We develop a computation model for solving Boolean networks that implements wires through quantum ground-state computation and implements gates through identities following from angular momentum algebra and statistics. The gates are static in the sense that they contribute Hamiltonian 0 and hold as constants of the motion; only the wires are dynamic. Just as a spin 1/2 makes an ideal 1-bit memory element, a spin 1 makes an ideal 3-bit gate. Such gates cost no computation time: relaxing the wires alone solves the network. We compare computation time with that of an easier Boolean network where all the gate constraints are simply removed. This computation model is robust with respect to decoherence and yields a generalized quantum speed-up for all NP problems.
Entangling operations are among the most important primitive gates employed in quantum computing and it is crucial to ensure high-fidelity implementations as systems are scaled up. We experimentally realize and characterize a simple scheme to minimize errors in entangling operations related to the residual excitation of mediating bosonic oscillator modes that both improves gate robustness and provides scaling benefits in larger systems. The technique employs discrete phase shifts in the control field driving the gate operation, determined either analytically or numerically, to ensure all modes…
A dynamics regime of Rydberg atoms, unselective ground-state blockade (UGSB), is proposed in the context of Rydberg antiblockade (RAB), where the evolution of two atoms is suppressed when they populate in an identical ground state. UGSB is used to implement a SWAP gate in one step without individual addressing of atoms. Aiming at circumventing common issues in RAB-based gates including atomic decay, Doppler dephasing, and fluctuations in the interatomic coupling strength, we modify the RAB condition to achieve a dynamical SWAP gate whose robustness is much greater than that of the nonadiabatic…
For neutral atom qubits, the two-qubit gate is typically realized via the Rydberg blockade effect, which hints about the special status of the Rydberg level besides the regular qubit register states. Here, we carry out experimental and theoretical studies to reveal how the ground-Rydberg coherence of the control qubit atom affects the process of two-qubit Controlled-Z ($C_Z$) gate, such as the commonly used ground-Rydberg $π$-gap-$π$ pulse sequence originally proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{85}, 2208 (2000). We measure the decoherence of the control qubit atom after the $π$-gap-$π$ pulses…
A key goal of digital quantum computing is the simulation of fermionic systems such as molecules or the Hubbard model. Unfortunately, for present and near-future quantum computers the use of quantum error correction schemes is still out of reach. Hence, the finite error rate limits the use of quantum computers to algorithms with a low number of gates. The variational Hamiltonian ansatz (VHA) has been shown to produce the ground state in good approximation in a manageable number of steps. Here we study explicitly the effect of gate errors on its performance. The VHA is inspired by the adiabatic…

Conditional multi-qubit gates are a key component for elaborate quantum algorithms. In a recent work, Rasmussen et al. (Phys. Rev. A 101, 022308) proposed an efficient single-step method for a prototypical multi-qubit gate, a Toffoli gate, based on a combination of Ising interactions between control qubits and an appropriate driving field on a target qubit. Trapped ions are a natural platform to implement this method, since Ising interactions mediated by phonons have been demonstrated in increasingly large ion crystals. However, the simultaneous application of these interactions and the drivin…
Superconducting qubits on a circuit exhibit an always-on state-dependent phase error. This error is due to sub-MHz parasitic interaction that repels computational levels from non-computational ones. We study a general theory to evaluate the `static' repulsion between seemingly idle qubits as well as the `dynamical' repulsion between entangled qubits under microwave driving gate. By combining qubits of either the same or opposite anharmonicity signs we find the characteristics of static and dynamical ZZ freedoms. The latter universally eliminate the parasitic repulsion, leading us to mitigate h…
Quantum computation requires the precise control of the evolution of a quantum system, typically through application of discrete quantum logic gates on a set of qubits. Here, we use the cross-resonance interaction to implement a gate between two superconducting transmon qubits with a direct static dispersive coupling. We demonstrate a practical calibration procedure for the optimization of the gate, combining continuous and repeated-gate Hamiltonian tomography with step-wise reduction of dominant two-qubit coherent errors through mapping to microwave control parameters. We show experimentally …
