We provide several schemes to construct the continuous-variable SWAP gate and present a Hermitian generalized many-body continuous controlled^n-NOT gate. We introduce and study the hybrid controlled-NOT gate and controlled-SWAP gate, and physical realizations of them are discussed in trapped-ion systems. These continuous-variable and hybrid quantum gates may be used in the corresponding continuous-variable and hybrid quantum computations.
We introduce quantum hybrid gates that act on qudits of different dimensions. In particular, we develop two representative two-qudit hybrid gates (SUM and SWAP) and many-qudit hybrid Toffoli and Fredkin gates. We apply the hybrid SUM gate to generating entanglement, and find that operator entanglement of the SUM gate is equal to the entanglement generated by it for certain initial states. We also show that the hybrid SUM gate acts as an automorphism on the Pauli group for two qudits of different dimension under certain conditions. Finally, we describe a physical realization of these hybrid gat…
Compared with a qubit, a qudit (i.e., $d$-level or $d$-state quantum system) provides a larger Hilbert space to store and process information. On the other hand, qudit-based hybrid quantum computing usually requires performing hybrid quantum gates with qudits different in their nature or in their encoding format. In this work, we consider the qutrit case, i.e., the case for a qudit with $d$=3. We propose a simple method to realize a hybrid quantum controlled-SUM gate with one superconducting (SC) qutrit and a cat-state qutrit. This gate plus single-qutrit gates form a universal set of ternary …
High-efficiency quantum information processing is equivalent to the fewest quantum resources and the simplest operations by means of logic qubit gates. Based on the reflection geometry of a single photon interacting with a three-level $Λ$-typle atom-cavity system, we present some refined protocols for realizing controlled-not (CNOT), Fredkin, and Toffoli gates on hybrid systems. The first control qubit of our gates is encoded on a flying photon, and the rest qubits are encoded on the atoms in optical cavity. Moreover, these quantum gates can be extended to the optimal synthesis of multi-qubit …
Current implementations of quantum logic gates can be highly faulty and introduce errors. In order to correct these errors, it is necessary to first identify the faulty gates. We demonstrate a procedure to diagnose where gate faults occur in a circuit by using a hybridized quantum-and-classical K-Nearest-Neighbors (KNN) machine-learning technique. We accomplish this task using a diagnostic circuit and selected input qubits to obtain the fidelity between a set of output states and reference states. The outcomes of the circuit can then be stored to be used for a classical KNN algorithm. We numer…
Quantum information processing with hybrid protocols making use of discrete- and continuous-variable currently attracts of great interest because of its promising applications in scalable quantum computer and distant quantum network. By inducing a giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity between two cavities, we propose a general protocol for hybrid quantum gate and quantum entanglement with high fidelity between a stationary, discrete photonic qubit and a flying photonic state. Interestingly, our protocol can be used to conduct a controlled-Z quantum gate between a stationary microwave photon stored in …
We present the dipole induced transparency (DIT) of a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center embedded in a photonic crystal cavity coupled to two waveguides, and it is obvious with the robust and flexible reflectance and transmittance difference of circularly polarized lights between the uncoupled and the coupled cavities even in the bad cavity regime (the Purcell regime). With this DIT, we propose two universal hyperparallel hybrid photonic quantum logic gates, including a hybrid hyper-controlled-not gate and a hybrid hyper-Toffoli gate, on photon systems in both the polarization and the spatial-mod…
The high fidelity storage, distribution and processing of quantum information prefers qubits with different physical properties. Thus, hybrid quantum gates interfacing different types of qubits are essential for the realization of complex quantum network structures. A Rydberg-atom based physical quantum CZ gate is proposed to hybridly process the polarisation-encoded single-photon optical qubit and the "Schroedinger cat" microwave qubit. The degradation of the fidelity under the influence of various noise channels, such as microwave cavity loss, sponetanous emission of atom states, and non-adi…
We present a protocol for Interleaved Randomized Benchmarking of arbitrary quantum gates using Monte Carlo sampling of quantum states. It is generally applicable, including non-Clifford gates while preserving key advantages of Randomized Benchmarking such as error amplification as well as independence from state preparation and measurement errors. This property is crucial for implementations in many contemporary systems. Although the protocol scales exponentially in the number of qubits, it is superior to direct Monte Carlo sampling of the average gate fidelity in both the total number of expe…
