A basic introduction to the $su(1,1)$ algebra is presented, in which we discuss the relation with canonical transformations, the realization in terms of quantized radiation field modes and coherent states. Instead of going into details of these topics, we rather emphasize the existing connections between them. We discuss two parametrizations of the coherent states manifold $SU(1,1)/U(1)$: as the Poincar{é} disk in the complex plane and as the pseudosphere (a sphere in a Minkowskian space), and show that it is a natural phase space for quantum systems with SU(1,1) symmetry.
A short review of the main properties of coherent and squeezed states is given in introductory form. The efforts are addressed to clarify concepts and notions, including some passages of the history of science, with the aim of facilitating the subject for nonspecialists. In this sense, the present work is intended to be complementary to other papers of the same nature and subject in current circulation.
In this letter we make a brief review of some basic properties (the matrix elements, the trace, the Glauber formula) of coherent operators and study the corresponding ones for generalized coherent operators based on Lie algebra su(1,1). We also propose some problems.
We discuss some basic tools for an analysis of one-dimensionalquantum systems defined on a cyclic coordinate space. The basic features of the generalized coherent states, the complexifier coherent states are reviewed. These states are then used to define the corresponding (quasi)densities in phase space. The properties of these generalized Husimi distributions are discussed, in particular their zeros.Furthermore, the use of the complexifier coherent states for a semiclassical analysis is demonstrated by deriving a semiclassical coherent state propagator in phase space.
This is a continuation of the paper (quant-ph/0009012). In this letter we extend coherent operators and study some basic properties (the disentangling formula, resolution of unity, commutation relation, etc). We also propose a perspective of our work.
In this paper we treat coherent-squeezed states of Fock space once more and study some basic properties of them from a geometrical point of view. Since the set of coherent-squeezed states $\{\ket{α, β}\ |\ α, β\in \fukuso\}$ makes a real 4-dimensional surface in the Fock space ${\cal F}$ (which is of course not flat), we can calculate its metric. On the other hand, we know that coherent-squeezed states satisfy the minimal uncertainty of Heisenberg under some condition imposed on the parameter space $\{α, β\}$, so that we can study the metric from the view point of uncertainty principle. Then w…
We develop a basic formulation of the spin (SU(2)) coherent state path integrals based not on the conventional highest or lowest weight vectors but on arbitrary fiducial vectors. The coherent states, being defined on a 3-sphere, are specified by a full set of Euler angles. They are generally considered as states without classical analogues. The overcompleteness relation holds for the states, by which we obtain the time evolution of general systems in terms of the path integral representation; the resultant Lagrangian in the action has a monopole-type term a la Balachandran etal. as well as som…
In this paper we study some basic quantum confinement effects through investigation of a deformed harmonic oscillator algebra. We show that spatial confinement effects on a quantum harmonic oscillator can be represented by a deformation function within the framework of nonlinear coherent states theory. We construct the coherent states associated with the spatially confined quantum harmonic oscillator in a one-dimensional infinite well and examine some of their quantum statistical properties, including sub-poissonian statistics and quadrature squeezing.
We study some basic quantum confinement effects through investigation a deformed harmonic oscillator algebra. We show that spatial confinement effects on a quantum harmonic oscillator can be represented by a deformation function within the framework of nonlinear coherent states theory. Using the deformed algebra, we construct a quantum field theory in confined space. In particular, we find that the confinement influences on some physical properties of the electromagnetic field and it gives rise to nonlinear interaction. Furthermore, we propose a physical scheme to generate the nonlinear cohere…
A basic feasible probabilistic purification of unknown noisy coherent states, outgoing from different state preparations with unknown mean number of thermal photons, is proposed. The scheme is based only on a linear-optical network with an avalanche photo-diode or heterodyne (homodyne) detection used to post-select a successful processing. The suggested probabilistic method can produce an output state with a lower noise than both quantum deterministic and classical probabilistic distillation method. The purification applied in the state preparation can increase classical capacity of communicat…
This is a study of the security of the Coherent One-Way (COW) protocol for quantum cryptography, proposed recently as a simple and fast experimental scheme. In the zero-error regime, the eavesdropper Eve can only take advantage of the losses in the transmission. We consider new attacks, based on unambiguous state discrimination, which perform better than the basic beam-splitting attack, but which can be detected by a careful analysis of the detection statistics. These results stress the importance of testing several statistical parameters in order to achieve higher rates of secret bits.
We construct a displacement operator type nonlinear coherent state and examine some of its properties. In particular it is shown that this nonlinear coherent state exhibits nonclassical properties like squeezing and sub-Poissonian behaviour.
Considering some important classes of generalized coherent states known in literature, we demonstrated that all of them can be created via conventional fashion, i.e. the "lowering operator eigen-state" and the "displacement operator" techniques using the {\it "nonlinear coherent states"} approach. As a result we obtained a {\it "unified method"} to construct a large class of coherent states which already have been introduced by different prescriptions.
By using the overcompleteness of coherent states we find an alternative form of the unit operator for which the ket and the bra appearing under the integration sign do not refer to the same phase-space point. This defines a new quantum representation in terms of Bargmann functions, whose basic features are presented. A continuous family of secondary reproducing kernels for the Bargmann functions is obtained, showing that this quantity is not necessarily unique for representations based on overcomplete sets. We illustrate the applicability of the presented results by deriving a semiclassical ex…
As basic elements of the quantum computer - quantum bits (qubits) we offer semiconductor quantum dots containing one electron each and consisting each of two tunnel-connected parts. The numerical solution of a Schroedinger equation with the account of Coulomb field of adjacent electrons shows, that in such structures the realization of a full set of basic logic operations which are necessary for fulfillment of quantum computations is possible. Durations of one- and two-qubit operations versus qubit geometry are obtained. Decoherence rates due to spontaneous emission of phonons and acoustic pho…
We discuss the implementation of a beam splitter for electron waves in a quantum Hall bilayer. Our architecture exploits inter-layer tunneling to mix edge states belonging to different layers. We discuss the basic working principle of the proposed coherent edge mixer, possible interferometric implementations based on existing semiconductor-heterojunction technologies, and advantages with respect to canonical quantum Hall interferometers based on quantum point contacts.
