We review the quantum adiabatic approximation for closed systems, and its recently introduced generalization to open systems (M.S. Sarandy and D.A. Lidar, e-print quant-ph/0404147). We also critically examine a recent argument claiming that there is an inconsistency in the adiabatic theorem for closed quantum systems [K.P. Marzlin and B.C. Sanders, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160408 (2004)] and point out how an incorrect manipulation of the adiabatic theorem may lead one to obtain such an inconsistent result.
The recent discovery of inconsistency (MS inconsistency) in the adiabatic approximation is discussed. In particular, the so-called, inconsistency in Berry phase is analyzed. On the contrary to some authors, we found that the MS inconsistency persisted and the so-called inconsistency in Berry phase does not exist.
We show that in a quantum adiabatic evolution, even though the adiabatic approximation is valid, the total phase of the final state indicated by the adiabatic theorem may evidently differ from the actual total phase. This invalidates the application of the linearity and the adiabatic approximation simultaneously. Besides, based on this observation we point out the mistake in the traditional proof for the adiabatic theorem. This mistake is the root of the troubles that the adiabatic theorem has met. The adiabatic theorem provides the basis for the adiabatic model of quantum computation. Recently the conditions required for the adiabatic theorem to hold have become a subject of some controversy. Here we show that the reported violations of the adiabatic theorem all arise from resonant transitions between energy levels. In the absence of fast driven oscillations the traditional adiabatic theorem holds. Implications for adiabatic quantum computation is discussed.
The consistency of quantum adiabatic theorem has been doubted recently. It is shown in the present paper that the difference between the adiabatic solution and the exact solution to the Schrodinger equation with a slowly changing driving Hamiltonian is small; while the difference between their time derivatives is not small. This explains why substituting the adiabatic solution back into Schrodinger equation leads to "inconsisitency" of the adiabatic theorem. We present a simple and pedagogical derivation of the quantum adiabatic theorem for two level systems (a single qubit) based on geometrical structures of quantum mechanics developed by Anandan and Aharonov, among others. We have chosen to use only the minimum geometric structure needed for an understanding of the adiabatic theorem for this case.
In this paper, we note that there are two different types of inconsistencies of quantum adiabatic theorem in work of K. P. Marzlin and B. C. Sanders [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160408, 2004], MS inconsistency and MS counterexample. Nevertheless, these two types are often confused as one by many authors. We shall point out that the inconsistencies of quantum adiabatic theorem raised by the relevant references just can be classified as these two types.
In this paper,we present a rigorous demonstration and discussion of the quantum adiabatic theorem for systems having a non degenerate continuous spectrum. A new strategy is initiated by defining a kind of gap, "a virtual gap", for the continuous spectrum through the notion of eigendifferential (Weyl's packet) and using the differential projector operator. Finally we obtain the validity condition of the adiabatic approximation.

The quantum adiabatic theorem states that if a quantum system starts in an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, and this Hamiltonian varies sufficiently slowly, the system stays in this eigenstate. We investigate experimentally the conditions that must be fulfilled for this theorem to hold. We show that the traditional adiabatic condition as well as some conditions that were recently suggested are either not sufficient or not necessary. Experimental evidence is presented by a simple experiment using nuclear spins.
Adiabatic passage employs a slowly varying time-dependent Hamiltonian to control the evolution of a quantum system along the Hamiltonian eigenstates. For processes of finite duration, the exact time evolving state may deviate from the adiabatic eigenstate at intermediate times, but in numerous applications it is observed that this deviation reaches a maximum and then decreases significantly towards the end of the process. The adiabatic theorem states that an initial eigenstate of a slowly varying Hamiltonian remains close to an instantaneous eigenstate of the Hamiltonian at a later time. We show that a perfunctory application of this statement is problematic if the change in eigenstate is significant, regardless of how closely the evolution satisfies the requirements of the adiabatic theorem. We also introduce an example of a two-level system with an exactly solvable evolution to demonstrate the inapplicability of the adiabatic approximation for a particular slowly varying Hamiltonian.
