We demonstrate that non-magnetic ($μ\equiv 1$) left-handed materials can be effectively used for waveguide imaging systems. We also propose a specific THz realization of the non-magnetic left-handed material based on homogeneous, naturally-occurring media.
In this Letter, it is claimed that, in addition to the Chiao-Wu geometric phase and optical Aharonov-Carmi geometric phase, there exists a new interesting geometric phase caused by the helicity inversion of photons in the optical fiber composed periodically of left- and right- handed (LRH) media. By making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation, we calculate this geometric phase. It is emphasized that this geometric phase should not been neglected when considering the anomalous refraction on the interfaces between left- and rig…
Some physically interesting properties and effects of wave propagation in biaxially anisotropic left-handed materials are investigated in this paper. We show that in the biaxially gyrotropic left-handed material, the left-right coupling of circularly polarized light arises due to the negative indices in permittivity and permeability tensors of gyrotropic media. It is well known that the geometric phases of photons inside a curved fiber in previous experiments often depend on the cone angles of solid angles subtended by a curve traced by the direction of wave vector of light, at the center of p…
A theory of self-induced transparency of surface TM-mode propagating along a interface separating conventional and left-handed metamaterials is developed. A transition layer sandwiched between connected media is described using a model of a two-dimensional gas of quantum dots. Explicit analytical expressions for a surface optical soliton in the presence of single and biexciton transitions, depending on the magnetic permeability of the left-handed medium, are obtained with realistic parameters which can be reached in current experiments. It is shown that the sign of the total energy flow the su…
A bulk left-handed metamaterial with fishnet structure is investigated to show the optical loss compensation via surface plasmon amplification, with the assistance of a Gaussian gain in PbS quantum dots. The optical resonance enhancement around 200 THz is confirmed by the retrieval method. By exploring the dependence of propagation loss on the gain coefficient and metamaterial thickness, we verify numerically that the left-handed response can endure a large propagation thickness with ultralow and stable loss under a certain gain coefficient.
We report analytical calculations for the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through an inhomogeneous layer whose refractive index varies in one dimension situated between bulk right- and left-handed media. Significant field localization is generated in the layer that is caused by the coherent superposition of evanescent waves. The strength of the field localization and the transmission properties of the layer are investigated as a function of the layer width, losses and defects in the refractive index; the former two being modelled by continuous changes, and the latter by discontinuous …
It is shown that artificial magnetism with relatively large frequency bandwidth can be obtained from periodic arrangements of dielectric rings. Combined with dielectric rods, dielectric rings can provide 3D isotropic left-handed metamaterials being an advantageous alternative to metallic split ring resonators and/or metallic wires when un-detectability by low frequency external magnetic fields is desired. Furthermore it is shown that dielectric rings can be also combined with natural plasma-like media to obtain a left-handed metamaterial.
The linear and nonlinear surface waves propagating along the interface separating isotropic conventional and uniaxially anisotropic left-handed materials is investigated. The conditions of the existence of surface TM-modes is determined. It is shown that surface waves can be formed when the components of the permittivity and permeability tensors of the uniaxially anisotropic left-handed materials are simultaneously negative. A transition layer sandwiched between connected media is described using a model of a two-dimensional gas of quantum dots. Explicit analytical expressions for a surface op…
We review the intensively discussed ideas about wave propagation and refraction in media where both electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are negative. The criticism against negative refraction as violating the causality principle is considered. Starting from the initial wave equations, refraction of beams at the boundary of a left-handed medium is analyzed. The physics of a perfect lens formed by a flat layer of a left-handed material is considered.
The Doppler effects for the reflected wave from a moving media are systemically analyzed in this paper. The theoretical formula for the Doppler shift in the left-handed material, which is described by Drude's dispersion model, is presented. This formula is examined by first-principles numerical experiments, which are in agreement with the theoretical results.
