We investigate the reflection and refraction behaviors of electromagnetic waves at the interface between an isotropic material and the anisotropic medium with a unique dispersion relation. We show that the refraction angle of whether phase or energy flow for $E$-polarized waves is opposite to that for $H$-polarized waves, though the dispersion relations for $E$- and $H$-polarized waves are the same in such anisotropic media. For a certain polarized wave the refraction behaviors of wave vector and energy flow are also significantly different. It is found that waves exhibit different propagation behaviors in anisotropic media with different sign combinations of the permittivity and permeability tensors. Some interesting properties of propagation are also found in the special anisotropic media, such as amphoteric refraction, oblique total transmission for both $E$- and $H$-polarized waves, and the inversion of critical angle. The special anisotropic media can be realized by metamaterials and lead to potential applications, such as to fabricate polarization splitters with higher efficiencies than conventional counterparts.
We demonstrate that non-magnetic ($μ\equiv 1$) left-handed materials can be effectively used for waveguide imaging systems. We also propose a specific THz realization of the non-magnetic left-handed material based on homogeneous, naturally-occurring media.
This is a comment on a paper by Kazansky et al. appeared in Phys. Rev. Lett., 82, 2199 (1999). We demonstrate that the bremsstrahlung of photoelectrons, which oscillate in the light field of an ultrashort laser pulse, accounts for the anomalous anisotropic light scattering, the "propeller effect", described in the paper of Kazansky et al. This mechanism of light emission could explain some results of white-light continuum generation and dielectric breakdown emission.
We investigate the linear propagation of a paraxial optical beam in anisotropic media. We start from the eigenmode solution of the plane wave in the media, then subsequently derive the wave equation for the beam propagating along a general direction except the optic axes. The wave equation has a term containing the second mixed partial derivative which originates from the anisotropy, and this term can result in the rotation of the beam spot. The rotation effect is investigated by solving analytically the wave equation with an initial elliptical Gaussian beam for both uniaxial and biaxial media…
Based on boundary conditions and dispersion relations, the anomalous propagation of waves incident from regular isotropic media into quasiisotropic media is investigated. It is found that the anomalous negative refraction, anomalous total reflection and oblique total transmission can occur in the interface associated with quasiisotropic media. The Brewster angles of E- and H-polarized waves in quasiisotropic media are also discussed. It is shown that the propagation properties of waves in quasiisotropic media are significantly different from those in isotropic and anisotropic media.
We study propagation of a pair of oppositely charged and mutually incoherent vortices in anisotropic nonlinear optical media. Mutual interactions retard the delocalization of the vortex core observed for isolated vortices.
It is found that the amphoteric refraction, i.e. the refraction can be either positive or negative depending on the incident angles, could occur at a planar interface associated with a uniaxially anisotropic positive index media (PIM) or an anisotropic negative index media (NIM). Particularly, the anomalous negative refraction can occur at a planar interface from an isotropic PIM to an anisotropic PIM, whereas the anomalous positive refraction occurs at the interface from an isotropic PIM to an anisotropic NIM. The optimal conditions to yield the two unusual refractions are obtained. The diffe…
This paper is devoted to study the propagation of light beams carrying orbital angular momentum in optically anisotropic media. We first review some properties of homogeneous anisotropic media, and describe how the paraxial formalism is modified in order to proceed with a new approach dealing with a general setting of paraxial propagation along uniaxial inhomogeneous media. This approach is suitable for describing the space-variant-optical-axis phase plates.
Weyl semimetals are promising quantum materials that offer unique topological properties. Lately, it has been shown that laser-driven electron dynamics have characteristic signatures in two-dimensional and three-dimensional Dirac semimetals. The transition from Dirac to Weyl semimetal requires the breaking of either inversion or time-reversal symmetry. The present work shows that the laser-driven electron dynamics in a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry has intriguing features in its high-harmonic spectrum. It is found that the parity and magnitude of the non-zero Berry curvatur…
We show existence of interfaces between two anisotropic materials so that light is refracted in accordance with a given pattern of energy. To do this we formulate a vector Snell law for anisotropic media when the wave fronts are given by norms for which the corresponding unit spheres are strictly convex.
