Inherent gate errors can arise in quantum computation when the actual system Hamiltonian or Hilbert space deviates from the desired one. Two important examples we address are spin-coupled quantum dots in the presence of spin-orbit perturbations to the Heisenberg exchange interaction, and off-resonant transitions of a qubit embedded in a multilevel Hilbert space. We propose a ``dressed qubit'' transformation for dealing with such inherent errors. Unlike quantum error correction, the dressed qubits method does not require additional operations or encoding redundancy, is insenstitive to error magnitude, and imposes no new experimental constraints.
Electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption (EIT and EIA) are usually demonstrated by three-level atomic or atom-like systems. In contrast to the usual case, we theoretically study the EIT and EIA in an equivalent three-level system, which is constructed by dressing a superconducting two-level system (qubit) dressed by a single-mode cavity field. In this equivalent system, we find that both the EIT and the EIA can be tuned by controlling the level-spacing of the superconducting qubit and hence controlling the dressed system. This tunability is due to the dressed relaxation and deph…
Many schemes for implementing quantum information processing require that the atomic states used have a non-zero magnetic moment, however such magnetically sensitive states of an atom are vulnerable to decoherence due to fluctuating magnetic fields. Dressing an atom with an external field is a powerful method of reducing such decoherence [N. Timoney et al., Nature 476, 185], even if the states being dressed are strongly coupled to the environment. We introduce an experimentally simpler method of manipulating such a dressed-state qubit, which allows the implementation of general rotations of th…
We present a scheme to realize multiple-qubit quantum state transfer and quantum logic gate by combining the advantages of Vitanov-style pulses and dressed-state-based shortcut to adiabaticity (STA) in Rydberg atoms. The robustness of the scheme to spontaneous emission can be achieved by reducing the population of Rydberg excited states through the STA technology. Meanwhile, the control errors can be minimized through using the well-designed pulses. Moreover, the dressed-state method applied in the scheme makes the quantum state transfer more smoothly turned on or off with high fidelity and al…

In the dispersive regime of qubit-cavity coupling, classical cavity drive populates the cavity, but leaves the qubit state unaffected. However, the dispersive Hamiltonian is derived after both a frame transformation and an approximation. Therefore, to connect to external experimental devices, the inverse frame transformation from the dispersive frame back to the lab frame is necessary. In this work, we show that in the lab frame the system is best described by an entangled state known as the dressed coherent state, and thus even in the dispersive regime, entanglement is generated between the q…
With the long coherence time, the fixed-frequency transmon qubit is a promising qubit modality for quantum computing. Currently, diverse qubit architectures that utilize fixed-frequency transmon qubits have been demonstrated with high-fidelity gate performance. Nevertheless, the relaxation times of transmon qubits can have large temporal fluctuations, causing instabilities in gate performance. The fluctuations are often believed to be caused by nearly on-resonance couplings with sparse two-level-system (TLS) defects. To mitigate their impact on qubit coherence and gate performance, one direct …
We have investigated the microwave response of a transmon qubit coupled directly to a transmission line. In a transmon qubit, owing to its weak anharmonicity, a single driving field may generate dressed states involving more than two bare states. We confirmed the formation of three-state dressed states by observing all of the six associated Rabi sidebands, which appear as either amplification or attenuation of the probe field. The experimental results are reproduced with good precision by a theoretical model incorporating the radiative coupling between the qubit and the microwave.
