We present a scheme to store unitary operators with self-inverse generators in quantum states and a general circuit to retrieve them with definite success probability. The continuous variable of the operator is stored in a single-qubit state and the information about the kind of the operator is stored in classical states with finite dimension. The probability of successful retrieval is always 1/2 irrespective of the kind of the operator, which is proved to be maximum. In case of failure, the result can be corrected with additional quantum states. The retrieving circuit is almost as simple as that which handles only the single-qubit rotations and CNOT as the basic operations. An interactive way to transfer quantum dynamics, that is, to distribute naturally copy-protected programs for quantum computers is also presented using this scheme.
In this note we consider a system with a large angular momentum l whose state we can store using some log_2(l) qubits. The problem then is how to carry out spatial rotations of the system in this representation. In other words we are looking at a unitary representation of SU(2) with dimension 2l+1 and want to implement these transformations with resources polynomial in log(l). We only give a sketch of our solution which involves ``storing'' discretised spherical harmonic functions Y_{l,m}(Theta,phi) in a quantum register. Also there are some technical gaps in the construction, but they are bas…
We address the problem of learning an unknown unitary transformation from a finite number of examples. The problem consists in finding the learning machine that optimally emulates the examples, thus reproducing the unknown unitary maximum fidelity. Learning a unitary is equivalent to storing it in the state of a quantum memory (the memory of the learning machine), and subsequently retrieving it. We prove that, whenever the unknown unitary is drawn from a group, the optimal strategy consists in a parallel call of the available uses followed by a "measure-and-rotate" retrieving. Differing from t…
Operator entanglement of two-qubit joint unitary operations is revisited. Schmidt number is an important attribute of a two-qubit unitary operation, and may have connection with the entanglement measure of the unitary operator. We found the entanglement measure of two-qubit unitary operators is classified by the Schmidt number of the unitary operators. The exact relation between the operator entanglement and the parameters of the unitary operator is clarified too.
We study the entanglement of unitary operators on $d_1\times d_2$ quantum systems. This quantity is closely related to the entangling power of the associated quantum evolutions. The entanglement of a class of unitary operators is quantified by the concept of concurrence.
Implementing nonlocal unitary operators is an important and hard question in quantum computing and cryptography. We show that any bipartite nonlocal unitary operator of Schmidt rank three on the $(d_A \times d_B)$-dimensional system is locally equivalent to a controlled unitary when $d_A$ is at most three. This operator can be locally implemented assisted by a maximally entangled state of Schmidt rank $r=\min\{d_A^2,d_B\}$. We further show that stochastic-equivalent nonlocal unitary operators are indeed locally equivalent, and propose a sufficient condition on which nonlocal and controlled uni…
Finite dimensional representations of extended Weyl-Heisenberg algebra are studied both from mathematical and applied viewpoints. They are used to define unitary phase operator and the corresponding eigenstates (phase states). It is also shown that the unitary depolarizers can be constructed in a general setting in terms of phase operators. Generation of generalized Bell states using the phase operator is presented and their expressions in terms of the elements of mutually unbiased bases are given.
We show that for general deformations of SU(2) algebra, the dynamics in terms of ladder operators is preserved. This is done for a system of precessing magnetic dipole in magnetic field, using the unitary phase operator which arises in the polar decomposition of SU(2) operators. It is pointed out that there is a single phase operator dynamics underlying the dynamics of usual and deformed ladder operators.
The unitary evolution can be represented by a finite product of exponential operators. It leads to a perturbative expression of the density operator of a close system. Based on the perturbative expression scheme, we present a entanglement measure, this measure has the advantage that it is easy to compute for a general dynamical process.
In this paper, we systematically study property testing of unitary operators. We first introduce a distance measure that reflects the average difference between unitary operators. Then we show that, with respect to this distance measure, the orthogonal group, quantum juntas (i.e. unitary operators that only nontrivially act on a few qubits of the system) and Clifford group can be all efficiently tested. In fact, their testing algorithms have query complexities independent of the system's size and have only one-sided error. Then we give an algorithm that tests any finite subset of the unitary g…
Nature provides us with a restricted set of microscopic interactions. The question is whether we can synthesize out of these fundamental interactions an arbitrary unitary operator. In this paper we present a constructive algorithm for realization of any unitary operator which acts on a (truncated) Hilbert space of a single bosonic mode. In particular, we consider a physical implementation of unitary transformations acting on 1-dimensional vibrational states of a trapped ion. As an example we present an algorithm which realizes the discrete Fourier transform.
