We investigate the separability properties of quantum two-party Gaussian states in the framework of the operator formalism for the density operator. Such states arise as natural generalizations of the entangled state originally introduced by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen. We present explicit forms of separable and nonseparable Gaussian states.
A very explicit analytic formula of the separability criterion of two-party Gaussian systems is given. This formula is compared to the past formulation of the separability criterion of continuous variables two-party Gaussian systems.
A general separability condition on the second moment (covariance matrix) for continuous variable two-party systems is derived by an analysis analogous to the derivation of the Kennard's uncertainty relation without referring to the non-negativity of the partially transposed density matrix. This separability criterion is generally more stringent than that used by Simon which is based on the non-negativity of partially transposed density matrix, and thus this criterion may be useful in the analysis of general continuous two-party systems. Another separability criterion used by Duan et al. is sh…
In this paper, we give Separability criterion for the multi-mode Gaussian states using the Marchenko-Pastur theorem. We show that the Marchenko-Pastur theorem from random matrix theory as necessary and sufficient condition for separability of multimode Gaussian states.
Duan, Giedke, Cirac and Zoller (quant-ph/9908056) and, independently, Simon (quant-ph/9909044) have recently found necessary and sufficient conditions for the separability (classical correlation) of the Gaussian two-party (continuous variable) states. Duan et al remark that their criterion is based on a "much stronger bound" on the total variance of a pair of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type operators than is required simply by the uncertainty relation. Here, we seek to formalize and test this particular assertion in both classical and quantum-theoretic frameworks. We first attach to these states …
We present a class of non-Gaussian two-mode continuous variable states for which the separability criterion for Gaussian states can be employed to detect whether they are separable or not. These states reduce to the two-mode Gaussian states as a special case.
We show that the following nontrivial necessary precondition for an entanglement evolution equation for pure Gaussian states under one-sided Gaussian channels holds. Suppose a Gaussian quantum channel acts on one mode of a pure entangled multi-mode Gaussian input state. Then, for a fixed channel, either all output states are entangled or none of them are. In other words, if the input state is Gaussian, pure and entangled, the separability after a one-sided Gaussian quantum channel does not depend on the input state, but only on the channel. Furthermore, a simple linear-algebraic separability c…
We give out the time evolution solution of simultaneous amplitude and phase damping for any continuous variable state. For the simultaneous amplitude and phase damping of a wide class of two- mode entangled Gaussian states, two analytical conditions of the separability are given. One is the sufficient condition of separability. The other is the condition of PPT separability where the Peres-Horodecki criterion is applied. Between the two conditions there may exist bound entanglement. The simplest example is the simultaneous amplitude and phase damping of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state. The da…
Tripartite three mode Gaussian state undergoes parametric amplification and amplitude damping as well as thermal noise is studied. In the case of a state totally symmetrically interacting with the environment, the time dependent correlation matrix of the state in evolution is given. The conditions for fully separability and fully entanglement of the final tripartite three mode Gaussian state are worked out.
We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for separability of Gaussian states of bipartite systems of arbitrarily many modes. The condition provides an operational criterion since it can be checked by simple computation. Moreover, it allows us to find a pure product-state decomposition of any given separable Gaussian state. Our criterion is independent of the one based on partial transposition, and is strictly stronger.
We investigate separability and entanglement of mixed states in ${\cal C}^2\otimes{\cal C}^2\otimes{\cal C}^N$ three party quantum systems. We show that all states with positive partial transposes that have rank $\le N$ are separable. For the 3 qubit case (N=2) we prove that all states $ρ$ that have positive partial transposes and rank 3 are separable. We provide also constructive separability checks for the states $ρ$ that have the sum of the rank of $ρ$ and the ranks of partial transposes with respect to all subsystems smaller than 15N-1.
We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the separability of tripartite three mode Gaussian states, that is easy to check for any such state. We give a classification of the separability properties of those systems and show how to determine for any state to which class it belongs. We show that there exist genuinely tripartite bound entangled states and point out how to construct and prepare such states.
The known Peres-Horodecki criterion and scaling criterion of separability are considered on examples of three-mode and four-mode Gaussian states of electromagnetic field. It is shown that the principal minors of the photon quadrature dispersion matrix are sensitive to the change of scaling parameters. An empirical observation has shown that the bigger the modulus of negative principal minors, the more entangled the state.
