We show how to eliminate the first-order effects of the spin-orbit interaction in the performance of a two-qubit quantum gate. Our procedure involves tailoring the time dependence of the coupling between neighboring spins. We derive an effective Hamiltonian which permits a systematic analysis of this tailoring. Time-symmetric pulsing of the coupling automatically eliminates several undesirable terms in this Hamiltonian. Well chosen pulse shapes can produce an effectively isotropic exchange gate, which can be used in universal quantum computation with appropriate coding.
We show how to create quantum gates of arbitrary speed between trapped ions, using a laser walking wave, with complete insensitivity to drift of the optical phase, and requiring cooling only to the Lamb-Dicke regime. We present pulse sequences that satisfy the requirements and are easy to produce in the laboratory.
We propose a pulsed dynamical decoupling protocol as the generator of tunable, fast, and robust quantum phase gates between two microwave-driven trapped ion hyperfine qubits. The protocol consists of sequences of $π$-pulses acting on ions that are oriented along an externally applied magnetic field gradient. In contrast to existing approaches, in our design the two vibrational modes of the ion chain cooperate under the influence of the external microwave driving to achieve significantly increased gate speeds. Our scheme is robust against the dominant noise sources, which are errors on the magn…
Fast entangling gates for trapped ions offer vastly improved gate operation times relative to implemented gates, as well as approaches to trap scaling. Gates on neighbouring ions only involve local ions when performed sufficiently fast, and we find that even a fast gate between distant ions with few degrees of freedom restores all the motional modes given more stringent gate speed conditions. We compare pulsed fast gate schemes, defined by a timescale faster than the trap period, and find that our proposed scheme has less stringent requirements on laser repetition rate for achieving arbitrary …
We present theoretical schemes for performing high-fidelity one- and two-qubit pulsed gates for a superconducting flux qubit. The "IBM qubit" consists of three Josephson junctions, three loops, and a superconducting transmission line. Assuming a fixed inductive qubit-qubit coupling, we show that the effective qubit-qubit interaction is tunable by changing the applied fluxes, and can be made negligible, allowing one to perform high fidelity single qubit gates. Our schemes are tailored to alleviate errors due to 1/f noise; we find gates with only 1% loss of fidelity due to this source, for pulse…
We present a simple technique to reduce the emission rate of higher-order photon events from pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The technique uses extra-cavity control over a mode locked ultrafast laser to simultaneously increase repetition rate and reduce the energy of each pulse from the pump beam. We apply our scheme to a photonic quantum gate, showing improvements in the non-classical interference visibility for 2-photon and 4-photon experiments, and in the quantum-gate fidelity and entangled state production in the 2-photon case.
We theoretically investigate the use of fast pulsed two-qubit gates for trapped ion quantum computing in a two-dimensional microtrap architecture. In one dimension, such fast gates are optimal when employed between nearest neighbours, and we examine the generalisation to a two-dimensional geometry. We demonstrate that fast pulsed gates are capable of implementing high-fidelity entangling operations between ions in neighbouring traps faster than the trapping period, with experimentally demonstrated laser repetition rates. Notably, we find that without increasing the gate duration, high-fidelity…
We proposed a scheme to realize a controlled-NOT quantum logic gate in a dimer of exchange coupled single-molecule magnets, $[\textrm{Mn}_4]_2$. We chosen the ground state and the three low-lying excited states of a dimer in a finite longitudinal magnetic field as the quantum computing bases and introduced a pulsed transverse magnetic field with a special frequency. The pulsed transverse magnetic field induces the transitions between the quantum computing bases so as to realize a controlled-NOT quantum logic gate. The transition rates between the quantum computing bases and between the quantum…
A quantum dot hybrid qubit formed from three electrons in a double quantum dot has the potential for great speed, due to presence of level crossings where the qubit becomes charge-like. Here, we show how to take full advantage of the level crossings in a pulsed gating scheme, which decomposes the spin qubit into a series of charge transitions. We develop one and two-qubit dc quantum gates that are simpler than the previously proposed ac gates. We obtain closed form solutions for the control sequences and show that these sub-nanosecond gates can achieve high fidelities.
We consider the two-step method [A. R. Kuzmak and V. M. Tkachuk, Phys. Lett. A 378 (2014) 1469] for preparation of an arbitrary quantum gate on two spins with anisotropic Heisenberg interaction. At the first step, the system evolves during some period of time. At the second step, we apply pulsed magnetic field individually to each spin. We obtain the conditions for realization of SWAP, iSWAP, $\sqrt{SWAP}$ and entangled gates. Finally, we consider the implementation of this method on the physical system of ultracold atoms in optical lattice.
