In this paper we consider limit theorems, symmetry of distribution, and absorption problems for two types of one-dimensional quantum random walks determined by 2 times 2 unitary matrices using our PQRS method. The one type was introduced by Gudder in 1988, and the other type was studied intensively by Ambainis et al. in 2001. The difference between both types of quantum random walks is also clarified.
This paper treats absorption problems for the one-dimensional quantum walk determined by a 2 times 2 unitary matrix U on a state space {0,1,...,N} where N is finite or infinite by using a new path integral approach based on an orthonormal basis P, Q, R and S of the vector space of complex 2 times 2 matrices. Our method studied here is a natural extension of the approach in the classical random walk.
Quantum walks are known to have nontrivial interaction with absorbing boundaries. In particular, Ambainis et.\ al.\ \cite{ambainis01} showed that in the $(\Z ,C_1,H)$ quantum walk (one-dimensional Hadamard walk) an absorbing boundary partially reflects information. These authors also conjectured that the left absorption probabilities $P_n^{(1)}(1,0)$ related to the finite absorbing Hadamard walks $(\Z ,C_1,H,\{ 0,n\} )$ satisfy a linear fractional recurrence in $n$ (here $P_n(1,0)$ is the probability that a Hadamard walk particle initialized in $|1\rangle |R\rangle$ is eventually absorbed at $…
In this paper we analyze the behavior of quantum random walks. In particular we present several new results for the absorption probabilities in systems with both one and two absorbing walls for the one-dimensional case. We compute these probabilites both by employing generating functions and by use of an eigenfunction approach. The generating function method is used to determine some simple properties of the walks we consider, but appears to have limitations. The eigenfunction approach works by relating the problem of absorption to a unitary problem that has identical dynamics inside a certain…
Let p_j^(n) be the probability that a Hadamard quantum walk, started at site j on the integer lattice {0,...,n}, is absorbed at 0. We give an explicit formula for p_j^(n). Our formula proves a conjecture of John Watrous, concerning an empirically observed linear fractional recurrence relation for the numbers p_1^(n).
There has recently been considerable interest in quantum walks in connection with quantum computing. The walk can be considered as a quantum version of the so-called correlated random walk. We clarify a strong structural similarity between both walks and study limit theorems and absorption problems for correlated random walks by our PQRS method, which was used in our analysis of quantum walks.
We consider 2-state quantum walks (QWs) on the line, which are defined by two matrices. One of the matrices operates the walk at only half-time. In the usual QWs, localization does not occur at all. However, our walk can be localized around the origin. In this paper, we present two limit theorems, that is, one is a stationary distribution and the other is a convergence theorem in distribution.
Quantum walks are known to have nontrivial interactions with absorbing boundaries. In particular it has been shown that an absorbing boundary in the one dimensional quantum walk partially reflects information, as observed by absorption probability computations. In this paper, we shift our sights from the local phenomena of absorption probabilities to the global behavior of finite absorbing quantum walks in one dimension. We conduct our analysis by approximating the eigenbasis of the associated absorbing quantum walk operator matrix Q_n where n is the lattice size. The conditional probability d…
We study time-dependent discrete-time quantum walks on the one-dimensional lattice. We compute the limit distribution of a two-period quantum walk defined by two orthogonal matrices. For the symmetric case, the distribution is determined by one of two matrices. Moreover, limit theorems for two special cases are presented.
The method of the quantum probability theory only requires simple structural data of graph and allows us to avoid a heavy combinational argument often necessary to obtain full description of spectrum of the adjacency matrix. In the present paper, by using the idea of calculation of the probability amplitudes for continuous-time quantum walk in terms of the quantum probability theory, we investigate quantum central limit theorem for continuous-time quantum walks on odd graphs.
Recently Mc Gettrick [1] introduced and studied a discrete-time 2-state quantum walk (QW) with a memory in one dimension. He gave an expression for the amplitude of the QW by path counting method. Moreover he showed that the return probability of the walk is more than 1/2 for any even time. In this paper, we compute the stationary distribution by considering the walk as a 4-state QW without memory. Our result is consistent with his claim. In addition, we obtain the weak limit theorem of the rescaled QW. This behavior is striking different from the corresponding classical random walk and the us…
We obtain some rigorous results on limit theorems for quantum walks driven by many coins introduced by Brun et al. in the long time limit. The results imply that whether the behavior of a particle is quantum or classical depends on the three factors: the initial qubit, the number of coins M, d= [t/M], where t is time step. Our main theorem shows that we can see a transition from classical behavior to quantum one for a class of three factors.
