We investigate correlations between fluorescence photons emitted by single N-V centers in diamond with respect to the optical excitation power. The autocorrelation function shows clear photon antibunching at short times, proving the uniqueness of the emitting center. We also report on a photon bunching effect, which involves a trapping level. An analysis using rate-equations for the populations of the N-V center levels shows the intensity dependence of the rate equation coefficients.
The photon statistics of the light emitted from an atomic ensemble into a single field mode of an optical cavity is investigated as a function of the number of atoms. The light is produced in a Raman transition driven by a pump laser and the cavity vacuum [M.Hennrich et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 4672 (2000)], and a recycling laser is employed to repeat this process continuously. For weak driving, a smooth transition from antibunching to bunching is found for about one intra-cavity atom. Remarkably, the bunching peak develops within the antibunching dip. For saturated driving and a growing numb…
It is known that there is a transition from photon antibunching to bunching in the resonance fluorescence of a driven system of two two-level atoms with dipole-dipole interaction when the atomic distance decreases and the other parameters are kept fixed. We give a simple explanation for the underlying mechanism which in principle can also be applied to other systems. PACS numbers 42.50.Ar, 42.50Fx
Photon statistics divides light sources into three different categories, characterized by bunched, antibunched or uncorrelated photon arrival times. Single atoms, ions, molecules, or solid state emitters display antibunching of photons, while classical thermal sources exhibit photon bunching. Here we demonstrate a light source in free space, where the photon statistics depends on the direction of observation, undergoing a continuous crossover between photon bunching and antibunching. We employ two trapped ions, observe their fluorescence under continuous laser light excitation, and record the …
We investigate the transient dynamics of photon statistics through two-time correlation functions for optical fields. We find that the transient correlations at different time t yield a smooth transition from antibunching to bunching photon statistics in the weak system-environment coupling regime. In the strong-coupling regime, the two-time correlations exhibit bunching-antibunching oscillations that persists both in the transient process and in the steady-state limit. The photon bunching-antibunching oscillations is a manifestation of strong non-Markovian dynamics, where the system remains i…
We investigate the ground state of a few-body Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with varying interaction strengths and mass ratio. A bunching-antibunching crossover of the bosonic species for increasing interspecies' repulsion is observed within our fully correlated \textit{ab~initio} studies. Interestingly, this crossover is suppressed if the bosonic repulsion exceeds a critical value which strongly depends on the mass ratio. In order to unveil the physical origin of this crossover, we employ different levels of approximations: while a species mean-field approach can accou…
We have observed photon antibunching in the fluorescence light emitted from a single N-V center in diamond at room temperature. The possibility of generating triggerable single photons with such a solide state system is discussed
Addressing the feasibility of quantum communication with entangled electrons in an interacting many-body environment, we propose an interference experiment using a scattering set-up with an entangler and a beam splitter. It is shown that, due to electron-electron interaction, the fidelity of the entangled singlet and triplet states is reduced by z_F^2 in a conductor described by Fermi liquid theory. We calculate the quasiparticle weight factor z_F for a two-dimensional electron system. The current noise for electronic singlet states turns out to be enhanced (bunching behavior), while it is red…
We study the photon blockade of two-photon scattering in a one-dimensional waveguide, which contains two atoms coupled via the Rydberg interaction. We obtain the analytic scattering solution of photonic wave packets with the Laplace transform method. We examine the photon correlation by addressing the two-photon relative wave function and the second-order correlation function in the single- and two-photon resonance cases. It is found that, under the single-photon resonance condition, photon bunching and antibunching can be observed in the two-photon transmission and reflection, respectively. I…
In the present work we investigate the existence of multiple nonequilibrium steady states in a coherently driven XY lattice of dissipative two-level systems. A commonly used mean-field ansatz, in which spatial correlations are neglected, predicts a bistable behavior with a sharp shift between low- and high-density states. In contrast one-dimensional matrix product methods reveal these effects to be artifacts of the mean-field approach, with both disappearing once correlations are taken fully into account. Instead, a bunching-antibunching transition emerges. This indicates that alternative appr…