We investigate the separability of the two-mode Gaussian states by using the variances of a pair of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR)-like observables. Our starting point is inspired by the general necessary condition of separability introduced by Duan {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84}, 2722 (2000)]. We evaluate the minima of the normalized forms of both the product and sum of such variances, as well as that of a regularized sum. Making use of Simon's separability criterion, which is based on the condition of positivity of the partial transpose (PPT) of the density matrix [Phys. Rev. Lett. {…
We introduce examples of three- and four-mode entangled Gaussian mixed states that are not detected by the scaling and Peres-Horodecki separability criteria. The presented modification of the scaling criterion resolves this problem. Also it is shown that the new criterion reproduces the main features of the scaling pictures for different cases of entangled states, while the previous versions lead to completely different outcomes. This property of the presented scheme is evidence of its higher generality.
Currently available separability criteria for continuous-variable states are generally based on the covariance matrix of quadrature operators. The well-known separability criterion of Duan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2722 (2000)] and Simon [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2726 (2000)] , for example, gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a two-mode Gaussian state to be separable, but leaves many entangled non-Gaussian states undetected. Here, we introduce an improvement of this criterion that enables a stronger entanglement detection. The improved condition is based on the knowledge of an additi…
Starting with a set of conditions for bipartite separability of arbitrary quantum states in any dimension and expressed in terms of arbitrary operators whose commutator is a $c$-number, we derive a hierarchy of conditions for tripartite separability of continuous-variable three-mode quantum states. These conditions have the form of inequalities for higher-order moments of linear combinations of the mode operators. They enable one to distinguish between all possible kinds of tripartite separability, while the strongest violation of these inequalities is a sufficient condition for genuine tripar…
We present a geometric approach to the characterization of separability and entanglement in pure Gaussian states of an arbitrary number of modes. The analysis is performed adapting to continuous variables a formalism based on single subsystem unitary transformations that has been recently introduced to characterize separability and entanglement in pure states of qubits and qutrits [arXiv:0706.1561]. In analogy with the finite-dimensional case, we demonstrate that the $1 \times M$ bipartite entanglement of a multimode pure Gaussian state can be quantified by the minimum squared Euclidean distan…
Gaussian states -- or, more generally, Gaussian operators -- play an important role in Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Science, both in discussions about conceptual issues and in practical applications. We describe, in a tutorial manner, a systematic operator method for first characterizing such states and then investigating their properties. The central numerical quantities are the covariance matrix that specifies the characteristic function of the state, and the closely related matrices associated with Wigner's and Glauber's phase space functions. For pedagogical reasons, we restrict …
We present a novel approach to the separability problem for Gaussian quantum states of bosonic continuous variable systems. We derive a simplified necessary and sufficient separability criterion for arbitrary Gaussian states of $m$ vs $n$ modes, which relies on convex optimisation over marginal covariance matrices on one subsystem only. We further revisit the currently known results stating the equivalence between separability and positive partial transposition (PPT) for specific classes of Gaussian states. Using matrix analysis techniques such as Schur complements and matrix means, we provide…
A necessary and sufficient condition for characterization and quantification of entanglement of any bipartite Gaussian state belonging to a special symmetry class is given in terms of classicality measures of one-party states. For Gaussian states whose local covariance matrices have equal determinants it is shown that separability of a two-party state and classicality of one party state are completely equivalent to each other under a nonlocal operation, allowing entanglement features to be understood in terms of any available classicality measure.
We consider an arbitrary continuous-variable three-party Gaussian quantum state which is used to perform quantum teleportation of a pure Gaussian state between two of the parties (Alice and Bob). In turn, the third party (Charlie) can condition the process by means of local operations and classical communication. We find the best measurement that Charlie can implement on his own mode that preserves the Gaussian character of the three-mode state and optimizes the teleportation fidelity between Alice and Bob.
A multimode uncertainty relation (generalising the Robertson-Schroedinger relation) is derived as a necessary constraint on the second moments of n pairs of canonical operators. In turn, necessary conditions for the separability of multimode continuous variable states under (m+n)-mode bipartitions are derived from the uncertainty relation. These conditions are proven to be necessary and sufficient for (1+n)-mode Gaussian states and for (m+n)-mode bisymmetric Gaussian states.
