Field quantization in three dimensional unstable optical systems is treated by expanding the vector potential in terms of non-Hermitean (Fox-Li) modes in both the cavity and external regions. The cavity non-Hermitean modes (NHM) are treated using the paraxial and monochromaticity approximations. The NHM bi-orthogonality relationships are used in a standard canonical quantization procedure based on introducing generalised coordinates and momenta for the electromagnetic (EM) field. The quantum EM field is equivalent to a set of quantum harmonic oscillators (QHO), associated with either the cavity or the external region NHM. This confirms the validity of the photon model in unstable optical systems, though the annihilation and creation operators for each QHO are not Hermitean adjoints. The quantum Hamiltonian for the EM field is the sum of non-commuting cavity and external region contributions, each of which is sum of independent QHO Hamiltonians for each NHM, but the external field Hamiltonian also includes a coupling term responsible for external NHM photon exchange processes. Cavity energy gain and loss processes is associated with the non-commutativity of cavity and external region operators, given in terms of surface integrals involving cavity and external region NHM functions on the cavity-external region boundary. The spontaneous decay of a two-level atom inside an unstable cavity is treated using the essential states approach and the rotating wave approximation. Atomic transitions leading to cavity NHM photon absorption have a different coupling constant to those leading to photon emission, a feature resulting from the use of NHM functions. Under certain conditions the decay rate is enhanced by the Petermann factor.
Feshbach's projector technique is employed to quantize the electromagnetic field in optical resonators with an arbitray number of escape channels. We find spectrally overlapping resonator modes coupled due to the damping and noise inflicted by the external radiation field. For wave chaotic resonators the mode dynamics is determined by a non--Hermitean random matrix. Upon including an amplifying medium, our dynamics of open-resonator modes may serve as a starting point for a quantum theory of random lasing.
We study the quantum properties of the electromagnetic field in optical cavities coupled to an arbitrary number of escape channels. We consider both inhomogeneous dielectric resonators with a scalar dielectric constant $ε({\bf r})$ and cavities defined by mirrors of arbitrary shape. Using the Feshbach projector technique we quantize the field in terms of a set of resonator and bath modes. We rigorously show that the field Hamiltonian reduces to the system--and--bath Hamiltonian of quantum optics. The field dynamics is investigated using the input--output theory of Gardiner and Collet. In the c…
It has very recently been suggested that asymmetric coupling of electromagnetic fields to thermal reservoirs under nonequilibrium conditions can produce unexpected oscillatory behavior in the local photon statistics in layered structures. Better understanding of the predicted phenomena could enable useful applications related to thermometry, noise filtering, and enhancing optical interactions. In this work we briefly review the field quantization and study the local steady state temperature distributions in optical cavities formed of lossless and lossy media to show that also local field tempe…
Dirac in 1931 gave a beautiful argument for the quantization of electric charge, which required only the existence in the universe of one magnetic monopole, because gauge invariance of the interaction between the pole and any charge could hold only if the product of the charge and the pole strength were quantized in half-integer multiples of the reduced Planck constant. However, if the photon had a nonzero mass, implying exponential decrease of the flux out of an electric charge, then Dirac's argument might seem to fail. We demonstrate that the result still should hold. The key point is that m…
We have made a single-photon detector that relies on photoconductive gain in a narrow electron channel in an AlGaAs/GaAs 2-dimensional electron gas. Given that the electron channel is 1-dimensional, the photo-induced conductance has plateaus at multiples of the quantum conductance 2e$^{2}$/h. Super-imposed on these broad conductance plateaus are many sharp, small, conductance steps associated with single-photon absorption events that produce individual photo-carriers. This type of photoconductive detector could measure a single photon, while safely storing and protecting the spin degree of fre…
We develop a fully quantum theoretical approach which describes the dynamics of Frenkel excitons and bi-excitons induced by few photon quantum light in a quantum well or wire (atomic chain) of finite size. The eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of the coupled exciton-photon states in a multiatomic system are found and the role of spatial confinement as well as the energy quantization effects in 1D and 2D cases is analyzed. Due to the spatial quantization, the excitation process is found to consist in the Rabi-like oscillations between the collective symmetric states characterized by discrete ene…
