We propose a scheme for implementing a controlled unitary gate between two distant atoms directly communicating through a quantum transmission line. To achieve our goal, only a series of several coherent pulses are applied to the atoms. Our scheme thus requires no ancilla atomic qubit. The simplicity of our scheme may significantly improve the scalability of quantum computers based on trapped neutral atoms or ions.
By using an ancilla qubit as a mediator, two distant qubits can undergo a non-local entangling unitary operation. This is desirable for when attempting to scale up or distribute quantum computation by combining fixed static local sets of qubits with ballistic mediators. Using a model driven by measurements on the ancilla, it is possible to generate a maximally entangling CZ gate while only having access to a less entangling gate between the pair qubits and the ancilla. However this results in a stochastic process of generating control phase rotation gates where the expected time for success do…
We concretely construct an extension of the controlled-U gate in qudit from some elementary gates. We also construct unitary transformation in two-qudit by means of the extended controlled-U gate and show the universality of it.
Unitary operations are a fundamental component of quantum algorithms, but they seem to be far more useful if given with a "quantum control" as a controlled unitary operation. However, quantum operations are not limited to unitary operations. Nevertheless, it is not a priori clear if a controlled form of these general deterministic quantum operations can be well-defined. To provide a novel tool in the toolbox for quantum programming, we propose a mathematically consistent definition of a controlled form of deterministic but non-unitary quantum operations and, more generally, of quantum combs. W…
We propose a dissipative scheme to prepare a three-dimensional entangled state for two atoms trapped in separate coupled cavities. Our work shows that both atomic spontaneous emission and cavity decay, which are two typical obstacles in unitary-dynamics-based schemes, could be utilized as resources for high-dimensional entangled state preparation without specifying initial state and controlling time precisely. Final numerical simulation with one group of experimental parameters indicates that the performance of our scheme is better than the unitary-dynamics-based scheme.
Heralded near-deterministic multi-qubit controlled phase gates with integrated error detection have recently been proposed by Borregaard et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 110502 (2015)]. This protocol is based on a single four-level atom (a heralding quartit) and $N$ three-level atoms (operational qutrits) coupled to a single-resonator mode acting as a cavity bus. Here we generalize this method for two distant resonators without the cavity bus between the heralding and operational atoms. Specifically, we analyze the two-qubit controlled-Z gate and its multi-qubit-controlled generalization (i.e., a…
Implementing nonlocal unitary operators is an important and hard question in quantum computing and cryptography. We show that any bipartite nonlocal unitary operator of Schmidt rank three on the $(d_A \times d_B)$-dimensional system is locally equivalent to a controlled unitary when $d_A$ is at most three. This operator can be locally implemented assisted by a maximally entangled state of Schmidt rank $r=\min\{d_A^2,d_B\}$. We further show that stochastic-equivalent nonlocal unitary operators are indeed locally equivalent, and propose a sufficient condition on which nonlocal and controlled uni…
We show that any unitary operator on the $d_A\times d_B$ system ($d_A\ge 2$) can be decomposed into the product of at most $4d_A-5$ controlled unitary operators. The number can be reduced to $2d_A-1$ when $d_A$ is a power of two. We also prove that three controlled unitaries can implement a bipartite complex permutation operator, and discuss the connection to an analogous result on classical reversible circuits. We further show that any $n$-partite unitary on the space $\mathbb{C}^{d_1}\otimes...\otimes\mathbb{C}^{d_n}$ is the product of at most $[2\prod^{n-1}_{j=1}(2d_j-2)-1]$ controlled unit…
We introduce a scheme for realizing arbitrary controlled-unitary operations in a two qubit system. If the 2 \times 2 unitary matrix is special unitary (has unit determinant), the controlled-unitary gate operation can be realized in a single pulse operation. The pulse, in our scheme, will constitute varying one of the parameters of the system between an arbitrarily maximum and a "calculated" minimum value. This parameter will constitute the variable parameter of the system while the other parameters, which include the coupling between the two qubits, will be treated as fixed parameters. The val…
We investigate the minimum entanglement cost of the deterministic implementation of two-qubit controlled-unitary operations using local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We show that any such operation can be implemented by a three-turn LOCC protocol, which requires at least 1 ebit of entanglement when the resource is given by a bipartite entangled state with Schmidt number 2. Our result implies that there is a gap between the minimum entanglement cost and the entangling power of controlled-unitary operations. This gap arises due to the requirement of implementing the operations w…
We propose a robust scheme involving atoms fixed in an optical cavity to directly implement the universal controlled-unitary gate. The present technique based on adiabatic passage uses novel dark states well suited for the controlled-rotation operation. We show that these dark states allow the robust implementation of a gate that is a generalisation of the controlled-unitary gate to the case where the control qubit can be selected to be an arbitrary state. This gate has potential applications to the rapid implementation of quantum algorithms such as of the projective measurement algorithm. Thi…
Local implementation of non-local quantum gates is necessary in a distributed quantum computer. Here, we demonstrate the non-local implementation of controlled-unitary quantum gates proposed by Eisert et al. (Phys Rev A 62:052317, 2000) using the five-qubit IBM quantum computer. We verify the fidelity and accuracy of the implementation through the techniques of quantum state and process tomographies.
