We construct a nearest-neighbor Hamiltonian whose ground states encode the solutions to the NP-complete problem INDEPENDENT SET in cubic planar graphs. The Hamiltonian can be easily simulated by Ising interactions between adjacent particles on a 2D rectangular lattice. We describe the required pulse sequences. Our methods could help to implement adiabatic quantum computing by physically reasonable Hamiltonians like short-range interactions.
The preparation of ground states of spin systems is a fundamental operation in quantum computing and serves as the basis of adiabatic quantum computing. This form of quantum computation is subject to the adiabatic theorem which in turn poses a fundamental speed limit. We show that by employing diabatic transitions via counter diabatic driving a less strict requirement on adiabaticity applies. We demonstrate a scaling advantage from local and multi-spin counter diabatic driving in the ground-state fidelity compared to their adiabatic counterpart, for different Ising spin models.
Physical implementations of quantum computation must be scrutinized about their reliability under real conditions, in order to be considered as viable candidates. Among the proposed models, those based on adiabatic quantum dynamics have shown great potential for solving specific tasks and have already been successfully implemented using superconducting devices. In this context, we address the issue of how the fabrication variations are expected to affect on average the computation results, when only dynamical effects occur. By simulating the dynamics of small-scale systems, it is found a consi…
We show that the NP-hard quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problem on a graph $G$ can be solved using an adiabatic quantum computer that implements an Ising spin-1/2 Hamiltonian, by reduction through minor-embedding of $G$ in the quantum hardware graph $U$. There are two components to this reduction: embedding and parameter setting. The embedding problem is to find a minor-embedding $G^{emb}$ of a graph $G$ in $U$, which is a subgraph of $U$ such that $G$ can be obtained from $G^{emb}$ by contracting edges. The parameter setting problem is to determine the corresponding parame…
The dynamics of a quantum phase transition is inextricably woven with the formation of excitations, as a result of the critical slowing down in the neighborhood of the critical point. We design a transitionless quantum driving through a quantum critical point that allows one to access the ground state of the broken-symmetry phase by a finite-rate quench of the control parameter. The method is illustrated in the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field. Driving through the critical point is assisted by an auxiliary Hamiltonian, for which the interplay between the range of the i…
We propose a nonadiabatic approach to quantum annealing, in which we repeat quantum annealing in nonadiabatic time scales, and collect the final states of many realizations to find the ground state among them. In this way, we replace the diffculty of long annealing time in adiabatic quantum annealing by another problem of the number of nonsidabatic (short-time) trials. The one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model is used to test this idea, and it is shown that nonadiabatic quantum annealing has the same computational complexity to find the ground state as the conventional adiabatic anneali…
For a finite XY chain and a finite two-dimensional Ising lattice, it is shown that the paramagnetic ground state is adiabatically transformed to the GHZ state in the ferromagnetic phase by slowly turning on the magnetic field. The fidelity between the GHZ state and an adiabatically evolved state shows a feature of the quantum phase transition.
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics due to slowly taking a quasiperiodic Hamiltonian across its quantum critical point. The special quasiperiodic Hamiltonian that we study here has two different types of critical lines belonging to two different universality classes, one of them being the well known quantum Ising universality class. In this paper, we verify the Kibble Zurek scaling which predicts a power law scaling of the density of defects generated as a function of the rate of variation of the Hamiltonian. The exponent of this power law is related to the equilibrium critical exponents ass…
We formulate binary optimization functions for single-vehicle routing, travelling salesperson and collision-free multi-vehicle routing with significant improvements in the number of variables over existing formulations. The provided functions are readily implemented on gate-based quantum computers using variational algorithms and on adiabatic quantum hardware.
We illustrate the adiabatic quantum computing solution of the knapsack problem with both integer profits and weights. For problems with $n$ objects (or items) and integer capacity $c$, we give specific examples using both an Ising class problem Hamiltonian requiring $n+c$ qubits and a much more efficient one using $n+[\log_2 c]+1$ qubits. The discussion includes a brief mention of classical algorithms for knapsack, applications of this commonly occurring problem, and the relevance of further studies both theoretically and numerically of the behavior of the energy gap. Included too is a demonst…
Adiabatic gauge potential is the origin of nonadiabatic transitions. In counterdiabatic driving, which is a method of shortcuts to adiabaticity, adiabatic gauge potential can be used to realize identical dynamics to adiabatic time evolution without requiring slow change of parameters. We introduce an algebraic expression of adiabatic gauge potential. Then, we find that the explicit form of adiabatic gauge potential can be easily determined by some algebraic calculations. We demonstrate this method by using a single-spin system, a two-spin system, and the transverse Ising chain. Moreover, we de…
The strategy of shortcuts to adiabaticity enables us to realize adiabatic dynamics in finite time. In the counter-diabatic driving approach, an auxiliary Hamiltonian which is called the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian is appended to an original Hamiltonian to cancel out diabatic transitions. The counter-diabatic Hamiltonian is constructed by using the eigenstates of the original Hamiltonian. Therefore, it is in general difficult to construct the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian for quantum many-body systems. Even if the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian for quantum many-body systems is obtained, it is gen…
Adiabatic processes in the quantum Ising model and the anisotropic Heisenberg model are discussed. The adiabatic processes are assumed to consist in the slow variation of the strength of the magnetic field that environs the spin-systems. These processes are of current interest in the treatment of cold atoms in optical lattices and in Adiabatic Quantum Computation. We determine the probability that, during an adiabatic passage starting from the ground state, states with higher energy are excited.
