We consider the effect of spatial correlations on sources of polarized electromagnetic radiation. The sources, assumed to be monochromatic, are constructed out of dipoles aligned along a line such that their orientation is correlated with their position. In one representative example, the dipole orientations are prescribed by a generalized form of the standard von Mises distribution for angular variables such that the azimuthal angle of dipoles is correlated with their position. In another example the tip of the dipole vector traces a helix around the symmetry axis of the source, thereby modelling the DNA molecule. We study the polarization properties of the radiation emitted from such sources in the radiation zone. For certain ranges of the parameters we find a rather striking angular dependence of polarization. This may find useful applications in certain biological systems as well as in astrophysical sources.
Experimental measurement of the self-healing of the spatially inhomogeneous states of polarization of radially and azimuthally polarized vector Bessel beams
Fully analytic expressions, for the electric and magnetic fields of an ultrashort and tightly focused laser pulse of the radially polarized category, are presented to lowest order of approximation. The fields are derived from scalar and vector potentials, along the lines of our earlier work for a similar pulse of the linearly polarized variety. A systematic program is also described from which the fields may be obtained to any desired accuracy, analytically or numerically.
The Doppler effect of light was implemented by interference with a reference wave to infer linear velocities in early manifestations, and more recently lateral and angular velocities with scalar phase structured light. A consequence of the scalar wave approach is that it is impossible to deduce the motion direction and position of moving targets directly. Here we overcome this limitation with vectorially structured light, exhibiting spatially variant polarization, allowing both the position and velocity of a particle to be robustly determined by a new vectorial Doppler effect. We use this to s…
Propagation features of circularly polarized (CP) electromagnetic waves in magnetized plasmas are determined by the plasma density and the magnetic field strength. This property can be applied to design a unique plasma photonic device for intense short-pulse lasers. We have demonstrated by numerical simulations that a thin plasma foil under an external magnetic field works as a polarizing plate to separate a linearly polarized laser into two CP waves traveling in the opposite direction. This plasma photonic device has an advantage for generating intense CP waves even with a relativistic amplit…
Wave polarization contains valuable information for electromagnetic signal processing and the ability to manipulate it can be extremely useful in photonic devices. In this work, we propose designs comprised of one of the emerging and interesting two-dimensional media: Black Phosphorus. Due to substantial in-plane anisotropy, a single slab of Black Phosphorus can be very efficient for manipulating the polarization state of electromagnetic waves. We investigate Black Phosphorus slabs that filter the fields along one direction, or polarization axis rotation, or convert linear polarization to circ…
It has been found that in the media where the dielectric permittivity $ε$ or the magnetic permeability $μ$ is near zero and in transition metamaterials where $ε$ or $μ$ changes from positive to negative values, there occur a strong absorption or amplification of the electromagnetic wave energy in the presence of an infinitesimally small damping or gain and a strong enhancement of the electromagnetic fields. We attribute these phenomena to the mode conversion of transverse electromagnetic waves into longitudinal plasma oscillations and its inverse process. In this paper, we study analogous phen…
Electromagnetic topological insulators have been explored extensively due to the robust edge states they support. In this work, we propose a topological electromagnetic system based on a line defect in topologically nontrivial photonic crystals (PCs). With a finite-difference supercell approach, modal analysis of the PCs structure is investigated in detail. The topological line-defect states are pseudospin polarized and their energy flow directions are determined by the corresponding pseudospin helicities. These states can be excited by using two spatially-symmetric line-source arrays carrying…
We present the results of a study of the Poynting vector field generic singularities at the resonant light scattering of a plane monochromatic linearly polarized electromagnetic wave by a subwavelength particle. We reveal the impact of the problem symmetry, the spatial dimension, and the energy conservation law on the properties of the singularities. We show that, in the cases when the problem symmetry results in the existence of an invariant plane for the Poynting vector field lines, a formation of a standing wave in the immediate vicinity of a singularity gives rise to a saddle-type singular…
A new metamaterial based, circular polarized electromagnetic energy harvester is presented in this work. The structure, which is multilayer and utilises the well-known to the literature geometry of the spiral split ring resonator, operates at the Wi-Fi frequency band. Based on full electromagnetic analysis, the proposed harvester presents high efficiency (i.e., greater than 90%), adequate angle insensitivity (i.e., 44 deg.) and it is capable of absorbing circular polarised plane waves.
We derive expressions for the energy, linear momentum, and angular momentum content of circularly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian wave-packets propagating in free space. The vectorial nature of the electromagnetic field is taken into account, and the various consequences of paraxial approximation, which is typically invoked in theoretical treatments of the Laguerre-Gaussian beams, are examined.
For light fields, the coherence in longitudinal direction is governed by both the frequency spectra and angular spectra they possess. In this work, we develop and report a theoretical formulation to demonstrate the effect of the angular spectra of electromagnetic light fields in quantifying their longitudinal spatial coherence. The experimental results obtained by measuring the electromagnetic longitudinal spatial coherence and degree of cross-polarization of uniformly polarized light fields for different angular spectra validate the theoretical findings.
The interplay between Anderson localization and total internal reflection of electromagnetic waves incident near the critical angle on randomly-stratified dielectric media is investigated theoretically. Using an exact analytical formula for the localization length for the Schrödinger equation with a Gaussian $δ$-correlated random potential in one dimension, we show that when the incident angle is equal to the critical angle, the localization length for an incident $s$ wave of wavelength $λ$ is directly proportional to $λ^{4/3}$ throughout the entire range of the wavelength, for any value of th…
The influence of the electromagnetic irradiation pressure on a spheroidal metallic nanoparticle at the frequencies close to the surface plasmon vibrations has been considered. With the action of the radiation pressure, the polarizability of metal nanoparticle becomes a tensor quantity. The expressions for the resonance pressure components for the cases of plane-polarized and circularly polarized light have been derived. We have demonstrated that the resonance pressure can substantially depend on the shape of a non-spherical nanoparticle and its orientation with respect to the direction of ligh…
Chiral structures have reported radiation of circular polarized electromagnetic waves (CPs) in a specific direction. Here we report a class of torus knot radiators that is not only chiral but also three-dimensional (3-D) rotational symmetric along X, Y and Z axes. Because of this exotic chirality and symmetry, the knot radiator presented is able to demonstrate omnidirectional circular polarized radiation, which has never been reported in any known structures.
In this work we present a method for generating random matrices describing electromagnetic scattering from disordered media containing dielectric particles with prescribed single particle scattering characteristics. Resulting scattering matrices automatically satisfy the physical constraints of unitarity, reciprocity and time reversal, whilst also incorporating the polarization properties of electromagnetic waves and scattering anisotropy. Our technique therefore enables statistical study of a variety of polarization phenomena, including depolarization rates and polarization-dependent scatteri…