We present a method to encode a \textit{dressed} qubit into the product state of an electron spin localized in quantum dot and its surrounding nuclear spins via a dressing transformation. In this scheme, the hyperfine coupling and a portion of nuclear dipole dipole interaction become logic gates, while they are the sources of decoherence in electron spin qubit proposals. We discuss errors and corrections for the dressed qubits. Interestingly, the effective Hamiltonian of nuclear spins is equivalent to a pairing Hamiltonian, which provides the microscopic mechanism to protect dressed qubits aga…
We propose that Rydberg dressing of a single qubit atom can be used to control a surrounding ensemble of three-level atoms and hereby the phase of light reflected by an optical cavity. Our scheme employs an ensemble dark resonance that is perturbed by the qubit state of a single atom to yield a single-atom single-photon gate. We show here that off-resonant Rydberg dressing of the qubit offers experimentally-viable regimes of operation that drastically reduce error compared to schemes using shelved Rydberg population. Such low errors (in the $10^{-3}$ range) are a necessary condition for fault-…
Using circuit QED, we consider the measurement of a superconducting transmon qubit via a coupled microwave resonator. For ideally dispersive coupling, ringing up the resonator produces coherent states with frequencies matched to transmon energy states. Realistic coupling is not ideally dispersive, however, so transmon-resonator energy levels hybridize into joint eigenstate ladders of the Jaynes-Cummings type. Previous work has shown that ringing up the resonator approximately respects this ladder structure to produce a coherent state in the eigenbasis (a dressed coherent state). We numerically…
The coherent dynamics of relaxing spin qubits driven by a classical bichromatic field comprising a strong resonant component and a weaker component with a frequency close to the strong-field Rabi frequency is studied. The double dressing by the bichromatic field modifies dephasing and dissipation processes. We demonstrate that detuning of the weaker-field frequency from the strong-field Rabi frequency prolongs the decay of Rabi oscillations between some doubly dressed states. The sensitivity of Rabi oscillations to the modified detuning-dependent relaxation is illustrated for nitrogen-vacancy …
We demonstrate amplification of a microwave signal by a strongly driven two-level system in a coplanar waveguide resonator. The effect known from optics as dressed-state lasing is observed with a single quantum system formed by a persistent current (flux) qubit. The transmission through the resonator is enhanced when the Rabi frequency of the driven qubit is tuned into resonance with one of the resonator modes. Amplification as well as linewidth narrowing of a weak probe signal has been observed. The laser emission at the resonator's fundamental mode has been studied by measuring the emission …
We demonstrate a method for preparing and detecting all eigenstates of a three-level microwave dressed system with a single trapped ion. The method significantly reduces the experimental complexity of gate operations with dressed-state qubits, as well as allowing all three of the dressed-states to be prepared and detected, thereby providing access to a qutrit that is well protected from magnetic field noise. In addition, we demonstrate individual addressing of the clock transitions in two ions using a strong static magnetic field gradient, showing that our method can be used to prepare and det…
We study a system consisting of a superconducting flux qubit strongly coupled to a microwave cavity. Externally applied qubit driving is employed in order to manipulate the spectrum of dressed states. We observe resonance narrowing in the region where the splitting between the two dressed fundamental resonances is tuned to zero. The narrowing in this region of overlapping resonances can be exploited for long-time storage of quantum states. In addition, we measure the response to strong cavity mode driving, and find a qualitative deviation between the experimental results and the predictions of…
Coherent dressing of a quantum two-level system provides access to a new quantum system with improved properties - a different and easily tuneable level splitting, faster control, and longer coherence times. In our work we investigate the properties of the dressed, donor-bound electron spin in silicon, and probe its potential for the use as quantum bit in scalable architectures. The two dressed spin-polariton levels constitute a quantum bit that can be coherently driven with an oscillating magnetic field, an oscillating electric field, by frequency modulating the driving field, or by a simple …
We present the first observation of Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interference of the dressed states arising from an artificial atom, a superconducting phase qubit, interacting with a microwave field. The dependence of LZS interference fringes on various external parameters and the initial state of the qubit agrees quantitatively very well with the theoretical prediction. Such LZS interferometry between the dressed states enables us to control the quantum states of a tetrapartite solid-state system with ease, demonstrating the feasibility of implementing efficient multipartite quantum logic g…
We present a new paradigm in the field of cavity QED by bringing out remarkable features associated with the avoided crossing of the dressed state levels of the Jaynes Cummings model. We demonstrate how the parametric couplings, realized by a second order nonlinearity in the cavity, can turn the crossing of dressed states into avoided crossings. We show how one can generate coherence between the avoided crossing of dressed states. Such coherences result, for example, in quantum beats in the excitation probability of the qubit. The quality of quantum beats can be considerably improved by adiaba…
Implementing holonomic quantum computation is a challenging task as it requires complicated interaction among multilevel systems. Here we propose to implement nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation based on dressed-state qubits in circuit QED. An arbitrary holonomic single-qubit gate can be conveniently achieved using external microwave fields and tuning their amplitudes and phases. Meanwhile, nontrivial two-qubit gates can be implemented in a coupled-cavities scenario assisted by a grounding SQUID with tunable interaction, where the tuning is achieved by modulating the ac flux threaded th…