We discuss how to prepare an Ising chain in a GHZ state using a single global control field only. This model does not require the spins to be individually addressable and is applicable to quantum systems such as cold atoms in optical lattices, some liquid- or solid-state NMR experiments, and many nano-scale quantum structures. We show that GHZ states can always be reached asymptotically from certain easy-to-prepare initial states using adiabatic passage, and under certain conditions finite-time reachability can be ensured. To provide a reference useful for future experimental implementations t…
We introduce a framework for mapping NP-Hard problems to adiabatic quantum computing (AQC) architectures that are heavily restricted in both connectivity and dynamic range of couplings, for which minor-embedding -- the standard problem mapping method -- cannot be directly applied. Separating the mapping into two distinct stages, we introduce problem-specific reductions for both quadratic unconstrained binary optimisation (QUBO) and satisfiability (SAT) and develop the subdivision-embedding method that is suitable for directly embedding onto these heavily restricted architectures. The theory un…
We extend the work of Hen for the Bernstein-Vazirani problem and Simon's problem on an adiabatic quantum computer. Our results are based on the Ising objective function for quantum annealing. For each problem we determine its objective function, describe its Hamiltonian matrix, and show the Hamiltonian matrix for a small problem. Following the pattern of Hen, we discuss factoring of integers, particularly Shor's factoring algorithm in an adiabatic quantum computing environment.
This paper presents a method of computing approximate conservation laws and eigenstates of integrability-broken models using the concept of adiabatic continuation. Given some Hamiltonian, eigenstates and conserved operators may be computed by using those of a simple Hamiltonian close by in parameter space, dressed by some unitary rotation. However, most adiabatic continuation analyses only use this unitary implicitly. In this work, approximate adiabatic gauge potentials are used to construct a state dressing using variational methods, to compute eigenstates via a rotated truncated spectrum app…
Hopfield networks are a variant of associative memory that recall information stored in the couplings of an Ising model. Stored memories are fixed points for the network dynamics that correspond to energetic minima of the spin state. We formulate the recall of memories stored in a Hopfield network using energy minimization by adiabatic quantum optimization (AQO). Numerical simulations of the quantum dynamics allow us to quantify the AQO recall accuracy with respect to the number of stored memories and the noise in the input key. We also investigate AQO performance with respect to how memories …
We present here our study of the adiabatic quantum dynamics of a random Ising chain across its quantum critical point. The model investigated is an Ising chain in a transverse field with disorder present both in the exchange coupling and in the transverse field. The transverse field term is proportional to a function $Γ(t)$ which, as in the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, is linearly reduced to zero in time with a rate $τ^{-1}$, $Γ(t)=-t/τ$, starting at $t=-\infty$ from the quantum disordered phase ($Γ=\infty$) and ending at $t=0$ in the classical ferromagnetic phase ($Γ=0$). We first analyze the dist…
We study the relation between the Ising problem Hamiltonian parameters and the minimum spectral gap (min-gap) of the system Hamiltonian in the Ising-based quantum annealer. The main argument we use in this paper to assess the performance of a QA algorithm is the presence or absence of an anti-crossing during quantum evolution. For this purpose, we introduce a new parametrization definition of the anti-crossing. Using the Maximum-weighted Independent Set (MIS) problem in which there are flexible parameters (energy penalties J between pairs of edges) in an Ising formulation as the model problem,…
We derive exact closed-form expressions for several sums leading to hyperbolic functions and discuss their applicability for studies of finite-size Ising spin chains. We show how they immediately lead to closed-form expressions for both fidelity susceptibility characterizing the quantum critical point and the coefficients of the counterdiabatic Hamiltonian enabling arbitrarily quick adiabatic driving of the system. Our results generalize and extend the sums presented in the popular Gradshteyn and Ryzhik Table of Integrals, Series, and Products.