The exchange coupling between quantum dot spin qubits is isotropic, which restricts the types of quantum gates that can be formed. Here, we propose a method for controlling anisotropic interactions between spins arranged in a bus geometry. The symmetry is broken by an external magnetic field, resulting in XXZ-type interactions that can efficiently generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states or universal gate sets for exchange-only quantum computing. Analysis of the bus ground state provides a link between quantum critical phenomena and the communication capacity.
Experimental realizations of two qubit entangling gates with trapped ions typically rely on addressing spectroscopically resolved motional sidebands, limiting gate speed to the secular frequency. Fast entangling gates using ultrafast pulsed lasers overcome this speed limit. This approach is based on state-dependent photon recoil kicks from a sequence of counter-propagating, resonant, ultrafast pulse pairs, which can allow sub-microsecond gate speeds. Here we demonstrate a key component of the ultrafast gate protocol, the coherent excitation of a 171Yb+ ion across the 2S1/2-2P1/2 transition wit…
Quantum computation is a continuously growing research area which is based on nature and resources of quantum mechanics, as superposition and entanglement. In its quantum circuits version, the use of convenient and appropriate gates is essential. But while those gates adopt convenient forms for computational algorithms, their design depends on specific quantum systems and stu? being used. These gates need manage quantum systems based on physical interactions ruled by quantum Hamiltonians. With this, gates design is restricted to properties and limitations of interactions and physical elements …
We study the quantum brachistochrone evolution for a system of two spins-$\frac{1}{2}$ described by an anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian without $zx$, $zy$ interacting couplings in magnetic field directed along the z-axis. This Hamiltonian realizes quantum evolution in two subspaces spanned by $\|\uparrow\uparrow\rangle$, $\|\downarrow\downarrow\rangle$ and $\|\uparrow\downarrow\rangle$, $\|\downarrow\uparrow\rangle$ separately and allows to consider the brachistochrone problem on each subspace separately. Using the evolution operator for this Hamiltonian we generate quantum gates, namely an …
We present pulsed electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) experiments which enable us to characterize the coupling between bismuth donor spin qubits in Si and the surrounding spin bath of 29Si impurities which provides the dominant decoherence mechanism (nuclear spin diffusion) at low temperatures (< 16 K). Decoupling from the spin bath is predicted and cluster correlation expansion simulations show near-complete suppression of spin diffusion, at optimal working points. The suppression takes the form of sharply peaked divergences of the spin diffusion coherence time, in contrast with previou…

Several logical qubits and quantum gates have been proposed for semiconductor quantum dots controlled by voltages applied to top gates. The different schemes can be difficult to compare meaningfully. Here we develop a theoretical framework to evaluate disparate qubit-gating schemes on an equal footing. We apply the procedure to two types of double-dot qubits: the singlet-triplet (ST) and the semiconducting quantum dot hybrid qubit. We investigate three quantum gates that flip the qubit state: a DC pulsed gate, an AC gate based on logical qubit resonance (LQR), and a gate-like process known as …
The universal quantum computation is obtained when there exists asymmetric anisotropic exchange between electron spins in coupled semiconductor quantum dots. The asymmetric Heisenberg model can be transformed into the isotropic model through the control of two local unitary rotations for the realization of essential quantum gates. The rotations on each qubit are symmetrical and depend on the strength and orientation of asymmetric exchange. The implementation of the axially symmetric local magnetic fields can assist the construction of quantum logic gates in anisotropic coupled quantum dots. Th…
The development of key devices and systems in quantum information technology, such as entangled particle sources, quantum gates and quantum cryptographic systems, requires a reliable and well-established method for characterizing how well the devices or systems work. We report our recent work on experimental characterization of pulsed entangled photonic states and photonic quantum channels, using the methods of state and process tomography. By using state tomography, we could reliably evaluate the states generated from a two-photon source under development and develop a highly entangled pulsed…
We propose a scalable design of entangling quantum gates for large ion crystals with the following desirable features: 1) The gate design is universal and applicable for large ion crystals of arbitrary sizes; 2) The gate has no speed limitation and can work outside of the Lamb-Dicke region; 3) The gate operates by driving from either continuous-wave or pulsed laser beams; 4) The gate is insensitive to slow variation of the laser optical phase and works under a thermal state for the ions' motion; 5) The intrinsic gate infidelity can be reduced to a level well below the threshold for fault-toler…