One of the main challenges in building a quantum processor is to characterize the environmental noise. Noise characterization can be achieved by exploiting different techniques, such as randomization where several sequences of random quantum gates are applied to the qubit under test to derive statistical characteristics about the affecting noises. A scalable and robust algorithm able to benchmark the full set of Clifford gates using randomization techniques is called randomized benchmarking. In this study, we simulated randomized benchmarking protocols in a semiconducting all-electrical three-…
Hybrid quantum gates hold great promise for quantum information processing since they preserve the advantages of different quantum systems. Here we present compact quantum circuits to deterministically implement controlled-NOT, Toffoli, and Fredkin gates between a flying photon qubit and diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers assisted by microcavities. The target qubits of these universal quantum gates are encoded on the spins of the electrons associated with the diamond NV centers and they have long coherence time for storing information, and the control qubit is encoded on the polarizations o…
We present some deterministic schemes to construct universal quantum gates, that is, controlled- NOT, three-qubit Toffoli, and Fredkin gates, between flying photon qubits and stationary electron-spin qubits assisted by quantum dots inside double-sided optical microcavities. The control qubit of our gates is encoded on the polarization of the moving single photon and the target qubits are encoded on the confined electron spins in quantum dots inside optical microcavities. Our schemes for these universal quantum gates on a hybrid system have some advantages. First, all the gates are accomplished…
We present two deterministic schemes for constructing a CNOT gate and a Toffoli gate on photon-atom and photon-atom-atom hybrid quantum systems assisted by bad cavities, respectively. They are achieved by cavity-assisted photon scattering and work in the intermediate coupling region with bad cavities, which relaxes the difficulty of their implementation in experiment. Also, bad cavities are feasible for fast quantum operations and reading out information. Compared with previous works, our schemes do not need any auxiliary qubits and measurements. Moreover, the schematic setups for these gates …
Tracing the dynamics of a quantum system using a mesoscopic device is an important topic of interest nowadays. Here we show how a mesoscopic mechanical oscillator steers the dynamics of a coupled two-atom system and gives rise to a two-qubit SWAP gate. We have theoretically studied a generic hybrid atom-optomechanical system where two identical atoms in $Λ$ configuration are trapped inside the cavity and the cavity mode mediates the interaction between the atoms and the mechanical oscillator. Adiabatic elimination of the lossy channels is adopted which in turn gives rise to an effective Hamilt…
We propose and demonstrate a quantum control scheme for hybrid quantum registers that can reduce the operation time, and therefore the effects of relaxation, compared to existing implementations. It combines resonant excitation pulses with periods of free precession under the internal Hamiltonian of the qubit system. We use this scheme to implement quantum gates like controlled-NOT operations on electronic and nuclear spins of the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. As a specific application, we transfer population between electronic and nuclear spin qubits and use it to measure the Rabi oscil…
We theoretically propose a circuit QED system implemented with triple-leg stripline resonator (TSR). Unlikely from linear stripline resonator, the fundamental intra-cavity microwave modes of the TSR are two-fold degenerate. When a superconducting qubit is placed near one of the TSR legs, one fundamental mode is directly coupled to the qubit, while the other one remains uncoupled. Our system closely resembles an optical cavity QED system, where an atom in a cavity couples only to the incident photon with a specific polarization by placing a polarization beamsplitter in front of the optical cavi…
Hybrid quantum gates have recently drawn considerable attention. They play significant roles in connecting quantum information processors with qubits of different encoding and have important applications in the transmission of quantum states between a quantum processor and a quantum memory. In this work, we propose a single-step implementation of a multi-target-qubit controlled-NOT gate with one superconducting (SC) qubit simultaneously controlling $n$ target cat-state qubits. In this proposal, the gate is implemented with $n$ microwave cavities coupled to a three-level SC qutrit. The two logi…
Hybrid qubits have recently drawn intensive attention in quantum computing. We here propose a method to implement a universal controlled-phase gate of two hybrid qubits via two three-dimensional (3D) microwave cavities coupled to a superconducting flux qutrit. For the gate considered here, the control qubit is a microwave photonic qubit (particle-like qubit), whose two logic states are encoded by the vacuum state and the single-photon state of a cavity, while the target qubit is a cat-state qubit (wave-like qubit), whose two logic states are encoded by the two orthogonal cat states of the othe…