Environmental influences on the dynamics of a coupled qubit-oscillator system are studied analytically. We investigate the case of a quasi-degenerate qubit within the ultra-strong coupling regime for which the qubit frequency is much smaller than the frequency of the oscillator, and the coupling between the qubit and the oscillator is large, both of which invalidate the usually employed rotating wave approximation. In contrast to the standard quantum optics master equation, we explicitly take the qubit-oscillator coupling into account while microscopically deriving a dressed state master equat…
Quantum Compiling Algorithms decompose (exactly, without approximations) an arbitrary $2^\nb$ unitary matrix acting on $\nb$ qubits, into a sequence of elementary operations (SEO). There are many possible ways of decomposing a unitary matrix into a SEO, and some of these decompositions have shorter length (are more efficient) than others. Finding an optimum (shortest) decomposition is a very hard task, and is not our intention here. A less ambitious, more doable task is to find methods for optimizing small segments of a SEO. Call these methods piecewise optimizations. Piecewise optimizations i…
Photon number splitting is observed in a transmon coupled to a superconducting quasi-lumped-element resonator in the strong dispersive limit. A thermal population of 5.474 GHz photons at an effective resonator temperature of T = 120mK results in a weak n = 1 photon peak along with the n = 0 photon peak in the qubit spectrum in the absence of a coherent drive on the resonator. Two-tone spectroscopy using independent coupler and probe tones reveals an Autler-Townes splitting in the thermal n = 1 photon peak. The observed effect is explained accurately using the four lowest levels of the dispersi…
Spin qubits are contenders for scalable quantum computation because of their long coherence times demonstrated in a variety of materials, but individual control by frequency-selective addressing using pulsed spin resonance creates severe technical challenges for scaling up to many qubits. This individual resonance control strategy requires each spin to have a distinguishable frequency, imposing a maximum number of spins that can be individually driven before qubit crosstalk becomes unavoidable. Here we describe a complete strategy for controlling a large array of spins in quantum dots dressed …
We consider the nonstationary circuit QED architecture, where a single artificial two-level atom interacts with a cavity field mode under external modulation of one or more system parameters. Two different approaches are employed to study the effects of Markovian dissipation on modulation-induced transitions between the atom-field dressed states: the standard master equation of Quantum Optics and the recently formulated dressed-picture master equation. We estimate the associated transition rates and show that photon generation from vacuum ("dynamical Casimir effect", DCE) and coherent photon a…
We present an ideal realization of the Tavis-Cummings model in the absence of atom number and coupling fluctuations by embedding a discrete number of fully controllable superconducting qubits at fixed positions into a transmission line resonator. Measuring the vacuum Rabi mode splitting with one, two and three qubits strongly coupled to the cavity field, we explore both bright and dark dressed collective multi-qubit states and observe the discrete square root of N scaling of the collective dipole coupling strength. Our experiments demonstrate a novel approach to explore collective states, such…
In this work, we investigate the quantum phase transition of light in the dissipative Rabi-Hubbard lattice under the framework of the mean-field theory and quantum dressed master equation. The order parameter of photons in strong qubit-photon coupling regime is derived analytically both at zero and low temperatures. Interestingly, we can locate the localization and delocalization phase transition very well in a wide parameter region. {In particular for the zero-temperature limit, the critical tunneling strength approaches zero generally in the deep-strong qubit-photon coupling regime, regardle…
We analyse a system composed of a qubit coupled to electromagnetic fields of two high quality quantum oscillators. Particular realization of such a system is the superconducting qubit coupled to a transmission-line resonator driven by two signals with frequencies close to the resonator's harmonics. One strong signal is used for exciting the system to a high energetic state while the second weak signal is applied for probing effective eigenstates of the system. We demonstrate that a description of the system dynamics as doubly dressed qubit is applicable. Experiments show that in the case of hi…
We investigate the collective radiance characteristics of qubits in the ultrastrong coupling regime, where the radiance witness is defined based on the resonator-qubit dressed basis. The ultrastrong hyperradiance effect is demonstrated when the dressed state of system is resonantly driven. Interestingly, we show that, besides the resonator-qubit coupling strength, the parity-symmetry-breaking induced cascade-transition can significantly enhance the collective radiance of qubits, which allows us to manipulate the transitions between subradiance, superradiance, and hyperradiance via adjusting th…
We propose a set of techniques that enable universal quantum computing to be carried out using dressed states. This applies in particular to the effort of realising quantum computation in trapped ions using long-wavelength radiation, where coupling enhancement is achieved by means of static magnetic-field gradient. We show how the presence of dressing fields enables the construction of robust single and multi-qubit gates despite the unavoidable presence of magnetic noise, an approach that can be generalised to provide shielding in any analogous quantum system that relies on the coupling of ele…
We propose a scheme for continuous detection of itinerant microwave photons in circuit quantum electrodynamics. In the proposed device, a superconducting qubit is coupled dispersively to two resonators: one is used to form an impedance-matched $Λ$ system that deterministically captures incoming photons, and the other is used for continuous monitoring of the event. The present scheme enables efficient photon detection: for realistic system parameters, the detection efficiency reaches 0.9 with a bandwidth of about ten megahertz.
