It is shown how to exactly simulate many-body interactions and multi-qubit gates by coupling finite dimensional systems, e.g., qubits with a continuous variable. Cyclic evolution in the phase space of such a variable gives rise to a geometric phase, depending on a product of commuting operators. The latter allows to simulate many-body Hamiltonians and nonlinear Hamiltonians, and to implement a big variety of multi-qubit quantum gates on both qubits and encoded qubits. An application to the quantum amplitude amplification algorithm will be discussed.
We clarify that the nonadiabatic scheme based on a parallel extension of the adiabatic scenario cannot realize the desired goal of quantum computation.
Much long before the appearing time of the Comment by Cen, Li, and Yan,, the main issue addresed there by Cen et al had been resolved already. The information offered by the Comment is selective and misleading.
Conditional geometric phase shift gate, which is fault tolerate to certain errors due to its geometric property, is made by NMR technique recently under adiabatic condition. By the adiabatic requirement, the result is inexact unless the Hamiltonian changes extremely slowly in the process. However, in quantum computation, everything has to be completed within the decoherence time. High running speed of every gate in quantum computation is demanded because the power of quantum computer can be exponentially proportional to the maximum number of logic gate operation that can be taken sequentially …
A new scheme of realizing the nonadiabatic conditional geometric phase shift via a noncoplanar (and coiled) fiber system is presented in this Letter. It is shown that the effective Hamiltonian that describes the interaction of polarized photons with the fiber medium is just the Wang-Keiji type of Hamiltonian. This, therefore, means that the coiled fiber system may be an ideal implementation of realizing the nonadiabatic geometric phase gates for the topological quantum computation. The remarkable feature of the present method is that it can automatically meet the conditions and requirements pr…
In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 080502 (2005)], Zheng proposed a scheme for implementing a conditional phase shift via adiabatic passages. The author claims that the gate is "neither of dynamical nor geometric origin" on the grounds that the Hamiltonian does not follow a cyclic change. He further argues that "in comparison with the adiabatic geometric gates, the nontrivial cyclic loop is unnecessary, and thus the errors in obtaining the required solid angle are avoided, which makes this new kind of phase gates superior to the geometric gates." In this Comment, we point out that geometric operations, …
The experimental realisation of the basic constituents of quantum information processing devices, namely fault-tolerant quantum logic gates, requires conditional quantum dynamics, in which one subsystem undergoes a coherent evolution that depends on the quantum state of another subsystem. In particular, the subsystem may acquire a conditional phase shift. Here we consider a novel scenario in which this phase is of geometric rather than dynamical origin. As the conditional geometric (Berry) phase depends only on the geometry of the path executed it is resilient to certain types of errors, and o…
The geometric phase induced in an auxiliary qubit by a many-body system is calculated and discussed. Two kinds of coupling between the auxiliary qubit and the many-body system are considered, which lead to dephasing and dissipation in the qubit, respectively. As an example, we consider the XY spin-chain dephasingly couple to a qubit, the geometric phase induced in the qubit is presented and discussed. The results show that the geometric phase might be used to signal the critical points of the many-body system, and it tends to zero with the parameters of the many-body system going away from the…
We describe in detail a general strategy for implementing a conditional geometric phase between two spins. Combined with single-spin operations, this simple operation is a universal gate for quantum computation, in that any unitary transformation can be implemented with arbitrary precision using only single-spin operations and conditional phase shifts. Thus quantum geometrical phases can form the basis of any quantum computation. Moreover, as the induced conditional phase depends only on the geometry of the paths executed by the spins it is resilient to certain types of errors and offers the p…
For finite quantum many-particle systems modeled with say $m$ fermions in $N$ single particle states and interacting with $k$-body interactions ($k \leq m$), the wavefunction structure is studied using random matrix theory. Hamiltonian for the system is chosen to be $H=H_0(t) + λV(k)$ with the unperturbed $H_0(t)$ Hamiltonian being a $t$-body operator and $V(k)$ a $k$-body operator with interaction strength $λ$. Representing $H_0(t)$ and $V(k)$ by independent Gaussian orthogonal ensembles (GOE) of random matrices in $t$ and $k$ fermion spaces respectively, first four moments, in $m$-fermion sp…
In a recent letter [Phy. Rev. Lett. 95, 080502 (2005)], it is claimed that based on a new kind of quantum mechanical phase of wave function which is neither dynamical nor geometrical a new kind of phase gate for quantum computation is discovered. The origin of this phase is the adiabatic evolution of a dark state. I would like to point out that these claims are questionable. The so called new phase gate was based on a phase which was nothing new but has been known for decades. It is something which has no physical meaning and is not observable. It was also pointed out by [quant-ph/0509150v1] t…
We review the geometric features of negative conditional entropy and the properties of the conditional amplitude operator proposed by Cerf and Adami for two qubit states in comparison with entanglement and nonlocality of the states. We identify the region of negative conditional entropy in the tetrahedron of locally maximally mixed two-qubit states. Within this set of states, negative conditional entropy implies nonlocality and entanglement, but not vice versa, and we show that the Cerf-Adami conditional amplitude operator provides an entanglement witness equivalent to the Peres-Horodecki crit…
Factoring a wave function into marginal and conditional factors partitions the subsystem kinetic energy into two terms. The first depends solely on the marginal wave function, through its gauge-covariant derivative, while the second depends on the quantum metric of the conditional wave function over the manifold of marginal variables. We derive an identity for the rate of change of the second term.
