We perform a study of various anharmonic potentials using a recently developed method. We calculate both the wave functions and the energy eigenvalues for the ground and first excited states of the quartic, sextic and octic potentials with high precision, comparing the results with other techniques available in the literature.
We theoretically and experimentally examine the effects of anharmonic terms in the trapping potential for linear chains of trapped ions. We concentrate on two different effects that become significant at different levels of anharmonicity. The first is a modification of the oscillation frequencies and amplitudes of the ions' normal modes of vibration for multi-ion crystals, resulting from each ion experiencing a different curvature in the potential. In the second effect, which occurs with increased anharmonicity or higher excitation amplitude, amplitude-dependent shifts of the normal-mode frequ…
The application of the optimized expansion for the quantum-mechanical propagation in the anharmonic potential $λx^4$ is discussed for real and imaginary time. The first order results in the imaginary time formalism provide approximations to the free energy and particle density which agree well with the exact results in the whole range of temperatures.
A mapping is obtained relating radial screened Coulomb systems with low screening parameters to radial anharmonic oscillators in N-dimensional space. Using the formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, it is shown that exact solutions of these potentials exist when the parameters satisfy certain constraints.
A general procedure based on shift operators is formulated to deal with anharmonic potentials. It is possible to extract the ground state energy analytically using our method provided certain consistency relations are satisfied. Analytic expressions for the exact ground state energy have also been derived specifically for a large class of the one-dimensional oscillator with cubic-quartic anharmonic terms. Our analytical results can be used to check the accuracy of existing numerical methods, for instance the method of state-dependent diagonalization. Our results also agree with the asymptotic …
Quantum states can be described equivalently by density matrices, Wigner functions or quantum tomograms. We analyze the accuracy and performance of three related semiclassical approaches to quantum dynamics, in particular with respect to their numerical implementation. As test cases, we consider the time evolution of Gaussian wave packets in different one-dimensional geometries, whereby tunneling, resonance and anharmonicity effects are taken into account. The results and methods are benchmarked against an exact quantum mechanical treatment of the system, which is based on a highly efficient C…
Anharmonic oscillators with the sextic and decatic potentials are studied employing the refinable interpolating scale functions. This method yields highly accurate values of both energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the sextic and decatic oscillator without constraining the potential parameters. Convergence of the solutions in the present method is noticed to be very fast.
We investigate the effect of anharmonicity and interactions on the dynamics of an initially Gaussian wavepacket in a weakly anharmonic potential. We note that depending on the strength and sign of interactions and anharmonicity, the quantum state can be either localized or delocalized in the potential. We formulate a classical model of this phenomenon and compare it to quantum simulations done for a self consistent potential given by the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation.
We have developed a simple method to solve anharmonic oscillators equations. The idea of our method is mainly based on the partitioning of the potential curve into (n+1) small intervals, solving the Schrödinger equation in each subintervals, and writing the continuity conditions of each solutions at each subintervals boundary, which leads to the energy quantification condition, so to the energy levels, and finally, one can calculate the exact wave function associated to each energy level. Our method has been applied to three examples: the well-known square well, the bounded and unbounded harmo…
The two-dimensional hydrogen with a linear potential in a magnetic field is solved by two different methods. Furthermore the connection between the model and an anharmonic oscillator had been investigated by methods of KS transformation.
We show that the authors of the commented paper draw their conclusions from the eigenvalues of truncated Hamiltonian matrices that do not converge as the matrix dimension increases. In one of the studied examples the authors missed the real positive eigenvalues that already converge towards the exact eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian operator and focused their attention on the complex ones that do not. We also show that the authors misread Bender's argument about the eigenvalues of the harmonic oscillator with boundary conditions in the complex-$x$ plane (Rep. Prog. Phys. {\bf 70} (2007) 947).
The energy eigenvalues of the anharmonic oscillator characterized by the cubic potential for various eigenstates are determined within the framework of the hypervirial-Padé summation method. For this purpose the E[3,3] and E[3,4] Padé approximants are formed to the energy perturbation series and given the energy eigenvalues up to fourth order in terms of the anharmonicity parameter $λ$.