The monochromatic Dirac and polychromatic Titulaer-Glauber quantized field theories (QFTs) of electromagnetism are derived from a photon-energy wave function in much the same way that one derives QFT for electrons, that is, by quantization of a single-particle wave function. The photon wave function and its equation of motion are established from the Einstein energy-momentum-mass relation, assuming a local energy density. This yields a theory of photon wave mechanics (PWM). The proper Lorentz-invariant single-photon scalar product is found to be non-local in coordinate space, and is shown to c…
A notion of quantization is proposed that is independent of the original statistical interpretation of the distribution of energy in a photon gas or of the quantization of angular momentum in hydrogen atom. Such a procedutre implies the existance of finite space-time four-interval that any relativistic preparation and measurement of a physical event requires. That finite four-interval is also the epistemological source of QM uncertainty relations. Furthermore, the consetrvation of helicity in the propagation of a photon is a relativistic invariant, and is the origin of the "appearence" of a pa…
Finite resolution quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements allow a determination of light field properties while preserving some of the original quantum coherence of the input state. It is thus possible to measure correlations between the photon number and a quadrature component of the same light field mode. Nonclassical features emerge as photon number quantization is resolved. In particular, a strong anti-correlation of quantization and coherence is observable in QND measurements of photon number, and a correlation between measurement induced quantum jumps and quadrature component measuremen…
We present a quantization scheme for optical systems with absorptive losses, based on an expansion in the complete set of scattering solutions to Maxwell's equations. The natural emergence of both absorptive loss and fluctuations without introducing a thermal bath is demonstrated. Our model predicts mechanisms of absorption induced squeezing and dispersion mediated photon conversion.
The quantization of the electromagnetic field in vacuum is presented without reference to lagrangean quantum field theory. The equal time commutators of the fields are calculated from basic principles. A physical discussion of the commutators suggest that the electromagnetic fields are macroscopic emergent properties of more fundamental physical system: the photons.
A non-perturbative quantization of a paraxial electromagnetic field is achieved via a generalized dispersion relation imposed on the longitudinal and the transverse components of the photon wave vector. The theoretical formalism yields a seamless transition between the paraxial- and the Maxwell-equation solutions. This obviates the need to introduce either "ad hoc" or perturbatively-defined field operators. In the limit of narrow beam-like fields, the theory is in agreement with approximated quantization schemes provided by other authors.
Choosing the right first quantization basis in quantum optics is critical for the interpretation of experimental results. The usual frequency basis is, for instance, inappropriate for short, subcycle waveforms. Deriving first quantization in time domain shows that the electromagnetic field is not directly proportional, nor even causally related, to the photonic field (the amplitude probability of a photon detection). We derive the relation between the two and calculate the statistics of the electromagnetic field for specific states in time domain, such as the single photon Fock state. We intro…
We present a new math-physics modeling approach, called canonical quantization with numerical mode-decomposition, for capturing the physics of how incoming photons interact with finite-sized dispersive media, which is not describable by the previous Fano-diagonalization methods. The main procedure is to (1) study a system where electromagnetic (EM) fields are coupled to non-uniformly distributed Lorentz oscillators in Hamiltonian mechanics, (2) derive a generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problem for conjugate pairs in coordinate space, (3) apply computational electromagnetics methods to find a c…
The notion of intrinsic system of coordinates is introduced for the photon from the constraint of transversality condition. The degree of freedom to specify the intrinsic system is extracted from the same constraint, which turns out to be responsible for the spin Hall effect of light. It is shown that the fundamental quantization conditions that break down in the laboratory system of coordinates restore in the intrinsic system, which make it realizable to canonically quantize the radiation field. It is also shown that the dependence of the intrinsic system on the momentum underlies the noncomm…
Multi-photon and coherent states of light are formulated in terms of a reducible representation of canonical commutation relations. Standard properties of such states are recovered as certain limiting cases. The new formalism leads to field operators and not operator-valued distributions. The example of radiation fields produced by a classical current shows an automatic regularization of the infrared divergence.
