A positive P-representation for the spin-j thermal density matrix is given in closed form. The representation is constructed by regarding the wave function as the internal state of a closed-loop control system. A continuous interferometric measurement process is proved to einselect coherent states, and feedback control is proved to be equivalent to a thermal reservoir. Ito equations are derived, and the P-representation is obtained from a Fokker-Planck equation. Langevin equations are derived, and the force noise is shown to be the Hilbert transform of the measurement noise. The formalism is applied to magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) and gravity wave (GW) interferometry. Some unsolved problems relating to drift and diffusion on Hilbert spaces are noted.
Given an irreducible representation of a group G, we show that all the covariant positive operator valued measures based on G/Z, where Z is a central subgroup, are described by trace class, trace one positive operators.
We consider quasi-free stochastically positive ground and thermal states on Weyl algebras in Euclidean time formulation. In particular, we obtain a new derivation of a general form of thermal quasi-free state and give conditions when such state is stochastically positive i.e. when it defines periodic stochastic process with respect to Euclidean time, so called thermal process. Then we show that thermal process completely determines modular structure canonically associated with quasi-free state on Weyl algebra. We discuss a variety of examples connected with free field theories on globally hype…
We examine the fixed space of positive trace-preserving super-operators. We describe a specific structure that this space must have and what the projection onto it must look like. We show how these results, in turn, lead to an alternative proof of the complete characterization of the fixed space of completely positive trace-preserving super-operators.
An implementation of the positive operator valued measure (POVM) is given. By using this POVM one can realize the probabilistic teleportation of an unknown two-particle state.
Given a unitary representation $U$ of an Abelian group $G$ and a subgroup $H$, we characterise the positive operator valued quotient group $G/H$ and covariant with respect to $U$.
A proof of the Kochen-Specker theorem for a single two-level system is presented. It employs five eight-element positive operator-valued measures and a simple algebraic reasoning based on the geometry of the dodecahedron.
In the coordinate representation of thermofield dynamics, we investigate the thermalized displaced squeezed thermal state which involves two temperatures successively. We give the wavefunction and the matrix element of the density operator at any time, and accordingly calculate some quantities related to the position, momentum and particle number operator, special cases of which are consistent with the results in the literature. The two temperatures have diffenent correlations with the squeeze and coherence components. Moreover, different from the properties of the position and momentum, the a…
We present an experimental scheme for the implementation of arbitrary generalized measurements, represented by positive-operator valued measures, on the polarization of single photons, using linear optical devices. Further, we experimentally test a Kochen-Specker theorem for single qubits using positive operator-valued measures. Our experimental results for the first time disprove non-contextual hidden-variable theories, even for single qubits.
A limitation on simultaneous measurement of two arbitrary positive operator valued measures is discussed. In general, simultaneous measurement of two noncommutative observables is only approximately possible. Following Werner's formulation, we introduce a distance between observables to quantify an accuracy of measurement. We derive an inequality that relates the achievable accuracy with noncommutativity between two observables. As a byproduct a necessary condition for two positive operator valued measures to be simultaneously measurable is obtained.
Given a many-body system, we define a quantity, the Codification Volume of an operator algebra, which measures the size of the subspace with whom a given algebra is correlated. We explicitly calculate it for some limit cases, including vacuum states of local Hamiltonians and random states taken from the Haar ensemble. We argue that this volume should grow irreversibly in a thermalization process, and illustrate it numerically on a non-integrable quantum spin chain.
In this paper, a class of indecomposable positive finite rank elementary operators of order $(n,n)$ are constructed. This allows us to give a simple necessary and sufficient criterion for separability of pure states in bipartite systems of any dimension in terms of positive elementary operators of order $(2,2)$ and get some new mixed entangled states that can not be detected by the positive partial transpose (PPT) criterion and the realignment criterion.
Completely positive quantum operations are frequently discussed in the contexts of statistical mechanics and quantum information. They are customarily given by maps forming positive operator-values measures. To intuitively understand physical meanings of such abstract operations, the method of phase-space representations is examined. This method enables one to grasp the operations in terms of the classical statistical notions. As an example of physical importance, here, the phase-space representation of the completely positive quantum operation arising from the single-mode subdynamics of the t…
Given a unitary representation U of a compact group G and a transitive G-space $Ω$, we characterize the extremal elements of the convex set of all U-covariant positive operator valued measures.
In a certain sense we generalize the recently introduced and extensively studied notion called quantum Rényi divergence (in another name, sandwiched Rényi relative entropy) and describe the structures of corresponding symmetries. More precisely, we characterize all transformations on the set of density operators which leave our new general quantity invariant and also determine the structure of all bijective transformations on the cone of positive definite operators which preserve the quantum Rényi divergence.
We present a correspondence between positive operator valued measures (POVMs) and sets of generalized coherent states. Positive operator valued measures describe quantum observables and, similarly to quantum states, also quantum observables can be mixed. We show how the formalism of generalized coherent states leads to a useful characterization of extremal POVMs. We prove that covariant phase space observables related to squeezed states are extremal, while the ones related to number states are not extremal.
We provide an efficient approximation for the exponential of a local operator in quantum spin systems using tensor-network representations of a cluster expansion. We benchmark this cluster tensor network operator (cluster TNO) for one-dimensional systems, and show that the approximation works well for large real- or imaginary-time steps. We use this formalism for representing the thermal density operator of a two-dimensional quantum spin system at a certain temperature as a single cluster TNO, which we can then contract by standard contraction methods for two-dimensional tensor networks. We ap…
We determine the structure of all bijections on the cone of positive semidefinite operators which preserve the quantum $f$-divergence for an arbitrary strictly convex function $f$ defined on the positive halfline. It turns out that any such transformation is implemented by either a unitary or an antiunitary operator.
We describe the structure of all bijective maps on the cone of positive definite operators acting on a finite and at least two-dimensional complex Hilbert space which preserve the quantum $χ_α^2$-divergence for some $α\in [0,1]$. We prove that any such transformation is necessarily implemented by either a unitary or an antiunitary operator. Similar results concerning maps on the cone of positive semidefinite operators as well as on the set of all density operators are also derived.
