In the first half we show an interesting relation between coherent states and the Bell states in the case of spin 1/2, which was suggested by Fivel. In the latter half we treat generalized coherent states and try to generalize this relation to get several generalized Bell states. Our method is based on a geometry and our task may give a hint to open a deep relation between a coherence and an entanglement.
We make a brief comment on measurement of quantum operators with degenerate eigenstates and apply to quantum teleportation. We also try extending the quantum teleportation by Bennett et al [5] to more general situation by making use of generalized Bell states.
We review classical properties of harmonic-oscillator coherent states. Then we discuss which of these classical properties are preserved under the group-theoretic generalization of coherent states. We prove that the generalized coherent states of quantum systems with Lie-group symmetries are the unique Bell states, i.e., the pure quantum states preserving the fundamental classical property of satisfying Bell's inequality upon splitting.
We study an asymmetric form of two-mode entangled coherent state (ECS), where the two local amplitudes have different values, for testing the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (Bell-CHSH) inequality. We find that the asymmetric ECSs have obvious advantages over the symmetric form of ECSs in testing the Bell-CHSH inequality. We further study an asymmetric strategy in distributing an ECS over a lossy environment and find that such a scheme can significantly increase violation of the inequality.
We consider quantum systems, whose dynamical symmetry groups are semisimple Lie groups, which can be split or decay into two subsystems of the same symmetry. We prove that the only states of such a system that factorize upon splitting are the generalized coherent states. Since Bell's inequality is never violated by the direct product state, when the system prepared in the generalized coherent state is split, no quantum correlations are created. Therefore, the generalized coherent states are the unique Bell states, i.e., the pure quantum states preserving the fundamental classical property of s…
The so-called quasi-Bell entangled coherent states in a thermal environment are studied. In the analysis, we assume thermal noise affects only one of the two modes of each state. First the matrix representation of the density operators of the quasi-Bell entangled coherent states in a thermal environment is derived. Secondly we investigate the entanglement property of one of the quasi-Bell entangled coherent states with thermal noise. At that time a lower bound of the entanglement of formation for the state is computed. Thirdly the minimax discrimination problem for two cases of the binary set …
We study GHZ-type and W-type three-mode entangled coherent states. Both the types of entangled coherent states violate Mermin's version of the Bell inequality with threshold photon detection (i.e., without photon counting). Such an experiment can be performed using linear optics elements and threshold detectors with significant Bell violations for GHZ-type entangled coherent states. However, to demonstrate Bell-type inequality violations for W-type entangled coherent states, additional nonlinear interactions are needed. We also propose an optical scheme to generate W-type entangled coherent st…
Non-classical states of light field have been exploited to provide marvellous results in quantum information science. Effectiveness of nonclassical states depends on whether physical parameter as signal is continuous or digital. Here we present an investigation on the potential of quasi Bell state of entangled coherent states in quantum reading of the classical digital memory which was pioneered by Pirandola. This is a typical example of discrete quantum discrimination. We show that the quasi Bell state gives the error free performance in the quantum reading that cannot be obtained by any clas…
We find that Bell's inequality can be significantly violated (up to Tsirelson's bound) with two-mode entangled coherent states using only homodyne measurements. This requires Kerr nonlinear interactions for local operations on the entangled coherent states. Our example is a demonstration of Bell-inequality violations using classical measurements. We conclude that entangled coherent states with coherent amplitudes as small as 0.842 are sufficient to produce such violations.
We study Bell inequality tests with entanglement between a coherent-state field in a cavity and a two-level atom. In order to detect the cavity field for such a test, photon on/off measurements and photon number parity measurements, respectively, are investigated. When photon on/off measurements are used, at least 50% of detec- tion efficiency is required to demonstrate violation of the Bell inequality. Photon number parity measurements for the cavity field can be effectively performed using ancillary atoms and an atomic detector, which leads to large degrees of Bell violations up to Cirel'son…
We review and compare Bell-state measurement and quantum teleportation schemes using linear optics with three different types of resources, i.e., two-photon pairs, entangled coherent states and hybrid entangled states. Remarkably, perfect teleportation with linear optics is possible in principle based on a hybrid approach that combines two-photon pairs and entangled coherent states. It turns out that hybrid approach allows to perform Bell-state measurement and local Pauli operations in a deterministic way, while it requires photon number resolving measurements.
