We present a protocol for transfer of an unknown quantum state. The protocol is based on a two-mode cavity interacting dispersively in a sequential manner with three-level atoms in $Λ$ configuration. We propose a scheme for quantum networking using an atomic channel. We investigate the effect of cavity decoherence in the entire process. Further, we demonstrate the possibility of an efficient quantum memory for arbitrary superposition of two modes of a cavity contaning one photon.
We design machines that learn how to rotate a quantum bit about an initially unknown direction, encoded in the state of a spin-j particle. We show that a machine equipped with a quantum memory of O(log j) qubits can outperform all machines with purely classical memory, even if the size of their memory is arbitrarily large. The advantage is present for every finite j and persists as long as the quantum memory is accessed for no more than O(j) times. We establish these results by deriving the ultimate performance achievable with purely classical memories, thus providing a benchmark that can be u…
The implementation of polarization-based quantum communication is limited by signal loss and decoherence caused by the birefringence of a single-mode fiber. We investigate the Knill dynamical decoupling scheme, implemented using half-wave plates, to minimize decoherence and show that a fidelity greater than $99\%$ can be achieved in absence of rotation error and fidelity greater than $96\%$ can be achieved in presence of rotation error. Such a scheme can be used to preserve any quantum state with high fidelity and has potential application for constructing all optical quantum delay line, quant…
Qutrits (i.e., three-level quantum systems) can be used to achieve many quantum information and communication tasks due to their large Hilbert spaces. In this work, we propose a scheme to transfer an unknown quantum state between two flux qutrits coupled to two superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators. The quantum state transfer can be deterministically achieved without measurements. Because resonator photons are virtually excited during the operation time, the decoherences caused by the resonator decay and the unwanted inter-resonator crosstalk are greatly suppressed. Moreover, our appro…
A fundamental task in quantum information science is to transfer an unknown state from particle $A$ to particle $B$ (often in remote space locations) by using a bipartite quantum operation $\mathcal{E}^{AB}$. We suggest the power of $\mathcal{E}^{AB}$ for quantum state transfer (QST) to be the maximal average probability of QST over the initial states of particle $B$ and the identifications of the state vectors between $A$ and $B$. We find the QST power of a bipartite quantum operations satisfies four desired properties between two $d$-dimensional Hilbert spaces. When $A$ and $B$ are qubits, t…
We demonstrate that the quantum communication between two parties can be significantly improved if the receiver is allowed to store the received signals in a quantum memory before decoding them. In the limit of an infinite memory, the transfer is perfect. We prove that this scheme allows the transfer of arbitrary multipartite states along Heisenberg chains of spin-1/2 particles with random coupling strengths.
Different from the previous works on generating entangled states, this work is focused on how to transfer the prepared entangled states onto memory qubits for protecting them against decoherence. We here consider a physical system consisting of $n$ operation qubits and $2n$ memory qubits placed in a cavity or coupled to a resonator. A method is presented for transferring $n$-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states from the operation qubits (i.e., information processing cells) onto the memory qubits (i.e., information memory elements with long decoherence time). The transferred…
We discuss restrictions imposed by quantum mechanics on the process of matrix elements transfer from the one system to another. This is relevant for various processes of partial state transfer (quantum communication, indirect measurement, polarization transfer, {\it etc}). Given two systems A and B with initial density operators $λ$ and $r$, respectively, we consider most general interactions, which lead to transferring certain matrix elements of unknown $λ$ into those of the final state ${\widetilde r}$ of B. We find that this process leads to eliminating the memory on the transferred (or cer…
We analyze an optomechanical system that can be used to efficiently transfer a quantum state between an optical cavity and a distant mechanical oscillator coupled to a second optical cavity. We show that for a moderate mechanical Q-factor it is possible to achieve a transfer efficiency of $99.4\%$ by using adjustable cavity damping rates and destructive interference. We also show that the quantum mechanical oscillator can be used as a quantum memory device with an efficiency of $96\%$ employing a pulsed optomechanical coupling. Although the mechanical dissipation slightly decreases the efficie…
A quantum memory is a system that enables transfer, storage, and retrieval of optical quantum states by ON/OFF switching of the control signal in each stages of the memory. In particular, it is known that, for perfect transfer of a single-photon state, appropriate shaping of the input pulse is required. However, in general, such a desirable pulse shape has a complicated form, which would be hard to generate in practice. In this paper, for a wide class of linear quantum memory systems, we develop a method that reduces the complexity of the input pulse shape of a single-photon while maintaining …
Transferring a quantum state of a light field to a memory is of particular importance. However, this transfer is usually hampered because the memory system is subjected to some noise and this can limit the performance of the state transfer to a great extent. In this paper, we consider the transfer of a Gaussian state of light to a linear medium memory such as an opto-mechanical oscillator and propose a dynamical feedback controller that suppresses the noise in the memory system. To protect an unknown state, the feedback scheme employs the specific configuration of the quantum error correction;…
We present a general theoretical formalism to compute the fidelity of transformations of unknown quantum states. We then focus on the case of Gaussian transformations of continuous variable quantum systems, where, for the case of a Gaussian distribution of displaced coherent states, the theory is readily tractable by a covariance matrix formalism. We present analytical results for recently implemented teleportation and memory storage protocols for continuous variables.