The present paper finds the complete set of exact solutions of the general time-dependent dynamical models for quantum decoherence, by making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation. Based on this, the general explicit expression for the decoherence factor is then obtained and the adiabatic classical limit of an illustrative example is discussed. The result (i.e., the adiabatic classical limit) obtained in this paper is consistent with what obtained by other authors, and futhermore we obtain the more general results concerning t…
We propose a physical setup that can be used to simulate the quantum dynamics of the Ising model with present-day technology. Our scheme consists of electrons floating on superfluid helium which interact via Coulomb forces. In the limit of low temperatures, the system will stay near the ground state where its Hamiltonian is equivalent to the Ising model and thus shows phenomena such as quantum criticality. Furthermore, the proposed design could be generalized in order to study interacting field theories (e.g., $λϕ^4$) and adiabatic quantum computers.
Driving a homogeneous system across a quantum phase transition in a quench-time $τ_Q$ generates excitations on wavelengths longer than the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) length $\hatξ\proptoτ_Q^{ν/(1+zν)}$ within the KZ time window $\hat t\proptoτ_Q^{zν/(1+zν)}$, where $z$ and $ν$ are the critical exponents. Quenches designed with local time-dependent inhomogeneity can introduce a gap in the spectrum. For a variety of setups with short-range interactions, they have been shown to suppress excitations if the spatial velocity of the inhomogenous front is below the characteristic KZ velocity $\hat v \propto \h…
Designing proper time-dependent control fields for slowly varying the system to the ground state that encodes the problem solution is crucial for adiabatic quantum computation. However, inevitable perturbations in real applications demand us to accelerate the evolution so that the adiabatic errors can be prevented from accumulation. Here, by treating this trade-off task as a multiobjective optimization problem, we propose a gradient-free learning algorithm with pulse smoothing technique to search optimal adiabatic quantum pathways and apply it to the Landau-Zener Hamiltonian and Grover search …
We explore the possibility of implementing a Heisenberg-limited Mach-Zehnder interferometry via an array of trapped ions, which obey a quantum Ising model within a transverse field. Based upon adiabatic processes of increasing the Ising interaction and then decreasing the transverse field, we demonstrate a perfect transition from paramagnetism to ferromagnetic states, which can be used as the beam splitter for the multi-ion Mach-Zehnder interferometry. The achieved NOON state of the ions enables the Heisenberg-limited interferometry. Using currently available techniques for ultracold ions, we …
The shift of interest from general purpose quantum computers to adiabatic quantum computing or quantum annealing calls for a broadly applicable and easy to implement test to assess how quantum or adiabatic is a specific hardware. Here we propose such a test based on an exactly solvable many body system -- the quantum Ising chain in transverse field -- and implement it on the D-Wave machine. An ideal adiabatic quench of the quantum Ising chain should lead to an ordered broken symmetry ground state with all spins aligned in the same direction. An actual quench can be imperfect due to decoherence…
We use local adiabatic evolution to experimentally create and determine the ground state spin ordering of a fully-connected Ising model with up to 14 spins. Local adiabatic evolution -- in which the system evolution rate is a function of the instantaneous energy gap -- is found to maximize the ground state probability compared with other adiabatic methods while only requiring knowledge of the lowest $\sim N$ of the $2^N$ Hamiltonian eigenvalues. We also demonstrate that the ground state ordering can be experimentally identified as the most probable of all possible spin configurations, even whe…
We study the Ising Hamiltonian with a transverse field term to simulate the quantum annealing. Using shortcuts to adiabaticity, we design the time dependence of the Hamiltonian. The dynamical invariant is obtained by the mean-field ansatz, and the Hamiltonian is designed by the inverse engineering. We show that the time dependence of physical quantities such as the magnetization is independent of the speed of the Hamiltonian variation in the infinite-range model. We also show that rotating transverse magnetic fields are useful to achieve the ideal time evolution.
