We propose a simple scheme for highly efficient nonlinear interaction between two weak optical fields. The scheme is based on the attainment of electromagnetically induced transparency simultaneously for both fields via transitions between magnetically split F=1 atomic sublevels, in the presence of two driving fields. Thereby, equal slow group velocities and symmetric cross-coupling of the weak fields over long distances are achieved. By simply tuning the fields, this scheme can either yield giant cross-phase modulation or ultrasensitive two-photon switching.
Spin squeezing inequalities (SSI) represent a major tool to probe quantum entanglement among a collection of few-level atoms, and are based on collective spin measurements and their fluctuations. Yet, for atomic ensembles of spin-$j$ atoms and ultracold spinor gases, many experiments can image the populations in all Zeeman sublevels $s=-j, -j+1, \dots, j$, potentially revealing finer features of quantum entanglement not captured by SSI. Here we present a systematic approach which exploits Zeeman-sublevel population measurements in order to construct novel entanglement criteria, and illustrate …
Raman sideband cooling of a 138Ba+ ion using a Zeeman interval
We demonstrate a novel method based on the Zeeman splitting of electronic spins to improve the performance for temperature sensing of negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in multiple-poly diamond. The theoretical model for selection principle of resonance peaks corresponding to a single NV axis for determining the temperature dependence is clarified. The spectral linewidth is effectively narrowed and the thermometer is insensitive to magnetic field fluctuations. Repeatability and accuracy of the relationship calibration between the zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameter D and tempera…
We predict a dynamical resonant effect, which is driven by externally applied linear and quadratic Zeeman fields, in a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. The Bose-Einstein condensate is assumed to be initialized in some superposed state of Zeeman sublevels and subject to a sudden shift of the trapping potential. It is shown that the time-averaged center-of-mass oscillation and the spin polarizations of the Bose-Einstein condensate exhibit remarkable resonant peaks when the Zeeman fields are tuned to certain strengths. The underlying physics behind this resonance can be traced …

Computational crystal-field models have provided consistent models of both electronic and Zeeman-hyperfine structure for several rare earth ions. These techniques have not yet been applied to the Zeeman-hyperfine structure of Eu$^{3+}$ because modeling the structure of the $J=0$ singlet levels in Eu$^{3+}$ requires inclusion of the commonly omitted lattice electric quadrupole and nuclear Zeeman interactions. Here, we include these terms in a computational model to fit the crystal field levels and the Zeeman-hyperfine structure of the $^7F_0$ and $^5D_0$ states in three Eu$^{3+}$ sites: the C$_…