In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 080502 (2005)], an interesting scheme was proposed to implement a type of conditional quantum phase gates with built-in fault-tolerant feature via adiabatic evolution of dark eigenstates. In this comment we elaborate the geometric nature of the gate scheme and clarify that it still belongs to a class of conventional geometric quantum computation.
Motivated for the fault tolerant quantum computation, quantum gate by adiabatic geometric phase shift is extensively investigated. In this paper, we demonstrate the nonadiabatic scheme for the geometric phase shift and conditional geometric phase shift. Essentially, the new scheme is simply to add an appropriate additional field. With this additional field, the state evolution can be controlled exactly on a dynamical phase free path. Geometric quantum gates for single qubit and the controlled NOT gate for two qubits are given.
We analyze the geometry of a joint distribution over a set of discrete random variables. We briefly review Shannon's entropy, conditional entropy, mutual information and conditional mutual information. We review the entropic information distance formula of Rokhlin and Rajski. We then define an analogous information area. We motivate this definition and discuss its properties. We extend this definition to higher-dimensional volumes. We briefly discuss the potential utility for these geometric measures in quantum information processing.
We present a novel analytical approach for the calculation of the mean density of states in many-body systems made of confined indistinguishable and non-interacting particles. Our method makes explicit the intrinsic geometry inherent in the symmetrization postulate and, in the spirit of the usual Weyl expansion for the smooth part of the density of states in single-particle confined systems, our results take the form of a sum over clusters of particles moving freely around manifolds in configuration space invariant under elements of the group of permutations. Being asymptotic, our approximatio…

We give a simple way to detect the geometric phase shift and the conditional geometric phase shift with Josephson junction system. Comparing with the previous work(Falcl G, Fazio R, Palma G.M., Siewert J and Verdal V, {\it Nature} {\bf 407}, 355(2000)), our scheme has two advantages. We use the non-adiabatic operation, thus the detection is less affected by the decoherence. Also, we take the time evolution on zero dynamic phase loop, we need not take any extra operation to cancel the dynamic phase.
Adding interactions to many-body Hamiltonians of geometrically frustrated lattices often leads to diminished subspaces of localized states. In this paper, we show how to construct interacting many-body Hamiltonians, starting from the non-interacting tight-binding Hamiltonians, that preserve or even expand these subspaces. The methods presented involve modifications in the one-body network representation of the many-body Hamiltonians which generate new interacting terms in these Hamiltonians. The subspace of many-particle localized states can be preserved in the interacting Hamiltonian, by proj…
We show that the cyclic evolution of an order parameter in a many-body system with spontaneous symmetry breaking in the ground state brings about a dissipative geometric phase. This phase originates from the same mechanism that leads to dissipation in thermo-field dynamics studied earlier by Umezawa and his collaborators and appears to be a manifestation of the dissipative geometric phase introduced recently by Jain and Pati.
Quantum phase transition is one of the main interests in the field of condensed matter physics, while geometric phase is a fundamental concept and has attracted considerable interest in the field of quantum mechanics. However, no relevant relation was recognized before recent work. In this paper, we present a review of the connection recently established between these two interesting fields: investigations in the geometric phase of the many-body systems have revealed so-called "criticality of geometric phase", in which geometric phase associated with the many-body ground state exhibits univers…
We propose a scheme for realizing two-qubit quantum phase gates via an unconventional geometric phase shift with atoms in a cavity. In the scheme the atoms interact simultaneously with a highly detuned cavity mode and a classical field. The atoms undergo no transitions during the gate operation, while the cavity mode is displaced along a circle in the phase space, aquiring a geometric phase conditional upon the atomic state. Under certain conditions, the atoms are disentangled with the cavity mode and thus the gate is insensitive to both the atomic spontaneous emission and the cavity decay.
We analyze state preparation within a restricted space of local control parameters between adiabatically connected states of control Hamiltonians. We formulate a conjecture that the time integral of energy fluctuations over the protocol duration is bounded from below by the geodesic length set by the quantum geometric tensor. The conjecture implies a geometric lower bound for the quantum speed limit (QSL). We prove the conjecture for arbitrary, sufficiently slow protocols using adiabatic perturbation theory and show that the bound is saturated by geodesic protocols, which keep the energy varia…
In arXiv:1407.8203, we introduced the idea of s-sourcery, a general formalism for building many-body quantum ground states using renormalization-group-inspired quantum circuits. Here we define a generalized notion of s-sourcery that applies to mixed states, and study its properties and applicability. We prove a number of theorems establishing the prevalence of mixed s-source fixed points. For our examples we focus on thermal states of local Hamiltonians. Thermal double states (also called thermofield double states) and the machinery of approximate conditional independence are used heavily in t…
The (Berry-Aharonov-Anandan) geometric phase acquired during a cyclic quantum evolution of finite-dimensional quantum systems is studied. It is shown that a pure quantum state in a (2J+1)-dimensional Hilbert space (or, equivalently, of a spin-J system) can be mapped onto the partition function of a gas of independent Dirac strings moving on a sphere and subject to the Coulomb repulsion of 2J fixed test charges (the Majorana stars) characterizing the quantum state. The geometric phase may be viewed as the Aharonov-Bohm phase acquired by the Majorana stars as they move through the gas of Dirac s…
We investigate the adiabatic evolution of thermal state in non-reciprocal many-body systems coupled to their environment and subject to periodic drivings. In such systems we show that besides the dynamical phase a geometrical phase can exist and it drives the relaxation dynamic of the system. On the contrary to the dynamical phase which always pushes the system toward its equilibrium state we show that the geometric phase can speed up or reduce the speed of relaxation process. These results could have applications in the field of thermal management of complex systems.
