We demonstrate the connection between an operator's matrix element distribution and entangling power via numerical simulations of random, pseudo-random, and quantum chaotic operators. Creating operators with a random distribution of matrix elements is more difficult than creating operators that reproduce other statistical properties of random matrices. Thus, operators that fulfill many random matrix statistical properties may not generate states of high multi-partite entanglement. To quantify the randomness of various statistical distributions and, by extension, entangling power, we use properties of interpolating ensembles that transition between integrable and random matrix ensembles.
A simple experiment using radioactive decay is proposed to test the possibility of a determinsistic, but chaotic, origin of quantum mechanical randomness.
According to quantum theory, the outcomes obtained by measuring an entangled state necessarily exhibit some randomness if they violate a Bell inequality. In particular, a maximal violation of the CHSH inequality guarantees that 1.23 bits of randomness are generated by the measurements. However, by performing measurements with binary outcomes on two subsystems one could in principle generate up to two bits of randomness. We show that correlations that violate arbitrarily little the CHSH inequality or states with arbitrarily little entanglement can be used to certify that close to the maximum of…
Quantum chaos is presented as a paradigm of information processing by dynamical systems at the bottom of the range of phase-space scales. Starting with a brief review of classical chaos as entropy flow from micro- to macro-scales, I argue that quantum chaos came as an indispensable rectification, removing inconsistencies related to entropy in classical chaos: Bottom-up information currents require an inexhaustible entropy production and a diverging information density in phase space, reminiscent of Gibbs' paradox in Statistical Mechanics. It is shown how a mere discretization of the state spac…
Detection of entanglement in quantum networks consisting of many parties is one of the important steps towards building quantum communication and computation networks. We consider a scenario where the measurement devices used for this certification are uncharacterised. In this case, it is well known that by using quantum states as inputs for the measurement devices it is possible to detect any entangled state (a situation known as measurement device-independent entanglement witnessing). Here we go beyond entanglement detection and provide methods to estimate the amount of entanglement in a qua…
Quantum entanglement between two or more bipartite entities is a core concept in quantum information areas limited to microscopic regimes directly governed by Heisenberg uncertainty principle via quantum superposition, resulting in nondeterministic and probabilistic quantum features. Such quantum features cannot be generated by classical means. Here, a pure classical method of on-demand entangled light-pair generation is presented in a macroscopic regime via basis randomness. This conflicting idea of conventional quantum mechanics invokes a fundamental question about both classicality and quan…
We show that in device independent quantum key distribution protocols the privacy of randomness is of crucial importance. For sublinear test sample sizes even the slightest guessing probability by an eavesdropper will completely compromise security. We show that a combined attack exploiting test sample and measurement choices compromises the security even with a linear size test sample and otherwise device independent security considerations. We explicitly derive the sample size needed to retrieve security as a function of the randomness quality. We demonstrate that exploiting features of genu…
Entanglement is not only the most intriguing feature of quantum mechanics, but also a key resource in quantum information science. The entanglement content of random pure quantum states is almost maximal; such states find applications in various quantum information protocols. The preparation of a random state or, equivalently, the implementation of a random unitary operator, requires a number of elementary one- and two-qubit gates that is exponential in the number n_q of qubits, thus becoming rapidly unfeasible when increasing n_q. On the other hand, pseudo-random states approximating to the d…
Recently [Cavalcanti \textit{et al.} Nat Commun \textbf{6}, 7941 (2015)] proposed a method to certify the presence of entanglement in asymmetric networks, where some users do not have control over the measurements they are performing. Such asymmetry naturally emerges in realistic situtations, such as in cryptographic protocols over quantum networks. Here we implement such "semi-device independent" techniques to experimentally witness all types of entanglement on a three-qubit photonic W state. Furthermore we analise the amount of genuine randomness that can be certified in this scenario from a…

We use a Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain to investigate how chaos and localization may affect the entanglement of pairs of qubits. To measure how much entangled a pair is, we compute its concurrence, which is then analyzed in the delocalized/localized and in the chaotic/non-chaotic regimes. Our results indicate that chaos reduces entanglement and that entanglement decreases in the region of strong localization. In the transition region from a chaotic to a non-chaotic regime localization increases entanglement. We also show that entanglement is larger for strongly interacting qubits (nearest neighbor…
We study quantum chaos for systems with more than one degree of freedom, for which we present an analysis of the dynamics of entanglement. Our analysis explains the main features of entanglement dynamics and identifies entanglement-based signatures of quantum chaos. We discuss entanglement dynamics for a feasible experiment involving an atom in a magneto-optical trap and compare the results with entanglement dynamics for the well-studied quantum kicked top.