One of the main challenges in building a quantum processor is to characterize the environmental noise. Noise characterization can be achieved by exploiting different techniques, such as randomization where several sequences of random quantum gates are applied to the qubit under test to derive statistical characteristics about the affecting noises. A scalable and robust algorithm able to benchmark the full set of Clifford gates using randomization techniques is called randomized benchmarking. In this study, we simulated randomized benchmarking protocols in a semiconducting all-electrical three-…
Inevitable interactions with the reservoir largely degrade the performance of non-local gates, which hinders practical quantum computation from coming into existence. Here we experimentally demonstrate a 99.920(7)\%-fidelity controlled-NOT gate by suppressing the complicated noise in a solid-state spin system at room temperature. We found that the fidelity limited at 99\% in previous works results from only considering static noise, and thus, in this work, time-dependent noise and quantum noise are also included. All noises are dynamically corrected by an exquisitely designed shaped pulse, giv…
High-fidelity two-qubit gates in quantum computers are often hampered by fluctuating experimental parameters. The effects of time-varying parameter fluctuations lead to coherent noise on the qubits, which can be suppressed by designing control signals with appropriate filter functions. Here, we develop filter functions for Mølmer-Sørensen gates of trapped-ion quantum computers that accurately predict the change in gate error due to small parameter fluctuations at any frequency. We then design the filter functions of frequency-modulated laser pulses, and compare this method with pulses that are…
High-fidelity manipulation is the key for the physical realization of fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, we present a protocol to realize universal nonadiabatic geometric gates for silicon-based spin qubits. We find that the advantage of geometric gates over dynamical gates depends crucially on the evolution loop for the construction of the geometric phase. Under appropriate evolution loops, both the geometric single-qubit gates and the CNOT gate can outperform their dynamical counterparts for both systematic and detuning noises. We also perform randomized benchmarking using noise ampli…
We implemented arbitrary single qubit gates of geometric quantum computing for a three-level system in a single-shot manner. The evolution time of the gate has been minimized by considering the shortest trajectory of the state on the Bloch sphere. The duration of gates grows from zero with the rotation angle $γ$, and the tested T gate time can be reduced to $\sim$40\% of those in the traditional orange-sliced-shaped path non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computing (NHQC) scheme by the parametrization of Rabi frequency. We also demonstrated that certain pulses are robust against static detuning e…

We characterize the energetic footprint of a two-qubit quantum gate from the perspective of non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics. We experimentally reconstruct the statistics of energy and entropy fluctuations following the implementation of a controlled-unitary gate, linking them to the performance of the gate itself and the phenomenology of Landauer principle at the single-quantum level. Our work thus addresses the energetic cost of operating quantum circuits, a problem that is crucial for the grounding of the upcoming quantum technologies.
We present two techniques that can greatly reduce the number of gates required to realize an energy measurement, with application to ground state preparation in quantum simulations. The first technique realizes that to prepare the ground state of some Hamiltonian, it is not necessary to implement the time-evolution operator: any unitary operator which is a function of the Hamiltonian will do. We propose one such unitary operator which can be implemented exactly, circumventing any Taylor or Trotter approximation errors. The second technique is tailored to lattice models, and is targeted at redu…
With a resonant amplitude-modulation field on two Rydberg atoms, we propose a Rydberg antiblockade (RAB) regime, where the Rabi oscillation between collective ground and excited states is induced. A controlled-Z gate can be yielded through a Rabi cycle. Further, several common issues of the RAB gates are solved by modifying the parameter relation. The gate fidelity and the gate robustness against the control error are enhanced with a shaped pulse. The requirement of control precision of the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction strength is relaxed. In addition, the atomic excitation is restrained and th…
Recently, the notion of two-qubit controlled phase gate via off-resonant modulated driving has been introduced into the neutral atom qubit platform, with respect to both single-photon and two-photon ground-Rydberg transitions. In order to reach a better performance practically, further developments are in need to overcome a few known limitations in previous discussions of this promising method. Here, we thoroughly analyze a variety of modulation styles for two-photon transitions, demonstrating the versatility of off-resonant modulated driving protocols. Furthermore, we show that it is possible…