A four-dimensional photon polarization space, such that gives a different interpretation of the ladder operators for the time-like degree comparing to the Gupta-Bleuler formulation is presented. This interpretation, coming from the construction of a covariant Hamiltonian, gives positive defined norms for all the four polarization degrees of freedom. This paper is written in the background of reducible representation algebras introduced by Czachor, although the interpretation of the ladder operators as presented here could be done independently. States that reproduce standard electromagnetic fi…
The effect of the transversality condition on the quantization of the photon orbital angular momentum is studied. The quantum gauge that is deduced from the transversality condition is shown to be a Berry gauge. It determines a helicity-dependent reference point relative to which the position is canonically conjugate to the momentum. As a result, the photon orbital angular momentum about the origin of the laboratory reference system split into two parts. One is the orbital angular momentum of the photon about the reference point, which is canonical. The other is the orbital angular momentum of…
We have recently developed a position-dependent quantization scheme for describing the ladder and effective photon-number operators associated with the electric field to analyze quantum optical energy transfer in lossy and dispersive dielectrics [Phys. Rev. A, 89, 033831 (2014)]. While having a simple connection to the thermal balance of the system, these operators only described the electric field and its coupling to lossy dielectric bodies. Here we extend this field quantization scheme to include the magnetic field and thus to enable description of the total electromagnetic field and discuss…
Using a phenomenological approach to field quantization, an expression for the Keldysh function of photons between two planar interfaces (Casimir geometry) is found for any stationary quantum state of the two bodies. The case of one interface sliding against the other is considered in detail.
An ad hoc quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in a weakly dispersive, transparent dielectric leads to the definition of canonical and kinetic forms for the momentum of the electromagnetic field in a dispersive medium. The canonical momentum is uniquely defined as the operator that generates spatial translations in a uniform medium, but the quantization scheme suggests two possible choices for the kinetic momentum operator, corresponding to the Abraham or the Minkowski momentum in classical electrodynamics. Another implication of this procedure is that a wave packet containing a s…
We present a Gupta-Bleuler quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in time-dependent dielectric media. Starting from the Maxwell equations, a generalization of the Lorentz gauge condition adapted to time varying dielectrics is derived. Using this gauge, a Gupta-Bleuler approach to quantize all polarizations of the radiation field and the corresponding constraint condition are introduced. This new approach is different from the quantized electromagnetic field in vacuum in the sense that here the contributions of unphysical photons cannot be thoroughly eliminated, which further lead to…
We consider an approach in which the usual wave function in the quadrature representation of mode j of the electromagnetic field is further quantized to produce a field operator. Since the electromagnetic field is already second quantized, this corresponds to an additional or third quantization. The third-quantization approach can be used to perform certain quantum optics calculations in the Heisenberg picture that could only be performed in the Schrodinger picture when using the conventional second-quantized theory. This approach also allows an interesting generalization of quantum optics and…
A quantum field theory approach is put forward to generalize the concept of classical spatial light beams carrying orbital angular momentum to the single-photon level. This quantization framework is carried out both in the paraxial and nonparaxial regimes. Upon extension to the optical phase space, closed-form expressions are found for a photon Wigner representation describing transformations on the orbital Poincare sphere of unitarily related families of paraxial spatial modes.
In near-field optics and optical tunneling theory, photon wave mechanics, i.e., the first quantized theory of the photon, allows us to address the spatial field localization problem in a flexible manner which links smoothly to classical electromagnetics. In this letter, photon wave mechanics is developed in a rigorous and unified way, based on which field quantization is obtained in a new way.
The quantization of the electromagnetic field in lossy and dispersive dielectric media has been widely studied during the last few decades. However, several aspects of energy transfer and its relation to consistently defining position-dependent ladder operators for the electromagnetic field in nonequilibrium conditions have partly escaped the attention. In this work we define the position-dependent ladder operators and an effective local photon-number operator that are consistent with the canonical commutation relations and use these concepts to describe the energy transfer and thermal balance…
We show that the standard method of introducing the quantum description of the electromagnetic field -- by canonical field quantization -- is not the only one. We have chosen here the relativistic quantum mechanics of the photon as the starting point. The treatment of photons as elementary particles merges smoothly with the description in terms of the quantized electromagnetic field but it also reveals some essential differences. The most striking result is the appearance of various measures of fidelity for quantum states of photons. These measures are used to characterize the localization of …
The purpose of this article is to show that the standard method of introducing the quantum description of the electromagnetic field -- by canonical field quantization -- is not the only one. We have chosen instead as the starting point the relativistic quantum mechanics of photons. Our present understanding of the nature of photons significantly differs from what has been known years ago when the concept of a photon has only been emerging. We show how the description of photons treated as elementary particles merges smoothly with the classical description of the electromagnetic field and leads…
We develop a rigorous mathematically consistent description of PT symmetric optical systems by using second quantization. We demonstrate the possibility of significant spontaneous generation of photons in PT symmetric systems. Further we show the emergence of Hanbury-Brown Twiss (HBT) correlations in spontaneous generation. We show that the spontaneous generation determines decisively the nonclassical nature of fields in PT symmetric systems. Our work can be applied to other systems like plasmonic structure where losses are compensated by gain mechanisms.