By considering gauge transformations on the macroscopic Maxwell's equations, a two dimensional gauge field, with its pseudo magnetic field in the real space, is identified as tilted anisotropy in the constitutive parameters. We show that optical spin Hall effect and one-way edge states become possible simply by using anisotropic media with broadband response. The proposed gauge field also allows us to design an optical isolator based on the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Our approach will be useful in spoof magneto-optics with arbitrary magnetic fields mimicked by metamaterials with subwavelength unit …
The electromagnetic dispersion in periodic layered media can be tailored and their resonant properties can be considerably improved by utilizing anisotropic materials. Periodic structures with a photonic band edge split into two parts, or so-called split band edge, exhibit superior resonant properties including exceptionally high Q-values of transmission resonances and nearly perfect impedance matching at the boundaries, even when the number of unit cells N is not large. A microwave transmission resonance with Q~220 is demonstrated in a periodic stack of form-birefringent layers with N=12 real…
We investigate the wave propagation in the anisotropic metamaterial with single-sheeted hyperboloid dispersion relation. Based on boundary conditions and dispersion relations, we find that the opposite amphoteric refraction, such that E- (or H-) polarized waves are positively refracted whereas H- (or E-) polarized waves are negatively refracted, can occur at the interface associated with the anisotropic metamaterial. Under a certain condition, both E- and H-polarized waves can exhibit the same single-sheeted hyperboloid or straight dispersion relation, while the two polarized waves exhibit dif…
We present a generalized 4 $\times$ 4 matrix formalism for the description of light propagation in birefringent stratified media. In contrast to previous work, our algorithm is capable of treating arbitrarily anisotropic or isotropic, absorbing or non-absorbing materials and is free of discontinous solutions. We calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients and derive equations for the electric field distribution for any number of layers. The algorithm is easily comprehensible and can be straight forwardly implemented in a computer program. To demonstrate the capabilities of the appro…
We consider the impact of anisotropic nonlocality on the arrest of the collapse and stabilization of dipole-mode (DM) solitons in two-dimensional (2D) models of optical media with the diffusive nonlinearity. The nonlocal nonlinearity is made anisotropic through elliptic diffusivity. The medium becomes semi-local in the limit case of 1D diffusivity. Families of fundamental and DM solitons are found by means of the variational approximation (VA) and in a numerical form. We demonstrate that the collapse of 2D beams is arrested even in the semi-local system. The anisotropic nonlocality readily sta…
We investigate the electromagnetic response of a pair of complementary bi-anisotropic media, which consist of a medium with positive refractive index ($+\ep$, $+μ$, $+ξ$) and a medium with negative refractive index($-\ep$, $-μ$, $-ξ$). We show that this idealized system has peculiar imaging properties in that it reproduces images of a source, in principle, with unlimited resolution. We then consider an infinite array of line sources regularly spaced in a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) consisting of 2n-layers of bi-anisotropic complementary media. Using coordinate transformation, we map …
We show that transparent dielectrics with strong optical anisotropy support a new class of electromagnetic waves that combine the properties of propagating and evanescent fields. These "ghost waves" are created in tangent bifurcations that "annihilate" pairs of positive- and negative-index modes, and represent the optical analogue of the "ghost orbits" in the quantum theory of non-integrable dynamical systems. Similarly to the regular evanescent fields, ghost waves support high transverse wavenumbers, but in addition to the exponential decay show oscillatory behavior in the direction of propag…
The emission properties of atoms lie at the foundations of both quantum theory and light-matter interactions. In the context of macroscopic media, exact knowledge thereof is important both in current quantum technologies as well as in fundamental studies. While for isotropic media, this is a very well-studied problem, there are still big gaps in the theory of anisotropic media. In particular, to the best of our knowledge, an explicit expression for the spontaneous emission rate in general anisotropic media has not been presented. In this work, we first derive the quantised electromagnetic fiel…
We demonstrate bending of light on the same side of the normal in a free standing corrugated metal film under bi-directional illumination. Coherent perfect absorption (CPA) is exploited to suppress the specular zeroth order leading to effective back-bending of light into the `-1' order, while the `+1' order is resonant with the surface mode. The effect is shown to be phase sensitive yielding CPA and superscattering in the same geometry.
As one of the most fundamental optical phenomena, refraction between isotropic media is characterized by light bending towards the normal to the boundary when passing from a low- to a high-refractive-index medium. However, in anisotropic media, refraction is a much more exotic phenomenon. The most general case of refraction between two anisotropic media remains unexplored, particularly in natural media and at the nanoscale. Here, we visualize and comprehensively study refraction of electromagnetic waves between two strongly anisotropic (hyperbolic) media, and, importantly, we do it with the us…
We demonstrate experimentally an optical process in which the spin angular momentum carried by a circularly polarized light beam is converted into orbital angular momentum, leading to the generation of helical modes with a wavefront helicity controlled by the input polarization. This phenomenon requires the interaction of light with matter that is both optically inhomogeneous and anisotropic. The underlying physics is also associated with the so-called Pancharatnam-Berry geometrical phases involved in any inhomogeneous transformation of the optical polarization.
2-D diffraction patterns arising in the far-field region were investigated theoretically for the case, when the plane wave with non collinear group and phase velocities is incident on the wide slit in opaque screen with arbitrary orientation. This investigation was carried out by consideration as an example of magnetostatic surface wave diffraction in tangentially magnetized ferrite slab. It was deduced the universal analytical formula, which one can use to calculate the angular width of diffractive beam in any 2-D anisotropic geometries for the waves of various nature. It was shown, that in 2…
We analyse van der Waals interactions between a pair of dielectrically anisotropic plane-layered media interacting across a dielectrically isotropic solvent medium. We develop a general formalism based on transfer matrices to investigate the van der Waals torque and force in the limit of weak birefringence and dielectric matching between the ordinary axes of the anisotropic layers and the solvent. We apply this formalism to study the following systems: (i) a pair of single anisotropic layers, (ii) a single anisotropic layer interacting with a multilayered slab consisting of alternating anisotr…
