In this paper we present a new quantum-trajectory based treatment of quantum dynamics suitable for dissipative systems. Starting from a de Broglie/Bohm-like representation of the quantum density matrix, we derive and define quantum equations-of-motion for Liouville-space trajectories for a generalized system coupled to a dissipative environment. Our theory includes a vector potential which mixes forward and backwards propagating components and non-local quantum potential which continuously produces coherences in the system. These trajectories are then used to propagate an adaptive Lagrangian grid which carries the density matrix, $ρ(x,y)$, and the action, $A(x,y)$, thereby providing a complete hydrodynamic-like description of the dynamics.
Based on tensor network realizations of path integrals reducing exponential memory scaling to polynomial efficiency and a Liouville space implementation of a time-discrete quantum memory, we investigate a quantum system simultaneously exposed to two structured reservoirs. For this purpose, we employ a numerically exact quasi-2D tensor network combining both diagonal and off-diagonal system-reservoir interactions with a twofold memory for continuous and discrete retardation effects. As a possible example, we study the non-Markovian dynamical interplay between discrete photonic feedback and stru…
A nonlinear quantum-classical transition wave equation is proposed for dissipative systems within the Caldirola-Kanai model. Equivalence of this transition equation to a scaled Schrödinger equation is proved. The dissipative dynamics is then studied in terms of what we call scaled trajectories following the standard procedure used in Bohmian mechanics. These trajectories depend on a continuous parameter allowing us a smooth transition from Bohmian to classical trajectories. Arrival times and actual momentum distribution functions are also analyzed. The propagation of a Gaussian wave packet in …
Using the methods of quantum trajectories we investigate the effects of dissipative decoherence in a quantum computer algorithm simulating dynamics in various regimes of quantum chaos including dynamical localization, quantum ergodic regime and quasi-integrable motion. As an example we use the quantum sawtooth algorithm which can be implemented in a polynomial number of quantum gates. It is shown that the fidelity of quantum computation decays exponentially with time and that the decay rate is proportional to the number of qubits, number of quantum gates and per gate dissipation rate induced b…
Using Liouville space and superoperator formalism we consider pure stationary states of open and dissipative quantum systems. We discuss stationary states of open quantum systems, which coincide with stationary states of closed quantum systems. Open quantum systems with pure stationary states of linear oscillator are suggested. We consider stationary states for the Lindblad equation. We discuss bifurcations of pure stationary states for open quantum systems which are quantum analogs of classical dynamical bifurcations.
We develop a real-time Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo approach for the modeling of driven-dissipative open quantum systems. The method enables stochastic sampling of the Liouville-von-Neumann time evolution of the density matrix, thanks to a massively parallel algorithm, thus providing estimates of observables on the non-equilibrium steady state. We present the underlying theory, and introduce initiator technique and importance sampling to reduce the statistical error. Finally, we demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by applying it to the driven- dissipative two-dimen…
Dissipative quantum tunnelling through an inverted parabolic barrier is considered in the presence of an electric field. A Schrödinger-Langevin or Kostin quantum classical transition wave equation is used and applied resulting in a scaled differential equation of motion. A Gaussian wave packet solution to the resulting scaled Kostin nonlinear equation is assumed and compared to the same solution for the scaled linear Caldirola-Kanai equation. The resulting scaled trajectories are obtained at different dynamical regimes and friction cases, showing the gradual decoherence process in this open dy…
The evolution of a mixed quantum-classical system is expressed in the mapping formalism where discrete quantum states are mapped onto oscillator states, resulting in a phase space description of the quantum degrees of freedom. By defining projection operators onto the mapping states corresponding to the physical quantum states, it is shown that the mapping quantum-classical Liouville operator commutes with the projection operator so that the dynamics is confined to the physical space. It is also shown that a trajectory-based solution of this equation can be constructed that requires the simula…
We introduce a protocol to transfer excitations between two noninteracting qubits via purely dissipative processes (i.e., in the Lindblad master equation there is no coherent interaction between the qubits). The fundamental ingredients are the presence of collective (i.e. nonlocal) dissipation and unbalanced local dissipation rates (the qubits dissipate at different rates). The resulting quantum trajectories show that the measurement backaction changes the system wave function and induces a passage of the excitation from one qubit to the other. While similar phenomena have been witnessed for a…
Recently, several studies involving open quantum systems which possess a strong symmetry have observed that every individual trajectory in the Monte Carlo unravelling of the master equation will dynamically select a specific symmetry sector to freeze into in the long-time limit. This phenomenon has been termed dissipative freezing, and in this paper we argue, by presenting several simple mathematical perspectives on the problem, that it is a general consequence of the presence of a strong symmetry in an open system with only a few exceptions. Using a number of example systems we illustrate the…
In this paper fractional generalization of Liouville equation is considered. We derive fractional analog of normalization condition for distribution function. Fractional generalization of the Liouvile equation for dissipative and Hamiltonian systems was derived from the fractional normalization condition. This condition is considered considered as a normalization condition for systems in fractional phase space. The interpretation of the fractional space is discussed.