We study the entangling power and perfect entangler nature of (SWAP)1/m, for m>=1, and controlled unitary (CU) gates. It is shown that (SWAP)1/2 is the only perfect entangler in the family. On the other hand, a subset of CU which is locally equivalent to CNOT is identified. It is shown that the subset, which is a perfect entangler, must necessarily possess the maximum entangling power.
We show that it is possible to reduce the number of two-qubit gates needed for the construction of an arbitrary controlled-unitary transformation by up to two times using a tunable controlled-phase gate. On the platform of linear optics, where two-qubit gates can only be achieved probabilistically, our method significantly reduces the amount of components and increases success probability of a two-qubit gate. The experimental implementation of our technique presented in this paper for a controlled single-qubit unitary gate demonstrates that only one tunable controlled-phase gate is needed inst…
We prove that every unitary acting on any multipartite system and having operator Schmidt rank equal to 2 can be diagonalized by local unitaries. This then implies that every such multipartite unitary is locally equivalent to a controlled unitary with every party but one controlling a set of unitaries on the last party. We also prove that any bipartite unitary of Schmidt rank 2 is locally equivalent to a controlled unitary where either party can be chosen as the control, and at least one party can control with two terms, which implies that each such unitary can be implemented using local opera…
We propose a scheme for the generation of entangled states for two atoms trapped in separate cavities coupled to each other. The scheme is based on the competition between the unitary dynamics induced by the classical fields and the collective decays induced by the dissipation of two delocalized field modes. Under certain conditions, the symmetric or asymmetric entangled state is produced in the steady state. The analytical result shows that the distributed steady entanglement can be achieved with high fidelity independent of the initial state, and is robust against parameter fluctuations. We …
The controlled-not gate and the single qubit gates are considered elementary gates in quantum computing. It is natural to ask how many such elementary gates are needed to implement more elaborate gates or circuits. Recall that a controlled-U gate can be realized with two controlled-not gates and four single qubit gates. We prove that this implementation is optimal if and only if the matrix U satisfies the conditions tr U != 0, tr UX != 0, and det U != 1. We also derive optimal implementations in the non-generic cases.
A nonlocal bipartite unitary gate can sometimes be implemented using prior entanglement and only one round of classical communication in which the two parties send messages to each other simultaneously. This cuts the classical communication time by a half compared to the usual protocols, which require back-and-forth classical communication. We introduce such a "fast" protocol that can implement a class of controlled unitaries exactly, where the controlled operators form a subset of a projective representation of a finite group, which may be Abelian or non-Abelian. The entanglement cost is only…
Quantum circuit model is the most popular paradigm for implementing complex quantum computation. Based on Cartan decomposition, we show that $2(N-1)$ generalized controlled-$X$ (GCX) gates, $6$ single-qubit rotations about the $y$- and $z$-axes, and $N+5$ single-partite $y$- and $z$-rotation-types which are defined in this paper are sufficient to simulate a controlled-unitary gate $\mathcal{U}_{cu(2\otimes N)}$ with $A$ controlling on $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes \mathbb{C}^N$. In the scenario of the unitary gate $\mathcal{U}_{cd(M\otimes N)}$ with $M\geq3$ that is locally equivalent to a diagonal uni…
Each Bell state has the property that by performing just local operations on one qubit, the complete Bell basis can be generated. That is, states generated by local operations are totally distinguishable. This remarkable property is due to maximal quantum entanglement between the two particles. We present a set of local unitary transformations that generate out of partially entangled two-qubit state a set of four maximally distinguishable states that are mutually equally distant. We discuss quantum dense coding based on these alphabet states.
