We study dynamical properties of systems with many interacting Fermi-particles under the influence of static imperfections. Main attention is payed to the time dependence of the Shannon entropy of wave packets, and to the fidelity of the dynamics. Our question is how the entropy and fidelity are sensitive to the noise. In our study, we use both random matrix models with two-body interaction and dynamical models of a quantum computation. Numerical data are compared with analytical predictions.
For an extended Harper model, the fidelity for two lowest band edge states corresponding to different model parameters, the fidelity susceptibility and the von Neumann entropy of the lowest band edge states, and the spectrum-averaged von Neumann entropy are studied numerically, respectively. The fidelity is near one when parameters are in the same phase or same phase boundary; otherwise it is close to zero. There are drastic changes in fidelity when one parameter is at phase boundaries. For fidelity susceptibility the finite scaling analysis performed, the critical exponents $α$, $β$, and $ν$ …
Resonance states of a two-electron quantum dot are studied using a variational expansion with both real basis-set functions and complex scaling methods. The two-electron entanglement (linear entropy) is calculated as a function of the electron repulsion at both sides of the critical value, where the ground (bound) state becomes a resonance (unbound) state. The linear entropy and fidelity and double orthogonality functions are compared as methods for the determination of the real part of the energy of a resonance. The complex linear entropy of a resonance state is introduced using complex scali…
We present a numerical study of a quantum phase transition from a spin-polarized to a topologically ordered phase in a system of spin-1/2 particles on a torus. We demonstrate that this non-symmetry-breaking topological quantum phase transition (TOQPT) is of second order. The transition is analyzed via the ground state energy and fidelity, block entanglement, Wilson loops, and the recently proposed topological entropy. Only the topological entropy distinguishes the TOQPT from a standard QPT, and remarkably, does so already for small system sizes. Thus the topological entropy serves as a proper …
We study the reduced fidelity susceptibility $χ_{r}$ for an $M$-body subsystem of an $N$-body Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model with $τ=M/N$ fixed. The reduced fidelity susceptibility can be viewed as the response of subsystem to a certain parameter. In noncritical region, the inner correlation of the system is weak, and $χ_{r}$ behaves similar with the global fidelity susceptibility $χ_{g}$, the ratio $η=χ_{r}/χ_{g}$ depends on $τ$ but not $N$. However, at the critical point, the inner correlation tends to be divergent, then we find $χ_{r}$ approaches $χ_{g}$ with the increasing the $N$, and $η=1$ i…
The fidelity susceptibility and entanglement entropy in a system of two-leg $XXZ$ spin ladder with rung coupling is investigated by using exact diagonalization of the system. The effects of rung coupling on fidelity susceptibility, entanglement entropy and quantum phase transition are analyzed. It is found that the quantum phase transition between two different $XY$ phases can be well characterized by the fidelity susceptibility. Though the quantum phase transition from $XY$ phase to rung singlet phase can be hardly detected by fidelity susceptibility, it can be predicted by the first derivati…
We formulate an algorithm to lower bound the fidelity between quantum many-body states only from partial information, such as the one accessible by few-body observables. Our method is especially tailored to permutationally invariant states, but it gives nontrivial results in all situations where this symmetry is even partial. This property makes it particularly useful for experiments with atomic ensembles, where relevant many-body states can be certified from collective measurements. As an example, we show that a $ξ^2\approx-6\;\text{dB}$ spin squeezed state of $N=100$ particles can be certifi…
Fidelity and relative entropy are two significant quantities in quantum information theory. We study the quantum fidelity and relative entropy under unitary orbits. The maximal and minimal quantum fidelity and relative entropy between two unitary orbits are explicitly derived. The potential applications in quantum computation and information processing are discussed.
The fidelity and entanglement entropy in an antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain are investigated by using the method of density-matrix renormalization-group. The effect of anisotropy on fidelity and entanglement entropy are investigated. The relations between fidelity, entanglement entropy and quantum phase transition are analyzed. It is found that the quantum phase transition point can be well characterized by both the ground-state entropy and fidelity for large system.
We perform the fidelity analysis for Boltzmann-Gibbs-like states in order to investigate whether the topological order of 1D fermionic systems at zero temperature is maintained at finite temperatures. We use quantum walk protocols that are known to simulate topological phases and the respective quantum phase transitions for chiral symmetric Hamiltonians. Using the standard approaches of the fidelity analysis and the study of edge states, we conclude that no thermal-like phase transitions occur as temperature increases, i.e., the topological behaviour is washed out gradually. We also show that …
The fidelity and entropy in an easy-axis antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1 chain are studied numerically. By using the method of density-matrix renormalization group, the effects of anisotropy on fidelity and entanglement entropy are investigated. Their relations with quantum phase transition are analyzed. It is found that the quantum phase transition from the Haldane spin liquid to Néel spin solid can be well characterized by the fidelity. The phase transition can be hardly detected by the entropy but it can be successfully detected by the first deviation of the entropy.
