Motivated by the idea of entanglement loss along Renormalization Group flows, analytical majorization relations are proven for the ground state of (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories. For any of these theories, majorization is proven to hold in the spectrum of the reduced density matrices in a bipartite system when changing the size L of one of the subsystems. Continuous majorization along uniparametric flows is also proven as long as part of the conformal structure is preserved under the deformation and some monotonicity conditions hold as well. As particular examples of our derivations, we study the cases of the XX, Heisenberg and XY quantum spin chains. Our results provide in a rigorous way explicit proves for all the majorization conjectures raised by Latorre, Lutken, Rico, Vidal and Kitaev in previous papers on quantum spin chains.
In this paper we investigate the relationship between direct-sum majorization formulation of uncertainty relations and entanglement, for the case of two and many observables. Our primary results are entanglement detection methods based on direct-sum majorization uncertainty relations. These nonlinear detectors provide a set of necessary conditions for detecting entanglement whose number grows with the dimension of the state being detected.
We study the problem of deterministic transformations of an \textit{initial} pure entangled quantum state, $|ψ\rangle$, into a \textit{target} pure entangled quantum state, $|ϕ\rangle$, by using \textit{local operations and classical communication} (LOCC). A celebrated result of Nielsen [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{83}, 436 (1999)] gives the necessary and sufficient condition that makes this entanglement transformation process possible. Indeed, this process can be achieved if and only if the majorization relation $ψ\prec ϕ$ holds, where $ψ$ and $ϕ$ are probability vectors obtained by taking the s…

The uncertainty principle and entanglement are two fundamental, but yet not well understood, features of quantum theory. The uncertainty relation reflects the capability limit in acquiring the knowledge of different physical properties of a particle simultaneously, while on the other side, the quantum entanglement renders the entangled quanta lose their independence, including measurements imposed on them. By virtue of the majorization, here we establish a general correlation relation for quantum uncertainty and multipartite entanglement. Within this scheme, the optimization problems for entro…
Motivated by the need to uncover some underlying mathematical structure of optimal quantum computation, we carry out a systematic analysis of a wide variety of quantum algorithms from the majorization theory point of view. We conclude that step-by-step majorization is found in the known instances of fast and efficient algorithms, namely in the quantum Fourier transform, in Grover's algorithm, in the hidden affine function problem, in searching by quantum adiabatic evolution and in deterministic quantum walks in continuous time solving a classically hard problem. On the other hand, the optimal …
We address the problem of finding the optimal common resource for an arbitrary family of target states in quantum resource theories based on majorization, that is, theories whose conversion law between resources is determined by a majorization relationship, such as it happens with entanglement, coherence or purity. We provide a conclusive answer to this problem by appealing to the completeness property of the majorization lattice. We give a proof of this property that relies heavily on the more geometric construction provided by the Lorenz curves, which allows to explicitly obtain the correspo…
In the first part of this thesis, we present a general technique for establishing local and uniform continuity bounds for Schur concave functions. Our technique uses a particular relationship between majorization and the trace distance between quantum states. Namely, the majorization pre-order attains a minimum over $ε$-balls in this distance. By tracing the path of the majorization-minimizer as a function of the distance $ε$, we obtain the path of "majorization flow". This yields a new proof of the Audenaert-Fannes continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy in a universal framework which ex…

We test the principle of majorization [J. I. Latorre and M. A. Martin-Delgado, Phys. Rev. A 66, 022305 (2002)] in random circuits. Three classes of circuits were considered: (i) universal, (ii) classically simulatable, and (iii) neither universal nor classically simulatable. The studied families are: {CNOT, H, T}, {CNOT, H, NOT}, {CNOT, H, S} (Clifford), matchgates, and IQP (instantaneous quantum polynomial-time). We verified that all the families of circuits satisfy on average the principle of decreasing majorization. In most cases the asymptotic state (number of gates going to infinity) beha…
Uncertainty relation is not only of fundamental importance to quantum mechanics, but also crucial to the quantum information technology. Recently, majorization formulation of uncertainty relations (MURs) have been widely studied, ranging from two measurements to multiple measurements. Here, for the first time, we experimentally investigate MURs for two measurements and multiple measurements in the high-dimensional systems, and study the intrinsic distinction between direct-product MURs and direct-sum MURs. The experimental results reveal that by taking different nonnegative Schur-concave funct…