Preparing many body entangled states efficiently using available interactions is a challenging task. One solution may be to couple a system collectively with a probe that leaves residual entanglement in the system. We investigate the entanglement produced between two possibly distant qubits 1 and 2 that interact locally with a third qubit 3 under unitary evolution generated by pairwise Hamiltonians. For the case where the Hamiltonians commute, relevant to certain quantum nondemolition measurements, the entanglement between qubits 1 and 2 is calculated explicitly for several classes of initial …
We propose a quantum processor for the scalable quantum computation on microwave photons in distant one-dimensional superconducting resonators. It is composed of a common resonator R acting as a quantum bus and some distant resonators $r_j$ coupled to the bus in different positions assisted by superconducting quantum interferometer devices (SQUID), different from previous processors. R is coupled to one transmon qutrit, and the coupling strengths between $r_j$ and R can be fully tuned by the external flux through the SQUID. To show the processor can be used to achieve universal quantum computa…
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum gate in decoherence-free subspaces is of greatly practical importance due to its built-in fault tolerance, coherence stabilization virtues, and short run-time. Here we propose some compact schemes to implement two- and three-qubit controlled unitary quantum gates and Fredkin gate. For the controlled unitary quantum gates, the unitary operator acting on the target qubit is an arbitrary single-qubit gate operation. The controlled quantum gates can be directly implemented using non-adiabatic holonomy in decoherence-free subspaces and the required resource for the d…

We propose a scheme to measure the parity of two distant qubits, while ensuring that losses on the quantum channel between them does not destroy coherences within the parity subspaces. This capability enables deterministic preparation of highly entangled qubit states whose fidelity is not limited by the transmission loss. The key observation is that for a probe electromagnetic field in a particular quantum state, namely a superposition of two coherent states of opposite phases, the transmission loss stochastically applies a near-unitary back-action on the probe state. This leads to a parity me…
Arrays of qubits encoded in the ground-state manifold of neutral atoms trapped in optical (or magnetic) lattices appear to be a promising platform for the realization of a scalable quantum computer. Two-qubit conditional gates between nearest-neighbor qubits in the array can be implemented by exploiting the Rydberg blockade mechanism, as was shown by D. Jaksch et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2208 (2000)]. However, the energy shift due to dipole-dipole interactions causing the blockade falls off rapidly with the interatomic distance and protocols based on direct Rydberg blockade typically fail to …
We consider the implementation of an arbitrary unitary operation U upon a distant quantum system. This teleportation of U can be viewed as a quantum remote control. We investigate protocols which achieve this using local operations, classical communication and shared entanglement (LOCCSE). Lower bounds on the necessary entanglement and classical communication are determined using causality and the linearity of quantum mechanics. We examine in particular detail the resources required if the remote control is to be implemented as a classical black box. Under these circumstances, we prove that th…
We study efficient generations of random diagonal-unitary matrices, an ensemble of unitary matrices diagonal in a given basis with randomly distributed phases for their eigenvalues. Despite the simple algebraic structure, they cannot be achieved by quantum circuits composed of a few-qubit diagonal gates. We introduce diagonal-unitary $t$-designs and present two quantum circuits that implement diagonal-unitary $2$-designs with the computational basis in $N$-qubit systems. One is composed of single-qubit diagonal gates and controlled-phase gates with randomized phases, which achieves an exact di…
Multi-controlled unitary gates have been a subject of interest in quantum computing since its inception, and are widely used in quantum algorithms. The current state-of-the-art approach to implementing n-qubit multi-controlled gates involves the use of a quadratic number of single-qubit and CNOT gates. However, linear solutions are possible for the case where the controlled gate is a special unitary SU(2). The most widely-used decomposition of an n-qubit multi-controlled SU(2) gate requires a circuit with a number of CNOT gates proportional to 28n. In this work, we present a new decomposition …
Unitary operations are physically implementable. We further the understanding of such operations by studying the possible forms of nonlocal unitary operators, which are bipartite or multipartite unitary operators that are not tensor product operators. They are of broad relevance in quantum information processing. We prove that any nonlocal unitary operator of Schmidt rank three on a $d_A\times d_B$ bipartite system is locally equivalent to a controlled unitary. This operator can be locally implemented assisted by a maximally entangled state of Schmidt rank $\min\{d_A^2,d_B\}$ when $d_A\le d_B$…
We propose a scheme enabling controlled quantum coherent interactions between separated nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond in the presence of strong magnetic fluctuations. The proposed scheme couples nuclear qubits employing the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between the electron spins and, crucially, benefits from the suppression of the effect of environmental magnetic field fluctuations thanks to a strong microwave driving. This scheme provides a basic building block for a full-scale quantum information processor or quantum simulator based on solid-state technology.
