Some of the most promising proposals for scalable solid-state quantum computing, e.g., those using electron spins in quantum dots or donor electron or nuclear spins in Si, rely on a two-qubit quantum gate that is ideally generated by an isotropic exchange interaction. However, an anisotropic perturbation arising from spin-orbit coupling is inevitably present. Previous studies focused on removing the anisotropy. Here we introduce a new universal set of quantum logic gates that takes advantage of the anisotropic perturbation. The price is a constant but modest factor in additional pulses. The gain is a scheme that is compatible with the naturally available interactions in spin-based solid-state quantum computers.
We present a quantum logic scheme to detect atomic and molecular ions in different states of angular momentum based on their magnetic $g$-factors. The state-dependent magnetic $g$-factors mean that electronic, rotational or hyperfine states may be distinguished by their Zeeman splittings in a given magnetic field. Driving motional sidebands of a chosen Zeeman splitting enables reading out the corresponding state of angular momentum with an auxillary logic ion. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we show that we can detect the ground electronic state of a ${^{174}}$Yb$^+$ ion using ${^{171}}…
The Dirac equation is extended for a relativistic electron in an orthorhombically-anisotropic conduction band. Its covariance is established with general proper and improper Lorentz transformations. In the non-relativistic limit, the kinetic and Zeeman energy terms of the Hamiltonian are both determined by the same three effective masses, and the quantum spin Hall effect is derived. This has important consequences for magnetic measurements of many classes of clean anisotropic semiconductors, metals, and superconductors. The Zeeman energy is vanishingly small for magnetic fields parallel to cle…
When an electron or hole is in a conduction band of a crystal, it can be very different from 2, depending upon the crystalline anisotropy and the direction of the applied magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. In fact, it can even be 0! To demonstrate this quantitatively, the Dirac equation is extended for a relativistic electron or hole in an orthorhombically-anisotropic conduction band with effective masses $m_j$ for $j=1,2,3$ with geometric mean $m_g=(m_1m_2m_3)^{1/3}$. The appropriate Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations are extended to evaluate the non-relativistic Hamiltonian to $O({\rm m}c^2)^{-4}$,…
Many systems used for quantum computing possess additional states beyond those defining the qubit. Leakage out of the qubit subspace must be considered when designing quantum error correction codes. Here we consider trapped ion qubits manipulated by Raman transitions. Zeeman qubits do not suffer from leakage errors but are sensitive to magnetic fields to first-order. Hyperfine qubits can be encoded in clock states that are insensitive to magnetic fields to first-order, but spontaneous scattering during the Raman transition can lead to leakage. Here we compare a Zeeman qubit ($^{174}$Yb$^+$) to…
Er-doped Si is a promising candidate for quantum information applications due to its telecom wavelength optical transition and its compatibility with Si nanofabrication technologies. Recent spectroscopic studies based on photoluminescence excitation have shown multiple well-defined lattice sites that Er occupies in Si. Here we report the first measurement of the Zeeman and hyperfine tensors of a single 167Er3+ ion in Si. All the obtained tensors are highly anisotropic with the largest value principal axes aligning in nearly the same direction, and the trace of the lowest crystal field level g-…

We demonstrate a two-qubit logic gate driven by near-field microwaves in a room-temperature microfabricated ion trap. We measure a gate fidelity of 99.7(1)\%, which is above the minimum threshold required for fault-tolerant quantum computing. The gate is applied directly to $^{43}$Ca$^+$ "atomic clock" qubits (coherence time $T_2^*\approx 50\,\mathrm{s}$) using the microwave magnetic field gradient produced by a trap electrode. We introduce a dynamically-decoupled gate method, which stabilizes the qubits against fluctuating a.c.\ Zeeman shifts and avoids the need to null the microwave field.