We explore the implementation of hybridly protected quantum operations combining the merits of holonomy, dynamical decoupling approach and dephasing-free feature based on a simple and experimentally achievable spin model. The implementation of the quantum operations can be achieved in different physical systems with controllable parameters. The protected quantum operations are hence controllable, well-suited for resolving various quantum computation tasks, such as executing quantum error-correction codes or quantum error mitigation. Our scheme is based on experimentally achievable Hamiltonian …
We propose a scheme for entanglement distribution among different single atoms trapped in separated cavities. In our scheme, by reflecting an input coherent optical pulse from a cavity with a single trapped atom, a controlled phase-shift gate between the atom and the coherent optical pulse is achieved. Based on this gate and homodyne detection, we construct an $n$-qubit parity gate and show its use for distribution of a large class of entangled states in one shot, including the GHZ state $\left\vert GHZ_{n}\right\rangle $, W state $\left\vert W_{n}\right\rangle $, Dicke state $\left\vert D_{n,…
We present a method that combines continuous and pulsed microwave radiation patterns to achieve robust interactions among hyperfine trapped ions placed in a magnetic field gradient. More specifically, our scheme displays continuous microwave drivings with modulated phases, phase flips, and $π$ pulses. This leads to high-fidelity entangling gates which are resilient against magnetic field fluctuations, changes on the microwave amplitudes, and crosstalk effects. Our protocol runs with arbitrary values of microwave power, which includes the technologically relevant case of low microwave intensiti…
We suggest a combined atomic/molecular system for quantum computation, which takes advantage of highly developed techniques to control atoms and recent experimental progress in manipulation of ultracold molecules. We show that two atoms of different species in a given site, {\it e.g.}, in an optical lattice, could be used for qubit encoding, initialization and readout, with one atom carrying the qubit, the other enabling a gate. In particular, we describe how a two-qubit phase gate can be realized by transferring a pair of atoms into the ground rovibrational state of a polar molecule with a la…

We present a hybrid model of the unitary-evolution-based quantum computation model and the measurement-based quantum computation model. In the hybrid model part of a quantum circuit is simulated by unitary evolution and the rest by measurements on star graph states, thereby combining the advantages of the two standard quantum computation models. In the hybrid model, a complicated unitary gate under simulation is decomposed in terms of a sequence of single-qubit operations, the controlled-Z gates, and multi-qubit rotations around the z-axis. Every single-qubit- and the controlled-Z gate are rea…
We gather and examine in detail gate decomposition techniques for continuous-variable quantum computers and also introduce some new techniques which expand on these methods. Both exact and approximate decomposition methods are studied and gate counts are compared for some common operations. While each having distinct advantages, we find that exact decompositions have lower gate counts whereas approximate techniques can cover decompositions for all continuous-variable operations but require significant circuit depth for a modest precision.
The continuous-variable controlled-Z gate is a canonical two-mode gate for universal continuous-variable quantum computation. It is considered as one of the most fundamental continuous-variable quantum gates. Here we present a scheme for realizing continuous-variable controlled-Z gate between two optical beams using an atomic ensemble. The gate is performed by simply sending the two beams propagating in two orthogonal directions twice through a spin-squeezed atomic medium. Its fidelity can run up to one if the input atomic state is infinitely squeezed. Considering the noise effects due to atom…
We propose an experimental scheme for the cloning machine of continuous quantum variables through a network of parametric amplifiers working as input-output four-port gates.
Quantum dot hybrid qubits exploit an extended charge-noise sweet spot that suppresses dephasing and has enabled the experimental achievement of high-fidelity single-qubit gates. However, current proposals for two-qubit gates require tuning the qubits away from their sweet spots. Here, we propose a two-hybrid-qubit coupling scheme, based on exchange interactions, that allows the qubits to remain at their sweet spots at all times. The interaction is controlled via the inter-qubit tunnel coupling. By simulating such gates in the presence of realistic quasistatic and $1\!/\!f$ charge noise, we sho…
We propose a novel hybrid quantum gate between an atom and a microwave photon in a superconducting coplanar waveguide cavity by exploiting the strong resonant microwave coupling between adjacent Rydberg states. Using experimentally achievable parameters gate fidelities $> 0.99$ are possible on sub-$μ$s timescales for waveguide temperatures below 40 mK. This provides a mechanism for generating entanglement between two disparate quantum systems and represents an important step in the creation of a hybrid quantum interface applicable for both quantum simulation and quantum information processing.