We derive an entropic uncertainty relation for generalized positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) measurements via a direct-sum majorization relation using Schur concavity of entropic quantities in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Our approach provides a significant improvement of the uncertainty bound compared with previous majorization-based approaches [S. Friendland, V. Gheorghiu and G. Gour, Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 230401 (2013); A. E. Rastegin and K. Życzkowski, J. Phys. A, 49, 355301 (2016)], particularly by extending the direct-sum majorization relation first introduced in [Ł. Rudnick…
Quantitative characterization of different entanglement detection criteria for bipartite systems is presented. We review the implication sequence of these criteria and then numerically estimate volume ratios between criteria non-violating quantum states and all quantum states. The numerical approach is based on the hit-and-run algorithm, which is applied to the convex set of all quantum states embedded into a Euclidean vector space of the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product. We demonstrate that reduction, majorization, and the Rényi-entropy-based criteria are very ineffective compared to the positiv…
Majorization uncertainty relations are derived for arbitrary quantum operations acting on a finite-dimensional space. The basic idea is to consider submatrices of block matrices comprised of the corresponding Kraus operators. This is an extension of the previous formulation, which deals with submatrices of a unitary matrix relating orthogonal bases in which measurements are performed. Two classes of majorization relations are considered: one related to tensor product of probability vectors and another one related to their direct sum. We explicitly discuss an example of a pair of one-qubit oper…
Employing the lattice theory on majorization, we investigate the universal quantum uncertainty relation for any number observables and general measurement. We find: 1. The least bounds of the universal uncertainty relations can only be properly defined in the lattice theory; 2. Contrary to variance and entropy, the metric induced by the majorization lattice implies an intrinsic structure of the quantum uncertainty; 3. The lattice theory correlates the optimization of uncertainty relation with the entanglement transformation under local quantum operation and classical communication. Interesting…
Distributing entanglement among multiple users is a fundamental problem in quantum networks, requiring an efficient solution. In this work, a protocol is proposed for extracting maximally entangled (GHZn) states for any number of parties in quantum networks of arbitrary topology. It is based on the graph state formalism and requires minimal assumptions on the network state. The protocol only requires local measurements at the network nodes and just a single qubit memory per user. Existing protocols on bipartite entanglement routing are also improved for specific nearest-neighbor network archit…
The problem of quantum state discrimination, which is a foundational aspect of quantum information theory, and its relation to the theory of majorization are discussed. The purpose of this study is to review different approaches to the problem and analyze different cases of quantum-state discrimination, most importantly the discrimination of bipartite entangled quantum states under local operations and classical communication. Two partial results on using entanglement as a resource for quantum-state discrimination and discrimination with remaining entanglement is given. The important points ar…

A renormalized version of the von Neumann quantum entropy (which is finite and continuous in general, infinite dimensional case) and which obeys several of the natural physical demands (as expected for a "good" measure of entanglement in the case of general quantum states describing bipartite and infinite-dimensional systems) is proposed. The renormalized quantum entropy is defined by the explicit use of the Fredholm determinants theory. To prove the main results on continuity and finiteness of the introduced renormalization the fundamental Grothendick approach, which is based on the infinite …
We show that one-body entanglement, which is a measure of the deviation of a pure fermionic state from a Slater determinant (SD) and is determined by the mixedness of the single-particle density matrix (SPDM), can be considered as a quantum resource. The associated theory has SDs and their convex hull as free states, and number conserving fermion linear optics operations (FLO), which include one-body unitary transformations and measurements of the occupancy of single-particle modes, as the basic free operations. We first provide a bipartitelike formulation of one-body entanglement, based on a …
The theory of majorization and its variants, including thermomajorization, have been found to play a central role in the formulation of many physical resource theories, ranging from entanglement theory to quantum thermodynamics. Here we formulate the framework of quantum relative Lorenz curves, and show how it is able to unify majorization, thermomajorization, and their noncommutative analogues. In doing so, we define the family of Hilbert $α$-divergences and show how it relates with other divergences used in quantum information theory. We then apply these tools to the problem of deciding the …
We propose four information-theoretic axioms for the foundations of statistical mechanics in general physical theories. The axioms---Causality, Purity Preservation, Pure Sharpness, and Purification---identify a class of theories where every mixed state can be modelled as the marginal of a pure entangled state and where every unsharp measurement can be modelled as a sharp measurement on a composite system. This class of theories, called sharp theories with purification, includes quantum theory both with complex and real amplitudes, as well as a suitable extension of classical probability theory…
Although entropy is a necessary and sufficient quantity to characterize the order of work content for equal energetic (EE) states in the asymptotic limit, for the finite quantum systems, the relation is not so linear and requires detail investigation. Toward this, we have considered a resource theoretic framework taking the energy preserving operations (EPO) as free, to compare the amount of extractable work from two different quantum states. Under EPO, majorization becomes a necessary criterion for state transformation. It is also shown that the passive state energy is a concave function and …
Taking advantage of coherent light beams, we experimentally investigate the variancebased uncertainty relations and the optimal majorization uncertainty relation for the two-dimensional quantum mechanical system.Different from most of the experiments which devoted to record each individual quantum, we examine the uncertainty relations by measuring an ensemble of photons with two polarization degree of freedom characterized by the Stokes parameters which allow us to determine the polarization density matrix with high precision. The optimality of the recently proposed direct-sum majorization unc…
Given a positive operator-valued measure $ν$ acting on the Borel sets of a locally compact Hausdorff space $X$, with outcomes in the algebra $\mathcal B(\mathcal H)$ of all bounded operators on a (possibly infinite-dimensional) Hilbert space $\mathcal H$, one can consider $ν$-integrable functions $X\rightarrow \mathcal B(\mathcal H)$ that are positive quantum random variables. We define a seminorm on the span of such functions which in the quotient leads to a Banach space. We consider bistochastic operators acting on this space and majorization of quantum random variables is then defined with …
We propose an extension of the quantum entropy power inequality for finite dimensional quantum systems, and prove a conditional quantum entropy power inequality by using the majorization relation as well as the concavity of entropic functions also given by Audenaert, Datta, and Ozols [J. Math. Phys. 57, 052202 (2016)]. Here, we make particular use of the fact that a specific local measurement after a partial swap operation (or partial swap quantum channel) acting only on finite dimensional bipartite subsystems does not affect the majorization relation for the conditional output states when a s…