Shortcuts to adiabaticity are well-known methods for controlling the quantum dynamics beyond the adiabatic criteria, where counter-diabatic (CD) driving provides a promising means to speed up quantum many-body systems. In this work, we show the applicability of CD driving to enhance the digitized adiabatic quantum computing paradigm in terms of fidelity and total simulation time. We study the state evolution of an Ising spin chain using the digitized version of the standard CD driving and its variants derived from the variational approach. We apply this technique in the preparation of Bell and…
It was recently shown that, for solving NP-complete problems, adiabatic paths always exist without finite-order perturbative crossings between local and global minima, which could lead to anticrossings with exponentially small energy gaps if present. However, it was not shown whether such a path could be found easily. Here, we give a simple construction that deterministically eliminates all such anticrossings in polynomial time, space, and energy, for any Ising models with polynomial final gap. Thus, in order for adiabatic quantum optimization to require exponential time to solve any NP-comple…
In [R. Jozsa, B. Kraus, A. Miyake, J. Watrous, Proc. R. Soc. A {\bf 466}, 809-830 (2010)] it has been shown that a match gate circuit running on n qubits can be compressed to a universal quantum computation on \log(n)+3 qubits. Here, we show how this compression can be employed to simulate the Ising interaction of a 1D--chain consisting out of n qubits using a universal quantum computer running on log(n) qubits. We demonstrate how the adiabatic evolution can be realized on this exponentially smaller system and how the magnetization, which shows a quantum phase transition, can be measured.
We perform a quantum simulation of the Ising model with a transverse field using a collection of three trapped atomic ion spins. By adiabatically manipulating the Hamiltonian, we directly probe the ground state for a wide range of fields and form of the Ising couplings, leading to a phase diagram of magnetic order in this microscopic system. The technique is scalable to much larger numbers of trapped ion spins, where phase transitions approaching the thermodynamic limit can be studied in cases where theory becomes intractable.
An algebraic method has been developed which allows one to engineer several energy levels including the low-energy subspace of interacting spin systems. By introducing ancillary qubits, this approach allows k-body interactions to be captured exactly using 2-body Hamiltonians. Our method works when all terms in the Hamiltonian share the same basis and has no dependence on perturbation theory or the associated large spectral gap. Our methods allow problem instance solutions to be embedded into the ground energy state of Ising spin systems. Adiabatic evolution might then be used to place a comput…
For the prototypical example of the Ising chain in a transverse field, we study the impact of decoherence on the sweep through a second-order quantum phase transition. Apart from the advance in the general understanding of the dynamics of quantum phase transitions, these findings are relevant for adiabatic quantum algorithms due to the similarities between them. It turns out that (in contrast to first-order transitions studied previously) the impact of decoherence caused by a weak coupling to a rather general environment increases with system size (i.e., number of spins/qubits), which might li…
A two-dimensional array of Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators (KPOs) with local four-body interactions is a promising candidate for realizing an Ising machine with all-to-all spin couplings, based on adiabatic quantum computation in the Lechner-Hauke-Zoller (LHZ) scheme. However its performance has been evaluated for only a few KPOs. By numerically simulating more KPOs, here we show that the performance can be dramatically improved by reducing inhomogeneity in photon numbers induced by the four-body interactions. The discrepancies of the photon numbers can be corrected by tuning the detunin…
The ferromagnetic state of an Ising chain can represent a two-fold degenerate subspace or equivalently a logical qubit which is protected from excitations by an energy gap. We study a a braiding-like exchange operation through the movement of the state in the qubit subspace which resembles that of the localized edge modes in a Kitaev chain. The system consists of two Ising chains in a 1D geometry where the operation is simulated through the adiabatic time evolution of the ground state. The time evolution is implemented via the Suzuki-Trotter expansion on basic single- and two-qubit quantum gat…
The system undergoes adiabatic evolution when its population in the instantaneous eigenbasis of its time-dependent Hamiltonian changes only negligibly. Realization of such dynamics requires slow-enough changes of the parameters of the Hamiltonian, a task that can be hard to achieve near quantum critical points. A powerful alternative is provided by the counterdiabatic modification of the Hamiltonian allowing for an arbitrarily quick implementation of the adiabatic dynamics. Such a counterdiabatic driving protocol has been recently proposed for the quantum Ising model [A. del Campo et al., Phys…
Energy minimization of Ising spin-glasses has played a central role in statistical and solid-state physics, facilitating studies of phase transitions and magnetism. Recent proposals suggest using Ising spin-glasses for non-traditional computing as a way to harness the nature's ability to find min-energy configurations, and to take advantage of quantum tunneling to boost combinatorial optimization. Laboratory demonstrations have been unconvincing so far and lack a non-quantum baseline for definitive comparisons. In this work we (i) design and evaluate new computational techniques to simulate na…
The critical quantum metrology, which exploits the quantum phase transition for high precision measurement, has gained increasing attention recently. The critical quantum metrology with the continuous quantum phase transition, however, is experimentally very challenging since the continuous quantum phase transition only exists at the thermal dynamical limit. Here, we propose an adiabatic scheme on a perturbed Ising spin model with the first order quantum phase transition. By employing the Landau-Zener anticrossing, we can not only encode the unknown parameter in the ground state but also tune …
Adiabatic quantum computing is an analog quantum computing scheme with various applications in solving optimization problems. In the parity picture of quantum optimization, the problem is encoded in local fields that act on qubits which are connected via local 4-body terms. We present an implementation of a parity annealer with Transmon qubits with a specifically tailored Ising interaction from Josephson ring modulators.
