It is shown in detail why the arguments put forward by Struyve and Baere (quant-ph/0108038) against my conclusions are incorrect.
Valentini [arXiv:0811.0810] has recently defended the de Broglie-Bohm pilot-wave version of quantum theory from the claim that it is essentially Everett theory encumbered with the redundant postulation of point particles. In this note, Valentini's central arguments are questioned.
In the above paper [1], it is claimed that Bohm's mechanics can be challenged by a simple gedanken experiment involving a protecting measurement. Here we show that this gedanken experiment can be justified without problem and without contradicting the axiom attributing a physical meaning to the Bohmian trajectorie
In the paper quant-ph/0503212, Barone and Halayel-Neto (BH) claim that charge quantization in quantum mechanics can be proven without the need for the existence of magnetic monopoles. In this paper it is argued that their claim is untrue.
Preceding Comment challenged my claim that potentials might be just auxiliary mathematical tools and that they are not necessary for explaining physical phenomena. The Comment did not confront my explanation without potentials of the Aharonov-Bohm effects appeared in the original paper, but stated that I cannot apply this explanation for seven other examples. In my reply I provide explanations using my method, of one of the examples, show that two other example are not relevant, and agree that the remaining examples require further analysis. However, I argue that none of the examples provide r…
We show that the violation of rotational symmetry for differential cross section for Aharonov-Bohm effect with nonstandard boundary conditions has been known for some time. Moreover, the results were applied to discuss the Hall effect and persistent currents of fermions in a plane pierced by a flux tube.
In a recent paper, Struyve et al. [Struyve W, De Baere W, De Neve J and De Weirdt S 2003 J. Phys. A 36 1525] attempted to show that the thought experiment proposed in [Golshani M and Akhavan O 2001 J. Phys. A 34 5259, quant-ph/0103101] cannot distinguish between standard and Bohmian quantum mechanics. Here, we want to show that, in spite of their objection, our conclusion still holds out.
In this Comment it is shown that it cannot be argued that in the magnetic AB effect there is no force acting on the particle, i.e., that the observed phase shift is entirely due to nonzero vector potential. In stationary resistive conductors carrying constant currents there are quasistatic surface charges, which generate not only the electric field inside the wire driving the current, but also a static electric field outside it. These external static electric fields have nothing to do with Boyer's force picture and with his result for the existence of a time delay.
We analyze recently published results about the Aharonov-Bohm effect for bound states from the interaction of the magnetic quadrupole moment of a neutral particle with axial fields. We show that the eigenvalues obtained by the authors from an arbitrary truncation of the Frobenius power series correspond to more than one model and, consequently, are unsuitable for drawing any sound physical conclusion. Besides, the prediction of allowed oscillator frequencies is a mere consequence of the truncation condition just mentioned.
Comment on "Energy-speed relationship of quantum particles challenges Bohmian mechanics"
Are the electromagnetic scalar and vector potentials dispensable? Lev Vaidman has suggested that local interactions of gauge-invariant quantities, e.g. magnetic torques, suffice for the description of all quantum electromagnetic phenomena. We analyze six thought experiments that challenge this suggestion. All of them have explanations in terms of $local$ interactions of gauge-dependent quantities, in addition, some have explanations in terms of nonlocal interactions of gauge-invariant quantities. We claim, however, that two of our examples have no gauge-invariant formal description and that, i…
In this Comment I point out some limitations of the proposal of Prezhdo and Brooksby for coupling quantum and classical degrees of freedom (Phys.Rev.Lett.86(2001)3215) if it is pushed too far.
In the original setting of the Aharonov-Bohm, the gauge invariant physical longitudinal mode of the vector potential, which is written by the gauge invariant physical current $(-e)\barψ{\boldsymbol γ} ψ$, gives the desired contribution to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. While the scalar mode of the vector potential, which changes under the gauge transformation so that it is the unphysical mode, give no contribution to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Then Aharonov-Bohm effect really occurs by the physical longitudinal mode in the original Aharonov-Bohm's setting. In the setting of Tonomura {\it et al.}, wh…
Kocsis et al. (Science, Reports 3 June 2011, p. 1170) state that the experimentally deduced average photon trajectories are identical to the particle trajectories of Bohm's quantum mechanics. No supporting evidence, however, was provided. The photon trajectories presented in their report do not converge to high probability regions, a familiar and necessary behavior of Bohm trajectories. We reanalyze their data and calculations, conclude that the average photon trajectories do indeed agree with Bohm, and discuss possible interpretations of this result.