We prove that the entangling capacity of a two-qubit unitary operator without local ancillas, both with and without the restriction to initial product states, as quantified by the maximum attainable concurrence, is directly related to the distinguishability of a closely related pair of two-qubit unitary operators. These operators are the original operator transformed into its canonical form and the adjoint of this canonical form. The distinguishability of these operators is quantified by the minimum overlap of the output states over all possible input probe states. The entangling capacity of t…
In this paper, we study the superposition invariance of unitary operators and maximally entangled state respectively. Furthermore, we discuss the set of orthogonal maximally entangled states. We find that orthogonal basis of maximally entangled states can be divided into k subspaces. It is shown that some entanglement properties of superposed state in every subspace are invariant.
We present a general method which expresses a unitary operator by the product of operators allowed by the Hamiltonian of spin-1/2 systems. In this method, the generator of an operator is found first, and then the generator is expanded by the base operators of the product operator formalism. Finally, the base operators disallowed by the Hamiltonian, including more than two-body interaction operators, are replaced by allowed ones by the axes transformation and coupling order reduction technique. This method directly provides pulse sequences for the nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computer, an…
We propose a high order numerical decomposition of exponentials of hermitean operators in terms of a product of exponentials of simple terms, following an idea which has been pioneered by M. Suzuki, however implementing it for complex coefficients. We outline a convenient fourth order formula which can be written compactly for arbitrary number of noncommuting terms in the Hamiltonian and which is superiour to the optimal formula with real coefficients, both in complexity and accuracy. We show asymptotic stability of our method for sufficiently small time step and demonstrate its efficiency and…
We derive several uncertainty relations for two arbitrary unitary operators acting on physical states of a Hilbert space. We show that our bounds are tighter in various cases than the ones existing in the current literature. Using the uncertainty relation for the unitary operators, we obtain the tight state-independent lower bound for the uncertainty of two Pauli observables and anticommuting observables in higher dimensions. With regard to the minimum-uncertainty states, we derive the minimum-uncertainty state equation by the analytic method and relate this to the ground-state problem of the …
We review the standards of relativistic quantum mechanics such as the Dirac equation under the concept of negative masses. We show that negative energies are acceptable provided the masses are simultaneously negative. Negative energy and mass anti fermions are obtained from positive energy and mass fermions through a unitary PT transformation.
Circulant matrices are an important family of operators, which have a wide range of applications in science and engineering related fields. They are in general non-sparse and non-unitary. In this paper, we present efficient quantum circuits to implement circulant operators using fewer resources and with lower complexity than existing methods. Moreover, our quantum circuits can be readily extended to the implementation of Toeplitz, Hankel, and block circulant matrices. Efficient quantum algorithms to implement the inverses and products of circulant operators are also provided.
We present a method to engineer the unitary charge conjugation operator, as given by quantum field theory, in the highly controlled context of quantum optics, thus allowing one to simulate the creation of charged particles with well-defined momenta simultaneously with their respective antiparticles. Our method relies on trapped ions driven by a laser field and interacting with a single mode of a light field in a high Q cavity.
Analogous to the notion of mutually unbiased bases for Hilbert spaces, we consider mutually unbiased unitary bases (MUUB) for the space of operators, $M(d, \mathbb{C})$, acting on such Hilbert spaces. The notion of MUUB reflects the equiprobable guesses of unitary in one bases of $M(d, \mathbb{C})$ when estimating a unitary operator in another. Though, for prime dimension $d$, the maximal number of MUUBs is known to be $d^{2}-1$, there is no known recipe for constructing them, assuming they exist. However, one can always construct a minimum of three MUUBs, and the maximal number is approached …
In this work, a novel method for using a set of electromagnetic quadrupole fields is presented to implement arbitrary unitary operators on a two-state quantum system of electrons. In addition to analytical derivations of the required quadrupole and beam settings which allow an easy direct implementation, numerical simulations of realistic scenarios show the feasibility of the proposed setup. This is expected to pave the way not only for new measurement schemes in electron microscopy and related fields but even one day for the implementation of quantum computing in the electron microscope.