Concerning a discrete-time quantum walk X^{(d)}_t with a symmetric distribution on the line, whose evolution is described by the Hadamard transformation, it was proved by the author that the following weak limit theorem holds: X^{(d)}_t /t \to dx / π(1-x^2) \sqrt{1 - 2 x^2} as t \to \infty. The present paper shows that a similar type of weak limit theorems is satisfied for a {\it continuous-time} quantum walk X^{(c)}_t on the line as follows: X^{(c)}_t /t \to dx / π\sqrt{1 - x^2} as t \to \infty. These results for quantum walks form a striking contrast to the central limit theorem for symmetri…
We consider a discrete-time quantum walk W_t given by the Grover transformation on the Cayley tree. We reduce W_t to a quantum walk X_t on a half line with a wall at the origin. This paper presents two types of limit theorems for X_t. The first one is X_t as t\to\infty, which corresponds to a localization in the case of an initial qubit state. The second one is X_t/t as t\to\infty, whose limit density is given by the Konno density function [1-4]. The density appears in various situations of discrete-time cases. The corresponding similar limit theorem was proved in [5] for a continuous-time cas…
In this work, we study open quantum random walks, as described by S. Attal et al. These objects are given in terms of completely positive maps acting on trace-class operators, leading to one of the simplest open quantum versions of the recurrence problem for classical, discrete-time random walks. This work focuses on obtaining criteria for site recurrence of nearest-neighbor, homogeneous walks on the integer line, with the description presented here making use of recent results of the theory of open walks, most particularly regarding reducibility properties of the operators involved. This allo…
We present two long-time limit theorems of a 3-state quantum walk on the line when the walker starts from the origin. One is a limit measure which is obtained from the probability distribution of the walk at a long-time limit, and the other is a convergence in distribution for the walker's position in a rescaled space by time. In addition, as an application of the walk, we obtain discrete uniform limit measures from the 3-state walk with a delocalized initial state.
We consider the Grover walk as a 4-state quantum walk without memory in one dimension. The walker in our 4-state quantum walk moves to the left or right. We compute the stationary distribution of the walk, in addition, we obtain the weak limit theorem
We study the discrete-time quantum walk in one-dimension governed by the Fibonacci transformation .We show localization does not occur for the Fibonacci quantum walk by investigating the stationary distribution of the walk, in addition, we obtain the weak limit theorem.
The conventional spectral mapping theorem for quantum walks can only be applied for walks employing a shift operator whose square is the identity. This theorem gives most of the eigenvalues of the time evolution $U$ by lifting the eigenvalues of an induced self-adjoint matrix $T$ onto the unit circle on the complex plane. We acquire a new spectral mapping theorem for the Grover walk with a shift operator whose cube is the identity on finite graphs. Moreover, graphs we can consider for a quantum walk with such a shift operator is characterized by a triangulation. We call these graphs triangulab…
We extend the construction given by [Chisaki et.al, arXiv:1009.1306v1] from lines to planes, and obtain the associated limit theorems for quantum walks on such a graph.
We obtain a structure theorem of the positive support of the $n$-th power of the Grover walk on $k$-regular graph whose girth is greater than $2(n-1)$. This structure theorem is provided by the parity of the amplitude of another quantum walk on the line which depends only on $k$. The phase pattern of this quantum walk has a curious regularity. We also exactly show how the spectrum of the $n$-th power of the Grover walk is obtained by lifting up that of the adjacency matrix to the complex plain.
Since a limit distribution of a discrete-time quantum walk on the line was derived in 2002, a lot of limit theorems for quantum walks with a localized initial state have been reported. On the other hand, in quantum probability theory, there are four notions of independence (free, monotone, commuting, and boolean independence) and quantum central limit theorems associated to each independence have been investigated. The relation between quantum walks and quantum probability theory is still unknown. As random walks are fundamental models in the Kolmogorov probability theory, can the quantum walk…
The discrete-time quantum walk (QW) is determined by a unitary matrix whose component is complex number. Konno (2015) extended the QW to a walk whose component is quaternion. We call this model quaternionic quantum walk (QQW). The probability distribution of a class of QQWs is the same as that of the QW. On the other hand, a numerical simulation suggests that the probability distribution of a QQW is different from the QW. In this paper, we clarify the difference between the QQW and the QW by weak limit theorems for a class of QQWs.