In a recent remarkable experiment [R. B. Patel et al., Science advances 2, e1501531 (2016)], a 3-qubit quantum Fredkin (i.e., controlled-SWAP) gate was demonstrated by using linear optics. Here we propose a simple experimental scheme by utilizing the dispersive interaction in superconducting quantum circuit to implement a hybrid Fredkin gate with a superconducting flux qubit as the control qubit and two separated quantum memories as the target qudits. The quantum memories considered here are prepared by the superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators or nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles. In …
Recent research in generalizing quantum computation from 2-valued qudits to d-valued qudits has shown practical advantages for scaling up a quantum computer. A further generalization leads to quantum computing with hybrid qudits where two or more qudits have different finite dimensions. Advantages of hybrid and d-valued gates (circuits) and their physical realizations have been studied in detail by Muthukrishnan and Stroud (Physical Review A, 052309, 2000), Daboul et al. (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 36 2525-2536, 2003), and Bartlett et al (Physical Review A, Vol.65, 052316, 2002). In both cases, a …
We propose a scalable scheme for optical quantum computing using measurement-induced continuous-variable quantum gates in a loop-based architecture. Here, time-bin-encoded quantum information in a single spatial mode is deterministically processed in a nested loop by an electrically programmable gate sequence. This architecture can process any input state and an arbitrary number of modes with almost minimum resources, and offers a universal gate set for both qubits and continuous variables. Furthermore, quantum computing can be performed fault-tolerantly by a known scheme for encoding a qubit …
We report on experimental implementation of a machine-learned quantum gate driven by a classical control. The gate learns optimal phase-covariant cloning in a reinforcement learning scenario having fidelity of the clones as reward. In our experiment, the gate learns to achieve nearly optimal cloning fidelity allowed for this particular class of states. This makes it a proof of present-day feasibility and practical applicability of the hybrid machine learning approach combining quantum information processing with classical control. Moreover, our experiment can be directly generalized to larger …
A quantum dot hybrid qubit formed from three electrons in a double quantum dot has the potential for great speed, due to presence of level crossings where the qubit becomes charge-like. Here, we show how to take full advantage of the level crossings in a pulsed gating scheme, which decomposes the spin qubit into a series of charge transitions. We develop one and two-qubit dc quantum gates that are simpler than the previously proposed ac gates. We obtain closed form solutions for the control sequences and show that these sub-nanosecond gates can achieve high fidelities.
In all the various proposals for quantum computers, a common feature is that the quantum circuits are expected to be made of cascades of unitary transformations acting on the quantum states. A framework is proposed to express these elementary quantum gates directly in terms of the control inputs entering into the continuous time forced Schrodinger equation.
Measurement-based one-way quantum computation (QC) using cluster states as resources provides an efficient model to perform computation and information processing of quantum codes. Arbitrary Gaussian QC can be implemented by sufficiently long single-mode and two-mode gate sequences. However, continuous variable (CV) gate sequences have not been realized so far due to an absence of cluster states larger than four submodes. Here we present the first CV gate sequence consisting of a single-mode squeezing gate and a two-mode controlled-phase gate based on a six-mode cluster state. The quantum prop…

Precision control over hybrid physical systems at the quantum level is important for the realization of many quantum-based technologies. In the field of quantum information processing (QIP) and quantum networking, various proposals discuss the possibility of hybrid architectures where specific tasks are delegated to the most suitable subsystem. For example, in quantum networks, it may be advantageous to transfer information from a subsystem that has good memory properties to another subsystem that is more efficient at transporting information between nodes in the network. For trapped-ions, a h…
The concrete schemes to realize three types of basic quantum logical gates using linear quadripartite cluster states of optical continuous variables are proposed. The influences of noises and finite squeezing on the computation precision are analyzed in terms of the fidelity of propagated quantum information through the continuous variable cluster states. The proposed schemes provide direct references for the design of experimental systems of one-way quantum computer based on the cluster entanglement of amplitude and phase quadratures of light.
In order to achieve universal quantum computation using continuous variables, one needs to jump out of the set of Gaussian operations and have a non-Gaussian element, such as the cubic phase gate. However, such a gate is currently very difficult to implement in practice. Here we introduce an experimentally viable 'repeat-until-success' approach to generating the cubic phase gate, which is achieved using sequential photon subtractions and Gaussian operations. We find that our scheme offers benefits in terms of the expected time until success, although we require a primitive quantum memory.
We numerically emulate noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices and determine the minimal hardware requirements for two-site hybrid quantum-classical dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We develop a circuit recompilation algorithm which significantly reduces the number of quantum gates of the DMFT algorithm and find that the quantum-classical algorithm converges if the two-qubit gate fidelities are larger than 99%. The converged results agree with the exact solution within 10%, and perfect agreement within noise-induced error margins can be obtained for two-qubit gate fidelities exceedi…
In this work, we decompose the time-evolution of the Bose-Hubbard model into a sequence of logic gates that can be implemented on a continuous-variable photonic quantum computer. We examine the structure of the circuit that represents this time-evolution for one-dimensional and two-dimensional lattices. The elementary gates needed for the implementation are counted as a function of lattice size. We also include the contribution of the leading dipole interaction term which may be added to the Hamiltonian, and its corresponding circuit.