Determining whether a quantum state is separable or entangled is a problem of fundamental importance in quantum information science. This is a brief review in which we consider the problem for states in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. We show how the problem becomes tractable for a class of Gaussian states.
We discuss the entanglement properties of bipartite states with Gaussian Wigner functions. Separability and the positivity of the partial transpose are characterized in terms of the covariance matrix of the state, and it is shown that for systems composed of a single oscillator for Alice and an arbitrary number for Bob, positivity of the partial transpose implies separability. However, this implications fails with two oscillators on each side, as we show by a five parameter family of explicit counterexamples.
We prove, using symplectic methods and The Wigner formalism, a refinement of a criterion due to Werner and Wolf for the separability of bipartite Gaussian mixed states in an arbitrary number of dimensions. We use our result to show that one can characterize separability by comparing these states with separable pure Gaussian states.
In view of the photon-number tomograms of two-mode light states, using the qubit-portrait method for studying the probability distributions with infinite outputs, the separability and entanglement detection of the states are studied. Examples of entangled Gaussian state and Schrödinger cat state are discussed.
P-representability is a necessary and sufficient condition for separability of bipartite Gaussian states only for the special subset of states whose covariance matrix are $Sp(2,R)\otimes Sp(2,R)$ locally invariant. Although this special class of states can be reached by a convenient $Sp(2,R)\otimes Sp(2,R)$ transformation over an arbitrary covariance matrix, it represents a loss of generality, avoiding inference of many general aspects of separability of bipartite Gaussian states.
The notion of partial trace of a density operator is essential for the understanding of the entanglement and separability properties of quantum states. In this paper we investigate these notions putting an emphasis on the geometrical properties of the covariance ellipsoids of the reduced states. We thereafter focus on Gaussian states and we give new and easily numerically implementable sufficient conditions for the separability of all Gaussian states. Unlike the positive partial transposition criterion, none of these conditions is however necessary.
We investigate the possibility of characterizing two-party entanglement by measuring correlations of Stokes operators in polarized bright light beams. We adapt a general separability criterion to such operators. We then show that entanglement purification can only be singled out for a particular protocol.
Motivated by the notions of $k$-extendability and complete extendability of the state of a finite level quantum system as described by Doherty et al (Phys. Rev. A, 69:022308), we introduce parallel definitions in the context of Gaussian states and using only properties of their covariance matrices derive necessary and sufficient conditions for their complete extendability. It turns out that the complete extendability property is equivalent to the separability property of a bipartite Gaussian state. Following the proof of quantum de Finetti theorem as outlined in Hudson and Moody (Z. Wahrschein…

The evolution of two-mode Gaussian state under symmetric amplification, non-symmetric damping and thermal noise is studied. The time dependent solution of the state characteristic function is obtained. The separability criterions are given for the final state of weak amplification as well as strong amplification.
We consider the problem of decorrelating states of coupled quantum systems. The decorrelation can be seen as separation of quantum signals, in analogy to the classical problem of signal-separation rising in the so-called cocktail-party context. The separation of signals cannot be achieved perfectly, and we analyse the optimal decorrelation map in terms of added noise in the local separated states. Analytical results can be obtained both in the case of two-level quantum systems and for Gaussian states of harmonic oscillators.
Using the Green's function approach we investigate separability of the vacuum state of a massless scalar field with a single Dirichlet boundary. Separability is demonstrated using the positive partial transpose criterion for effective two-mode Gaussian states of collective operators. In contrast to the vacuum energy, entanglement of the vacuum is not modified by the presence of the boundary.
We present a numerical method for solving the separability problem of Gaussian quantum states in continuous-variable quantum systems. We show that the separability problem can be cast as an equivalent problem of determining the feasibility of a set of linear matrix inequalities. Thus, it can be efficiently solved using existent numerical solvers. We apply this method to the identification of bound entangled Gaussian states. We show that the proposed method can be used to identify bound entangled Gaussian states that could be simple enough to be producible in quantum optics.