We prove that every unitary acting on any multipartite system and having operator Schmidt rank equal to 2 can be diagonalized by local unitaries. This then implies that every such multipartite unitary is locally equivalent to a controlled unitary with every party but one controlling a set of unitaries on the last party. We also prove that any bipartite unitary of Schmidt rank 2 is locally equivalent to a controlled unitary where either party can be chosen as the control, and at least one party can control with two terms, which implies that each such unitary can be implemented using local opera…
Within the general context of the architecture in quantum computer design, this paper aims is to provide a general strategy to obtain a block-matrix representation of quantum gates applied to qubits placed in arbitrary positions over an arbitrary dimensional input state. The model is also extended to the framework of quantum computation with qudits. An application in the context of the quantum computational logic is provided.
A new approach to quantum walks is presented. Considering a quantum system undergoing some unitary discrete-time evolution in a directed graph G, we think of the vertices of G as sites that are occupied by the quantum system, whose internal state is described by density operators. To formulate the unitary evolution, we define reflections in the tensor product of an internal Hilbert space and a spatial Hilbert space. We then construct unitary channels that govern the evolution of the system in the graph. The discrete dynamics of the system (called quantum walks) is obtained by iterating the uni…
For a quantum state undergoing unitary Schrödinger time evolution, the von Neumann entropy is constant. Yet the second law of thermodynamics, and our experience, show that entropy increases with time. Ingarden introduced the quantum operator entropy, which is the Shannon entropy of the probability distribution for the eigenvalues of a Hermitian operator. These entropies characterize the missing information about a particular observable inherent in the quantum state itself. The von Neumann entropy is the quantum operator entropy for the case when the operator is the density matrix. We examine p…
Non-unitary theories are commonly seen in the classical simulations of quantum systems. Among these theories, the method of moments of coupled-cluster equations (MMCCs) and the ensuing classes of the renormalized coupled-cluster (CC) approaches have evolved into one of the most accurate approaches to describe correlation effects in various quantum systems. The MMCC formalism provides an effective way for correcting energies of approximate CC formulations (parent theories) using moments, or CC equations, that are not used to determine approximate cluster amplitudes. In this paper, we propose a …
We demonstrate how structured decompositions of unitary operators can be employed to derive control schemes for finite-level quantum systems that require only sequences of simple control pulses such as square wave pulses with finite rise and decay times or Gaussian wavepackets. To illustrate the technique it is applied to find control schemes to achieve population transfers for pure-state systems, complete inversions of the ensemble populations for mixed-state systems, create arbitrary superposition states and optimize the ensemble average of dynamic observables.
We introduce unitary quantum phase operators for material particles. We carry out a model study on quantum phases of interacting bosons in a symmetric double-well potential in terms of unitary and commonly-used non-unitary phase operators and compare the results for different number of bosons. We find that the results for unitary quantum phase operators are significantly different from those for non-unitary ones especially in the case of low number of bosons. We introduce unitary operators corresponding to the quantum phase-difference between two single-particle states of fermions. As an appli…
In this work we explain the necessity for consistently labeled rotation maps for efficiently computing coined discrete time quantum walks on regular graphs.
We study bipartite unitary operators which stay invariant under the local actions of diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups. We investigate structural properties of these operators, arguing that the diagonal symmetry makes them suitable for analytical study. As a first application, we construct large new families of dual unitary gates in arbitrary finite dimensions, which are important toy models for entanglement spreading in quantum circuits. We then analyze the non-local nature of these invariant operators, both in discrete (operator Schmidt rank) and continuous (entangling power) settings. …
We propose an expansion of the unitary evolution operator, associated to a given Schrödinger equation, in terms of a finite product of explicit unitary operators. In this manner, this unitary expansion can be truncated at the desired level of approximation, as shown in the given examples.