We analyze the effect of spin degree of freedom on fidelity decay and entropy production of a many-particle fermionic(bosonic) system in a mean-field, quenched by a random two-body interaction preserving many-particle spin $S$. The system Hamiltonian is represented by embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (EGOE) of random matrices (for time-reversal and rotationally invariant systems) with one plus two-body interactions preserving $S$ for fermions/bosons. EGOE are paradigmatic models to study the dynamical transition from integrability to chaos in interacting many-body quantum systems. A simpl…
We demonstrate the efficiency of a recent exact-gradient optimal control methodology by applying it to a challenging many-body problem, crossing the superfluid to Mott-insulator phase transition in the Bose-Hubbard model. The system size necessitates a matrix product state representation and this seamlessly integrates with the requirements of the algorithm. We observe fidelities in the range 0.99-0.9999 with associated minimal process duration estimates displaying an exponential fidelity-duration trade-off across several orders of magnitude. The corresponding optimal solutions are characterize…
Fidelity is a fundamental and ubiquitous concept in quantum information theory. Fuchs-van de Graaf's inequalities deal with bounding fidelity from above and below. In this paper, we give a lower bound on the quantum fidelity between two states in terms of their trace-norm distance and their max-relative entropy.
We study the fidelity susceptibility in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 XXZ chain numerically. By using the density-matrix renormalization group method, the effects of the alternating single-site anisotropy $D$ on fidelity susceptibility are investigated. Its relation with the quantum phase transition is analyzed. It is found that the quantum phase transition from the Haldane spin liquid to periodic Néel spin solid can be well characterized by the fidelity. Finite size scaling of fidelity susceptibility shows a power-law divergence at criticality, which indicates the quantum phase transition is of…
The correlation diagram of the vibrational energy spectra associated with the stretching modes of triatomic molecules such as CO$_2$ and H$_2$O is analyzed by means of two interacting Morse oscillators. By considering a linear dependence of the structure and force constants ($x_g=g^o_{rr'}/g^o_{rr}, x_f=f_{rr'}/f_{rr}$) going from the water parameters to the carbon dioxide, it is shown that the fidelity, entropy and Poincaré sections detect the polyad breaking process manifested in the transition from local to normal mode behaviors. Additionally Poincaré sections show a transition to chaos whe…

We investigate the diagonal entropy(DE) of the ground state for quantum many-body systems, including the XY model and the Ising model with next nearest neighbour interactions. We focus on the DE of a subsystem of L continuous spins. We show that the DE in many-body systems, regardless of integrability, can be represented as a volume term plus a logarithmic correction and a constant offset. Quantum phase transition points can be explicitly identified by the three coefficients thereof. Besides, by combining entanglement entropy and the relative entropy of quantum coherence, as two celebrated rep…
We investigate a one-dimensional atomic lattice laser-driven to a Rydberg state, in which engineered dissipation channels lead to entanglement in the many-body system. In particular, we demonstrate the efficient generation of ground states of a frustration-free Hamiltonian, as well as $W$ states. We discuss the realization of the required coherent and dissipative terms, and we perform extensive numerical simulations characterizing the fidelity of the state preparation procedure. We identify the optimum parameters for high fidelity entanglement preparation and investigate the scaling with the s…
Quantum teleportation with a two-qubit state can be suitably characterized in terms of maximal fidelity and fidelity deviation, where the former is the maximal value of the average fidelity achievable within the standard protocol and local unitary operations and the latter is the standard deviation of fidelity over all input states. In this paper, we consider the problem of characterizing two-qubit states that are optimal for quantum teleportation for a given value of some state property. The optimal states are defined as those states that, for a given value of the state property under conside…
We analyze the fidelity of the generalized Pauli channels governed by memory kernel master equations. It is shown that, by appropriate engineering of parameters of the corresponding memory kernel, the quantum evolution with non-local noise can have higher fidelity than the corresponding purely Markovian evolution governed by the Markovian semigroup. Similar engineering can substantially influence the evolution of quantum entanglement, entropy, and quantum coherence.