We demonstrate controlled entanglement routing between bunching and antibunching path-entangled two-photon states in an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (UMZI), in which the routing process is controlled by the relative phase difference in the UMZI. Regarding bunching and antibunching path-entangled two-photon states as two virtual ports, we can consider the UMZI as a controlled entanglement router, which bases on the coherent manipulation of entanglement. Half of the entanglement within the input two-photon state is coherently routed between the two virtual ports, while the other is los…
Photon antibunching in the light scattered by single quantum emitters is one of the hallmarks of quantum optics, providing an unequivocal demonstration of the quantized nature of the electromagnetic field. Antibunching can be intuitively understood by the need for a two-level system lying in its lower state after emitting a photon to be re-excited into the upper one before a second emission can take place. Here we show that such a picture breaks down in the ultrastrong light-matter coupling regime, when the coupling strength becomes comparable to the bare emitter frequency. Specialising to the…
Interference of single-photon wave packets at a beam splitter usually leads to an anticorrelation of the light intensity in the two output ports of the beam splitter. The effect may be regarded as ``bunching'' of the photons at the beam splitter and has widely been interpreted as a result of quantum mechanical interference between the probability amplitudes of indistinguishable bosonic particles. Here we show that when the wave packets are sufficiently distorted, then the opposite behaviour is observed, i.e., simultaneous clicks of the photodetectors in the two output ports are favoured, which…
We numerically show that time delayed coherent feedback controls the statistical output characteristics of driven quantum emitters. Quantum feedback allows to enhance or suppress a wide range of classical and nonclassical features of the emitted quantum light. As exemplary quantum system, we use a pumped cavity containing two emitters. By applying phase-selective feedback, we demonstrate that photon antibunching and bunching can be increased in orders of magnitude due to intrinsically and externally controllabe quantum interferences. Our modelling is based on a fully non-Markovian quantum simu…

The effects of photon bunching and antibunching correspond to the classical and quantum features of the electromagnetic field, respectively. No direct evidence suggests whether these effects can be potentially related to quantum entanglement. Here we design a cavity quantum electrodynamics model with two atoms trapped in to demonstrate the connections between the steady-state photon statistics and the two-atom entanglement . It is found that within the weak dissipations and to some good approximation, the local maximal two-atom entanglements perfectly correspond to not only the quantum feature…
The second order correlation function is traditionally used to characterize the photon statistics and to distinguish between classical and quantum states of light. In this article we study a simple setup offering the possibility to generate strong anti-bunched light. This is achieved by mixing on a beam splitter a coherent state with a state with a non-negative Wigner function, such as squeezed states or weak Schrödinger cat states. We elucidate the interference mechanism generating such strong antibunching and relate it to unconventionnal photon blockade. We also detail how this effect can be…
We obtain photon statistics by using a quantum jump approach tailored to a system in which one or two qubits are coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. Photons confined in the waveguide have strong interference effects, which are shown to play a vital role in quantum jumps and photon statistics. For a single qubit, for instance, bunching of transmitted photons is heralded by a jump that increases the qubit population. We show that the distribution and correlations of waiting times offer a clearer and more precise characterization of photon bunching and antibunching. Further, the waiting times…
We study the significance of Photon/Phonons bunching and antibunching on the dynamics of the quantum entanglement in the presence of coupled PT-symmetry systems with balanced/unbalanced gain and loss. We suggest a hybrid electromechanical system to realize a strong and tunable coupling between a Coplanar-Waveguide (CPW) microwave cavity and a nanomechanical resonator (NAMR) via a superconducting Transmon qubit. The hybrid electromechanical system consists of a non-hermitian Hamiltonian with balanced/unbalanced gain and loss. The interplay between the quantum entanglement and the -symmetry syst…
We have measured the second-order correlation function of the cavity-QED microlaser output and observed a transition from photon bunching to antibunching with increasing average number of intracavity atoms. The observed correlation times and the transition from super- to sub-Poisson photon statistics can be well described by gain-loss feedback or enhanced/reduced restoring action against fluctuations in photon number in the context of a quantum microlaser theory and a photon rate equation picture. However, the theory predicts a degree of antibunching several times larger than that observed, wh…
The quantum properties of the fluorescence light emitted by diamond nanocrystals containing a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) colored center is investigated. We have observed photon antibunching with very low background light. This system is therefore a very good candidate for the production of single photon on demand. In addition, we have measured larger NV center lifetime in nanocrystals than in the bulk, in good agreement with a simple quantum electrodynamical model.