Unitary operations are physically implementable. We further the understanding of such operations by studying the possible forms of nonlocal unitary operators, which are bipartite or multipartite unitary operators that are not tensor product operators. They are of broad relevance in quantum information processing. We prove that any nonlocal unitary operator of Schmidt rank three on a $d_A\times d_B$ bipartite system is locally equivalent to a controlled unitary. This operator can be locally implemented assisted by a maximally entangled state of Schmidt rank $\min\{d_A^2,d_B\}$ when $d_A\le d_B$…
Realizing non-unitary transformations on unitary-gate based quantum devices is critically important for simulating a variety of physical problems including open quantum systems and subnormalized quantum states. We present a dilation based algorithm to simulate non-unitary operations using probabilistic quantum computing with only one ancilla qubit. We utilize the singular-value decomposition (SVD) to decompose any general quantum operator into a product of two unitary operators and a diagonal non-unitary operator, which we show can be implemented by a diagonal unitary operator in a 1-qubit dil…

This paper explores the advantages of optimizing quantum circuits on $N$ wires as operators in the unitary group $U(2^N)$. We run gradient-based optimization in the Lie algebra $\mathfrak u(2^N)$ and use the exponential map to parametrize unitary matrices. We argue that $U(2^N)$ is not only more general than the search space induced by an ansatz, but in ways easier to work with on classical computers. The resulting approach is quick, ansatz-free and provides an upper bound on performance over all ansätze on $N$ wires.
Localized unitary operators are basic probes of locality and causality in quantum systems: localized unitary operators create localized excitations in entangled states. Working with an explicit form, we explore the properties of these operators in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. We show that, unlike unitary operators, local non-unitary operators generically create non-local excitations. We present a local picture for quantum systems in which localized experimentalists can only act through localized Hamiltonian deformations, and therefore localized unitary operators. We demonstrate …
The most efficient known quantum circuits for preparing unitary coupled cluster states and applying Trotter steps of the arbitrary basis electronic structure Hamiltonian involve interleaved sequences of fermionic Gaussian circuits and Ising interaction type circuits. These circuits arise from factorizing the two-body operators generating those unitaries as a sum of squared one-body operators that are simulated using product formulas. We introduce a numerical algorithm for performing this factorization that has an iteration complexity no worse than single particle basis transformations of the t…
Electron transport in realistic physical and chemical systems often involves the non-trivial exchange of energy with a large environment, requiring the definition and treatment of open quantum systems. Because the time evolution of an open quantum system employs a non-unitary operator, the simulation of open quantum systems presents a challenge for universal quantum computers constructed from only unitary operators or gates. Here we present a general algorithm for implementing the action of any non-unitary operator on an arbitrary state on a quantum device. We show that any quantum operator ca…
The chemistry community has long sought the exact relationship between the conventional and the unitary coupled cluster ansatz for a single-reference system, especially given the interest in performing quantum chemistry on quantum computers. In this work, we show how one can use the operator manipulations given by the exponential disentangling identity and the Hadamard lemma to relate the factorized form of the unitary coupled-cluster approximation to a factorized form of the conventional coupled cluster approximation (the factorized form is required, because some amplitudes are operator-value…
We consider pseudo-unitary quantum systems and discuss various properties of pseudo-unitary operators. In particular we prove a characterization theorem for block-diagonalizable pseudo-unitary operators with finite-dimensional diagonal blocks. Furthermore, we show that every pseudo-unitary matrix is the exponential of $i=\sqrt{-1}$ times a pseudo-Hermitian matrix, and determine the structure of the Lie groups consisting of pseudo-unitary matrices. In particular, we present a thorough treatment of $2\times 2$ pseudo-unitary matrices and discuss an example of a quantum system with a $2\times 2$ …
We establish a bijection between the self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace operator on a bounded regular domain and the unitary operators on the boundary. Each unitary encodes a specific relation between the boundary value of the function and its normal derivative. This bijection sets up a characterization of all physically admissible dynamics of a nonrelativistic quantum particle confined in a cavity. More- over, this correspondence is discussed also at the level of quadratic forms. Finally, the connection between this parametrization of the extensions and the classical one, in terms of boun…
For the description of quantum evolution, the use of a manifestly time-dependent quantum Hamiltonian $\mathfrak{h}(t) =\mathfrak{h}^\dagger(t)$ is shown equivalent to the work with its simplified, time-independent alternative $G\neq G^\dagger$. A tradeoff analysis is performed recommending the latter option. The physical unitarity requirement is shown fulfilled in a suitable ad hoc representation of Hilbert space.
