We derive semiclassical quantization conditions for systems with spin. To this end one has to define the notion of integrability for the corresponding classical system which is given by a combination of the translational motion and classical spin precession. We determine the geometry of the invariant manifolds of this product dynamics which support semiclassical solutions of the wave equation. The semiclassical quantization conditions contain a new term, which is of the same order as the Maslov correction. This term is identified as a rotation angle for a classical spin vector. Applied to the relativistic Kepler problem the procedure sheds some light on the amazing success of Sommerfeld's theory of fine structure [Ann. Phys. (Leipzig) 51 (1916) 1-94].
The Weyl quantization of classical observables on the torus (as phase space) without regularity assumptions is explicitly computed. The equivalence class of symbols yielding the same Weyl operator is characterized. The Heisenberg equation for the dynamics of general quantum observables is written through the Moyal brackets on the torus and the support of the Wigner transform is characterized. Finally, a dequantization procedure is introduced that applies, for instance, to the Pauli matrices. As a result we obtain the corresponding classical symbols.
A twistor model of a free massless spinning particle in 4-dimensional Minkowski space is studied in terms of spacetime and spinor variables. This model is specified by a simple action, referred to here as the gauged Shirafuji action, that consists of twistor variables and gauge fields on the 1-dimensional parameter space. We consider the canonical formalism of the model by following the Dirac formulation for constrained Hamiltonian systems. In the subsequent quantization procedure, we obtain a plane-wave solution with momentum spinors. From this solution and coefficient functions, we construct…
Quantization of $R^2$ and $S^1 \times S^1$ phase spaces are explicitly carried out tweaking the techniques of geometric quantization. Crucial is a combined use of left and right invariant vector fields. Canonical bases, operators and their actions are explicitly presented. Arguments of Dirac and also Wu and Yang for monopoles are applied for obtaining the quantization of the phase space area. Equivalence of states in the infinite dimensional prequantum Hilbert space resulting in a physical Hilbert space of dimension equal to the phase space area in units of the Planck constant is demonstrated.…
We consider interacting, charged spins on a torus described by a gapped Hamiltonian with a unique groundstate and conserved local charge. Using quasi-adiabatic evolution of the groundstate around a flux-torus, we prove, without any averaging assumption, that the Hall conductance of the groundstate is quantized in integer multiples of e^2/h, up to exponentially small corrections in the linear size of the system. In addition, we discuss extensions to the fractional quantization case under an additional topological order assumption on the degenerate groundstate subspace.
We study two anyons with Coulomb interaction in a uniform magnetic field $B$. By using the torus quantization we obtain the modified Landau and Zeeman formulas for the two anyons. Then we derive a simple algebraic equation for the full spectral problem up to the second order in $B$.
I exhibit a prequantization of the torus which is actually a ``full'' quantization in the sense that a certain complete set of classical observables is irreducibly represented. Thus in this instance there is no Groenewold-Van Hove obstruction to quantization.
Kinematics and dynamics of a particle moving on a torus knot poses an interesting problem as a constrained system. In the first part of the paper we have derived the modified symplectic structure or Dirac brackets of the above model in Dirac's Hamiltonian framework, both in toroidal and Cartesian coordinate systems. This algebra has been used to study the dynamics, in particular small fluctuations in motion around a specific torus. The spatial symmetries of the system have also been studied. In the second part of the paper we have considered the quantum theory of a charge moving in a torus kno…
We provide geometric quantization of a completely integrable Hamiltonian system in the action-angle variables around an invariant torus with respect to polarization spanned by almost-Hamiltonian vector fields of angle variables. The associated quantum algebra consists of functions affine in action coordinates. We obtain a set of its nonequivalent representations in the separable pre-Hilbert space of smooth complex functions on the torus where action operators and a Hamiltonian are diagonal and have countable spectra.
We formulate quantum mechanics in the two-dimensional torus without using position operators. We define an algebra with only momentum operators and shift operators and construct irreducible representation of the algebra. We show that it realizes quantum mechanics of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field. We prove that any irreducible representation of the algebra is unitary equivalent to each other. This work provides a firm foundation for the noncommutative torus theory.
We construct the relativistic particle model without Grassmann variables which meets the following requirements. A) Canonical quantization of the model implies the Dirac equation. B) The variable which experiences {\it Zitterbewegung}, represents a gauge non-invariant variable in our model. Hence our particle does not experiences the undesirable {\it Zitterbewegung}. C) In the nonrelativistic limit spin is described by three-vector, as it could be expected.