The time evolution of anharmonic molecular wave packets is investigated under the influence of the environment consisting of harmonic oscillators. These oscillators represent photon or phonon modes and assumed to be in thermal equilibrium. Our model explicitly incorporates the fact that in the case of a nonequidistant spectrum the rates of the environment induced transitions are different for each transition. The nonunitary time evolution is visualized by the aid of the Wigner function related to the vibrational state of the molecule. The time scale of decoherence is much shorter than that of …
Nonclassicality is a key ingredient for quantum enhanced technologies and experiments involving macro- scopic quantum coherence. Considering various exactly-solvable quantum-oscillator systems, we address the role played by the anharmonicity of their potential in the establishment of nonclassical features. Specifically, we show that a monotonic relation exists between the the entropic nonlinearity of the considered potentials and their ground state nonclassicality, as quantified by the negativity of the Wigner function. In addition, in order to clarify the role of squeezing--which is not captu…
In this work we explicitly show resurgence relations between perturbative and one instanton sectors of the resonance energy levels for cubic and quartic anharmonic potentials in one-dimensional quantum mechanics. Both systems satisfy the Dunne-Unsal relation and hence we are able to derive one-instanton non-perturbative contributions with the fluctuation terms to the energy merely from the perturbative data. We confirm our results with previous results obtained by Zinn-Justin et al.
There are no phase-space trajectories for anharmonic quantum systems, but Wigner's phase-space representation of quantum mechanics features Wigner current~$\bf J$. This current reveals fine details of quantum dynamics -- finer than is ordinarily thought accessible according to quantum folklore invoking Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Here, we focus on the simplest, most intuitive, and analytically accessible aspects of~$\bf J$. We investigate features of~$\bf J$ for bound states of time-reversible, weakly-anharmonic one-dimensional quantum-mechanical systems which are weakly-excited. We es…
First time anharmonic potential $V(r)=ar^2+br-\frac{c}{r} \,,(a>0) $ is examined for $N$-dimensional Schrödinger equation via Laplace transformation method. In transformed space, the behavior of the Laplace transform at the singular point of the differential equation is used to study the eigenfunctions and the energy eigenvalues. The results are easy to derive and identical with those obtained by other methods.
It is already known that the quantum quartic single-well anharmonic oscillator $V_{ao}(x)=x^2+g^2 x^4$ and double-well anharmonic oscillator $V_{dw}(x)= x^2(1 - gx)^2$ are essentially one-parametric, their eigenstates depend on a combination $(g^2 \hbar)$. Hence, these problems are reduced to study the potentials $V_{ao}=u^2+u^4$ and $V_{dw}=u^2(1-u)^2$, respectively. It is shown that by taking uniformly-accurate approximation for anharmonic oscillator eigenfunction $Ψ_{ao}(u)$, obtained recently, see JPA 54 (2021) 295204 [1] and Arxiv 2102.04623 [2], and then forming the function $Ψ_{dw}(u)=Ψ…

Utilizing an appropriate ansatz to the wave function, we reproduce the exact bound-state solutions of the radial Schrodinger equation to various exactly solvable sextic anharmonic oscillator and confining perturbed Coulomb models in $D$-dimensions. We show that the perturbed Coulomb problem with eigenvalue $E$ can be transformed to a sextic anharmonic oscillator problem with eigenvalue E. We also check the explicit relevance of these two related problems in higher-space dimensions. It is shown that exact solutions of these potentials exist when their coupling parameters with $k=D+2\ell $ appea…
We study self-oscillations of an optomechanical system, where coherent mechanical oscillations are induced by a driven optical or microwave cavity, for the case of an anharmonic mechanical oscillator potential. A semiclassical analytical model is developed to characterize the limit cycle for large mechanical amplitudes corresponding to a weak nonlinearity. As a result, we predict conditions to achieve subpoissonian phonon statistics in the steady state, indicating classically forbidden behavior. We compare with numerical simulations and find very good agreement. Our model is quite general and …
The power series method has been adapted to compute the spectrum of the Schrodinger equation for central potential of the form $V(r)={d_{-2}\over r^2}+{d_{-1}\over r}+\sum_{i=0}^{\infty} d_{i}r^i$. The bound-state energies are given as zeros of a calculable function, if the potential is confined in a spherical box. For an unconfined potential the interval bounding the energy eigenvalues can be determined in a similar way with an arbitrarily chosen precision. The very accurate results for various spherically symmetric anharmonic potentials are presented.
A simple uniform approximation of the logarithmic derivative of the ground state eigenfunction for both the quantum-mechanical anharmonic oscillator and the double-well potential given by $V= m^2 x^2+g x^4$ at arbitrary $g \geq 0$ for $m^2>0$ and $m^2<0$, respectively, is presented. It is shown that if this approximation is taken as unperturbed problem it leads to an extremely fast convergent perturbation theory.