We show an example of benign non-separability in an apparently separable system consisting of $n$ free non-correlated quantum particles, solitonic solutions to the nonlinear phase modification of the Schrödinger equation proposed recently. The non-separability manifests itself in the wave function of a single particle being influenced by the very presence of other particles. In the simplest case of identical particles, it is the number of particles that affects the wave function of each particle and, in particular, the width of its Gaussian probability density. As a result, this width, a local…
Quantumness and separability criteria for continuous variable systems are discussed for the case of a noncommutative (NC) phase-space. In particular, the quantum nature and the entanglement configuration of NC two-mode Gaussian states are examined. Two families of covariance matrices describing standard quantum mechanics (QM) separable states are deformed into a NC QM configuration and then investigated through the positive partial transpose criterium for identifying quantum entanglement. It is shown that the entanglement of Gaussian states may be exclusively induced by switching on the NC def…
We derive a hierarchy of separability criteria for multi-mode continuous variable systems. They permit to study in a unified way the k-partite entanglement of broad classes of Gaussian and non- Gaussian states. With specific examples we demonstrate the strength of the criteria, and, we discuss their assessment based on data obtained from Gaussian measurements.
Second-order interference and Hanbury-Brown and Twiss type experiments can provide an operational framework for the construction of witness operators that can test classical and nonclassical properties of a Gaussian squeezed state (GSS), and provide entanglement witness operators to study the separability properties of correlated Gaussian squeezed sates.
We consider two classes of non-Gaussian entangled states generated from the product of number states with the action of the beamsplitter or the two-mode squeezer. It is shown that, for many of these states, the covariance matrix is compatible with the covariance matrix of separable Gaussian states and their separability cannot be verified by the measurements of the first and second moments of canonical variables. We identify a couple of continuous-variable entanglement criteria with higher order moments to verify these non-Gaussian entanglement.
We consider the possibilities offered by Gaussian states and operations for two honest parties, Alice and Bob, to obtain privacy against a third eavesdropping party, Eve. We first extend the security analysis of the protocol proposed in M. Navascues et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 010502 (2005). Then, we prove that a generalized version of this protocol does not allow to distill a secret key out of bound entangled Gaussian states.
The separability of bipartite non-Gaussian states is studied by applying the realignment criterion with the technique of functional analysis. The realignment criterion is given as one inequality in contrast to the infinitive number of inequalities based on the moments. We give the necessary and sufficient condition of inseparability for non-Gaussian states prepared by photon subtraction or addition from symmetric Gaussian states. The entanglement criterion of non-Gaussian states evolved in thermal noise and amplitude damping environment is also obtained.
We address continuous variable quantum teleportation in Gaussian quantum noisy channels, either thermal or squeezed-thermal. We first study the propagation of twin-beam and evaluate a threshold for its separability. We find that the threshold for purely thermal channels is always larger than for squeezed-thermal ones. On the other hand, we show that squeezing the channel improves teleportation of squeezed states and, in particular, we find the class of squeezed states that are better teleported in a given noisy channel. Finally, we find regimes where optimized teleportation of squeezed states …
We use quantum entanglement witnesses derived from Gaussian operators to study the separable criteria of continuous variable states. We transform the validity of a Gaussian witness to a Bosonic Gaussian channel problem. It follows that the maximal means of two-mode and some four-mode Gaussian operators over product pure states are achieved by vacuum (or coherent states and squeezed states) according to the properties of Bosonic Gaussian channels. Then we have necessary and sufficient criteria of separability not only for Gaussian quantum states, but also for non-Gaussian states prepared by pho…
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is a quantum mechanical phenomenon that allows one party to steer the state of a distant party by exploiting their shared entanglement. It has potential applications in secure quantum communication. In this paper, we present two swapping schemes of Gaussian EPR steering, single-channel and dual-channel schemes, by the technique of entanglement swapping. Two space-separated independent EPR steering states without a direct interaction present EPR steering after deterministic swapping. By comparing the EPR steering of the single-channel and dual-channel sche…
In spite of their outstanding experimental relevance, Gaussian operations in continuous-variable quantum systems are subjected to fundamental limitations, as it is known that general resources cannot be distilled within the Gaussian paradigm. We show that these limitations can be overcome by considering a collaborative setting where one party increases the amount of local resource with the aid of another party, whose operations are assumed to be Gaussian but are otherwise unrestricted; the two parties can only communicate classically. We show that in single-shot scenarios, unlike in the well-k…
Source noise affects the security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD), and is diffcult to analyze. We propose a model to characterize Gaussian source noise through introducing a neutral party (Fred) who induces the noise with a general unitary transformation. Without knowing Fred's exact state, we derive the security bounds for both reverse and direct reconciliations and show that the bound for reverse reconciliation is tight.