Fidelity mechanics is formalized as a framework to investigate quantum critical phenomena in quantum many-body systems. This is achieved by introducing fidelity temperature to properly quantify quantum fluctuations, which, together with fidelity entropy and fidelity internal energy, constitute three basic state functions in fidelity mechanics, thus enabling us to formulate analogues of the four thermodynamic laws and Landauer's principle at zero temperature. Fidelity flows are defined and may be interpreted as an alternative form of renormalization group flows. Thus, both stable and unstable f…
We study the fidelity decay of the $k$-body embedded ensembles of random matrices for bosons distributed over two single-particle states. Fidelity is defined in terms of a reference Hamiltonian, which is a purely diagonal matrix consisting of a fixed one-body term and includes the diagonal of the perturbing $k$-body embedded ensemble matrix, and the perturbed Hamiltonian which includes the residual off-diagonal elements of the $k$-body interaction. This choice mimics the typical mean-field basis used in many calculations. We study separately the cases $k=2$ and $3$. We compute the ensemble-ave…
We study the properties of error correcting codes for noise models in the presence of asymmetries and/or correlations by means of the entanglement fidelity and the code entropy. First, we consider a dephasing Markovian memory channel and characterize the performance of both a repetition code and an error avoiding code in terms of the entanglement fidelity. We also consider the concatenation of such codes and show that it is especially advantageous in the regime of partial correlations. Finally, we characterize the effectiveness of the codes and their concatenation by means of the code entropy …
We study the fidelity decay in the $k$-body embedded ensembles of random matrices for bosons distributed in two single-particle states, considering the reference or unperturbed Hamiltonian as the one-body terms and the diagonal part of the $k$-body embedded ensemble of random matrices, and the perturbation as the residual off-diagonal part of the interaction. We calculate the ensemble-averaged fidelity with respect to an initial random state within linear response theory to second order on the perturbation strength, and demonstrate that it displays the freeze of the fidelity. During the freeze…
Review of the probability representation of quantum mechanics and the symplectic tomography approach are presented. The examples of Gaussian states of nanoelectric circuit, Josephson junction, and two interacting high-quality resonant circuits are considered. The Shannon entropy, quantum information, fidelity, and purity of quantum states in the tomographic representation of quantum mechanics are studied.
A correlated many-body calculation is presented to characterize the Shannon information entropy of trapped interacting bosons. We reformulate the one-body Shannon information entropy in terms of the one-body probability density. The minimum limit of the entropy uncertainty relation (EUR) is approached by making $N$ very small in our numerical work. We examine the effect of correlations in the calculation of information entropy. Comparison with the mean-field result shows that the correlated basis function is indeed required to characterize the important features of the information entropies. W…
We introduce a general bipartite-like representation and Schmidt decomposition of an arbitrary pure state of $N$ indistinguishable fermions, based on states of $M<N$ and $(N-M)$ fermions. It is directly connected with the reduced $M$- and $(N-M)$-body density matrices (DMs), which have the same spectrum in such states. The concept of $M$-body entanglement emerges naturally in this scenario, generalizing that of one-body entanglement. Rigorous majorization relations satisfied by the normalized $M$-body DM are then derived, which imply that the associated entropy will not increase, on average, u…
We study the time evolution of fidelity in a dynamical many body system, namely a kicked Ising model, modified to allow for a time reversal invariance breaking. We find good agreement with the random matrix predictions in the realm of strong perturbations. In particular for the time-reversal symmetry breaking case the predicted revival at Heisenberg time is clearly seen.
We propose a new quantity called modulus fidelity to measure the closeness of two quantum pure states. Especially, we use it to investigate the closeness of eigenstates of quantum many-body systems. When the system is integrable, the modulus fidelity of neighbor eigenstates displays a large fluctuation. But the modulus fidelity is close to a constant when system becomes non-integrable with fluctuation reduced drastically. Average modulus fidelity of neighbor eigenstates increases with the increase of parameters that destroy the integrability, which also indicates the integrable-chaos transitio…
It is argued that a typical many body energy eigenstate has a well defined thermodynamic entropy and that individual eigenstates possess thermodynamic characteristics analogous to those of generic isolated systems. We examine large systems with eigenstate energies equivalent to finite temperatures. When quasi-static evolution of a system is adiabatic (in the quantum mechanical sense), two coupled subsystems can transfer heat from one subsystem to another yet remain in an energy eigenstate. To explicitly construct the entropy from the wave function, degrees of freedom are divided into two unequ…
The entanglement entropy and quantum fidelity in a hard-core-boson model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions are studied numerically. By using exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group, the effects of interactions on entanglement entropy and fidelity susceptibility in the model are investigated. We focus our attention on looking for three quantum phase transitions. It is found that the first derivative of the entanglement entropy can indicate all of three phase transitions, while the fidelity susceptibility cannot predict the transition from superfluid…
