Quantum continuous variables are being explored as an alternative means to implement quantum key distribution, which is usually based on single photon counting. The former approach is potentially advantageous because it should enable higher key distribution rates. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a quantum key distribution protocol based on the transmission of gaussian-modulated coherent states (consisting of laser pulses containing a few hundred photons) and shot-noise-limited homodyne detection; squeezed or entangled beams are not required. Complete secret key extraction is achieved using a reverse reconciliation technique followed by privacy amplification. The reverse reconciliation technique is in principle secure for any value of the line transmission, against gaussian individual attacks based on entanglement and quantum memories. Our table-top experiment yields a net key transmission rate of about 1.7 megabits per second for a loss-free line, and 75 kilobits per second for a line with losses of 3.1 dB. We anticipate that the scheme should remain effective for lines with higher losses, particularly because the present limitations are essentially technical, so that significant margin for improvement is available on both the hardware and software.
We present a detailed analysis of the numerical modelling and evaluation of sub-systems in a Gaussian modulated CV-QKD system, incorporating non-ideal operations, and along with associated results.
We investigate the routing of a single-photon in a modulated cavity optomechanical system, in which the cavity is driven by a strong coupling field, and the mechanical resonator (MR) is modulated with a weak coherent field. We show that, when there is no a weak coherent field modulating the MR, the system cannot act as a single-photon router, since the signal will be completely covered by the quantum and thermal noises. By introducing the weak coherent field, we can achieve the routing of the single-photon by adjusting the frequency of the weak coherent field, and the system can be immune to t…
In the Gaussian-modulated coherent states (GMCS) quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol, Alice prepares quantum states \emph{actively}: for each transmission, Alice generates a pair of Gaussian-distributed random numbers, encodes them on a weak coherent pulse using optical amplitude and phase modulators, and then transmits the Gaussian-modulated weak coherent pulse to Bob. Here we propose a \emph{passive} state preparation scheme using a thermal source. In our scheme, Alice splits the output of a thermal source into two spatial modes using a beam splitter. She measures one mode locally using …

Discretely-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) is more suitable for long-distance transmission compared with its Gaussian-modulated CVQKD counterpart. However, its security can only be guaranteed when modulation variance is very small, which limits its further development. To solve this problem, in this work, we propose a novel scheme for discretely-modulated CVQKD using multi-label learning technology, called multi-label learning-based CVQKD (ML-CVQKD). In particular, the proposed scheme divides the whole quantum system into state learning and state prediction. The …
A high-speed Gaussian modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) with a local local oscillator (LLO) is experimentally demonstrated based on pilot-tone-assisted phase compensation. In the proposed scheme, the frequency-multiplexing and polarization-multiplexing techniques are used for the separate transmission and heterodyne detection between quantum signal and pilot tone, guaranteeing no crosstalk from strong pilot tone to weak quantum signal and different detection requirements of low-noise for quantum signal and high-saturation limitation for pilot tone. Moreover, compar…
We study the coherent dynamics of an excited two-level atom in a vacuum optomechanical cavity and find that the original atom-cavity Rabi oscillation is sinusoidally modulated by the light-mechanics coupling as the Rabi splitting is on resonance with the mechanical mode. We develop an analytic model in a three-dimensional Hilbert subspace to explain this phenomenon and employ numerical simulations of the density-matrix master equation to confirm our analysis. We also show that the modulated Rabi oscillation survives in presence of dissipations and other non-ideal factors.