Single photons from a coherent input are efficiently redirected to a separate output by way of a fiber-coupled microtoroidal cavity interacting with individual Cesium atoms. By operating in an overcoupled regime for the input-output to a tapered fiber, our system functions as a quantum router with high efficiency for photon sorting. Single photons are reflected and excess photons transmitted, as confirmed by observations of photon antibunching (bunching) for the reflected (transmitted) light. Our photon router is robust against large variations of atomic position and input power, with the obse…
In general, the typical approach to discriminate antibunching, bunching or superbunching categories make use of calculating the second-order coherence function ${g^{(2)}}(τ)$ of light. Although the classical light sources correspond to the specific degree of second-order coherence ${g^{(2)}}(0)$, it does not alone constitute a distinguishable metric to characterize and determine light sources. Here we propose a new mechanism to directly classify and generate antibunching, bunching or superbunching categories of light, as well as the classical light sources such as thermal and coherent light, b…
Photon correlations are investigated for a single laser-excited ion trapped in front of a mirror. Varying the relative distance between the ion and the mirror, photon correlation statistics can be tuned smoothly from an antibunching minimum to a bunching-like maximum. Our analysis concerns the non-Markovian regime of the ion-mirror interaction and reveals the field establishment in a half-cavity interferometer.
The statistics photons in the resonance fluorescence of a qubit excited by microwave and radio-frequency (RF) fields have been studied. It has been established that the coherent dissipative dynamics of the qubit with allowance for multiphoton emission and absorption of RF photons in each act of emission and absorption of a microwave photon results in periodic alternation of photon bunching and antibunching. It has been shown that periodically varying statistics photons can be smoothly transformed to the purely sub-Poisson statistics by varying the parameters of the RF field. The conditions for…
In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 063902 (2021)], M. A. Carroll et al. derived a model to analytically determine regimes of thermal, collective anti-bunching, and laser emission for emitters in a cavity. According to their model, nanolasers exhibit a distinct threshold at which the coherent laser field emerges from a bifurcation at a finite pump rate. The amplitude of this coherent field increases with a further increase in the pump rate. Such a behavior contrasts the usual view of the transition to lasing in single-mode high-$β$ nanolasers, according to which strong spontaneous emissi…
We explore the photon statistics of light emitted from a system comprising a single four--level atom strongly coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity mode which is driven by a coherent laser field. In the weak driving regime this system is found to exhibit a photon blockade effect. For intermediate driving strengths we find a sudden change in the photon statistics of the light emitted from the cavity. Photon antibunching switches to photon bunching over a very narrow range of intracavity photon number. It is proven that this sudden change in photon statistics occurs due to the existence of ro…
The development of materials processing techniques for optical diamond nanostructures containing a single color center is an important problem in quantum science and technology. In this work, we present the combination of ion implantation and top-down diamond nanofabrication in two scenarios: diamond nanopillars and diamond nanowires. The first device consists of a 'shallow' implant (~20nm) to generate Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers near the top surface of the diamond crystal. Individual NV centers are then isolated mechanically by dry etching a regular array of nanopillars in the diamond…
Correlations of detection events in two detectors are studied in case of linear excitation of the measuring apparatus. On the basis of classical probability theory and fundamental conservation laws, a general formula is derived for the two-point correlation functions for both bosons and fermions. The results obtained coincide with that derivable from quantum theory which uses quantized field amplitudes. By applying both the particle and the wave picture at the same time, the phenomena of photon bunching and antibunching, photon anticorrelation and fermion antibunching, measured in beam experim…