The unitary operator corresponding to the classical canonical transformation that connects a general closed system to an open system under adiabatic conditions is found. The quantum invariant operator of the adiabatic open system is derived from the unitary transformation of the quantum Hamiltonian of the closed system. We show that a noncyclic phase of geometric origin has to be included in the approximate adiabatic wave function. The adiabatic noncyclic geometric phase for systems exhibiting a conical intersection as well as for an Aharonov-Bohm situation is worked out in detail. A spin-1/2 experiment to measure the adiabatic noncyclic geometric phase is discussed. We also analyze some misconceptions in the literature and textbooks concerning noncyclic geometric phases.
We show that the adiabatic approximation for nonselfadjoint hamiltonians seems to induce two non-equal expressions for the geometric phase. The first one is related to the spectral projector involved in the adiabatic theorem, the other one is the adiabatic limit of the nonadiabatic geometric phase. This apparent inconsistency is resolved by observing that the difference between the two expressions is compensated by a small deviation in the dynamical phases.
We present a new theorem describing stable solutions for a driven quantum system. The theorem, coined `inertial theorem', is applicable for fast driving, provided the acceleration rate is small. The theorem states that in the inertial limit eigenoperators of the propagator remain invariant throughout the dynamics, accumulating dynamical and geometric phases. We provide rigorous bounds for the error of the adiabatic approximation of quantum mechanics under four sources of experimental error: perturbations in the initial condition, systematic time-dependent perturbations in the Hamiltonian, coupling to low-energy quantum systems, and decoherent time-dependent perturbations in the Hamiltonian. For decoherent perturbations, we find both upper and lower bounds on the evolution time to guarantee the adiabatic approximation performs within a prescribed tolerance. We prove the existence of a unitary transformation that enables two arbitrarily given Hamiltonians in the same Hilbert space to be transformed into one another. The result is straightforward yet, for example, it lays the foundation to implementing or mimicking dynamics with the most controllable Hamiltonian. As a promising application, this existence theorem allows for a rapidly evolving realization of adiabatic quantum computation by transforming a Hamiltonian where dynamics is in the adiabatic regime into a rapidly evolving one. We illustrate the theorem with examples.
A discretized version of the adiabatic theorem is described with the help of a rule relating a Hermitian operator to its expectation value and variance. The simple initial operator X with known ground state is transformed in a series of N small steps into a more complicated final operator Z with unknown ground state. We present an analysis of the adiabatic approximation to understand when it applies, in view of the recent criticisms and studies for the validity of the adiabatic theorem. We point out that this approximation is just the leading order of a perturbation series, that holds in a regime of a perturbation going to infinity, and so the conditions for its validity can be only obtained going to higher orders in the expansion and removing secular terms, that is terms that runs to infinity as the time increases. In this way, it is always possible to get the exact criteria for the approximation to hold.
We introduce an approach to scattering problems in theories with non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, usually known as PT-symmetric quantum theories, by means of the adiabatic switching of the interaction. The modifications of usual methods needed to employ time-dependent metrics are described. We argue that an analogue of the adiabatic theorem hold for time dependent metrics and that its validity forms a necessary condition for consistency of the procedure.
Marzlin and Sanders \cite{marzlin} have shown rigorously that the adiabatic approximation can be very inaccurate when applied to a Hamiltonian $H(t)$ that generates the evolution $U^{\dagger} (t)$ even if it gives an excellent approximation to the evolution $U(t)$ generated by a dual Hamiltonian $h(t)$. We show that this is not inconsistent with the adiabatic theorem and find that in general even if $h(t)$ satisfies the conditions of the adiabatic theorem, $H(t)$ will likely violate those conditions.

The information for the feedback is gained from non-disturbating measurements done on an ensemble of identical non-interacting systems. This allows us to improve approximations to a perturbed dynamics, beyond the standard approximation based on quantum Zeno dynamics and adiabatic elimination. We analyze the production of entropy along non-equilibrium processes in quantum systems coupled to generic environments. First, we show that the entropy production due to final measurements and the loss of correlations obeys a fluctuation theorem in detailed and integral forms. Second, we discuss the decomposition of the entropy production into two positive contributions, adiabatic and non-adiabatic, based on the existence of invariant states of the local dynamics. The theorem applies to systems that have resonances instead of bound states, and to systems for which just an approximation to a bound state is known. To demonstrate the theorem's usefulness in a concrete situation, we apply it to shape resonances.