Bell state analyzer (BSA) is one of the most crucial apparatus in photonic quantum information processing. While linear optics provide a practical way to implement BSA, it provides unavoidable errors when inputs are not ideal single-photon states. Here, we propose a simple method to deduce the BSA for single-photon inputs using weak coherent pulses. By applying the method to Reference-Frame-Independent Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution, we experimentally verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the method.
The Bell basis, a set of maximally entangled biphoton state, is a critical prerequisite towards quantum information processing, and many quantum applications have highlighted the requirement for the manipulation of high-dimensional Bell basis. While the Bell states can be created by using ingenious single-photon quantum gates, its implementation complexity in higher dimensions is significantly increased. Here we present an elaborate approach to show that the adaptive pump modulation enable the efficient preparation of Bell basis in arbitrary-dimensional Hilbert space. A complete set of four-di…
A class of self-similar sets of entangled quantum states is introduced, for which a recursive definition is provided. These sets, the "Bell gems," are defined by the subsystem exchange symmetry characteristic of the Bell states. Each Bell gem is shown to be an orthonormal basis of maximally entangled elements. A non-trivial example Bell gem is presented. Quantum circuits for producing the elements of this example from the computational basis states are provided.
In this paper, we present a generalized Bell inequality for mixed states. The distinct characteristic is that the inequality has variable bound depending on the decomposition of the density matrix. The inequality has been shown to be more refined than the previous Bell inequality. It is possible that a separable mixed state can violate the Bell inequality.
We derive Bell inequalities for graph states by generalizing the approach proposed by Ardehali [Phys. Rev. A 46, 5375 (1992)] for Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. Using this method, we demonstrate that Bell inequalities with nonstabilizer observables are often superior to the optimal GHZ-Mermin-type (or stabilizer-type) Bell inequalities.
We analyze effects of squeezing upon superpositions of coherent states (SCSs) and entangled coherent states (ECSs) for Bell-inequality tests. We find that external squeezing can always increase the degrees of Bell violations, if the squeezing direction is properly chosen, for the case of photon parity measurements. On the other hand, when photon on/off measurements are used, the squeezing operation can enhance the degree of Bell violations only for moderate values of amplitudes and squeezing. We point out that a significant improvement is required over currently available squeezed SCSs in orde…
We employ a straightforward relation between mutually unbiased and Bell bases to extend the latter in terms of a direct construction for the former. We analyze in detail the properties of these new generalized Bell states, showing that they constitute an appropriate tool for testing entanglement in bipartite multiqudit systems.
We derive a multipartite generalized Bell inequality which involves the entire range of settings for each of the local observers. Especially, it is applied to show non-local behavior of a six-qubit mixture of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger correlations stronger than previous Bell inequalities. For certain noise admixture to the correlations an explicit local realistic model exists in the case of a standard Bell experiment. Bell experiments with many local settings reveal the non-locality of the state. It turns out that the new inequality is more stringent than many other Bell inequalities in the …
We show that the generalized Bell-type inequality, explicitly involving rotational symmetry of physical laws, is very efficient in distinguishing between true N-particle quantum correlations and correlations involving less particles. This applies to various types of generalized partial separabilities. We also give a rigorous proof that the new Bell inequalities are maximally violated by the GHZ states, and find a very handy description of the N-qubit correlation function.
The notion of equivalence of maximally entangled bases of bipartite d-dimensional Hilbert spaces is introduced. An explicit method of inequivalent bases construction is presented.
We propose a generalized structure of Bell inequalities for arbitrary d-dimensional bipartite systems, which includes the existing two types of Bell inequalities introduced by Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 040404 (2002)] and Son-Lee-Kim [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 060406 (2006)]. We analyze Bell inequalities in terms of correlation functions and joint probabilities, and show that the coefficients of correlation functions and those of joint probabilities are in Fourier transform relations. We finally show that the coefficients in the generalized structure determine the cha…
We introduce a complete Bell measurement on atomic qubits based on two photon interactions with optical cavities and discrimination of coherent states of light. The dynamical system is described by the Dicke model for two three-level atoms interacting in two-photon resonance with a single-mode of the radiation field, which is known to effectively generate a non-linear two-photon interaction between the field and two states of each atom. For initial coherent states with large mean photon number, the field state is well represented by two coherent states at half revival time. For certain product…
First a generalized Bell-inequality for different times and for different quasi-spin states is developed. We focus on special quasi-spin eigenstates and times. The inequality based on a local realistic theory is violated by the CP-violating parameter, if the quantum theory is used to recalculate the probabilities. Next the quantum mechanical probabilities are modified by the decoherence approach which enables the initial state to factorize spontaneously. In this way we get a lower limit for the decoherence parameter ζ, which measures the degree of decoherence. This result is compared with the …
In this letter, we show that the measure of entanglement using the generalized Bell inequality and the distance between states coincide when we use the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. Our conclusions apply to the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with interaction between the first neighbors.