In this paper we give fully analytical description of the dynamics of a collection of $N$-Frenkel excitons in high density regime dispersively coupled to a single mode cavity field, in the presence of both exciton and cavity-field dissipations. By using excitonic operators as q-deformed bosonic operators for the system, we solve analytically the Liouville equation for the density operator at zero temperature and investigate the influence of the number of excitons and the effect of both dissipations on dynamical behavior of the system. We use the solution of master equation to explore the dissi…
We investigate two different kinds of quantum trajectories for a nonlinear photon resonator subject to two-photon pumping, a configuration recently studied for the generation of photonic Schroedinger cat states. In the absence of feedback control and in the strong-driving limit, the steady-state density matrix is a statistical mixture of two states with equal weight. While along a single photon-counting trajectory the systems intermittently switches between an odd and an even cat state, we show that upon homodyne detection the situation is different. Indeed, homodyne quantum trajectories revea…
We show that optimizing a quantum gate for an open quantum system requires the time evolution of only three states irrespective of the dimension of Hilbert space. This represents a significant reduction in computational resources compared to the complete basis of Liouville space that is commonly believed necessary for this task. The reduction is based on two observations: The target is not a general dynamical map but a unitary operation; and the time evolution of two properly chosen states is sufficient to distinguish any two unitaries. We illustrate gate optimization employing a reduced set o…
We apply the large-deviation method to study trajectories in dissipative quantum systems. We show that in the long time limit the statistics of quantum jumps can be understood from thermodynamic arguments by exploiting the analogy between large-deviation and free-energy functions. This approach is particularly useful for uncovering properties of rare dissipative trajectories. We also prove, via an explicit quantum mapping, that rare trajectories of one system can be realized as typical trajectories of an alternative system.
We propose a highly efficient mixed quantum-classical molecular dynamics scheme based on a solution of the quantum-classical Liouville equation (QCLE). By casting the equations of motion for the quantum subsystem and classical bath degrees of freedom onto an approximate set of coupled first-order differential equations for c-numbers, this scheme propagates the composite system in time deterministically in terms of independent classical-like trajectories. To demonstrate its performance, we apply the method to the spin-boson model, a photo-induced electron transfer model, and a Fenna-Matthews-Ol…
A quantum manifestation of chaotic classical dynamics is found in the framework of oscillatory numbers statistics for the model of nonlinear dissipative oscillator. It is shown by numerical simulation of an ensemble of quantum trajectories that the probability distributions and variances of oscillatory number states are strongly transformed in the order-to-chaos transition. The nonclassical, sub-Poissonian statistics of oscillatory excitation numbers is established for chaotic dissipative dynamics in the framework of Fano factor and Wigner functions. These results are proposed for testing and …
We propose an anharmonic oscillator driven by two periodic forces of different frequencies as a new time-dependent model for investigating quantum dissipative chaos. Our analysis is done in the frame of statistical ensemble of quantum trajectories in quantum state diffusion approach. Quantum dynamical manifestation of chaotic behavior, including the emergence of chaos, properties of strange attractors, and quantum entanglement are studied by numerical simulation of ensemble averaged Wigner function and von Neumann entropy.