We prove the adiabatic theorem for quantum evolution without the traditional gap condition. All that this adiabatic theorem needs is a (piecewise) twice differentiable finite dimensional spectral projection. The result implies that the adiabatic theorem holds for the ground state of atoms in quantized radiation field. The general result we prove gives no information on the rate at which the adiabatic limit is approached. With additional spectral information one can also estimate this rate.
Quantum adiabatic evolution is a dynamical evolution of a quantum system under slow external driving. According to the quantum adiabatic theorem, no transitions occur between non-degenerate instantaneous eigen-energy levels in such a dynamical evolution. A general quantum adiabatic theorem with and without the time-dependent orthogonalization is proven, which can be applied to understand the origin of activation energies in chemical reactions. Further proofs are also developed for the oscillating Schwinger Hamiltonian to establish the relationship between the internal (due to time-dependent eigenfunctions) and external (due to time-dependent Hamiltonian) time scales. We derive a nearly optimal upper bound on the running time in the adiabatic theorem for a switching family of Hamiltonians. We assume the switching Hamiltonian is in the Gevrey class $G^α$ as a function of time, and we show that the error in adiabatic approximation remains small for running times of order $g^{-2}\,|\ln\,g\,|^{6α}$. Here $g$ denotes the minimal spectral gap between the eigenvalue(s) of interest and the rest of the spectrum of the instantaneous Hamiltonian.

We present generalized adiabatic theorems for closed and open quantum systems that can be applied to slow modulations of rapidly varying fields, such as oscillatory fields that occur in optical experiments and light induced processes. The generalized adiabatic theorems show that a sufficiently slow modulation conserves the dynamical modes of time dependent reference Hamiltonians. In the limiting case of modulations of static fields, the standard adiabatic theorems are recovered. In this work, we examine the validity of quantum adiabatic theorem in thermodynamic systems. For a $d$-dimensional quantum many-body system, we show that the duration time $τ_0$ required by its ground-state adiabatic process does not depend on the microscopic details, but the scaling dimension of the fidelity susceptibility $d_a$. Our result, therefore, provides a quantitative time scale of the quantum adiabatic theorem in thermodynamic systems. We generalize Kato's adiabatic theorem to nonunitary dynamics with an isospectral generator. This enables us to unify two strong-coupling limits: one driven by fast oscillations under a Hamiltonian, and the other driven by strong damping under a Lindbladian. We discuss the case where both mechanisms are present and provide nonperturbative error bounds. We also analyze the links with the quantum Zeno effect and dynamics.
Conditions for the validity of the quantum adiabatic approximation are analyzed. For the case of linear Hamiltonians, a simple and general sufficient condition is derived, which is valid for arbitrary spectra and any kind of time variation. It is shown that in some cases the found condition is necessary and sufficient. The adiabatic theorem is generalized for the case of nonlinear Hamiltonians.
According to the quantum adiabatic theorem, we can in principle obtain a true vacuum of a quantum system starting from a trivial vacuum of a simple Hamiltonian. In actual adiabatic digital quantum simulation with finite time length and non-infinitesimal time steps, we can only obtain an approximate vacuum that is supposed to be a superposition of a true vacuum and excited states. We propose a procedure to improve the approximate vacuum.
High-fidelity Bragg pulses are an indispensable tool for state-of-the-art atom interferometry experiments. In this paper, we introduce an analytic theory for such pulses. Our theory is based on the pivotal insight that the physics of Bragg pulses can be accurately described by the adiabatic theorem. We show that efficient Bragg diffraction is possible with any smooth and adiabatic pulse shape and that high-fidelity Gaussian pulses are exclusively adiabatic. We also reexamine the inconsistency issue raised by Marzlin and Sanders (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160408, 2004) and elucidate the underlying cause.
We prove an adiabatic theorem for the evolution of spectral data under a weak additive perturbation in the context of a system without an intrinsic time scale. For continuous functions of the unperturbed Hamiltonian the convergence is in norm while for a larger class functions, including the spectral projections associated to embedded eigenvalues, the convergence is in the strong operator topology.