Toeplitz operators (also called localization operators) are a generalization of the well-known anti-Wick pseudodifferential operators studied by Berezin and Shubin. When a Toeplitz operator is positive semi-definite and has trace one we call it a density Toeplitz operator. Such operators represent physical states in quantum mechanics. In the present paper we study several aspects of Toeplitz operators when their symbols belong to some well-known functional spaces (e.g. the Feichtinger algebra) and discuss (tentatively) their separability properties with an emphasis on the Gaussian case.
We use matched quantum entanglement witnesses to study the separable criteria of continuous variable states. The witness can be written as an identity operator minus a Gaussian operator. The optimization of the witness then is transformed to an eigenvalue problem of a Gaussian kernel integral equation. It follows a separable criterion not only for symmetric Gaussian quantum states, but also for non-Gaussian states prepared by photon adding to or/and subtracting from symmetric Gaussian states. Based on Fock space numeric calculation, we obtain an entanglement witness for more general two-mode s…
Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) is considered to be an alternative to classical cryptography for secure communication. However, its transmission distance is restricted to metropolitan areas, given that it is affected by the channel excess noise and losses. In this paper, we present a scheme for implementing long-distance CVQKD using separable Gaussian states. This tunable QKD protocol requires separable Gaussian states, which are squeezed and displaced, along with the assistance of classical communication and available linear optics compoments. This protocol originates fro…
In the framework of the theory of open systems based on completely positive quantum dynamical semigroups, we give a description of the dynamics of entanglement for a system consisting of two uncoupled harmonic oscillators interacting with a thermal environment. Using Peres-Simon necessary and sufficient criterion for separability of two-mode Gaussian states, we describe the evolution of entanglement in terms of the covariance matrix for a Gaussian input state. For some values of the temperature of environment, the state keeps for all times its initial type: separable or entangled. In other cas…
The time evolution of quantum correlations of entangled two-mode continuous variable states is examined in single-reservoir as well as two-reservoir models, representing noisy correlated or uncorrelated non-Markovian quantum channels. For this purpose the model of quantum Brownian motion is extended. Various separability criteria for Gaussian continuous variable systems are applied. In both types of reservoir models moderate non-Markovian effects prolong the separability time scales. However, in these models the properties of the stationary state may differ. In the two-reservoir model the init…
We define an EPR-like uncertainty by using the Duan et al.'s inequality which gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the separability of any two-mode Gaussian state. We show that for a given amount of entanglement, the uncertainty is minimized by pure two-mode squeezed states. Using this fact, we write the optimal pure-state decomposition and derive a compact form for the entanglement of formation of two-mode Gaussian states. For illustration purposes, we consider symmetric and squeezed thermal states as special cases and evaluate their entanglement of formation explicitly. For the sym…
The positivity of the partial transpose is in general only a necessary condition for separability. There exist quantum states that are not separable, but nevertheless are positive under partial transpose. States of this type are known as bound entangled states meaning that these states are entangled but they do not allow distillation of pure entanglement by means of local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We present a parametrization of a class of $2\times 2$ bound entangled Gaussian states for bipartite continuous-variable quantum systems with two modes on each side. We propose a…
In the framework of the theory of open systems based on completely positive quantum dynamical semigroups, we give a description of the dynamics of entanglement for a system consisting of two uncoupled modes interacting with a thermal environment. Using Peres-Simon necessary and sufficient criterion of separability for two-mode Gaussian states, we describe the evolution of entanglement in terms of the covariance matrix for a Gaussian input state. We determine the asymptotic Gaussian maximally entangled mixed states (GMEMS) and their corresponding asymptotic maximal logarithmic negativity, which…