We present a method that combines continuous and pulsed microwave radiation patterns to achieve robust interactions among hyperfine trapped ions placed in a magnetic field gradient. More specifically, our scheme displays continuous microwave drivings with modulated phases, phase flips, and $π$ pulses. This leads to high-fidelity entangling gates which are resilient against magnetic field fluctuations, changes on the microwave amplitudes, and crosstalk effects. Our protocol runs with arbitrary values of microwave power, which includes the technologically relevant case of low microwave intensiti…
Full control over the spatio-temporal structure of quantum states of light is an important goal in quantum optics, to generate for instance single-mode quantum pulses or to encode information on multiple modes, enhancing channel capacities. Quantum light pulses feature an inherent, rich spectral broadband-mode structure. In recent years, exploring the use of integrated optics as well as source-engineering has led to a deep understanding of the pulse-mode structure of guided quantum states of light. In addition, several groups have started to investigate the manipulation of quantum states by me…
We present measurements on gate-defined double quantum dots in Ge-Si core-shell nanowires, which we tune to a regime with visible shell filling in both dots. We observe a Pauli spin blockade and can assign the measured leakage current at low magnetic fields to spin-flip cotunneling, for which we measure a strong anisotropy related to an anisotropic g-factor. At higher magnetic fields we see signatures for leakage current caused by spin-orbit coupling between (1,1)-singlet and (2,0)-triplet states. Taking into account these anisotropic spin-flip mechanisms, we can choose the magnetic field dire…
We propose and demonstrate a method to characterize a gated InGaAs single-photon detector (SPD). Ultrashort weak coherent pulses, from a mode-locked sub-picosecond pulsed laser, were used to measure photon counts, at varying arrival times relative to the start of the SPD gate voltage. The uneven detection probabilities within the gate window were used to estimate the afterpulse probability with respect to various detector parameters: excess bias, width of gate window and hold-off time. We estimated a lifetime of 2.1 microseconds for the half-life of trapped carriers, using a power-law fit to t…
We derive an encoded universality representation for a generalized anisotropic exchange Hamiltonian that contains cross-product terms in addition to the usual two-particle exchange terms. The recently developed algebraic approach is used to show that the minimal universality-generating encodings of one logical qubit are based on three physical qubits. We show how to generate both single- and two-qubit operations on the logical qubits, using suitably timed conjugating operations derived from analysis of the commutator algebra. The timing of the operations is seen to be crucial in allowing simpl…
A good qubit must have a coherence time long enough for gate operations to be performed. Avoided level crossings allow for clock transitions in which coherence is enhanced by the insensitivity of the transition to fluctuations in external fields. Because of this insensitivity, it is not obvious how to effectively couple qubits together while retaining clock-transition behavior. Here we present a scheme for using a heterodimer of two coupled molecular nanomagnets, each with a clock transition at zero magnetic field, in which all of the gate operations needed to implement one- and two-qubit gate…
We investigate anisotropic $XXZ$ Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains with control fields acting on one of the end spins, with the aim of exploring local quantum control in arrays of interacting qubits. In this work, which uses a recent Lie-algebraic result on the local controllability of spin chains with "always-on" interactions, we determine piecewise-constant control pulses corresponding to optimal fidelities for quantum gates such as spin-flip (NOT), controlled-NOT (CNOT), and square-root-of-SWAP ($\sqrt{\textrm{SWAP}}$). We find the minimal times for realizing different gates depending on the aniso…
Some of the most promising proposals for scalable solid-state quantum computing, e.g., those using electron spins in quantum dots or donor electron or nuclear spins in Si, rely on a two-qubit quantum gate that is ideally generated by an isotropic exchange interaction. However, an anisotropic perturbation arising from spin-orbit coupling is inevitably present. Previous studies focused on removing the anisotropy. Here we introduce a new universal set of quantum logic gates that takes advantage of the anisotropic perturbation. The price is a constant but modest factor in additional pulses. The ga…
It is shown that certain natural quantum logic gates, {\it i.e.} unitary time evolution matrices for spin-\frac{1}{2} quantum spins, can be represented as sums, with appropriate phases, over classical logic gates, in a direct analogy with the Feynman path integral representation of quantum mechanics. On the other hand, it is shown that a natural quantum gate obtained by analytically continuing the transfer matrix of the anisotropic nearest-neighbour Ising model to imaginary time, does not admit such a representation.