We show a perfect state transfer of an arbitrary unknown two-qubit state can be achieved via a discrete-time quantum walk with various settings of coin flippings, and extend this method to distribution of an arbitrary unknown multi-qubit entangled state between every pair of sites in the multi-dimensional network. Furthermore, we study the routing of quantum information on this network in a quantum walk architecture, which can be used as quantum information processors to communicate between separated qubits.
In this paper, we study a general linear networked system that contains a tunable memory subsystem; that is, it is decoupled from an optical field for state transportation during the storage process, while it couples to the field during the writing or reading process. The input is given by a single photon state or a coherent state in a pulsed light field. We then completely and explicitly characterize the condition required on the pulse shape achieving the perfect state transfer from the light field to the memory subsystem. The key idea to obtain this result is the use of zero-dynamics princip…
We derive the optimal analytical quantum-state-transfer control solutions for two disparate quantum memory blocks. Employing the SLH formalism description of quantum network theory, we calculate the full quantum dynamics of system populations, which lead to the optimal solution for the highest quantum fidelity attainable. We show that, for the example where the mechanical modes of two optomechanical oscillators act as the quantum memory blocks, their optical modes and a waveguide channel connecting them can be used to achieve a quantum state transfer fidelity of 96% with realistic parameters u…
We study restrictions imposed by quantum mechanics on the process of matrix elements transfer. This problem is at the core of quantum measurements and state transfer. Given two systems $\A$ and $\B$ with initial density matrices $λ$ and $r$, respectively, we consider interactions that lead to transferring certain matrix elements of unknown $λ$ into those of the final state ${\widetilde r}$ of $\B$. We find that this process eliminates the memory on the transferred (or certain other) matrix elements from the final state of $\A$. If one diagonal matrix element is transferred, ${\widetilde r}_{aa…
We address the problem of learning an unknown unitary transformation from a finite number of examples. The problem consists in finding the learning machine that optimally emulates the examples, thus reproducing the unknown unitary maximum fidelity. Learning a unitary is equivalent to storing it in the state of a quantum memory (the memory of the learning machine), and subsequently retrieving it. We prove that, whenever the unknown unitary is drawn from a group, the optimal strategy consists in a parallel call of the available uses followed by a "measure-and-rotate" retrieving. Differing from t…
A quantum kinetic theory of the spin transfer between carriers and Mn atoms in a Mn doped diluted magnetic semiconductor is presented. It turns out that the typical memory time associated with these processes is orders of magnitude shorter than the time scale of the spin transfer. Nevertheless, Markovian rate equations, which are obtained by neglecting the memory, work well only for bulk systems. For quantum wells and wires the quantum kinetic results qualitatively deviate from the Markovian limit under certain conditions. Instead of a monotonic decay of an initially prepared excess electron s…
We report on coherent and multi-temporal mode storage of light using the full atomic frequency comb memory scheme. The scheme involves the transfer of optical atomic excitations in Pr3+:Y2SiO5 to spin-waves in the hyperfine levels using strong single-frequency transfer pulses. Using this scheme, a total of 5 temporal modes are stored and recalled on-demand from the memory. The coherence of the storage and retrieval is characterized using a time-bin interference measurement resulting in visibilities higher than 80%, independent of the storage time. This coherent and multimode spin-wave memory i…
A general scheme for building a quantum memory by transferring quantum information to an essentially decoherence-free memory transition using quantum control is presented and illustrated by computer simulations.
