyond the classical limit unattainable for losses exceeding a small threshold of 0.5 dB. In this work, we present a new non-deterministic teleportation protocol that combines a Gaussian CV resource channel with a modified form of the Bell Sta…
A ternary ring of operators (TRO) in finite dimensions is a diagonal sum of spaces of rectangular matrices. TRO as operator space corresponds to quantum channels that are diagonal sums of partial traces, which we call TRO channels. TRO channels admits simple, single-letter capacity formula. Using operator space and complex interpolation techniques, we give perturbative capacities estimates for a wider class of quantum channels by comparison to TRO channels. Our estimates applies mainly for quantum and private capacity and also strong converse rates. The examples includes random unitary from gr…
Non-locality and steering are both non-classical phenomena witnessed in Nature as a result of quantum entanglement. It is now well-established that one can study non-locality independently of the formalism of quantum mechanics, in the so-called device-independent framework. With regards to steering, although one cannot study it completely independently of the quantum formalism, "post-quantum steering" has been described, which is steering that cannot be reproduced by measurements on entangled states, but do not lead to superluminal signalling. In this work we present a framework based on the s…
This paper considers the comparison of noisy channels from the viewpoint of statistical decision theory. Various orderings are discussed, all formalizing the idea that one channel is "better" than another for information transmission. The main result is an equivalence relation that is proved for classical channels, quantum channels with classical encoding, and quantum channels with quantum encoding.
We develop differential measurement protocols that circumvent the laser noise limit in the stability of optical clock comparisons by synchronous probing of two clocks using phase-locked local oscillators. This allows for probe times longer than the laser coherence time, avoids the Dick effect, and supports Heisenberg-limited measurement precision. We present protocols for such frequency comparisons and develop numerical simulations of the protocols with realistic noise sources. These methods provide a route to reduce frequency ratio measurement durations by more than an order of magnitude.
Classical simulations of noisy stabilizer circuits are often used to estimate the threshold of a quantum error-correcting code. Physical noise sources are efficiently approximated by random insertions of Pauli operators. For a single qubit, more accurate approximations that still allow for efficient simulation can be obtained by including Clifford operators and Pauli operators conditional on measurement in the noise model. We examine the feasibility of employing these expanded error approximations to obtain better threshold estimates. We calculate the level-1 pseudothreshold for the Steane [[7…
We present a full implementation of a quantum key distribution system using energy-time entangled photon pairs and functioning with a 30km standard telecom fiber quantum channel. Two bases of two orthogonal states are implemented and the setup is quite robust to environmental constraints such as temperature variation. Two different ways to manage chromatic dispersion in the quantum channel are discussed.

Recently, the Gaussian optimizer conjecture in quantum information theory was confirmed for bosonic Gaussian gauge-covariant or contravariant channels. These results use the i.i.d. model of the quantum noise. In this paper we consider quantum Gaussian signal+noise model with time-continuous stationary coloured noise. A proof of the coding theorem for the classical capacity of quantum broadband gauge-covariant Gaussian channels is given. We also discuss and compare the "broadband" and the "bandpass" models of time-continuous time-continuous stationary coloured noise.
For a pair of quantum channels with the same input space, we show that the possibility of approximation of one channel by post-processings of the other channel can be characterized by comparing the success probabilities for the two ensembles obtained as outputs for any ensemble on the input space coupled with an ancilla. This provides an operational interpretation to a natural extension of Le Cam's deficiency to quantum channels. In particular, we obtain a version of the randomization criterion for quantum statistical experiments. The proofs are based on some properties of the diamond norm and…

A direct quantization of the Newtonian interaction between two masses is known to establish entanglement, which if detected would witness the quantum nature of the gravitational field. Gravitational interaction is yet compatible also with gravitational decoherence models relying on classical channels, hence unable to create entanglement. Here, we show in paradigmatic cases that, despite the absence of entanglement, a classical-channel model of gravity can still establish quantum correlations in the form of quantum discord between two masses. This is demonstrated for the Kafri-Taylor-Milburn (K…
We extend the definition of the conditional min-entropy from bipartite quantum states to bipartite quantum channels. We show that many of the properties of the conditional min-entropy carry over to the extended version, including an operational interpretation as a guessing probability when one of the subsystems is classical. We then show that the extended conditional min-entropy can be used to fully characterize when two bipartite quantum channels are related to each other via a superchannel (also known as supermap or a comb) that is acting on one of the subsystems. This relation is a pre-orde…
We provide an exact solution of the Efimov spectrum in ultracold gases within the standard two-channel model for Feshbach resonances. It is shown that the finite range in the Feshbach coupling makes the introduction of an adjustable three-body parameter obsolete. The solution explains the empirical relation between the scattering length a_- where the first Efimov state appears at the atom threshold and the van der Waals length l_vdw for open channel dominated resonances. There is a continuous crossover to the closed channel dominated limit, where the scale in the energy level diagram as a func…