Based on the non-autonomous quantum master equation, we investigate the dissipative and decoherence properties of the two-level atom system interacting with the environment of thermal quantum radiation fields. For this system, by a novel algebraic dynamic method, the dynamical symmetry of the system is found, the quantum master equation is converted into a Schrödinger-like equation and the non-Hermitian rate (quantum Liouville) operator of the master equation is expressed as a linear function of the dynamical u(2) generators. Furthermore, the integrability of the non-autonomous master equation…
We suggest an extension of the Hilbert Phase Space formalism, which appears to be naturally suited for application to the dissipative (open) quantum systems, such as those described by the non-stationary (time-dependent) Hamiltonians $H(x,p,t)$. A notion of quantum differential is introduced, highlighting the difference between the quantum and classical propagators. The equation of quantum dynamics of the generalised Wigner function in the extended Hilbert phase space is derived, as well as its classical limit, which serves as the generalisation of the classical Liouville equation for the doma…
We investigate the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of a hybrid open system consisting of one qubit and one qutrit by employing a stochastic Schrödinger equation to generate diffusive quantum trajectories. We have established an exact quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation for the dissipative qubit-qutrit system coupled to a bosonic heat bath at zero temperature. As an important application, the non-Markovian QSD equation is employed to simulate the entanglement decay and generation measured by negativity. Finally, some steady state properties of the hybrid system are also discussed.
We study the dissipative dynamics of a single quantum harmonic oscillator subjected to a parametric driving with in an effective Hamiltonian approach. Using Liouville von Neumann approach, we show that the time evolution of a parametrically driven dissipative quantum oscillator has a strong connection with the classical damped Mathieu equation. Based on the numerical analysis of the Monodromy matrix, we demonstrate that the dynamical instability generated by the parametric driving are reduced by the effect of dissipation. Further, we obtain a closed relationship between the localization of the…
We show that it is possible to modify the stationary state by a feedback control in a two-level dissipative quantum system. Based on the geometric control theory, we also analyze the effect of the feedback on the time-optimal control in the dissipative system governed by the Lindblad master equation. These effects are reflected in the function $Δ_A(\vec{x})$ and $Δ_B(\vec{x})$ that characterize the optimal trajectories, as well as the switching function $Φ(t)$ and $θ(t),$ which characterize the switching point in time for the time-optimal trajectory.
The agenda of Dissipative Quantum Chaos is to create a toolbox which would allow us to categorize open quantum systems into "chaotic" and "regular" ones. Two approaches to this categorization have been proposed recently. One of them is based on spectral properties of generators of open quantum evolution. The other one utilizes the concept of Lyapunov exponents to analyze quantum trajectories obtained by unraveling this evolution. By using two quantum models, we relate the two approaches and try to understand whether there is an agreement between the corresponding categorizations. Our answer is…
A new discrete model for energy relaxation of a quantum particle is described via a projection operator, causing the wave function collapse. Power laws for the evolution of the particle coordinate and momentum dispersions are derived. A new dissipative Schrodinger equation is proposed and solved for particular cases. A new dissipative Liouville equation is heuristically constructed.
We propose an analysis of the time-optimal control of a dissipative two-level quantum system whose dynamics is governed by the Lindblad equation. This simple system allows one to use tools of geometric control theory and to construct its optimal synthesis, i.e. to determine the set of all the optimal trajectories starting from a given initial point. We study different processes such as conversion of a pure state into a mixed state and purification of a mixed state. In particular cases, we show that dissipation is not undesirable and can help accelerating the control.