The symmetry studies of Maxwell equations gave new insight on the nature of electromagnetic (EM) field. It has in general case quaternion single structure, consisting of four independent field constituents, which differ with each other by the parities under space inversion and time reversal. Generalized Maxwell equations for quaternion four-component EM-field are obtained. Invariants for EM-field, consisting of dually symmetric parts are found. It is shown, that there exists physical conserving quantity, which is simultaneously invariant under both Rainich dual and additional hyperbolic dual s…

The ordinary Landau problem consists of describing a charged particle in time-independent magnetic field. In the present case the problem is generalized onto time-dependent uniform electric fields with time-dependent mass and harmonic frequency [1].The spectrum of a Hamiltonian describing this system is obtained. The configuration space wave functions of the model is expressed in terms of the generalised Laguerre polynomials. To diagonalize the time-dependent Hamiltonian we employ the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants. To this end, we introduce an unitary transformation in the framework of…
We provide theory and formal insight on the Green function quantization method for absorptive and dispersive spatial-inhomogeneous media in the context of dielectric media. We show that a fundamental Green function identity, which appears, e.g., in the fundamental commutation relation of the electromagnetic fields, is also valid in the limit of non-absorbing media. We also demonstrate how the zero-point field fluctuations yields a non-vanishing surface term in configurations without absorption, when using a more formal procedure of the Green function quantization method. We then apply the pres…
The continuous transition from a low resolution quantum nondemolition measurement of light field intensity to a precise measurement of photon number is described using a generalized measurement postulate. In the intermediate regime, quantization appears as a weak modulation of measurement probability. In this regime, the measurement result is strongly correlated with the amount of phase decoherence introduced by the measurement interaction. In particular, the accidental observation of half integer photon numbers preserves phase coherence in the light field, while the accidental observation of …
In this work we present a very simple approach to input-output relations in optical cavities, limiting ourselves to one- and two-photon states of the field. After field quantization, we derive the non-unitary transformation between {\em Inside} and {\em Outside} annihilation and creation operators. Then we express the most general two-photon state generated by {\em Inside} creation operators, through base states generated by {\em Outside} creation operators. After renormalization of coefficients of inside two-photon state, we calculate the outside photon-number probability distribution in a ge…
The quantization of optical fields in vacuum has been known for decades, but extending the field quantization to lossy and dispersive media in nonequilibrium conditions has proven to be complicated due to the position-dependent electric and magnetic responses of the media. In fact, consistent position-dependent quantum models for the photon number in resonant structures have only been formulated very recently and only for dielectric media. Here we present a general position-dependent quantized fluctuational electrodynamics (QFED) formalism that extends the consistent field quantization to desc…
A direct calculation of the elements of the photon polarization vector for arbitrary momentum in the helicity basis shows that it is not a vector but a complex bivector. The bivector real and imaginary parts can be directly equated with electromagnetic field amplitudes and the associated field equations are the Maxwell equations in time-imaginary space. The bivector field exhibits a phase freedom (Berry, or geometric phase) dependent on the rotation history of the field or observer. Phase freedom is not intrinsically present in the longitudinal excitations of the field and a general argument c…
An electron-positron pair ($e^- e^+$) is created in vacuum above a critical electric field strength $E_{crt}$ which is quite large in the laboratory scale. The photon, thus the field, annihilates in the pair creation process. Here, we question if the pair creation (at $E=E_{crt}$) introduces a boundary condition in the electromagnetic state, e.g., similar to the one in angular or linear momentum. We show that introduction of such a reasonable condition yields approximately the well-known magnetic flux quanta which normally one obtains using different arguments.