We consider a discrete-time 2-state quantum walk on the line. The state of the quantum walker evolves according to a rule which is determined by a coin-flip operator and a position-shift operator. In this paper we take a 3-periodic time evolution as the rule. For such a quantum walk, we get a limit distribution which expresses the asymptotic behavior of the walker after a long time. The limit distribution is different from that of a time-independent quantum walk or a 2-period time-dependent quantum walk. We give some analytical results and then consider a number of variants of our model and in…
In this article, we undertake a detailed study of the limiting behavior of a three-state discrete-time quantum walk on one dimensional lattice with generalized Grover coins. Two limit theorems are proved and consequently we show that the quantum walk exhibits localization at its initial position, for a wide range of coin parameters. Finally, we discuss the effect of the coin parameters on the peak velocities of probability distributions of the underlying quantum walks.
We give a new elementary proof of the theorem by Ambainis et al. that for a quantum walk, the probability amplitudes of absorption at the initial point after 4n steps are proportional to the Catalan numbers. We also calculate the absorption probabilities at points close to the initial one for the first time.
The probability distributions of discrete-time quantum walks have been often investigated, and many interesting properties of them have been discovered. The probability that the walker can be find at a position is defined by diagonal elements of the density matrix. On the other hand, although off-diagonal parts of the density matrices have an important role to quantify quantumness, they have not received attention in quantum walks. We focus on the off-diagonal parts of the density matrices for discrete-time quantum walks on the line and derive limit theorems for them.
We consider the limit distributions of open quantum random walks on one-dimensional lattice space. We introduce a dual process to the original quantum walk process, which is quite similar to the relation of Schrödinger-Heisenberg representation in quantum mechanics. By this, we can compute the distribution of the open quantum random walks concretely for many examples and thereby we can also obtain the limit distributions of them. In particular, it is possible to get rid of the initial state when we consider the evolution of the walk, it appears only in the last step of the computation.
We discuss the description of eigenspace of a quantum walk model $U$ with an associating linear operator $T$ in abstract settings of quantum walk including the Szegedy walk on graphs. In particular, we provide the spectral mapping theorem of $U$ without the spectral decomposition of $T$. Arguments in this direction reveal the eigenspaces of $U$ characterized by the generalized kernels of linear operators given by $T$.
In this paper we consider the model with decoherence operators introduced by [Brun,T.A, et.al, Phys.Rev.A 67 (2003) 032304] which has recently been considered in the two-dimensional setting by [Ampadu,C., Brun-Type Formalism for Decoherence in Two Dimensional Quantum Walks, Communication in Theoretical Physics To Appear, arXiv:1104.2061 (2011)] to obtain the limit of the decoherent quantum walk.
Split-step quantum walks are models of supersymmetric quantum walk, and thus their Witten indices can be defined. We prove that the Witten index of a split-step quantum walk coincides with the difference between the winding numbers of functions corresponding to the right-limit of coins and the left-limit of coins. As a corollary, we give an alternative derivation of the index formula for split-step quantum walks, which is recently obtained by Suzuki and Tanaka.
We study a one-parameter family of discrete-time quantum walk models on the line and in the xy-plane associated with the Hadamard walk. Weak convergence in the long-time limit of all moments of the walker's pseudo-velocity on the line and in the xy-plane is proved. Symmetrization on the line and in the xy-plane is theoretically investigated, leading to the resolution of the Konno-Namiki-Soshi conjecture in the special case of symmetrization of the unbiased Hadamard walk on the line . A necessary condition for the existence of a phenomenon known as localization is given.
In this work we aim at proving central limit theorems for open quantum walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We study the case when there are various classes of vertices in the network. Furthermore, we investigate two ways of distributing the vertex classes in the network. First we assign the classes in a regular pattern. Secondly, we assign each vertex a random class with a uniform distribution. For each way of distributing vertex classes, we obtain an appropriate central limit theorem, illustrated by numerical examples. These theorems may have application in the study of complex systems in quantum biolog…
Discrete-time quantum walks are considered a counterpart of random walks and the study for them has been getting attention since around 2000. In this paper, we focus on a quantum walk which generates a probability distribution splitting to two parts. The quantum walker with two coin states spreads at points, represented by integers, and we analyze the chance of finding the walker at each position after it carries out a unitary evolution a lot of times. The result is reported as a long-time limit distribution from which one can see an approximation to the finding probability.
Open Quantum Walks (OQWs), originally introduced by S. Attal, are quantum generalizations of classical Markov chains. Recently, natural continuous time models of OQW have been developed by C. Pellegrini. These models, called Continuous Time Open Quantum Walks (CTOQWs), appear as natural continuous time limits of discrete time OQWs. In particular they are quantum extensions of continuous time Markov chains. This article is devoted to the study of homogeneous CTOQW on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We focus namely on their associated quantum trajectories which allow us to prove a Central Limit Theorem for the …