We report photon correlation measurements that allow us to observe unique signatures of biexcitons in a single self-assembled InAs quantum dot. Photon correlation measurements of biexciton emission exhibit both bunching and antibunching under continuous-wave excitation while only antibunching is observed under pulsed excitation. Cross-correlation between biexciton and single-exciton peaks reveal highly asymmetric features, demonstrating that biexciton and exciton emissions have strong correlations due to cascaded emission. The anticipated correlation between the polarization of exciton and bie…
A detailed study of the photophysical properties of several novel color centers in chemical vapor deposition diamond is presented. These emitters show narrow luminescence lines in the near infra-red. Single photon emission was verified with continuous and pulsed excitation with emission rates at saturation in the MHz regime, whilst direct lifetime measurements reveal excited state lifetimes ranging from 1-14 ns. In addition, a number of quantum emitters demonstrate two level behavior with no bunching present in the second order correlation function. An improved method of evaluating the quantum…
The zero-phonon transition rate of a nitrogen-vacancy center is enhanced by a factor of ~70 by coupling to a photonic crystal resonator fabricated in monocrystalline diamond using standard semiconductor fabrication techniques. Photon correlation measurements on the spectrally filtered zero-phonon line show antibunching, a signature that the collected photoluminescence is emitted primarily by a single nitrogen-vacancy center. The linewidth of the coupled nitrogen-vacancy center and the spectral diffusion are characterized using high-resolution photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation …
This work proposes to investigate the photon statistics of the light transmitted and reflected by a two-dimensional array of interacting atoms. The reflected beam is characterized by photon antibunching. On the other hand, in the transmitted beam the indistinguishability between the driving laser photons and the photons re-emitted by the atoms results in photon bunching. The overlap between the driving and scattered fields is enhanced by the cooperative optical response of the atomic array. In the examples used in this paper, up to 25\% of the transmitted photons are grouped in pairs. The simu…
Owing to their unsurpassed photostability, defects in solids may be ideal candidates for single photon sources. Here we report on generation of single photons by optical excitation of a yet unexplored defect in diamond, the nickel-nitrogen complex (NE8) centre. The most striking feature of the defect is its emission bandwidth of 1.2 nm at room temperature. The emission wavelength of the defect is around 800 nm, which is suitable for telecom fibres. In addition, in this spectral region little background light from the diamond bulk material is detected. Consequently, a high contrast in antibunch…
Photon blockade is a dynamical quantum-nonlinear effect that occurs in driven systems with an anharmonic excitation ladder. For a single atom strongly coupled to an optical cavity, we show that driving the atom gives a decisively larger optical nonlinearity than driving the cavity. This enhances single-photon blockade and allows for the implementation of two-photon blockade where the absorption of two photons suppresses the absorption of further photons. As a signature, we report on three-photon antibunching with simultaneous two-photon bunching observed in the light emitted from the cavity. O…
Single atom cavity quantum electrodynamics grants access to nonclassical photon statistics, while electromagnetically induced transparency exhibits a dark state of long coherence time. The combination of the two produces a new light field via four-wave mixing that shows long-lived quantum statistics. We observe the new field in the emission from the cavity as a beat with the probe light that together with the control beam and the cavity vacuum is driving the four-wave mixing process. Moreover, the control field allows us to tune the new light field from antibunching to bunching, demonstrating …
Fabrication of single nickel-nitrogen (NE8) defect centers in diamond by chemical vapor deposition is demonstrated. Under continuous-wave 745 nm laser excitation single defects were induced to emit single photon pulses at 797 nm with a linewidth of 1.5 nm at room temperature. Photon antibunching of single centers was demonstrated using a Hanbury-Brown and Twiss interferometer. Confocal images revealed approximately 10^6 optically active sites/cm^2 in the synthesized films. The fabrication of an NE8 based single photon source in synthetic diamond is important for fiber based quantum cryptograph…
We propose an all-optical scheme to control the photon statistics using hybrid quantum plasmonic system. With the aid of dressed states assisted quantum interference effects, it is shown that the photon correlations of a signal field can be continuously modulated from bunching to antibunching under the control of a pump field. Apart from the exact multimode model, a single-mode model and an analytical treatment are also provided to help us identify the roles of multimode coupling and quantum interference between probability amplitudes. The proposed scheme, in contrast to the cavity quantum ele…