We propose a protocol to realize nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation of small-amplitude Schrödinger cat qubits via invariant-based reverse engineering. We consider a system with a two-photon driven Kerr nonlinearity, which provides a pair of dressed even and odd coherent states, i.e., Schrödinger cat states for fault-tolerant quantum computations. An additional coherent field is applied to linearly drive a cavity mode, to induce oscillations between dressed cat states. By designing this linear drive with invariant-based reverse engineering, nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation wit…
A cavity quantum electrodynamical (QED) system beyond the strong-coupling regime is expected to exhibit intriguing quantum phenomena. Here we report a direct measurement of the photon-dressed qubit transition frequencies up to four photons by harnessing the same type of state transitions in an ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system realized by inductively coupling a superconducting flux qubit to a coplanar-waveguide resonator. This demonstrates a convincing observation of the photon-dressed Bloch-Siegert shift in the ultrastrongly coupled quantum system. Moreover, our results show that the p…
We develop the work of Christandl et al. [M. Christandl, N. Datta, T. C. Dorlas, A. Ekert, A. Kay, and A. J. Landahl, Phys. Rev. A 71, 032312 (2005)], to show how a d-hypercube homogenous network can be dressed by additional links to perfectly route quantum information between any given input and output nodes in a duration which is independent of the routing chosen and, surprisingly, size of the network.
We study the dynamics of a qubit-resonator system, when the resonator is driven by two signals. The interaction of the qubit with the high-amplitude driving we consider in terms of the qubit dressed states. Interaction of the dressed qubit with the second probing signal can essentially change the amplitude of this signal. We calculate the transmission amplitude of the probe signal through the resonator as a function of the qubit's energy and the driving frequency detuning. The regions of increase and attenuation of the transmitted signal are calculated and demonstrated graphically. We present …
We study an architecture for implementing adiabatic quantum computation with trapped neutral atoms. Ground state atoms are dressed by laser fields in a manner conditional on the Rydberg blockade mechanism, thereby providing the requisite entangling interactions. As a benchmark we study the performance of a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem whose solution is found in the ground state spin configuration of an Ising-like model. We model a realistic architecture, including details of the atomic implementation, with qubits encoded into the clock states of 133Cs, effective B…
Implementation of variational Quantum Machine Learning (QML) algorithms on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices is known to have issues related to the high number of qubits needed and the noise associated with multi-qubit gates. In this paper, we propose a variational QML algorithm using a dressed quantum network to address these issues. Using the "super compressed encoding" scheme that we follow here, the classical encoding layer in our dressed network drastically scales down the input-dimension, before feeding the input to the variational quantum circuit. Hence, the number of qubi…
We investigate the dynamics of a strongly-driven, microwave-dressed, donor-bound electron spin qubit in silicon. A resonant oscillating magnetic field $B_1$ is used to dress the electron spin and create a new quantum system with a level splitting proportional to $B_1$. The dressed two-level system can then be driven by modulating the detuning $Δν$ between the microwave source frequency $ν_{\rm MW}$ and the electron spin transition frequency $ν_e$ at the frequency of the level splitting. The resulting dressed qubit Rabi frequency $Ω_{Rρ}$ is defined by the modulation amplitude, which can be mad…

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has usually been demonstrated by using three-level atomic systems. In this paper, we theoretically proposed an efficient method to realize EIT in microwave regime through a coupled system consisting of a flux qubit and a superconducting LC resonator with relatively high quality factor. In the present composed system, the working levels are the dressed states of a two-level flux qubit and the resonators with a probe pump field. There exits a second order coherent transfer between the dressed states. By comparing the results with those in the conven…