We discuss some features of the dissipative quantum model of brain in the frame of the formalism of quantum dissipation. Such a formalism is based on the doubling of the system degrees of freedom. We show that the doubled modes account for the quantum noise in the fluctuating random force in the system-environment coupling. Remarkably, such a noise manifests itself through the coherent structure of the system ground state. The entanglement of the system modes with the doubled modes is shown to be permanent in the infinite volume limit. In such a limit the trajectories in the memory space are c…
We propose an efficient numerical method to compute configuration averages of observables in disordered open quantum systems whose dynamics can be unraveled via stochastic trajectories. We prove that the optimal sampling of trajectories and disorder configurations is simply achieved by considering one random disorder configuration for each individual trajectory. As a first application, we exploit the present method to the study the role of disorder on the physics of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in two different regimes: (i) for strong interactions, we explore the dissipative physi…
The trapping of excitations in systems coupled to an environment allows to study the quantum to classical crossover by different means. We show how to combine the phenomenological description by a non-hermitian Liouville-von Neumann Equation (LvNE) approach with the numerically exact path integral Monte-Carlo (PIMC) method, and exemplify our results for a system of two coupled two-level systems. By varying the strength of the coupling to the environment we are able to estimate the parameter range in which the LvNE approach yields satisfactory results. Moreover, by matching the PIMC results wit…
In driven-dissipative systems, the presence of a strong symmetry guarantees the existence of several steady states belonging to different symmetry sectors. Here we show that, when a system with a strong symmetry is initialized in a quantum superposition involving several of these sectors, each individual stochastic trajectory will randomly select a single one of them and remain there for the rest of the evolution. Since a strong symmetry implies a conservation law for the corresponding symmetry operator on the ensemble level, this selection of a single sector from an initial superposition enta…
We extend the time-dependent variational principle to the setting of dissipative dynamics. This provides a locally optimal (in time) approximation to the dynamics of any Lindblad equation within a given variational manifold of mixed states. In contrast to the pure-state setting there is no canonical information geometry for mixed states and this leads to a family of possible trajectories --- one for each information metric. We focus on the case of the operationally motivated family of monotone riemannian metrics and show further, that in the particular case where the variational manifold is gi…
We discuss some problems of dissipative chaos for open quantum systems in the framework of semiclassical and quantum distributions. For this goal, we propose a driven nonlinear oscillator with time-dependent coefficients, i.e. with time-dependent Kerr-nonlinearity and time-modulated driving field. This model showing both regular and chaotic dynamics in the classical limit is realized in several experimental schemes. Quantum dissipative chaos is analyzed on the base of numerical method of quantum trajectories. Three quantities are studied: the Wigner function of oscillatory mode from the point …
We propose a model based on a generalized effective Hamiltonian for studying the effect of noise in quantum computations. The system-environment interactions are taken into account by including stochastic fluctuating terms in the system Hamiltonian. Treating these fluctuations as Gaussian Markov processes with zero mean and delta function correlation times, we derive an exact equation of motion describing the dissipative dynamics for a system of n qubits. We then apply this model to study the effect of noise on the quantum teleportation and a generic quantum controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate. For the…
In this review we deal with open (dissipative and stochastic) quantum systems within the Bohmian mechanics framework which has the advantage to provide a clear picture of quantum phenomena in terms of trajectories, originally in configuration space. The gradual decoherence process is studied from linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations through Bohmian trajectories as well as by using the so-called quantum-classical transition differential equation through scaled trajectories. This transition is governed by a continuous parameter, the transition parameter, covering these two extreme open dyn…
Dissipative adaptation is a general thermodynamic mechanism that explains self-organization in a broad class of driven classical many-body systems. It establishes how the most likely (adapted) states of a system subjected to a given drive tend to be those following trajectories of highest work absorption, followed by dissipated heat to the reservoir. Here, we extend the dissipative adaptation phenomenon to the quantum realm. We employ a fully-quantized exactly solvable model, where the source of work on a three-level system is a single-photon pulse added to a zero-temperature infinite environm…