Spin systems controlled and probed by magnetic resonance have been valuable for testing the ideas of quantum control and quantum error correction. This paper introduces an X-band pulsed electron spin resonance spectrometer designed for high-fidelity coherent control of electron spins, including a loop-gap resonator for sub-millimeter sized samples with a control bandwidth ~ 40 MHz. Universal control is achieved by a single-sideband upconversion technique with an I-Q modulator and a 1.2 GS/s arbitrary waveform generator. A single qubit randomized benchmarking protocol quantifies the average err…
We study the low energy states of finite spin chains with isotropic (Heisenberg) and anisotropic (XY and Ising-like) exchange interaction with uniform and non-uniform coupling constants. We show that for an odd number of sites a spin cluster qubit can be defined in terms of the ground state doublet. This qubit is remarkably insensitive to the placement and coupling anisotropy of spins within the cluster. One- and two-qubit quantum gates can be generated by magnetic fields and inter-cluster exchange, and leakage during quantum gate operation is small. Spin cluster qubits inherit the long decohe…
Quantum computing (or generally, quantum information processing) is of prime interest for it potentially has a significant impact on present electronics and computations1-5. Essence of quantum computing is a direct usage of the superposition and entanglement of quantum mechanical states that are pronounced in nanoscopic particles such as atoms and molecules6, 7. On the other hand, many proposals regarding the realization of semiconductor quantum dot (QD) qubits8,9 and QD quantum gates10 were reported and several experimental clues were successfully found11-16. While these pioneering experiment…
We show that nuclear spin subsystems can be completely controlled via microwave irradiation of resolved anisotropic hyperfine interactions with a nearby electron spin. Such indirect addressing of the nuclear spins via coupling to an electron allows us to create nuclear spin gates whose operational time is significantly faster than conventional direct addressing methods. We experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of this method on a solid-state ensemble system consisting of one electron and one nuclear spin.
We demonstrate single-qubit operations by transporting a beryllium ion with a controlled velocity through a stationary laser beam. We use these to perform coherent sequences of quantum operations, and to perform parallel quantum logic gates on two ions in different processing zones of a multiplexed ion trap chip using a single recycled laser beam. For the latter, we demonstrate individually addressed single-qubit gates by local control of the speed of each ion. The fidelities we observe are consistent with operations performed using standard methods involving static ions and pulsed laser field…
Trapped ions are one of the most promising platforms for quantum computing due to the longest qubit coherence times and the highest gate fidelities. However, scaling the number of ions (qubits) in a linear Coulomb crystal is the key difficulty on the way to multi-qubit systems. One of the promising pathways to scale the number of qubits is to implement the pulsed non-adiabatic gates based on the sequence of State Dependent Kicks (SDKs). We have analytically and numerically studied the influence of coherent effects in the SDK sequence and, correspondingly, have deduced the influence of the indi…
Correct swap action can be realized via the control of the anisotropic Heisenberg interaction in solid-state quantum systems. The conditions of performing a swap are derived by the dynamics of arbitrary bipartite pure state. It is found that swap errors can be eliminated in the presence of symmetric anisotropy. In realistic quantum computers with unavoidable fluctuations, the gate fidelity of swap action is estimated. The scheme of quantum computation via the anisotropic Heisenberg interaction is implemented in a one dimensional quantum dots. The slanting and static magnetic field can be used …
We propose a deterministic, measurement-free implementation of a cubic phase gate for continuous-variable quantum information processing. In our scheme, the applications of displacement and squeezing operations allow us to engineer the effective evolution of the quantum state propagating through an optical Kerr nonlinearity. Under appropriate conditions, we show that the input state evolves according to a cubic phase Hamiltonian, and we find that the cubic phase gate error decreases inverse-quartically with the amount of quadrature squeezing, even in the presence of linear loss. We also show h…
Possibly, teleportation is the most representative quantum algorithm in the public domain. Nevertheless than this quantum procedure transmits only information than objects, its coverage is still very limited and easily subject to errors. Based on a fine control of quantum resources, particularly those entangled, the research to extend its coverage and flexibility is open, in particular on matter based quantum systems. This work shows how anisotropic Ising interactions could be used as natural basis for this procedure, based on a sequence of magnetic pulses driving Ising interaction, stating re…

A common approach to realize conditional-phase (CZ) gates in transmon qubits relies on flux control of the qubit frequency to make computational states interact with non-computational ones using a fast-adiabatic trajectory to minimize leakage. We develop a bipolar flux-pulsing method with two key advantages over the traditional unipolar variant. First, the action of the bipolar pulse is robust to long-timescale linear-dynamical distortions in the flux-control line, facilitating tuneup and ensuring atomic repeatability. Second, the flux symmetry of the transmon Hamiltonian makes the conditional…
We demonstrate coherent control of two nuclear spins mediated by the magnetic resonance of a hyperfine-coupled electron spin. This control is used to create a double nuclear coherence in one of the two electron spin manifolds, starting from an initial thermal state, in direct analogy to the creation of an entangled (Bell) state from an initially pure unentangled state. We identify challenges and potential solutions to obtaining experimental gate fidelities useful for quantum information processing in this type of system.
In a previous publication [1] we showed that it is possible to implement universal quantum computation with the anisotropic XY-Heisenberg exchange acting as a single interaction. To achieve this we used encodings of the states of the computation into a larger Hilbert space. This proof is non- constructive, however, and did not explicitly give the trade-offs in time that are required to implement encoded single qubit operations and encoded two-qubit gates. Here we explicitly give the gate-sequences needed to simulate these operations on encoded qubits and qutrits (three-level systems) and analy…