The aim of this paper is to construct the Berry-Hannay model of quantum mechanics on a 2n-dimensional symplectic torus. We construct a simultaneous quantization of the algebra $\cal A$ of functions on the torus and the linear symplectic group $\G = \Sp(\mathrm{2n},\Z)$. In the construction we use the quantum torus $\A$, which is a deformation of $\cal A$, together with a $\G$-action on it. We obtain the quantization via the action of $\G$ on the set of equivalence classes of irreducible representations of $\A$. For $\h \in \Q$ this action has a unique fixed point. This gives a canonical projec…
We provide a short proof of the quantisation of the Hall conductance for gapped interacting quantum lattice systems on the two-dimensional torus. This is not new and should be seen as an adaptation of the proof of [1], simplified by making the stronger assumption that the Hamiltonian remains gapped when threading the torus with fluxes. We argue why this assumption is very plausible. The conductance is given by Berry's curvature and our key auxiliary result is that the curvature is asymptotically constant across the torus of fluxes.
The extensive analysis of the dynamics of relativistic spinning particles is presented. Using the coadjoint orbits method the Hamiltonian dynamics is explicitly described. The main technical tool is the factorization of general Lorentz transformation into pure boost and rotation. The equivalent constrained dynamics on Poincare group (viewed as configuration space) is derived and complete classification of constraints is performed. It is shown that the first class constraints generate local symmetry corresponding to the stability subgroup of some point on coadjoint orbit. The Dirac brackets for…
The main goal of this paper is to construct the Hannay-Berry model of quantum mechanics, on a two dimensional symplectic torus. We construct a simultaneous quantization of the algebra of functions and the linear symplectic group $\G =$ SL$_2 (\Z)$. We obtain the quantization via an action of $\G$ on the set of equivalence classes of irreducible representations of Rieffel`s quantum torus $\Ad$. For $\h \in \Q$ this action has a unique fixed point. This gives a canonical projective equivariant quantization. There exists a Hilbert space on which both $\G$ and $\Ad$ act equivariantly. Combined wit…
I shortly describe semi-classical models of spinning electron and list a number of theoretical issues where these models turn out to be useful, see arXiv:1710.07135 for details. Then I discuss the possibility to extend the range of applicability of these models by introducing an interaction, that forces the spin to align up or down relative to its precession axis.
Quantizing the motion of particles on a Riemannian manifold in the presence of a magnetic field poses the problems of existence and uniqueness of quantizations. Both of them are settled since the early days of geometric quantization but there is still some structural insight to gain from spectral theory. Following the work of Asch, Over & Seiler (1994) for the 2-torus we describe the relation between quantization on the manifold and Bloch theory on its covering space for more general compact manifolds.
We consider development of the models of the source of the Kerr-Newman (KN) solution and new aspects related with the obtained recently field model based on a domain wall bubble with superconducting interior, arXiv:1003.2928[hep-th]. The internal Higgs field regularizes the KN solution, expelling electromagnetic field from interior to the boundary of bubble. The KN source forms a gravitating soliton, interior of which is similar to oscillating solitons (Q-balls, oscillons), while exterior is consistent with the KN solution. We obtain that a closed Wilson loop appears on the edge of the bubble,…
We construct a nonrelativistic wave equation for spinning particles in the noncommutative space (in a sense, a $θ$-modification of the Pauli equation). To this end, we consider the nonrelativistic limit of the $θ$-modified Dirac equation. To complete the consideration, we present a pseudoclassical model (à la Berezin-Marinov) for the corresponding nonrelativistic particle in the noncommutative space. To justify the latter model, we demonstrate that its quantization leads to the $θ$-modified Pauli equation. Then, we extract $θ$-modified interaction between a nonrelativistic spin and a magnetic …

In the spirit of the thin-layer quantization scheme, we give the effective Shrödinger equation for a particle confined to a corrugated torus, in which the geometric potential is substantially changed by corrugation. We find the attractive wells reconstructed by the corrugation not being at identical depths, which is strikingly different from that of a corrugated nanotube, especially in the inner side of the torus. By numerically calculating the transmission probability, we find that the resonant tunneling peaks and the transmission gaps are merged and broadened by the corrugation of the inner …
We study the reparametrization invariant system of a classical relativistic particle moving in (5+1) dimensions, of which two internal ones are compactified to form a torus. A discrete physical time is constructed based on a quasi-local invariant observable. Due to ergodicity, it is simply related to the proper time on average. The external motion in Minkowski space can then be described as a unitary quantum mechanical evolution.
The kinematic degrees of freedom of spinning particles are analyzed and an explicit construction of the phase space and the simplectic structure that accomodates them is presented. A Poincare invariant theory of classical spinning particles that generalizes the work of Proca and Barut to arbitrary spin is given using spinor variables. Second quantization is naturally connected to the unphysical nature of zitterbewegung. Position variables can not be disentangled from spin in a canonical way, nor can the phase space be reduced to the usual description $(x,p)$ and a vector spin. Pacs: 03.20.+i, …