A general framework for analyzing the recently discovered phase transitions in the steady state of dissipation-driven open quantum systems is still missing. In order to fill this gap we extend the so-called fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions to open systems whose steady state is a Gaussian Fermionic state. We endow the manifold of correlations matrices of steady-states with a metric tensor g measuring the distinguishability distance between solutions corresponding to different set of control parameters. The phase diagram can be then mapped out in terms of the scaling-behavior of g …
The scattering amplitude from a set of discrete states coupled to a continuum became known as the Fano profile, characteristic for its asymmetric lineshape and originally investigated in the context of photoionization. The generality of the model, and the proliferation of engineered nanostructures with confined states gives immense success to the Fano lineshape, which is invoked whenever an asymmetric lineshape is encountered. However, many of these systems do not conform to the initial model worked out by Fano in that i) they are subject to dissipative processes and ii) the observables are no…
We consider the quantum and classical Liouville dynamics of a non-integrable model of two coupled spins. Initially localised quantum states spread exponentially to the system dimension when the classical dynamics are chaotic. The long-time behaviour of the quantum probability distributions and, in particular, the parameter-dependent rates of relaxation to the equilibrium state are surprisingly well approximated by the classical Liouville mechanics even for small quantum numbers. As the accessible classical phase space becomes predominantly chaotic, the classical and quantum probability equilib…
We discuss topology in dissipative quantum systems from the perspective of quantum trajectories. The latter emerge in the unraveling of Markovian quantum master equations and/or in continuous quantum measurements. Ensemble-averaging quantum trajectories at the occurrence of quantum jumps, i.e., the jump times, gives rise to a discrete, deterministic evolution which is highly sensitive to the presence of dark states. We show for a broad family of translation-invariant collapse models that the set of dark state-inducing Hamiltonians imposes a nontrivial topological structure on the space of Hami…
A new approximate solution to the quantum-classical Liouville equation is derived starting from the formal solution of this equation in forward-backward form. The time evolution of a mixed quantum-classical system described by this equation is obtained in a coherent state basis using the mapping representation, which expresses $N$ quantum degrees of freedom in a 2N-dimensional phase space. The solution yields a simple non-Hamiltonian dynamics in which a set of $N$ coherent state coordinates evolve in forward and backward trajectories while the bath coordinates evolve under the influence of the…
We describe how to characterize dynamical phase transitions in open quantum systems from a purely dynamical perspective, namely, through the statistical behavior of quantum jump trajectories. This approach goes beyond considering only properties of the steady state. While in small quantum systems dynamical transitions can only occur trivially at limiting values of the controlling parameters, in many-body systems they arise as collective phenomena and within this perspective they are reminiscent of thermodynamic phase transitions. We illustrate this in open models of increasing complexity: a th…
Entanglement is the central resource in adiabatic quantum transport. Dephasing affects the availability of that resource by biasing trajectories, driving transitions between success and failure. This depletion of entanglement is important for the practical implementation of quantum technologies. We present a new perspective on the failure of adiabatic computation by understanding the failure of adiabatic transport as a dynamical phase transition. These ideas are demonstrated in a toy model of adiabatic quantum transport in a two spin system.
Using the methods of quantum trajectories we study effects of dissipative decoherence on the accuracy of the Grover quantum search algorithm. The dependence on the number of qubits and dissipation rate are determined and tested numerically with up to 16 qubits. As a result, our numerical and analytical studies give the universal law for decay of fidelity and probability of searched state which are induced by dissipative decoherence effects. This law is in agreement with the results obtained previously for quantum chaos algorithms.
Using the method of quantum trajectories we study a quantum chaotic dissipative ratchet appearing for particles in a pulsed asymmetric potential in the presence of a dissipative environment. The system is characterized by directed transport emerging from a quantum strange attractor. This model exhibits, in the limit of small effective Planck constant, a transition from quantum to classical behavior, in agreement with the correspondence principle. We also discuss parameter values suitable for implementation of the quantum ratchet effect with cold atoms in optical lattices.