Dynamical formation of entanglement is studied for quantum chaotic bi-particle systems. We find that statistical properties of the Schmidt eigenvalues for strong chaos are well described by the random matrix theory of the Laguerre ensemble. This implies that entanglement formation for quantum chaos has universal properties, and does not depend on specific aspects of the systems.
The entanglement entropy of the two-dimensional random transverse Ising model is studied with a numerical implementation of the strong disorder renormalization group. The asymptotic behavior of the entropy per surface area diverges at, and only at, the quantum phase transition that is governed by an infinite randomness fixed point. Here we identify a double-logarithmic multiplicative correction to the area law for the entanglement entropy. This contrasts with the pure area law valid at the infinite randomness fixed point in the diluted transverse Ising model in higher dimensions.
We explore the dynamics of entanglement in classically chaotic systems by considering a multiqubit system that behaves collectively as a spin system obeying the dynamics of the quantum kicked top. In the classical limit, the kicked top exhibits both regular and chaotic dynamics depending on the strength of the chaoticity parameter $κ$ in the Hamiltonian. We show that the entanglement of the multiqubit system, considered for both bipartite and pairwise entanglement, yields a signature of quantum chaos. Whereas bipartite entanglement is enhanced in the chaotic region, pairwise entanglement is su…
Quantum information processing shows advantages in many tasks, including quantum communication and computation, comparing to its classical counterpart. The essence of quantum processing lies on the fundamental difference between classical and quantum states. For a physical system, the coherent superposition on a computational basis is different from the statistical mixture of states in the same basis. Such coherent superposition endows the possibility of generating true random numbers, realizing parallel computing, and other classically impossible tasks such as quantum Bernoulli factory. Consi…
Paper I of this series introduced a nonlinear version of quantum mechanics that blocks cats, and paper II postulated a random part of the wavefunction to explain outcomes in experiments such as Stern-Gerlach or EPRB. However, an ad hoc extra parameter was assumed for the randomness. Here I provide some analytic and simulation evidence that the nonlinear theory exhibits sensitive dependence on initial conditions in measurement scenarios, perhaps implying that the magnitude of randomness required is determined by structural features of the model, and does not require a free parameter.
We analyze the interplay of chaos, entanglement and decoherence in a system of qubits whose collective behaviour is that of a quantum kicked top. The dynamical entanglement between a single qubit and the rest can be calculated from the mean of the collective spin operators. This allows the possibility of efficiently measuring entanglement dynamics in an experimental setting. We consider a deeply quantum regime and show that signatures of chaos are present in the dynamical entanglement for parameters accessible in an experiment that we propose using cold atoms. The evolution of the entanglement…
We present a method to calculate an upper bound on the generation of entanglement in any spin system using the Fannes-Audenaert inequality for the von Neumann entropy. Our method not only is useful for efficiently estimating entanglement, but also shows that entanglement generation depends on the distance of the quantum states of the system from corresponding minimum-uncertainty spin coherent states (SCSs). We illustrate our method using a quantum kicked top model, and show that our upper bound is a very good estimator for entanglement generated in both regular and chaotic regions. In a deep q…
A quantum random number generator (QRNG) generates genuine randomness from the intrinsic probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics. The central problems for most QRNGs are estimating the entropy of the genuine randomness and producing such randomness at high rates. Here we propose and demonstrate a proof-of-concept QRNG that operates at a high rate of 24 Mbit/s by means of a high-dimensional entanglement system, in which the user monitors the entropy in real time via the observation of a nonlocal quantum interference, without a detailed characterization of the devices. Our work provides an imp…
We prove that as conjectured by Ac\'ın et al. [Phys. Rev. A 93, 040102(R) (2016)], two bits of randomness can be certified in a device-independent way from one bit of entanglement using the maximal quantum violation of Gisin's elegant Bell inequality. This suggests a surprising connection between maximal entanglement, complete sets of mutually unbiased bases, and elements of symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures, on one side, and the optimal way of certifying maximal randomness, on the other.
We demonstrate that generalized entanglement [Barnum {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 032308 (2003)] provides a natural and reliable indicator of quantum chaotic behavior. Since generalized entanglement depends directly on a choice of preferred observables, exploring how generalized entanglement increases under dynamical evolution is possible without invoking an auxiliary coupled system or decomposing the system into arbitrary subsystems. We find that, in the chaotic regime, the long-time saturation value of generalized entanglement agrees with random matrix theory predictions. For our sys…
Multi-party local quantum operations with shared quantum entanglement or shared classical randomness are studied. The following facts are established: (i) There is a ball of local operations with shared randomness lying within the space spanned by the no-signaling operations and centred at the completely noisy channel. (ii) The existence of the ball of local operations with shared randomness is employed to prove that the weak membership problem for local operations with shared entanglement is strongly NP-hard. (iii) Local operations with shared entanglement are characterized in terms of linear…
The study of local models using finite shared randomness originates from the consideration about the cost of classically simulating entanglement in composite quantum systems. We construct explicitly two families of local-hidden-state (LHS) models for T-states, by mapping the problem to the Werner state. The continuous decreasing of shared randomness along with entanglement, as the anisotropy increases, can be observed in the one from the most economical model for the Werner state. The construction of the one for separable states shows that the separable boundary of T-states can be generated fr…
We report a novel quantum random number generator based on the photon-number$-$path entangled state which is prepared via two-photon quantum interference at a beam splitter. The randomness in our scheme is of truly quantum mechanical origin as it comes from the projection measurement of the entangled two-photon state. The generated bit sequences satisfy the standard randomness test.