We explore the relation between entanglement entropy of quantum many body systems and the distribution of corresponding, properly selected, observables. Such a relation is necessary to actually measure the entanglement entropy. We show that in general, the Shannon entropy of the probability distribution of certain symmetry observables gives a lower bound to the entropy. In some cases this bound is saturated and directly gives the entropy. We also show other cases in which the probability distribution contains enough information to extract the entropy: we show how this is done in several exampl…
Gaussian state decoherence aspects due to interacting magnetic-like and gravitational fields are quantified through the quantum fidelity and Shannon entropy in the scope of the phase-space representation of elementary quantum systems. For Gaussian Wigner functions describing harmonic oscillator states, an interacting external field destroys the quantum fidelity and introduces a quantum beating behavior. Likewise, it introduces harmonic profiles for free particle systems. Some aspects of quantum decoherence for the quantum harmonic oscillator and for the free particle limit are also quantified …
Bridging the second law of thermodynamics and microscopic reversible dynamics has been a longstanding problem in statistical physics. We here address this problem on the basis of quantum many-body physics, and discuss how the entropy production saturates in isolated quantum systems under unitary dynamics. First, we rigorously prove the saturation of the entropy production in the long time regime, where a total system can be in a pure state. Second, we discuss the non-negativity of the entropy production at saturation, implying the second law of thermodynamics. This is based on the eigenstate t…

The quantum speed limit specifies a universal bound of the fidelity between the initial state and the time-evolved state. We apply this method to find a bound of the fidelity between the adiabatic state and the time-evolved state. The bound is characterized by the counterdiabatic Hamiltonian and can be used to evaluate the worst case performance of the adiabatic quantum computation. The result is improved by imposing additional conditions and we examine several models to find a tight bound. We also derive a different type of quantum speed limits that is meaningful even when we take the thermod…
The aim of the present paper is to give axiomatic characterization of quantum relative entropy utilizing resource conversion scenario. We consider two sets of axioms: non-asymptotic and asymptotic. In the former setting, we prove that the upperbound and the lowerbund of D^{Q}(ρ||σ) is D^{R}(ρ||σ):=trρlnσ^{1/2}ρ^{-1}σ^{1/2} and D(ρ||σ):= trρ(lnρ-lnσ), respectively. In the latter setting, we prove uniqueness of quantum relative entropy, that is, D^{Q}(ρ||σ) should equal a constant multiple of D(ρ||σ). In the analysis, we define and use reverse test and asymptotic reverse test, which are natural …
Recent theoretical and experiments have explored the use of entangled photons as a spectroscopic probe of material systems. We develop here a theoretical description for entropy production in the scattering of an entangled biphoton state within an optical cavity. We develop this using perturbation theory by expanding the biphoton scattering matrix in terms of single-photon terms in which we introduce the photon-photon interaction via a complex coupling constant, $ξ$. We show that the von Neumann entropy provides a succinct measure of this interaction. We then develop a microscopic model and sh…
We study the fidelity and the entanglement entropy for the ground states of quantum systems that have infinite-order quantum phase transitions. In particular, we consider the quantum O(2) model with a spin-$S$ truncation, where there is an infinite-order Gaussian (IOG) transition for $S = 1$ and there are Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions for $S \ge 2$. We show that the height of the peak in the fidelity susceptibility ($χ_F$) converges to a finite thermodynamic value as a power law of $1/L$ for the IOG transition and as $1/\ln(L)$ for BKT transitions. The peak position of $χ_F…
Entanglement entropy has become an important theoretical concept in condensed matter physics, because it provides a unique tool for characterizing quantum mechanical many-body phases and new kinds of quantum order. However, the experimental measurement of entanglement entropy in a many-body systems is widely believed to be unfeasible, owing to the nonlocal character of this quantity. Here, we propose a general method to measure the entanglement entropy. The method is based on a quantum switch (a two-level system) coupled to a composite system consisting of several copies of the original many-b…
Trace inequalities are general techniques with many applications in quantum information theory, often replacing classical functional calculus in noncommutative settings. The physics of quantum field theory and holography, however, motivate entropy inequalities in type III von Neumann algebras that lack a semifinite trace. The Haagerup and Kosaki $L_p$ spaces enable re-expressing trace inequalities in non-tracial von Neumann algebras. In particular, we show this for the generalized Araki-Lieb-Thirring and Golden-Thompson inequalities from (Sutter, Berta \& Tomamichel 2017). Then, using the Haag…
The transition between many-body localized states and the delocalized thermal states is an eigen-state phase transition at finite energy density outside the scope of conventional quantum statistical mechanics. In this work we investigate the properties of the transition by studying the behavior of the entanglement entropy of a subsystem of size $L_A$ in a system of size $L > L_A$ near the critical regime of the many-body localization transition. The many-body eigenstates are obtained by exact diagonalization of a disordered quantum spin chain under twisted boundary conditions to reduce the fin…