Controlling the photon statistics of light is paramount for quantum science and technologies. Recently, we demonstrated that transmitting resonant laser light past an ensemble of two-level emitters can result in a stream of single photons or excess photon pairs. This transformation is due to quantum interference between the transmitted and incoherently scattered two-photon component. Here, using the dispersion of the atomic medium, we actively control the relative quantum phase between these two components. We thereby realize a tunable two-photon interferometer and observe interference fringes…
We study the Rayleigh scattering induced by a diamond nanocrystal in a whispering-gallery-microcavity--waveguide coupling system, and find that it plays a significant role in the photon transportation. On one hand, this study provides a new insight into future solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics toward strong coupling physics. On the other hand, benefitting from this Rayleigh scattering, novel photon transportation such as dipole induced transparency and strong photon antibunching can occur simultaneously. As potential applications, this system can function as high-efficiency photon tur…
We analyze the process of simultaneous photon pair generation and quantum walks realized by spontaneous parametric down conversion of a pump beam in a quadratic nonlinear waveguide array. We demonstrate that this flexible platform allows for creating quantum states with different spatial correlations. In particular, we predict that the output photon correlations can be switched from photon bunching to antibunching controlled entirely classically by varying the temperature of the array or the spatial profile of the pump beam.
The prototype of a quantum random number generator is a single photon which impinges onto a beam splitter and is then detected by single photon detectors at one of the two output paths. Prior to detection, the photon is in a quantum mechanical superposition state of the two possible outcomes with - ideally - equal amplitudes until its position is determined by measurement. When the two output modes are observed by a single photon detector, the generated clicks can be interpreted as ones and zeros - and a raw random bit stream is obtained. Here we implement such a random bit generator based on …
We report on the realization of a stable solid state room temperature source for single photons. It is based on the fluorescence of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in a diamond nanocrystal. Antibunching has been observed in the fluorescence light under both continuous and pulsed excitation. Our source delivers 2*10^4 single-photon pulses per second at an excitation repetition rate of 10 MHz. The number of two-photon pulses is reduced by a factor of five compared to strongly attenuated coherent sources.
We show how the photon statistics emitted by a large variety of light-matter systems under weak coherent driving can be understood, to lowest order in the driving, in the framework of an admixture of (or interference between) a squeezed state and a coherent state, with the resulting state accounting for all bunching and antibunching features. One can further identify two mechanisms that produce resonances for the photon correlations: i) conventional statistics describes cases that involve a particular quantum level or set of levels in the excitation/emission processes with interferences occurr…
We report the observation of room-temperature superradiance from single, highly luminescent diamond nanocrystals with spatial dimensions much smaller than the wavelength of light, and each containing a large number (~10^3) of embedded nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres. After excitation of the nanodiamonds with an off-resonant, green laser pulse, we observe i) ultrafast radiative lifetimes down to ~ 1 ns, and ii) super-Poissonian photon bunching in the autocorrelation function of the light emitted from the fastest nanodiamonds. We explain our findings with a detailed theoretical model based on coll…
Non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies, known as exceptional points (EPs), feature simultaneous coalescence of both eigenvalues and the associated eigenstates of a system. A host of intriguing EP effects and their applications have been revealed in the classical realm, such as loss-induced lasing, single-mode laser, and EP-enhanced sensing. Here we show that a purely quantum effect, known as single-photon blockade, emerges in a Kerr microring resonator due to EP-induced asymmetric coupling between the optical modes and the nonlinearity-induced anharmonic energy-level spacing. A striking feature o…