Nowadays, quantum router is playing a key role in quantum communication and quantum network- s. Here we propose a tunable single-photon routing scheme, based on quantum interference, which uses two distant artificial atoms coupling to two transmission lines. Depending on the distance between the two atoms, the collective effect will lead to destructive or constructive interference between the scattered photons. Under standing wave condition, single photon from the incident channel can be perfectly transmitted or redirected into another channel by asymmetric or symmet- ric reflected phase shift…
We establish heralded interaction between two remotely trapped single 40Ca+ ions through the exchange of single photons. In the sender ion, we release single photons with controlled temporal shape on the P_3/2 to D_5/2 transition and transmit them to the distant receiver ion. Individual absorption events in the receiver ion are detected by quantum jumps. For continuously generated photons, the absorption reduces significantly the lifetime of the long-lived D_5/2 state. For triggered single-photon transmission, we observe coincidence between the emission at the sender and quantum jump events at…
We show that the coherent coupling of atomic qubits at distant nodes of a quantum network, composed of several cavities linked by optical fibers, can be arbitrarily controlled via the selective pairing of Raman transitions. The adiabatic elimination of the atomic excited states and photonic states leads to selective qubit-qubit interactions, which would have important applications in quantum information processing. Quantum gates between any pair of distant qubits and parallel two-qubit operations on selected qubit pairs can be implemented through suitable choices of the parameters of the exter…
We consider several problems that involve finding the eigenvalues and generating the eigenstates of unknown unitary gates. We first examine Controlled-U gates that act on qubits, and assume that we know the eigenvalues. It is then shown how to use singlet states to produce qubits in the eigenstates of the gate. We then remove the assumption that we know the eigenvalues and show how to both find the eigenvalues and produce qubits in the eigenstates. Finally, we look at the case where the unitary operator acts on qutrits and has eigenvalues of 1 and -1, where the eigenvalue 1 is doubly degenerat…
We investigate the asymptotic dynamics of quantum networks under repeated applications of random unitary operations. It is shown that in the asymptotic limit of large numbers of iterations this dynamics is generally governed by a typically low dimensional attractor space. This space is determined completely by the unitary operations involved and it is independent of the probabilities with which these unitary operations are applied. Based on this general feature analytical results are presented for the asymptotic dynamics of arbitrarily large cyclic qubit networks whose nodes are coupled by ran…
Discrimination between unknown processes chosen from a finite set is experimentally shown to be possible even in the case of non-orthogonal processes. We demonstrate unambiguous deterministic quantum process discrimination (QPD) of non-orthogonal processes using properties of entanglement, additional known unitaries, or higher dimensional systems. Single qubit measurement and unitary processes and multipartite unitaries (where the unitary acts non-separably across two distant locations) acting on photons are discriminated with a confidence of $\geq97%$ in all cases.