We study the problem of distinguishing maximally entangled quantum states by using local operations and classical communication (LOCC). A question of fundamental interest is whether any three maximally entangled states in $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d (d\geq 4)$ are distinguishable by LOCC. In this paper, we restrict ourselves to consider the generalized Bell states. And we prove that any three generalized Bell states in $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d (d\geq 4)$ are locally distinguishable.
We provide a method to describe quantum nonlocality for $n$-qubit systems. By treating the correlation function as an $n$-index tensor, we derive a generalized Bell inequality. Taking generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state for example, we calculate quantum prediction under a series of measurement settings involving various angle parameters. We reveal the exact relationship between quantum prediction and the angle parameters. We show that there exists a set of optimal measurement settings and find the corresponding maximal quantum prediction for $n$-qubit generalized GHZ states. As…
An efficient and economical scheme is proposed for the perfect quantum teleportation of n-qubit non-maximally entangled state of generalized Bell-type. A Bell state is used as the quantum channel in the proposed scheme. It is also shown that the controlled teleportation of this n-qubit state can be achieved by using a GHZ state or a GHZ-like state as quantum channel. The proposed schemes are economical because for the perfect and controlled teleportation of n-qubit non-maximally entangled state of generalized Bell-type we only need a Bell state and a tripartite entangled state respectively. It…
A procedure is developed to automatically correct the bit flip and the arbitrary phase change errors in Generalized Bell states (GBS). The phase and parity characteristics of the GBS are encoded in ancilla bits without altering the state under consideration. The same information is then used to correct the state at a different point, through appropriate unitrary control operations. It is also shown that the distributed/indirect measurements on ancilla can yield the error syndrome. The restricted error correction circuit obtained for N-qubit entangled states of the Bell type, are generalized fo…
We studied the distinguishability of generalized Bell states under local operations and classical communication. We introduced the concept of maximally commutative set (MCS), subset of generalized Pauli matrices whose elements are mutually commutative and there is no other generalized Pauli matrix that is commute with all the elements of this set. We found that MCS can be considered as a detector for local distinguishability of set $\mathcal{S}$ of generalized Bell states. In fact, we got an efficient criterion. That is, if the difference set of $\mathcal{S}$ is disjoint with or completely con…
Finite dimensional representations of extended Weyl-Heisenberg algebra are studied both from mathematical and applied viewpoints. They are used to define unitary phase operator and the corresponding eigenstates (phase states). It is also shown that the unitary depolarizers can be constructed in a general setting in terms of phase operators. Generation of generalized Bell states using the phase operator is presented and their expressions in terms of the elements of mutually unbiased bases are given.
Spin-exchange collisions in hot vapours are generally regarded as a decoherence mechanism. In contrast, we show that linear and non-linear spin-exchange coupling can lead to the generation of atomic coherence in a Bell-Bloom magnetometer. In particular, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that non-linear spin exchange coupling, acting in an analogous way to a wave-mixing mechanism, can create new modes of coherent excitation which inherit the magnetic properties of the natural Larmor coherence. The generated coherences further couple via linear spin-exchange interaction, leading to…
Using the generalized Bell states and controlled not gates, we introduce an enatanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) of d-level states (qudits). In case of eavesdropping, Eve's information gain is zero and a quantum error rate of (d-1)/d is introduced in Bob's received qudits, so that for large d, comparison of only a tiny fraction of received qudits with the sent ones can detect the presence of Eve.
In the paper [Phys. Rev. A 65, 052331(2002)], an entanglement-based quantum key distribution protocol for d-level systems was proposed. However, in this Comment, it is shown that this protocol is insecure for a special attack strategy.