We show how to apply the quantum adiabatic algorithm directly to the quantum computation of molecular properties. We describe a procedure to map electronic structure Hamiltonians to 2-local qubit Hamiltonians with a small set of physically realizable couplings. By combining the Bravyi-Kitaev construction to map fermions to qubits with perturbative gadgets to reduce the Hamiltonian to 2-local, we obtain precision requirements on the coupling strengths and a number of ancilla qubits that scale polynomially in the problem size. Hence our mapping is efficient. The required set of controllable inte…
We propose a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm for non-equilibrium dynamics in a system with a parameter varying as a function of time. The method is based on successive applications of an evolving Hamiltonian to an initial state and delivers results for a whole range of the tuning parameter in a single run, allowing for access to both static and dynamic properties of the system. This approach reduces to the standard Schrödinger dynamics in imaginary time for quasi-adiabatic evolutions, i.e., including the leading non-adiabatic correction to the adiabatic limit. We here demonstrate this quas…
We develop a scheme of fast forward of adiabatic spin dynamics of quantum entangled states. We settle the quasi-adiabatic dynamics by adding the regularization terms to the original Hamiltonian and then accelerate it with use of a large time-scaling factor. Assuming the experimentally-realizable candidate Hamiltonian consisting of the exchange interactions and magnetic field, we solved the regularization terms. These terms multiplied by the velocity function give rise to the state-dependent counter-diabatic terms. The scheme needs neither knowledge of full spectral properties of the system nor…
We propose a method to speed up the quantum adiabatic algorithm using catalysis by many-body delocalization. This is applied to random-field antiferromagnetic Ising spin models. The algorithm is catalyzed in such a way that the evolution approximates a Heisenberg model in the middle of its course, and the model is in a delocalized phase. We show numerically that we can speed up the standard algorithm for finding the ground state of the random-field Ising model using this idea. We also demonstrate that the speedup is due to gap amplification, even though the underlying model is not frustration-…
Adiabatic quantum computing enables the preparation of many-body ground states. This is key for applications in chemistry, materials science, and beyond. Realisation poses major experimental challenges: Direct analog implementation requires complex Hamiltonian engineering, while the digitised version needs deep quantum gate circuits. To bypass these obstacles, we suggest an adiabatic variational hybrid algorithm, which employs short quantum circuits and provides a systematic quantum adiabatic optimisation of the circuit parameters. The quantum adiabatic theorem promises not only the ground sta…
We study quantum annealing of pure and random transverse Ising chains that are coupled to boson baths, using a novel numerical method based on the combination of the quasi-adiabatic propagation path integral (QUAPI) and the matrix product state (MPS) formalisms. We present numerical results on systems up to 64 spins and conclude that the baths disturb quantum annealing of pure and random Ising chains. The numerical method to compute the reduced density matrix is described in detail.
The goal of this paper is to introduce building blocks for adiabatic quantum algorithms. Adiabatic quantum computing uses the principle of quantum annealing, which implies that a carefully controlled energy solution is optimal and corresponds to minimizing a discrete function. The input function can be influenced by rewards and penalties to favor a solution that meets restrictions that are imposed by the problem. We show how to accomplish this influence for gates in adiabatic quantum computing, particularly the controlled-NOT gate (CNOT gate) which is fundamental to all quantum gates on two or…
The viability of non-stoquastic catalyst Hamiltonians to deliver consistent quantum speedups in quantum adiabatic optimization remains an open question. The infinite-range ferromagnetic $p$-spin model is a rare example exhibiting an exponential advantage for non-stoquastic catalysts over its stoquastic counterpart. We revisit this model and note how the incremental changes in the ground state wavefunction give an indication of how the non-stoquastic catalyst provides an advantage. We then construct two new examples that exhibit an advantage for non-stoquastic catalysts over stoquastic catalyst…
It has been established that local lattice spin Hamiltonians can be used for universal adiabatic quantum computation. However, the 2-local model Hamiltonians used in these proofs are general and hence do not limit the types of interactions required between spins. To address this concern, the present paper provides two simple model Hamiltonians that are of practical interest to experimentalists working towards the realization of a universal adiabatic quantum computer. The model Hamiltonians presented are the simplest known QMA-complete 2-local Hamiltonians. The 2-local Ising model with 1-local …