Inhomogeneous dephasing from uncontrolled environmental noise can limit the coherence of a quantum sensor or qubit. For solid state spin qubits such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, a dominant source of environmental noise is magnetic field fluctuations due to nearby paramagnetic impurities and instabilities in a magnetic bias field. In this work, we use ac stress generated by a diamond mechanical resonator to engineer a dressed spin basis in which a single NV center qubit is less sensitive to its magnetic environment. For a qubit in the thermally isolated subspace of this prote…
Implementing a scalable quantum information processor using polar molecules in optical lattices requires precise control over the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between molecules in selected lattice sites. We present here a scheme using trapped open-shell $^2Σ$ polar molecules that allows dipolar exchange processes between nearest and next-nearest neighbors to be controlled to construct a generalized transverse Ising spin Hamiltonian with tunable $XX$, $YY$ and $XY$ couplings in the rotating frame of the driving lasers. The scheme requires a moderately strong bias magnetic field with nea…
Readout of the state of a superconducting qubit by homodyne detection of the output signal from a dispersively coupled microwave resonator is a common technique in circuit quantum electrodynamics, and is often claimed to be quantum non-demolition (QND) up to the same order of approximation as in the dispersive approximation. However, in this work we show that only in the limit of infinite measurement time is this protocol QND, as the formation of a dressed coherent state in the qubit-cavity system applies an effective rotation to the qubit state. We show how this rotation can be corrected by a…
Inspired by biological molecular machines we explore the idea of an active quantum robot whose purpose is delaying decoherence. A conceptual model capable of partially protecting arbitrary logical qubit states against single physical qubit errors is presented. Implementation of an instance of that model - the entanglement qubot - is proposed using laser-dressed Rydberg atoms. Dynamics of the system is studied using stochastic wavefunction methods.
We consider soft photons effects (IR structure of QED) on the construction of physical qubits. Soft-photons appear when we build charged qubits from the asymptotic states of QED. This construction is necessary in order to include the effect of soft photons on entanglement measures. The nonexistence of free charged particles (due to the long range of QED interactions) lead us to question the sense of the very concept of free charged qubit. In this letter, using the "dressing" formalism, we build physical charged qubits from dressed fields which have the correct asymptotic behavior, are gauge in…
Cavity quantum electrodynamic (QED) is studied for two strongly-coupled charge qubits interacting with a single-mode quantized field, which is provided by a on-chip transmission line resonator. We analyze the dressed state structure of this superconducting circuit QED system and the selection rules of electromagnetic-induced transitions between any two of these dressed states. Its macroscopic quantum criticality, in the form of ground state level crossing, is also analyzed, resulting from competition between the Ising-type inter-qubit coupling and the controllable on-site potentials.
We demonstrate a trapped-ion entangling-gate scheme proposed by Bermudez et al. [Phys. Rev. A 85, 040302 (2012)]. Simultaneous excitation of a strong carrier and a single-sideband transition enables deterministic creation of entangled states. The method works for magnetic field-insensitive states, is robust against thermal excitations, includes dynamical decoupling from qubit dephasing errors, and provides simplifications in experimental implementation compared to some other entangling gates with trapped ions. We achieve a Bell state fidelity of 0.974(4) and identify the main sources of error.
We give an overview of our recent theoretical studies of the thermodynamics of excitons, and other solid-state qubits, driven by time-dependent laser fields. We consider a single such emitter and describe how the formation of strong-field dressed states allows the emitter to absorb or emit acoustic phonons in a controlled way. We present results for the heat absorption, and show that the form of the driving field can be tailored to produce different thermodynamic processes, including both reversible and irreversible heat absorption. We discuss these effects from the perspective of quantum ther…