Non-canonical quantization is based on certain reducible representations of canonical commutation relations. Relativistic formalism for electromagnetic non-canonical quantum fields is introduced. Unitary representations of the Poincaré group at the level of fields and states are explicitly given. Multi-photon and coherent states are introduced. Statistics of photons in a coherent state is Poissonian if an appropriately defined thermodynamic limit is performed. Radiation fields having a correct $S$ matrix are constructed. The $S$ matrix is given by a non-canonical coherent-state displacement op…
In the framework of the canonical quantization of the electromagnetic field, we impose as primary condition on the dynamics the positive definiteness of the energy spectrum. This implies that (Glauber) coherent states have to be considered for the longitudinal and the scalar photon fields. As a result we obtain that the relation holds which in the traditional approach is called the Gupta-Bleuler condition. Gauge invariance emerges as a property of the physical states. The group structure of the theory is recognized to be the one of $SU(2) \otimes SU(1,1)$.
We present a consistent, generally covariant quantization of light for non-vacuum birefringent, Lorentz-symmetry breaking electrodynamics in the context of the Standard Model Extension. We find that the number of light quanta in the field is not frame independent, and that the interaction of the quantized field with matter is necessarily birefringent. We also show that the conventional Lorenz gauge condition used to restrict the photon-mode basis to solutions of the Maxwell equations must be weakened to consistently describe Lorentz symmetry violation.
We develop a framework that provides a few-mode master equation description of the interaction between a single quantum emitter and an arbitrary electromagnetic environment. The field quantization requires only the fitting of the spectral density, obtained through classical electromagnetic simulations, to a model system involving a small number of lossy and interacting modes. We illustrate the power and validity of our approach by describing the population and electric field dynamics in the spontaneous decay of an emitter placed in a complex hybrid plasmonic-photonic structure.
The control of the interaction between several quantum emitters using nanophotonic structures holds great promise for quantum technology applications. However, the theoretical description of such processes for complex nanostructures is a highly demanding task as the electromagnetic (EM) modes are in principle described by a high-dimensional continuum. We here introduce an approach that permits a quantized description of the full EM field through a "minimal" number of discrete modes. This extends the previous work in [Medina et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 093601 (2021)] to the case of an arbitra…
It is shown that photon shot noise and radiation-pressure back-action noise are the sole forms of quantum noise in interferometric gravitational wave detectors that operate near or below the standard quantum limit, if one filters the interferometer output appropriately. No additional noise arises from the test masses' initial quantum state or from reduction of the test-mass state due to measurement of the interferometer output or from the uncertainty principle associated with the test-mass state. Two features of interferometers are central to these conclusions: (i) The interferometer output (t…
Polarized cross-correlation spectroscopy on a quantum dot charged with a single hole shows the sequential emission of photons with common circular polarization. This effect is visible without magnetic field, but becomes more pronounced as the field along the quantization axis is increased. We interpret the data in terms of electron dephasing in the X+ state caused by the Overhauser field of nuclei in the dot. We predict the correlation timescale can be increased by accelerating the emission rate with cavity-QED.
We introduce a second quantization scheme based on quasinormal modes, which are the dissipative modes of leaky optical cavities and plasmonic resonators with complex eigenfrequencies. The theory enables the construction of multi-plasmon/photon Fock states for arbitrary three-dimensional dissipative resonators and gives a solid understanding to the limits of phenomenological dissipative Jaynes-Cummings models. In the general case, we show how different quasinormal modes interfere through an off-diagonal mode coupling and demonstrate how these results affect cavity-modified spontaneous emission.…
The paper is an extension of quant-ph/9912102. The new framework is tested on the 2-photon spontaneous emission and blackbody radiation. The new effects are rather subtle. The probability of the 2-photon emission is shown to consist of a product of several terms: One which is identical to this from standard quantum optics and the remaining ones formally resembling detector inefficiencies (here arising from nontrivial vacuum structure). The blackbody distribution is indistinguishable from the Planck law for T<T_{critical} but for T>T_{critical} the maximum of the distribution gets lowered and s…