Nonlocal correlations are useful for device independent (DI) randomness certification [Nature (London) {\bf 464}, 1021 (2010)]. The advantage of this DI protocol over the conventional quantum protocol is that randomness can be certified even when experimental apparatuses are not trusted. Quantum entanglement is the necessary physical source for the nonlocal correlation required for such DI task. However, nonlocality and entanglement are distinct concepts. There exist entangled states which produce no nonlocal correlation and hence are not useful for the DI randomness certification task. Here w…
We investigate entanglement between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom for a model nonadiabatic system. We find that entanglement (measured by the von Neumann entropy of the subsystem for the eigenstates) is large in a statistical sense when the system shows ``nonadiabatic chaos'' behavior which was found in our previous work [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 63}, 066221 (2001)]. We also discuss non-statistical behavior of the eigenstates for the regular cases.
We study the entanglement generation of operators whose statistical properties approach those of random matrices but are restricted in some way. These include interpolating ensemble matrices, where the interval of the independent random parameters are restricted, pseudo-random operators, where there are far fewer random parameters than required for random matrices, and quantum chaotic evolution. Restricting randomness in different ways allows us to probe connections between entanglement and randomness. We comment on which properties affect entanglement generation and discuss ways of efficientl…
We comment on the investigation of the connection between chaos and dynamically generated entanglement in Phys. Rev. E, \textbf{83}, 016207, (2011). While, in the referred paper, the authors give an explicit example of a state initially localized in the regular region and still has entanglement properties similar to the states localized in the chaotic region, a few clarifications related to previous works are in order. Firstly, it is crucial to point out that such a behavior can occur for states initially localized near the border between the chaotic region and regular island, which seems to b…
We study entanglement entropy (EE) as a signature of quantum chaos in ergodic and non-ergodic systems. In particular we look at the quantum kicked top and kicked rotor as multi-qubit systems, and investigate the single qubit EE which characterizes bipartite entanglement of this qubit with the rest of the system. We study the correspondence of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of the classical kicked systems with the EE of their quantum counterparts. We find that EE is a signature of global chaos in ergodic systems, and local chaos in non-ergodic systems. In particular, we show that EE can be maximi…
A Rydberg molecule is composed of an outer electron that collides on the residual ionic core. Typical states of Rydberg molecules display entanglement between the outer electron and the core. In this work we quantify the average entanglement of molecular eigenstates and further investigate the time evolution of entanglement production from initially unentangled states. The results are contrasted with the underlying classical dynamics, obtained from the semiclassical limit of the core-electron collision. Our findings indicate that entanglement is not simply correlated with the degree of classic…
We study time evolution of entanglement between two qubits, which are part of a larger system, after starting from a random initial product state. We show that, due to randomness in the initial product state, entanglement is present only between directly coupled qubits and only for short times. Time dependence of the entanglement appears essentially independent of the specific hamiltonian used for time evolution and is well reproduced by a parameter-free two-body random matrix model.