We investigate how originally localized two pieces of quantum information represented by a tensor product of two unknown qudit states are delocalized by performing two-qudit global unitary operations. To characterize the delocalization power of global unitary operations on quantum information, we analyze the necessary and sufficient condition to deterministically relocalize one of the two pieces of quantum information to its original Hilbert space by using only LOCC. We prove that this LOCC one-piece relocalization is possible if and only if the global unitary operation is local unitary equiva…
For a number of useful quantum circuits, qudit constructions have been found which reduce resource requirements compared to the best known or best possible qubit construction. However, many of the necessary qutrit gates in these constructions have never been explicitly and efficiently constructed in a fault-tolerant manner. We show how to exactly and unitarily construct any qutrit multiple-controlled Clifford+T unitary using just Clifford+T gates and without using ancillae. The T-count to do so is polynomial in the number of controls $k$, scaling as $O(k^{3.585})$. With our results we can cons…
In order to investigate distributed quantum computation under restricted network resources, we introduce a quantum computation task over the butterfly network where both quantum and classical communications are limited. We consider deterministically performing a two-qubit global unitary operation on two unknown inputs given at different nodes, with outputs at two distinct nodes. By using a particular resource setting introduced by M. Hayashi [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{76}, 040301(R) (2007)], which is capable of performing a swap operation by adding two maximally entangled qubits (ebits) between the…
We analyze the asymptotic dynamics of quantum systems resulting from large numbers of iterations of random unitary operations. Although, in general, these quantum operations cannot be diagonalized it is shown that their resulting asymptotic dynamics is described by a diagonalizable superoperator. We prove that this asymptotic dynamics takes place in a typically low dimensional attractor space which is independent of the probability distribution of the unitary operations applied. This vector space is spanned by all eigenvectors of the unitary operations involved which are associated with eigenv…
We present a method to engineer the unitary charge conjugation operator, as given by quantum field theory, in the highly controlled context of quantum optics, thus allowing one to simulate the creation of charged particles with well-defined momenta simultaneously with their respective antiparticles. Our method relies on trapped ions driven by a laser field and interacting with a single mode of a light field in a high Q cavity.
The factorized form of the unitary coupled-cluster approximation is one of the most promising methodologies to prepare trial states for strongly correlated systems within the variational quantum eigensolver framework. The factorized form of the UCC ansatz can be systematically applied to a reference state to generate the desired entanglement. The difficulty associated with such an approach is the requirement of simultaneously entangling a growing number of qubits, which quickly exceeds the hardware limitations of today's quantum machines. In particular, while circuits for singles and double ex…
It is known from Schmidt decomposition that Schmidt number of nonlocal two-qubit quantum gates is 2 or 4. We identify conditions on geometrical points of a gate to have Schmidt number 2. A simple analysis reveals that Schmidt number 2 corresponds to controlled unitary gates with CNOT being the only perfect entangler. Further, it is shown that Schmidt strength and entangling power are maximum only for CNOT in the controlled unitary family.
We consider the problem of bi-directional controlled quantum teleportation of information encoded in phase opposite coherent state among two distant partners Alice and Bob, with the consent of controller, Charlie. We use five-mode cluster-type entangled coherent state as the quantum resource to achieve this task. The scheme uses linear optical devices such as beam splitter, phase shifters, and photon counters. We have shown that for moderately large coherent amplitude, near-perfect bi-directional controlled teleportation can be obtained in terms of the average fidelity of teleportation.
In this paper, we study the optimal simulation of three-qubit unitary by using two-qubit gates. First, we give a lower bound on the two-qubit gates cost of simulating a multi-qubit gate. Secondly, we completely characterize the two-qubit gate cost of simulating a three-qubit controlled controlled gate by generalizing our result on the cost of Toffoli gate. The function of controlled controlled gate is simply a three-qubit controlled unitary gate and can be intuitively explained as follows: the gate will output the states of the two control qubit directly, and apply the given one-qubit unitary …
We characterise a model of universal quantum computation where the register (computational) qubits are controlled by ancillary qubits, using only a single fixed interaction between register and ancillary qubits. No additional access is required to the computational register and the dynamics of both the register and ancilla are unitary. This scheme is inspired by the measurement-based ancilla-driven quantum computation of Anders et al. [PRA 82, 020301(R), 2010], but does not require measurements of the ancillas, and in this respect is similar to the original gate based model of quantum computat…
We introduce a twisted Heisenberg-type interaction Hamiltonian, a Heisenberg-type spin interaction where the coordinates of the second qubit are twisted according to a unitary gate. We develop parallelizable adiabatic gate teleportation (PAGT) where a sequence of unitary gates is performed in a single step of the adiabatic process. In PAGT, numeric calculations suggest the necessary time for the adiabatic evolution implementing a sequence of $L$ unitary gates increases at most as $O(L^5)$. However, we show that it has the interesting property that it can map the temporal order of gates to the …