We show how to efficiently simulate continuous-time quantum query algorithms that run in time T in a manner that preserves the query complexity (within a polylogarithmic factor) while also incurring a small overhead cost in the total number of gates between queries. By small overhead, we mean T within a factor that is polylogarithmic in terms of T and a cost measure that reflects the cost of computing the driving Hamiltonian. This permits any continuous-time quantum algorithm based on an efficiently computable driving Hamiltonian to be converted into a gate-efficient algorithm with similar run…
We propose a non-Gaussian continuous variable (CV) gate which is able to conditionally produce superposition of two "copies" of an arbitrary input state well separated in the coordinate and momentum plane - a Schrödinger cate state. The gate uses cubic phase state of an ancillary oscillator as a non-Gaussian resource, an entangling Gaussian gate, and homodyne measurement which provides nonunique information about the target system canonical variables, which is a key feature of the scheme. We show that this nonuniqueness manifests problems which may arise by extension of the Heisenberg picture …
We introduce a fully tuneable entangling gate for continuous-variable one-way quantum computation. We present a proof-of-principle demonstration by propagating two independent optical inputs through a three-mode linear cluster state and applying the gate in various regimes. The genuine quantum nature of the gate is confirmed by verifying the entanglement strength in the output state. Our protocol can be readily incorporated into efficient multi-mode interaction operations in the context of large-scale one-way quantum computation, as our tuning process is the generalisation of cluster state sha…
We apply the methodology of optimal control theory to the problem of implementing quantum gates in continuous variable systems with quadratic Hamiltonians. We demonstrate that it is possible to define a fidelity measure for continuous variable (CV) gate optimization that is devoid of traps, such that the search for optimal control fields using local algorithms will not be hindered. The optimal control of several quantum computing gates, as well as that of algorithms composed of these primitives, is investigated using several typical physical models and compared for discrete and continuous quan…
Semiconductor quantum dots in silicon are promising qubits because of long spin coherence times and their potential for scalability. However, such qubits with complete electrical control and fidelities above the threshold for quantum error correction have not yet been achieved. We show theoretically that the threshold fidelity can be achieved with ac gate operation of the quantum dot hybrid qubit. Formed by three electrons in a double dot, this qubit is electrically controlled, does not require magnetic fields, and runs at GHz gate speeds. We analyze the decoherence caused by 1/f charge noise …
The unavoidable effect of the environmental noise due to nuclear spins and charge traps is included in the study of the hybrid qubit dynamics. Hybrid qubit dues its name to the advantageous combination of manipulation speed of a charge qubit with the longevity of a spin qubit. It consists of three electrons confined through external gate voltages in a double quantum dot and deserves special interest in quantum computation applications due to its advantages in terms of fabrication, control and only electrical manipulation. Hybrid qubit is protected against global magnetic fluctuations since it …
We propose a theoretical scheme for realizing °exible two-qubit controlled phase gate. A transmission line resonator is used to induce the coupling between nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) in diamond and superconducting qubit. The N-V center acts as control qubit and the superconducting qubit as target qubit. Through adjusting external flux, we obtain desired coupling between random superconducting qubit and transmission line resonator. Moreover, our protocol might be implemented via the current experimental technology.
We provide a characterization and analysis of the effects of dissipation on oscillator assisted (qubus) quantum gates. The effects can be understood and minimized by looking at the dynamics of the signal coherence and its entanglement with the continuous variable probe. Adding loss in between successive interactions we obtain the effective quantum operations, providing a novel approach to loss analysis in such hybrid settings. We find that in the presence of moderate dissipation the gate can operate with a high fidelity. We also show how a simple iteration scheme leads to independent single qu…
As there is no quantum error correction code with universal set of transversal gates, several approaches have been proposed which, in combination of transversal gates, make universal fault-tolerant quantum computation possible. Magic state distillation, code switching, code concatenation and pieceable fault-tolerance are well-known examples of such approaches. However, the overhead of these approaches is one of the main bottlenecks for large-scale quantum computation. In this paper, a hybrid approach is proposed which combines the code concatenation technique with the other mentioned approache…