We study the particle-entanglement dynamics witnessed by the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate governed by the kicked rotor Hamiltonian. The dynamics is investigated with a beyond mean-field approach. We link the time scales of the validity of this approximation in, both, classical regular and chaotic regions, with the maximum Lyapunov exponents of the classical system. This establishes an effective connection between the classical chaos and the QFI. We finally study the critical point of a quantum phase transition using the beyond mean-field approximation …
We study the dynamical generation of entanglement as a signature of chaos in a system of periodically kicked coupled-tops, where chaos and entanglement arise from the same physical mechanism. The long-time averaged entanglement as a function of the position of an initially localized wave packet very closely correlates with the classical phase space surface of section -- it is nearly uniform in the chaotic sea, and reproduces the detailed structure of the regular islands. The uniform value in the chaotic sea is explained by the random state conjecture. As classically chaotic dynamics take local…
We consider several models of 1-round classical and quantum communication, some of these models have not been defined before. We "almost separate" the models of simultaneous quantum message passing with shared entanglement and the model of simultaneous quantum message passing with shared randomness. We define a relation which can be efficiently exactly solved in the first model but cannot be solved efficiently, either exactly or in 0-error setup in the second model. In fact, our relation is exactly solvable even in a more restricted model of simultaneous classical message passing with shared e…
The standard kicked top involves a periodically kicked angular momentum. By considering this angular momentum as a collection of entangled spins, we compute the bipartite entanglement dynamics as a function of the dynamics of the classical counterpart. Our numerical results indicate that the entanglement of the quantum top depends on the specific details of the dynamics of the classical top rather than depending universally on the global properties of the classical regime. These results are grounded on linking the entanglement rate to averages involving the classical angular momentum, thereby …

We investigate how the dynamical production of quantum entanglement for weakly coupled, composite quantum systems is influenced by the chaotic dynamics of the corresponding classical system, using coupled kicked tops. The linear entropy for the subsystem (a kicked top) is employed as a measure of entanglement. A perturbative formula for the entanglement production rate is derived. The formula contains a correlation function that can be evaluated only from the information of uncoupled tops. Using this expression and the assumption that the correlation function decays exponentially which is plau…
The generation of series of random numbers is an important and difficult problem. Appropriate measurements on entangled states have been proposed as the definitive solution, based on the impossibility of exploiting quantum non locality to get faster than light signaling. There is a controversy regarding what is preferable to produce series with utilizable randomness in practice, high or low entanglement. We prepare biphotons with three different levels of entanglement, easy entangled, marginally entangled and no entangled. Randomness is evaluated, independently of the quantum non locality argu…
We calculate the atomic (spin) Wigner function for the single mode Dicke model in the regime of large number of two-level atoms. The dynamics of this quasi-probability function on the Bloch sphere allows us to visualize the consequences of the entanglement process between the boson and the spin subsystems. Such investigation shows a distinct localization behavior of the spin state with respect to the polar and azimuthal Bloch sphere angles. A complete {\em breakdown of reflection symmetry} in the azimuthal angle is shown in the non-integrable case, even at short evolution times. Also, in the c…
Scrambling is a process by which the state of a quantum system is effectively randomized due to the global entanglement that "hides" initially localized quantum information. In this work, we lay the mathematical foundations of studying randomness complexities beyond scrambling by entanglement properties. We do so by analyzing the generalized (in particular Rényi) entanglement entropies of designs, i.e. ensembles of unitary channels or pure states that mimic the uniformly random distribution (given by the Haar measure) up to certain moments. A main collective conclusion is that the Rényi entang…
The dynamics of entangled state interacting with a single cavity mode is investigated in the presence of a random parameter. We have shown that degree of entanglement decays with time and rate of decay is defined by features of random parameter. Quantum teleportation through dissipative channal and teleportation fidelity as a function of damping rates has been studied. The sensitivity of the fidelity with respect to random parameter is discussed. We have evaluated the time interval during which one can perform the quantum teleportation and send the information with reasonable fidelity, for a g…
While classical chaos has been successfully characterized with consistent theories and intuitive techniques, such as with the use of Lyapunov exponents, quantum chaos is still poorly understood, as well as its relation with multi-partite entanglement and information scrambling. We consider a benchmark system, the kicked top model, which displays chaotic behaviour in the classical version, and proceed to characterize the quantum case with a thorough diagnosis of the growth of chaos and entanglement in time. As a novel tool for the characterization of quantum chaos, we introduce for this scope t…
Quantum chaos is a subject whose major goal is to identify and to investigate different quantum signatures of classical chaos. Here we study entanglement production in coupled chaotic systems as a possible quantum indicator of classical chaos. We use coupled kicked tops as a model for our extensive numerical studies. We find that, in general, presence of chaos in the system produces more entanglement. However, coupling strength between two subsystems is also very important parameter for the entanglement production. Here we show how chaos can lead to large entanglement which is universal and de…
Coherently manipulating multipartite quantum correlations leads to remarkable advantages in quantum information processing. A fundamental question is whether such quantum advantages persist only by exploiting multipartite correlations, such as entanglement. Recently, Dale, Jennings, and Rudolph negated the question by showing that a randomness processing, quantum Bernoulli factory, using quantum coherence, is strictly more powerful than the one with classical mechanics. In this Letter, focusing on the same scenario, we propose a theoretical protocol that is classically impossible but can be im…
Using recent results in the field of quantum chaos we derive explicit expressions for the time scale of decoherence induced by the system-environment entanglement. For a generic system-environment interaction and for a generic quantum chaotic system as environment, conditions are derived for energy eigenstates to be preferred states in the weak coupling regime. A simple model is introduced to numerically confirm our predictions. The results presented here may also help understanding the dynamics of quantum entanglement generation in chaotic quantum systems.