It is shown that the principal results of a recent work by Khalilov are incorrect. These errors are attributable to the author's insistence that wave functions must be regular at the origin even when the relevant potential is singular at that point.
It is shown that the results of our paper are correct, although the use of the chirality operator $γ_5=σ_1$ in the paper is not correct, as fairly the authors of the Comment stated.
In this Reply we argue that (i) the Hamiltonian, Eq. (17) in our paper (Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 070405 (2012)), is definitely Lorentz invariant; (ii) the conditions of generating topological Aharonov-Casher(AC) and Scalar Aharonov-Bohm (SAB) effects are essential and physically meaningful; (iii) the Hamiltonians both in Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 2847 (1995) and arXiv:1311.4011 are not suitable to describe the polarized spinor particles.
A derivation of the Bohm model, and some general comments about it, are given. A modification of the model which is formally local and Lorentz-invariant is introduced, and its properties studied for a simple experiment.
In this Comment we point out (i) that the Hamiltonian, Eq. (17) in the Letter(Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 070405 (2012)), is not a relativistic Hamiltonian, (ii) then that the conditions in the Letter are irrelevant for a topological AC and SAB effects, and (iii) conclusively that the non-relativistic Hamiltonian employed by Peshkin and Lipkin (Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 2847 (1995)) has the same $U(1)_{mm}$ gauge structure for a fixed spin and then is not wrong, but their incorrect interpretation of the spin autocorrelations led to the incorrect conclusion.
We present comparative analysis of Gill-Weihs-Zeilinger-Zukowski arguments directed against Hess-Philipp anti-Bell arguments. In general we support Hess-Philipp viewpoint to the sequence of measurements in the EPR-Bohm experiments as stochastic time-like process. On the other hand, we support Gill-Weihs-Zeilinger-Zukowski arguments against the use of time-like correlations as the factor blocking the derivation of Bell-type inequalities. We presented our own time-analysis of measurements in the EPR-Bohm experiments based on the frequency approach to probability. Our analysis gives strong argume…
Comment on "Aharonov-Bohm Phase is Locally Generated Like All Other Quantum Phases"
In this reply, we show that when we apply standard distribution theory to the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, the resulting spaces of test functions would comply with the Hardy axiom only if classic results of Paley and Wiener, of Gelfand and Shilov, and of the theory of ultradistributions were wrong. As well, we point out several differences between the ``standard method'' of constructing rigged Hilbert spaces in quantum mechanics and the method used in Time Asymmetric Quantum Theory.
It has recently been suggested that an Aharonov-Bohm phase should be capable of detection using beams of neutral polarizable particles. A more careful analysis of the proposed experiment suffices to show, however, that it cannot be performed regardless of the strength of the external electric and magnetic fields.
Comment on "Association between quantum paradoxes based on weak values and a realistic interpretation of quantum measurements"
Bohmian Trajectories Within Hilbert Space Based Quantum Mechanics. Solution of the Measurement Problem
Interpreting Bohm-like quantum potentials in "Computing quantum waves exactly from classical action"
Horton, Dewdney, and Nesteruk [quant-ph/0103114] have proposed Bohm-type particle trajectories accompanying a Klein-Gordon wave function psi on Minkowski space. From two vector fields on space-time, W^+ and W^-, defined in terms of psi, they intend to construct a timelike vector field W, the integral curves of which are the possible trajectories, by the following rule: at every space-time point, take either W = W^+ or W = W^- depending on which is timelike. This procedure, however, is ill-defined as soon as both are timelike, or both spacelike. Indeed, they cannot both be timelike, but they ca…