Using the f-deformed oscillator formalism, we introduce two types of squeezed coherent states for a Morse potential system (Morse-like squeezed coherent states) through the following definitions: i) as approximate eigenstates of a linear combination of f-deformed ladder operators and ii) as deformed photon-subtracted coherent states. For the states thus constructed we analyze their statistical properties, their uncertainty relations, and their temporal evolution on phase space.
The basic Leggett inequalities, i.e. those inequalities in which the particular assumptions of Leggett's hidden-variable model (e.g. Malus law) were not yet introduced, are usually derived using hidden-variable distributions of probabilities (although in some cases completely general, positive probabilities would lead to the same result). This fact creates sometimes the illusion that these basic inequalities are a belonging of the hidden-variable theories and are bound to contradict the quantum theory. In the present text the basic Leggett inequalities are derived in the most general way, i.e.…
We review some basic elements on k-fermions, which are objects interpolating between bosons and fermions. In particular, we define k-fermionic coherent states and study some of their properties. The decomposition of a Q-uon into a boson and a k-fermion leads to a definition of fractional supercoherent states. Such states involve bosonic coherent states and k-fermionic coherent states. We construct an Hamiltonian which generalizes the ordinary (or Z_2-graded) supersymmetric oscillator Hamiltonian. Our Hamiltonian describes a fractional (or Z_k-graded) supersymmetric oscillator for which the fra…
An integrated coherent matter wave circuit is a single device, analogous to an integrated optical circuit, in which coherent de Broglie waves are created and then launched into waveguides where they can be switched, divided, recombined, and detected as they propagate. Applications of such circuits include guided atom interferometers, atomtronic circuits, and precisely controlled delivery of atoms. Here we report experiments demonstrating integrated circuits for guided coherent matter waves. The circuit elements are created with the painted potential technique, a form of time-averaged optical d…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce several basic theorems of coherent states and generalized coherent states based on Lie algebras su(2) and su(1,1), and to give some applications of them to quantum information theory for graduate students or non--experts who are interested in both Geometry and Quantum Information Theory. In the first half we make a general review of coherent states and generalized coherent states based on Lie algebras su(2) and su(1,1) from the geometric point of view and, in particular, prove that each resolution of unity can be obtained by the curvature form of some …
In the first half we make a short review of coherent states and generalized coherent ones based on Lie algebras su(2) and su(1,1), and the Schwinger's boson method to construct representations of the Lie algebras. In the second half we make a review of recent developments on both swap of coherent states and cloning of coherent states which are important subjects in Quantum Information Theory.
Lorentz symmetry is one of the cornerstone of both general relativity and the standard model of particle physics. We study the violation of Lorentz symmetry in some basic phenomena in atomic physics. Using the Green's function, and the source 4-current, the differential equation of 4-vector of electromagnetic potential is solved and the modified coulomb potential is obtained by some researchers. Using modified Coulomb potential, we find the corrections due to LIV on the spectrum of Hydrogen and Helium atoms. We also investigate the consequences of LIV on Stark, Zeeman and Spin orbit effects an…
We introduce to this paper new kinds of coherent states for some quantum solvable models: a free particle on a sphere, one-dimensional Calogero-Sutherland model, the motion of spinless electrons subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field B, respectively, in two dimensional flat surface and an infinite flat band. We explain how these states come directly from the generating functions of the certain families of classical orthogonal polynomials without the complexity of the algebraic approaches. We have shown that some examples become consistent with the Klauder- Perelomove and the Barut-Girarde…
First we make a brief review of coherent states and prove that the resolution of unity can be obtained by the 1-st Chern character of some bundle. Next we define a Grassmann manifold for a set of coherent states and construct the pull-back bundle making use of a projector from the parameter space to this Grassmann manifold. We study some geometric properties (Chern-characters mainly) of these bundles. Although the calculations of Chern-characters are in general not easy, we can perform them for the special cases. In this paper we report our calculations and propose some interesting problems to…
These are the lecture notes of guest lectures for Artur Ekert's course Introduction to Quantum Information at the Mathematical Institute of Oxford University, Hilary Term 2023. Some basic familiarity with Dirac notation is assumed. For the readers of Quantum in Pictures (QiP) who have some basic quantum background, these notes also constitute the shortest path to an explanation of how what they learn in QIP relates to the traditional quantum formalism.
In the spirit of some earlier work on the construction of vector coherent states over matrix domains, we compute here such states associated to some physical Hamiltonians. In particular, we construct vector coherent states of the Gazeau-Klauder type. As a related problem, we also suggest a way to handle degeneracies in the Hamiltonian for building coherent states. Specific physical Hamiltonians studied include a single photon mode interacting with a pair of fermions, a Hamiltonian involving a single boson and a single fermion, a charged particle in a three dimensional harmonic force field and …
This is a continuation of the preceding paper (hep-ph/0108219). First of all we make a brief review of generalized coherent states based on Lie algebra su(1,1) and prove that the resolution of unity can be obtained by the curvature form of some bundle. Next for a set of generalized coherent states we define a universal bundle over the infinite-dimensional Grassmann manifold and construct the pull-back bundle making use of a projector from the parameter space to this Grassmann one. We mainly study Chern characters of these bundles. Although the Chern characters in the infinite-dimensional case …