Large scale quantum information processing requires stable and long-lived quantum memories. Here, using atom-photon entanglement, we propose an experimentally feasible scheme to realize decoherence-free quantum memory with atomic ensembles, and show one of its applications, remote transfer of unknown quantum state, based on laser manipulation of atomic ensembles, photonic state operation through optical elements, and single-photon detection with moderate efficiency. The scheme, with inherent fault-tolerance to the practical noise and imperfections, allows one to retrieve the information in the…
We propose to store non-classical states of light into the macroscopic collective nuclear spin ($10^{18}$ atoms) of a $^3$He vapor, using metastability exchange collisions. These collisions, commonly used to transfer orientation from the metastable state $2^{3}S\_1$ to the ground state state of $^3$He, can also transfer quantum correlations. This gives a possible experimental scheme to map a squeezed vacuum field state onto a nuclear spin state with very long storage times (hours).
We show that a quantum walk process can be used to construct and secure quantum memory. More precisely, we show that a localized quantum walk with temporal disorder can be engineered to store the information of a single, unknown qubit on a compact position space and faithfully recover it on demand. Since the localization occurss with a finite spread in position space, the stored information of the qubit will be naturally secured from the simple eavesdropper. Our protocol can be adopted to any quantum system for which experimental control over quantum walk dynamics can be achieved.
We show storage of the circular polarisation of an optical field, transferring it to the spin-state of an individual electron confined in a single semiconductor quantum dot. The state is subsequently readout through the electronically-triggered emission of a single photon. The emitted photon shares the same polarisation as the initial pulse but has a different energy, making the transfer of quantum information between different physical systems possible. With an applied magnetic field of 2 Tesla, spin memory is preserved for at least 1000 times more than the exciton's radiative lifetime.
In a quantum network, a key challenge is to minimize the direct reflection of flying qubits as they couple to stationary, resonator-based memory qubits, as the reflected amplitude represents state transfer infidelity that cannot be directly recovered. Optimizing the transfer fidelity can be accomplished by dynamically varying the resonator's coupling rate to the flying qubit field. Here, we analytically derive the optimal coupling rate profile in the presence of intrinsic loss of the quantum memory using an open quantum systems method that can account for intrinsic resonator losses. We show th…
The non-Markovianity of an arbitrary open quantum system is analyzed in reference to the multi-time statistics given by its monitoring at discrete times. On the one hand, we exploit the hierarchy of inhomogeneous transfer tensors, which provides us with relevant information about the role of correlations between the system and the environment in the dynamics. The connection between the transfer-tensor hierarchy and the CP-divisibility property is then investigated, by showing to what extent quantum Markovianity can be linked to a description of the open-system dynamics by means of the composit…
We propose to use an acoustic surface wave as a memory for a photon carrying orbital angular momentum. We clarify the physical mechanism that enables the transfer of information, derive the angular momentum selection rule that must be obeyed in the process, and show how to optimize the optoacoustic coupling. We theoretically demonstrate that high fidelities can be achieved, using realistic parameters, for the transfer of a coherent optical Laguerre-Gaussian state, associated with large angular momentum, to a mechanical shear mode. Our results add a significant possibility to the ongoing effort…
We consider the transfer of quantum information down a single-mode quantum transmission line. Such quantum channel is modeled as a damped harmonic oscillator, the interaction between the information carriers -a train of N qubits- and the oscillator being of the Jaynes-Cummings kind. Memory effects appear if the state of the oscillator is not reset after each channel use. We show that the setup without resetting is convenient in order to increase the transmission rates, both for the transfer of quantum and classical private information. Our results can be applied to the micromaser.
Quantum systems are inherently dissipation-less, making them excellent candidates even for classical information processing. We propose to use an array of large-spin quantum magnets for realizing a device which has two modes of operation: memory and data-bus. While the weakly interacting low-energy levels are used as memory to store classical information (bits), the high-energy levels strongly interact with neighboring magnets and mediate the spatial movement of information through quantum dynamics. Despite the fact that memory and data-bus require different features, which are usually preroga…