The universal quantum computation is obtained when there exists asymmetric anisotropic exchange between electron spins in coupled semiconductor quantum dots. The asymmetric Heisenberg model can be transformed into the isotropic model through the control of two local unitary rotations for the realization of essential quantum gates. The rotations on each qubit are symmetrical and depend on the strength and orientation of asymmetric exchange. The implementation of the axially symmetric local magnetic fields can assist the construction of quantum logic gates in anisotropic coupled quantum dots. Th…
It has recently been shown that one can perform quantum computation in a Heisenberg chain in which the interactions are 'always on', provided that one can abruptly tune the Zeeman energies of the individual (pseudo-)spins. Here we provide a more complete analysis of this scheme, including several generalizations. We generalize the interaction to an anisotropic form (incorporating the XY, or Forster, interaction as a limit), providing a proof that a chain coupled in this fashion tends to an effective Ising chain in the limit of far off-resonant spins. We derive the primitive two-qubit gate that…
Motional ground state cooling and internal state preparation are important elements for quantum logic spectroscopy (QLS), a class of quantum information processing. Since QLS does not require the high gate fidelities usually associated with quantum computation and quantum simulation, it is possible to make simplifying choices in ion species and quantum protocols at the expense of some fidelity. Here, we report sideband cooling and motional state detection protocols for $^{138}$Ba$^+$ of sufficient fidelity for QLS without an extremely narrowband laser or the use of a species with hyperfine str…
We present a multilayer surface-electrode ion trap with embedded 3D microwave circuitry for implementing entangling quantum logic gates. We discuss the electromagnetic full-wave simulation procedure that has led to the trap design and the characterization of the resulting microwave field-pattern using a single ion as a local field probe. The results agree with simulations within the uncertainty; compared to previous traps, this design reduces detrimental AC Zeeman shifts by three orders of magnitude. The design presented here can be viewed as an entangling gate component in a library for surfa…
We derive an encoded universality representation for a generalized anisotropic exchange Hamiltonian that contains cross-product terms in addition to the usual two-particle exchange terms. The recently developed algebraic approach is used to show that the minimal universality-generating encodings of one logical qubit are based on three physical qubits. We show how to generate both single- and two-qubit operations on the logical qubits, using suitably timed conjugating operations derived from analysis of the commutator algebra. The timing of the operations is seen to be crucial in allowing simpl…
We propose a fast and non-destructive spectroscopic method for single molecular ions that implements quantum logic schemes between an atomic ion and the molecular ion of interest. Our proposal relies on a hybrid coherent manipulation of the two-ion system, using optical or magnetic forces depending on the types of molecular levels to be addressed (Zeeman, rotational, vibrational or electronic degrees of freedom). The method is especially suited for the non-destructive precision spectroscopy of single molecular ions, and sets a starting point for new hybrid quantum computation schemes that comb…
It is shown that certain natural quantum logic gates, {\it i.e.} unitary time evolution matrices for spin-\frac{1}{2} quantum spins, can be represented as sums, with appropriate phases, over classical logic gates, in a direct analogy with the Feynman path integral representation of quantum mechanics. On the other hand, it is shown that a natural quantum gate obtained by analytically continuing the transfer matrix of the anisotropic nearest-neighbour Ising model to imaginary time, does not admit such a representation.
We study numerically the influence of non-resonant effects on the dynamics of a single $π$-pulse quantum CONTROL-NOT (CN) gate in a macroscopic ensemble of fo ur-spin molecules at room temperature. The four nuclear spins in each molecule r epresent a four-qubit register. The qubits are ``labeled'' by the characteristic frequencies, $ω_k$, ($k=0$ to 3) due to the Zeeman interaction of the nuclear spins with the magnetic field. The qubits interact with each other through an Ising interaction of strength $J$. T he paper examines the feasibility of implementing a single-pulse quantum CN gate in an…
We study theoretically the effects of qubit inhomogeneity on the quantum logic gate of qubit swap, which is an integral part of the operations of a quantum computer. Our focus here is to construct a robust pulse sequence for swap operation in the simultaneous presence of Zeeman inhomogeneity for quantum dot trapped electron spins and the finite-time ramp-up of exchange coupling in a double dot. We first present a geometric explanation of spin swap operation, mapping the two-qubit operation onto a single-qubit rotation. We then show that in this geometric picture a square-pulse-sequence can be …
We study the quantum computational power of a generic class of anisotropic solid state Hamiltonians. A universal set of encoded logic operations are found which do away with difficult-to-implement single-qubit gates in a number of quantum computer proposals, e.g., quantum dots and donor atom spins with anisotropic exchange coupling, quantum Hall systems, and electrons floating on helium. We show how to make the corresponding Hamiltonians universal by encoding one qubit into two physical qubits, and by controlling nearest neighbor interactions.
