Quantum constraints of the type Q ψ= 0 can be straightforwardly implemented in cases where Q is a self-adjoint operator for which zero is an eigenvalue. In that case, the physical Hilbert space is obtained by projecting onto the kernel of Q, i.e. H_phys = ker(Q) = ker(Q*). It is, however, nontrivial to identify and project onto H_phys when zero is not in the point spectrum but instead is in the continuous spectrum of Q, because in this case the kernel of Q is empty.
Here, we observe that the topology of the underlying Hilbert space can be harmlessly modified in the direction perpendicular to the constraint surface in such a way that Q becomes non-self-adjoint. This procedure then allows us to conveniently obtain H_phys as the proper Hilbert subspace H_phys = ker(Q*), on which one can project as usual. In the simplest case, the necessary change of topology amounts to passing from an L^2 Hilbert space to a Sobolev space.
We show that the set of projections in an operator system can be detected using only the abstract data of the operator system. Specifically, we show that if $p$ is a positive contraction in an operator system $V$ which satisfies certain order-theoretic conditions, then there exists a complete order embedding of $V$ into $B(H)$ mapping $p$ to a projection operator. Moreover, every abstract projection in an operator system $V$ is an honest projection in the C*-envelope of $V$. Using this characterization, we provide an abstract characterization for operator systems spanned by two commuting famil…
By means of the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators and Dirac notation, we introduce a new kind of asymmetric integration projection operators in entangled state representations. These asymmetric projection operators are proved to be the Hermitian operator. Then, we rigorously demonstrate that they correspond to a parity measurement combined with a beam splitter when any two-mode quantum state passes through such device. Therefore we obtain a new relation between a Hermitian operator and the entangled state representation. As applications, we recover the previous re…
