Spin dynamics of a cluster of coupled spins 1/2 can be manipulated to store and process a large amount of information. A new type of dynamic response makes it possible to excite coherent long-living signals, which can be used for exchanging information with a mesoscopic quantum system. An experimental demonstration is given for a system of 19 proton spins of a liquid crystal molecule.
Quantum computation requires efficient long-term storage devices to preserve quantum states. An attractive candidate for such storage devices is qubits connected to a common dissipative environment. The common environment gives rise to persistent entanglements in these qubit systems. Hence these systems act efficiently as a storage device of entanglement. However, the existence of a common environment often requires the physical proximity of the qubits and hence results in direct dipolar coupling between the qubits. In this work, we investigate the total effect of the dipolar coupling on the e…
Quantum memories with long storage times are key elements in long-distance quantum networks. The atomic frequency comb (AFC) memory in particular has shown great promise to fulfill this role, having demonstrated multimode capacity and spin-photon quantum correlations. However, the memory storage times have so-far been limited to about one millisecond, realized in a Eu${}^{3+}$ doped Y${}_2$SiO${}_5$ crystal at zero applied magnetic field. Motivated by studies showing increased spin coherence times under applied magnetic field, we developed a AFC spin-wave memory utilizing a weak 15 mT magnetic…
A quantum memory that can store quantum states faithfully and retrieve them on demand has wide applications in quantum information science. An efficient quantum memory in the microwave regime working alongside quantum processors based on superconducting quantum circuits may serve as an important architecture for quantum computers. Here we realize on-demand storage and retrieval of weak coherent microwave photon pulses at the single-photon level. We implement a superconducting multi-resonator quantum memory which is composed of a set of frequency-tunable coplanar transmission line (CPW) resonat…
The paper studies the Raman quantum memory protocol as applied to quantum light with orbital angular momentum. The memory protocol is implemented on an ensemble of three-level cold atoms with the $Λ$- configuration of energy levels. The possibility of storing quantum statistics of light with an orbital momentum is analysed in the case when the driving field could be treated as a plane wave. The efficiency analysis shows that examined storage/retrieval processes do not cause the efficiency decreasing compared with the spatial multimode memory protocol considered in [Golubeva et al. 2012]]. We a…
Quantum memories are a crucial element towards efficient quantum protocols. In the continuous variables domain, such memories need to have near unity efficiencies. Moreover, one needs to store complex quantum states exhibiting negative Wigner functions after storage. We report the implementation of an all optical quantum memory: the storage of single and two-photon Fock states with high fidelities has been realized. The Wigner functions of the reconstructed states shows negativity after $\sim 0.75~μs$ and $\sim 0.61~μs$ respectively for the single-photon and two-photon Fock states. This is, to…
Building an efficient quantum memory in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces is one of the fundamental requirements for establishing high-dimensional quantum repeaters, where it offers many advantages over two-dimensional quantum systems, such as a larger information capacity and enhanced noise resilience. To date, there have been no reports about how to achieve an efficient high-dimensional quantum memory. Here, we experimentally realize a quantum memory that is operational in Hilbert spaces of up to 25 dimensions with a storage efficiency of close to 60%. The proposed approach exploits the spatia…
Large-scale quantum networks will employ telecommunication-wavelength photons to exchange quantum information between remote measurement, storage, and processing nodes via fibre-optic channels. Quantum memories compatible with telecommunication-wavelength photons are a key element towards building such a quantum network. Here, we demonstrate the storage and retrieval of heralded 1532 nm-wavelength photons using a solid-state waveguide quantum memory. The heralded photons are derived from a photon-pair source that is based on parametric down-conversion, and our quantum memory is based on a 6 GH…
A hybrid interface of solid state single-photon sources and atomic quantum memories is a long sought-after goal in photonic quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate deterministic storage and retrieval of photons from a semiconductor quantum dot in an atomic ensemble quantum memory at telecommunications wavelengths. We store single photons from an InAs quantum dot in a high-bandwidth rubidium vapour based quantum memory, with a total internal memory efficiency of $(12.9 \pm 0.4) \%$. The signal-to-noise ratio of the retrieved photons is $18.2\pm 0.6$, limited only by detector dark counts. This…