In this paper we present a study of the quantum phase estimation problem employing continuous-variable, entangled squeezed coherent (quasi-Bell) states as probe states. We show that their inherent squeezing and entanglement properties might bring advantages, increasing the precision of phase estimation compared to protocols which employ other continuous variable states e.g., two-mode, entangled coherent states or single-mode, squeezed states. We also analyze the phase estimation process considering: i) a linear (unitary) perturbation, and ii) dissipation, and conclude that the use of entangled…
It is well known that the maximal violation of the Bell's inequality for a two-qubit system is related to the entanglement formation in terms of a concurrence. However, a generalization of this relation to an $n$-qubit state has not been found. In the paper, we demonstrate some extensions of the relation between the upper bound of the Bell's violation and a {\it generalized} concurrence in several $n$-qubit states. In particular, we show the upper bound of the Bell's violation can be expressed as a function of the generalized concurrence, if a state can be expressed in terms of two variables. …
The coherent-state qubit is a promising candidate for optical quantum information processing due to its nearly-deterministic nature of the Bell-state measurement (BSM). However, its non-orthogonality incurs difficulties such as failure of the BSM. One may use a large amplitude ($α$) for the coherent state to minimize the failure probability, but the qubit then becomes more vulnerable to dephasing by photon loss. We propose a hardware-efficient concatenated BSM (CBSM) scheme with modified parity encoding using coherent states with reasonably small amplitudes ($|α| \lessapprox 2$), which simulta…
We prove that the action of the Yangian algebra Y(sl_N) is better described by the principal generators on the tensor product of the fundamental representation and its dual. The generalized Bell states or maximally entangled states are permuted by the principal generators in a dramatically simple manner on the tensor product. Under the Yangian symmetry the new quantum number J^2 is also explicitly computed, which gives an explanation for these maximally entangled states.
Several authors have recently claimed that Bell's inequalities (BI) do not apply to certain types of generalized local hidden variables (HV) models. These claims are rejected, by means of a proof of BI valid for a very broad class of local HV models (deterministic or stochastic, with or without memory, time dependent or time independent, setting dependent or setting independent, and even allowing classical communication between the wings of the experiment). The precise meaning of the locality requirement is clarified during the proof. The exact roles of the two assumptions that amount to Bell'…
Local distinguishability of sets of generalized Bell states (GBSs) is investigated. We first clarify the conditions such that a set of GBSs can be locally transformed to a certain type of GBS set that is easily distinguishable within local operations and one-way classical communication. We then show that, if the space dimension $d$ is a prime, these conditions are necessary and sufficient for sets of $d$ GBSs in $\mathbb{C}^d \otimes \mathbb{C}^d$ to be locally distinguishable. Thus we obtain a simple computable criterion for local distinguishability of sets of $d$ GBSs in prime dimension $d$.
We derive a Bell inequality based on a generalized quasiprobability function which is parameterized by one non-positive real value. Two types of known Bell inequalities formulated in terms of the Wigner and Q functions are included as limiting cases. We investigate violations of our Bell inequalities for single photon entangled states and two-mode squeezed vacuum states when varying the detector efficiency. We show that the Bell inequality for the Q function allows the lowest detection efficiency for violations of local realism.
In a recent comment \cite{ch1} it has been claimed that an entangled-based quantum key distribution protocol proposed in \cite{zhang} and its generalization to d-level systems in \cite{v1} are insecure against an attack devised by the authors of the comment. We invalidate the arguments of the comment and show that the protocols are still secure.
In the paper, a pair of dual operators is introduced with which a dual pair of generalized displacement operators is constructed. With these entities it is shown that the Barut - Girardello and Klauder - Perelomov generalized coherent states are dual states. The characteristics of these coherent states are constructed, separately and comparatively.
A method for performing nonlocal interferometry using phase-entangled macroscopic coherent states is described. The required entanglement can be generated using weak nonlinearities while Bell's inequality can be violated using single photons as a probe. The entanglement is relatively robust against photon loss and Bell's inequality can be violated over a relatively large distance in optical fibers despite the fact that a large number of photons are absorbed in the process.
Liquid phase NMR is a general purpose test-bed for developing methods of coherent control relevant to quantum information processing. Here we extend these studies to the coherent control of logical qubits and in particular to the unitary gates necessary to create entanglement between logical qubits. We report an experimental implementation of a conditional logical gate between two logical qubits that are each in decoherence free subspaces that protect the quantum information from fully correlated dephasing.

The phenomenon of quantum steering in bipartite quantum systems can be reduced to the question whether or not the first party can perform measurements such that the conditional states on the second party can be explained by a local hidden state model. Clearly, the answer to this depends on the measurements which the first party is able to perform. We introduce a local hidden state model explaining the conditional states for all generalized measurements on Bell-diagonal states of two qubits. More precisely, it is known for the restricted case of projective measurements and Bell-diagonal states …