There is currently intensive research into creating a large-scale quantum computer with trapped ions. It is well known that for a linear ion crystal in a harmonic potential, the ions near the center are more closely spaced compared to the ions near the ends. This is problematic as the number of ions increases. Here, we consider a linear ion crystal in an anharmonic potential that is purely quartic in position. We find that the ions are more evenly spaced compared to the harmonic case. We develop a variational approach to calculate the properties of the ground state. We also characterize the zi…
We use a power-series expansion to calculate the eigenvalues of anharmonic oscillators bounded by two infinite walls. We show that for large finite values of the separation of the walls, the calculated eigenvalues are of the same high accuracy as the values recently obtained for the unbounded case by the inner-product quantization method. We also apply our method to the Morse potential. The eigenvalues obtained in this case are in excellent agreement with the exact values for the unbounded Morse potential.
We prove a powerful scaling property for the extremality condition in the recently developed variational perturbation theory which converts divergent perturbation expansions into exponentially fast convergent ones. The proof is given for the energy eigenvalues of an anharmonic oscillator with an arbitrary $x^p$-potential. The scaling property greatly increases the accuracy of the results.
We present new quasi-exactly solvable models with inverse quartic, sextic, octic and decatic power potentials, respectively. We solve these models exactly via the functional Bethe ansatz method. For each case, we give closed-form solutions for the energies and the wave functions as well as analytical expressions for the allowed potential parameters in terms of a set of algebraic equations.
We obtain sufficiently accurate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the anharmonic oscillator with potential $V(x,y)=x^{2}y^{2}$ by means of three different methods. Our results strongly suggest that the spectrum of this oscillator is discrete in agreement with early rigorous mathematical proofs and against a recent statement that cast doubts about it.
Quantum particle is considered confined in a toy-model potential possessing multiple minima. For the specific choice of the family of potentials (in the form of harmonic oscillator plus several logarithmic infinitely high but penetrable barriers), a facilitated tractability of the related bound-state problem is achieved by the use of the (slightly modified) large-N expansion technique. The phenomenological appeal of the possibility of simulation of a certain `relocalization' quantum catastrophe is emphasized.
We show that the Riccati form of the Schrodinger equation can be reformulated in terms of two linear equations depending on an arbitrary function G. When $G$ and the potential are polynomials, the solutions of these two equations are entire functions (L and K) and the zeroes of K are identical to those of the wave function. Requiring such a zero at a large but finite value of the argument yields the low energy eigenstates with exponentially small errors. Judicious choice of G can improve dramatically the numerical treatment. The method yields many significant digits with modest computer means.
The paper by Bowen, Mancini, Fessatidis, and Murawski (2012 Phys. Scr. {\bf 85}, 065005) demonstrates in a dramatic fashion the serious difficulties that can arise when one rushes to perform numerical studies before understanding the physics and mathematics of the problem at hand and without understanding the limitations of the numerical methods used. Based on their flawed numerical work, the authors conclude that the work of Bender and Boettcher is wrong even though it has been verified at a completely rigorous level. Unfortunately, the numerical procedures performed and described in the pape…
We construct a time-dependent double well potential as an exact spectral equivalent to the explicitly time-dependent negative quartic oscillator with a time-dependent mass term. Defining the unstable anharmonic oscillator Hamiltonian on a contour in the lower-half complex plane, the resulting time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is first mapped by an exact solution of the time-dependent Dyson equation to a time-dependent Hermitian Hamiltonian defined on the real axis. When unitary transformed, scaled and Fourier transformed we obtain a time-dependent double well potential bounded from belo…
In our previous paper I (del Valle--Turbiner, Int. J. Mod. Phys. A34, 1950143, 2019) it was developed the formalism to study the general $D$-dimensional radial anharmonic oscillator with potential $V(r)= \frac{1}{g^2}\,\hat{V}(gr)$. It was based on the Perturbation Theory (PT) in powers of $g$ (weak coupling regime) and in inverse, fractional powers of $g$ (strong coupling regime) in both $r$-space and in $(gr)$-space, respectively. As the result it was introduced - the Approximant - a locally-accurate uniform compact approximation of a wave function. If taken as a trial function in variationa…
We extend the notion of quasi-exactly solvable (QES) models from potential ones and differential equations to Bose systems. We obtain conditions under which algebraization of the part of the spectrum occurs. In some particular cases simple exact expressions for several energy levels of an anharmonic Bose oscillator are obtained explicitly. The corresponding results do not exploit perturbation theory and include strong coupling regime. A generic Hamiltonian under discussion cannot, in contrast to QES potential models, be expressed as a polynomial in generators of $sl_{2}$ algebra. The suggested…