Quantum memories for light will be essential elements in future long-range quantum communication networks. These memories operate by reversibly mapping the quantum state of light onto the quantum transitions of a material system. For networks, the quantum coherence times of these transitions must be long compared to the network transmission times, approximately 100 ms for a global communication network. Due to a lack of a suitable storage material, a quantum memory that operates in the 1550 nm optical fiber communication band with a storage time greater than 1 us has not been demonstrated. Her…
Quantum coherence control is presented for wavelength convertible quantum memory in a double-lambda-type solid ensemble whose spin states are inhomogeneously broadened. Unlike typical atomic media whose spin decay is homogeneous, a spin inhomogeneously broadened solid ensemble requires a counter-intuitive access in the quantum coherence control to avoid spontaneous emission-caused quantum noises. Such quantum coherence control in a solid ensemble results in a near perfect retrieval efficiency and is applicable to ultralong photon storage up to the spin phase relaxation time. Here, the basic ph…
Photonic quantum memory is the core element in quantum information processing (QIP). For the scalable and convenient practical applications, great efforts have been devoted to the integrated quantum memory based on various waveguides fabricated in solids. However, on-demand storage of qubits, which is an essential requirement for QIP, is still challenging to be implemented using such integrated quantum memory. Here we report the on-demand storage of time-bin qubits in an on-chip waveguide memory on the surface of a $^{151}$Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal, utilizing the Stark modulated atomic fr…
Interfaced single-photon sources and quantum memories for photons together form a foundational component of quantum technology. Achieving compatibility between heterogeneous, state-of-the-art devices is a long-standing challenge. We built and successfully interfaced a heralded single-photon source based on cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion in ppKTP and a matched memory based on electromagnetically induced transparency in warm $^{87}$Rb vapor. The bandwidth of the photons emitted by the source is 370 MHz, placing its speed in the technologically relevant regime while remain…
A quantum state light-storage, using a virtual magnetic field through the ac Stark effect is proposed to combine the high overall storage efficiency and large bandwidth employing room temperature atomic vapor. In this approach, which was called the ac Stark Gradient Echo Memory (ASGEM), it has been shown the possibility to employ about a nanosecond ac Stark pulse far detuned (about 127 THz) from D1 line of rubidium and create an atomic media with the possibility to store a photon with about a GHz bandwidth with storage and retrieval efficiency of more than 90%. A contour plot of efficiency as …

Quantum memory for flying optical qubits is a key enabler for a wide range of applications in quantum information science and technology. A critical figure of merit is the overall storage-and-retrieval efficiency. So far, despite the recent achievements of efficient memories for light pulses, the storage of qubits has suffered from limited efficiency. Here we report on a quantum memory for polarization qubits that combines an average conditional fidelity above 99% and an efficiency equal to (68$\pm$ 2)%, thereby demonstrating a reversible qubit mapping where more information is retrieved than …
We propose a two-qubit gate based on dipolar exchange interactions between individually addressable ultracold polar molecules in an array of optical dipole traps. Our proposal treats the full Hamiltonian of the $^1Σ^+$ molecule NaCs, utilizing a pair of nuclear spin states as storage qubits. A third rotationally excited state with rotation-hyperfine coupling enables switchable dipolar exchange interactions between two molecules to generate an iSWAP gate. All three states are insensitive to external magnetic and electric fields. Impacts on gate fidelity due to coupling to other molecular states…
Long-duration quantum memories for photonic qubits are essential components for achieving long-distance quantum networks and repeaters. The mapping of optical states onto coherent spin-waves in rare earth ensembles is a particularly promising approach to quantum storage. However, it remains challenging to achieve long-duration storage at the quantum level due to read-out noise caused by the required spin-wave manipulation. In this work, we apply dynamical decoupling techniques and a small magnetic field to achieve the storage of six temporal modes for 20, 50 and 100 ms in a $^{151}$Eu$^{3+}$:Y…