A self-contained approach to studying the unitary evolution of coupled qubits is introduced, capable of addressing a variety of physical systems described by exchange Hamiltonians containing Rabi terms. The method automatically determines both the Weyl chamber steering trajectory and the accompanying local rotations. Particular attention is paid to the case of anisotropic exchange with tracking controls, which is solved analytically. It is shown that, if computational subspace is well isolated, any exchange interaction can always generate high-fidelity, single-step controlled-NOT (CNOT) logic,…
The development of a new era of quantum devices requires an understanding of how paramagnetic dopants or impurity spins behave in crystal hosts. Here, we describe a new spectroscopic technique which uses traditional Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) combined with the measurement of a large population of electromagnetic Whispering Gallery (WG) modes. This allows the characterization of the physical parameters of paramagnetic impurity ions in the crystal at low temperatures. We present measurements of two ultra-high purity sapphires cooled to 20 mK in temperature, and determine the concentration of …
Universal ion trap computation on Decoherence Free Subspaces (DFS) using only two qubit operations is presented. The DFS is constructed for the collective dephasing model. Encoded single and two-qubit logical operations are implemented via the Sorensen-Molmer interaction. Alternation of the effective Hamiltonians for two particular phase configurations of control fields approximates an anisotropic exchange interaction. This is universal over suitable encodings of one logical qubit into three physical qubits which are also DFS under collective decoherence.
The requirement of performing both single-qubit and two-qubit operations in the implementation of universal quantum logic often leads to very demanding constraints on quantum computer design. We show here how to eliminate the need for single-qubit operations in a large subset of quantum computer proposals: those governed by isotropic and XXZ,XY-type anisotropic exchange interactions. Our method employs an encoding of one logical qubit into two physical qubits, while logic operations are performed using an analogue of the NMR selective recoupling method.
The two-electron exchange coupling in a nanowire double quantum dot (DQD) is shown to possess Moriya's anisotropic superexchange interaction under the influence of both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings (SOCs) and a Zeeman field. We reveal the controllability of the anisotropic exchange interaction via tuning the SOC and the direction of the external magnetic field. The exchange interaction can be transformed into an isotropic Heisenberg interaction, but the uniform magnetic field becomes an effective inhomogeneous field whose measurable inhomogeneity reflects the SOC strength. M…
Here we report an experimental realization of optimal phase-covariant quantum cloning machine with a single electron spin in solid state system at room temperature. The involved three states of two logic qubits are encoded physically in three levels of a single electron spin with two Zeeman sub-levels at a nitrogen-vacancy defect center in diamond. The preparation of input state and the phase-covariant quantum cloning transformation are controlled by two independent microwave fields. The average experimental fidelity reaches 85.2% which is very close to theoretical optimal fidelity 85.4% and i…
Hole spins in semiconductor quantum dots or bound to acceptor impurities show promise as potential qubits, partly because of their weak and anisotropic hyperfine couplings to proximal nuclear spins. Since the hyperfine coupling is weak, it can be difficult to measure. However, an anisotropic hyperfine coupling can give rise to a substantial spin-echo envelope modulation that can be Fourier-analyzed to accurately reveal the hyperfine tensor. Here, we give a general theoretical analysis for hole-spin-echo envelope modulation (HSEEM), and apply this analysis to the specific case of a boron-accept…
We propose a geometric phase gate in a decoherence-free subspace with trapped ions. The quantum information is encoded in the Zeeman sublevels of the ground-state and two physical qubits to make up one logical qubit with ultra long coherence time. Single- and two-qubit operations together with the transport and splitting of linear ion crystals allow for a robust and decoherence-free scalable quantum processor. For the ease of the phase gate realization we employ one Raman laser field on four ions simultaneously, i.e. no tight focus for addressing. The decoherence-free subspace is left neither …