We consider multiple-period states in systems of periodically modulated qubits. In such states the discrete time-translation symmetry imposed by the modulation is broken. We explicitly show how multiple-period states emerge in the simplest quantum system, a single qubit subjected to a pulsed resonant modulation and/or a pulsed modulation of the transition frequency. We also show that a qubit chain with the qubit coupling modulated at twice the qubit frequency has symmetry that allows mapping it on the Kitaev chain and thus provides an example of a topologically nontrivial Floquet system. An ex…
Coherent control of quantum transitions -- indispensable in quantum technology -- generally relies on the interaction of quantum systems with electromagnetic radiation. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that the non-radiative electromagnetic near-field of a temporally modulated free-space electron beam can be utilized for coherent control of quantum systems. We show that such manipulation can be performed with only classical control over the electron beam itself, and is readily realizable with current technology. This approach may provide a pathway towards spectrally selective quantum control…
We study the coherent dynamics of a qubit excited by an amplitude-modulated electromagnetic field under the Rabi resonance when the frequency of the low-frequency modulation field matches the Rabi frequency in the high-frequency field. Due to destructive interference of multiple photon processes at the ultrastrong coupling between the qubit and the low-frequency driving field, Rabi oscillations result exclusively from the Bloch-Siegert effect. It is directly observed in the time-resolved coherent dynamics as the Bloch-Siegert oscillation. In this case, triplets in Fourier spectra of the cohere…

Correspondingly, the asymptotic secret key rate (SKR) is 288.421 Mbps, 159.395 Mbps, 50.004 Mbps and 7.579 Mbps for discrete Gaussian (DG) 64QAM, and 326.708 Mbps, 179.348 Mbps, 50.623 Mbps and 9.212 Mbps …
We investigate the composable security of unidimensional contin- uous variable quantum key distribution (UCVQKD), which is based on the Gaussian modulation of a single quadrature of the coherent-state of light, aiming to provide a simple implementation of key distribution compared to the symmetrically modulated Gaussian coherent-state protocols. This protocol neglects the necessity in one of the quadrature modulation in coherent-states and hence reduces the system complexity. To clarify the influence of finite-size effect and the cost of performance degeneration, we establish the relation- shi…
Generation of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase has achieved a state-of-the-art in mesoscopic systems with manipulation and control of the AB effect. The possibility of transfer information enconded in such systems to non-classical states of light increases the possible scenarios where the information can be manipulated and transfered. In this paper we propose a quantum transfer of the AB phase generated in a spintronic device, a topological spin transistor (TST), to an quantum optical device, a coherent state superposition in high-Q cavity and discuss optical and spin-optical superpositions in the pre…
We suggest an improved plug-and-play measurement-device-independent (MDI) continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) via the dual-phase modulation (DPM), aiming to solve an implementation problem with no extra performance penalty. The synchronous loophole of different lasers from Alice and Bob can be elegantly eliminated in the plug-and-play configuration, which gives birth to the convenient implementation when comparing to the Gaussian-modulated coherent-state protocol. While the local oscillator (LO) can be locally generated by the trusted part Charlie, the LO-aimed attacks can be …
The coherence resource theory needs to study the operational value and efficiency which can be broadly formulated as the question: when can one coherent state be converted into another under incoherent operations. We answer this question completely for one-mode continuous-variable systems by characterizing conversion of coherent Gaussian states under incoherent Gaussian operations in terms of their first and second moments. The no-go theorem of purification of coherent Gaussian states is also built. The structure of incoherent Gaussian operations of two-mode continuous-variable systems is disc…
Here we report the performance of a discrete modulated Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution protocol based on eight and sixteen state optimal Amplitude Phase Keying constellations with pure loss quantum channel transmission. Our constellations use the same amplitudes and state probability as in an optimal four-state unidimensional constellation model and apply amplitude/phase modulation to the quadratures of coherent states. We compare the obtained results with the performance of conventional $m$-PSK and $m$-APK constellations. The results presented show that protocols that use the pro…
We propose a practical strategy for choosing sets of input coherent states that are near-optimal for reconstructing single-mode Gaussian quantum processes with output-state heterodyne measurements. We first derive analytical expressions for the mean squared-error that quantifies the reconstruction accuracy for general process tomography and large data. Using such expressions, upon relaxing the trace-preserving constraint, we introduce an error-reducing set of input coherent states that is independent of the measurement data or the unknown true process -- the geometrical set. We numerically sho…
Light-matter interactions that are nonlinear with respect to the photon number reveal the true quantum nature of coherent states. We characterize how coherent states depart from Gaussian by the emergence of negative values in their Wigner function during the evolution while maintaining their characteristic Poissonian photon statistics. Such states have non-minimum uncertainty yet present a metrological advantage that can reach the Heisenberg limit. Non-Gaussianity of light arises as a general property of nonlinear interactions, which only requires a polarizable media, resonant or dispersive. O…
In this paper, We investigate three-mode photon-added Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled coherent states by repeatedly operating the photon-added operator on the GHZ entangled coherent states. The product of two Laguerre polynomials is demonstrated to be connected to the normalizing constant. The influence of the operation on the non-classical and non-Gaussian behavior of the GHZ entangled coherent states is investigated. Sub-Poissonian statistics, such as Mandel's parameter and the negativity of the Wigner function, show that non-classical properties can enhance GHZ entangled coheren…
Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD) protocols with discrete modulation are interesting due to their experimental simplicity and their great potential for massive deployment in the quantum-secured networks, but their security analysis is less advanced than that of Gaussian modulation schemes. In this work, we apply a numerical method to analyze the security of discrete-modulation protocols against collective attacks in the asymptotic limit, paving the way for a full security proof with finite-size effects. While our method is general for discrete-modulation schemes, we focus o…