Ultrafast all-optical control of spins with femtosecond laser pulses is one of the hot topics at the crossroads of photonics and magnetism with a direct impact on future magnetic recording. Unveiling light-assisted recording mechanisms for an increase of the bit density beyond the diffraction limit without excessive heating of the recording medium is an open challenge. Here we show that surface plasmon-polaritons in hybrid metal-dielectric structures can provide spatial confinement of the inverse Faraday effect, mediating the excitation of localized coherent spin precession with 0.41 THz frequ…
Dry and wet drawing materials were investigated by THz time-domain spectroscopy in transmission mode. Carbon-based and iron-gall inks have been studied, some prepared following ancient recipes and others using current synthetic materials; a commercial ink was studied as well. We measured the THz signals on thin film of liquid inks deposited on polyethylene pellicles, comparing the results with the thick pellets of dried inks blended with polyethylene powder. This study required the implementation of a new experimental method and data analysis procedure able to provide a reliable extraction of …
We theoretically investigate the existence and properties of hybrid surface waves forming at interfaces between left-handed materials and dielectric birefringent media. The existence conditions of such waves are found to be highly relaxed in comparison to the original hybrid surface waves, discovered by Dyakonov, in configurations involving birefringent materials and right-handed media. Hybrid surface waves in left-handed materials feature remarkable properties: (i) a high degree of localization and (ii) coexistence of several guided solutions. The existence of several hybrid surface waves for…

The sign of the refractive index of any medium is soley determined by the requirement that the propagation of an electromagnetic wave obeys Einstein causality. Our analysis shows that this requirement predicts that the real part of the refractive index may be negative in an isotropic medium even if the electric permittivity and the magnetic permeability are both positive. Such a system may be a route to negative index media at optical frequencies. We also demonstrate that the refractive index may be positive in left-handed media that contain two molecular species where one is in its excited st…
We study both linear and nonlinear surface waves localized at the interface separating a left-handed medium (i.e. the medium with both negative dielectric permittivity and negative magnetic permeability) and a conventional (or right-handed) dielectric medium. We demonstrate that the interface can support both TE- and TM-polarized surface waves - surface polaritons, and we study their properties. We describe the intensity-dependent properties of nonlinear surface waves in three different cases, i.e. when both the LH and RH media are nonlinear and when either of the media is nonlinear. In the ca…
We show that the periodic array of left-handed cylinders possesses a rich spectrum of guided modes when the negative permeability of cylinders equals exactly to minus value of permeability of embedding media. These resonances strongly influences propagation of electromagnetic waves through photonic structures made from left-handed materials. A series of Fano resonances excited by incident wave destroys the band frequency spectrum of square array of left-handed cylinders and increases considerably the absorption of transmitted waves.
Optical activity (polarization rotation of light) is one of the most desired features of chiral media, as it is important for many polarization related applications. However, in the THz region, chiral media with strong optical activity are not available in nature. Here, we study theoretically, and experimentally a chiral metamaterial structure composed of pairs of vertical U-shape resonators of "twisted" arms, and we reveal that it demonstrates large pure optical activity (i.e. optical activity associated with negligible transmitted wave ellipticity) in the low THz regime. The experimental dat…
We study resonant tunneling through a layered medium with a negative index medium (NIM) slab as a constituent layer. We demonstrate large delays in transmission mediated by the surface and the guided modes of the structure with low losses. We show how important it is to include NIM dispersion for correct assessment of the nature and magnitude of the delay. We also point out the role of NIM absorption for the feasibility of such compact delay devices.
Temporally varying electromagnetic media have been extensively investigated recently to unveil new means for controlling light. However, spin-dependent phenomena in such media have not been explored thoroughly. Here, we reveal the existence of spin-dependent phenomena at a temporal interface between chiral and dielectric media. In particular, we show theoretically and numerically that due to the material discontinuity in time, linearly polarized light is split into forward-propagating right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized waves having different angular frequencies and it the same p…
The evidence that double negative media, with an effective negative permittivity, and an effective negative permeability, can be manufactured to operate at frequencies ranging from microwave to optical is ushering in a new era of metamaterials. They are referred to here as 'left-handed', even though a variety of names is evident from the literature. In anticipation of a demand for highly structured integrated practical waveguides, this paper addresses the impact of this type of medium upon waveguides that can be also nonlinear. After an interesting historical overview and an exposure of some s…
Polaritons in metals, semimetals, semiconductors, and polar insulators, with their extreme confinement of electromagnetic energy, provide many promising opportunities for enhancing typically weak light-matter interactions such as multipolar radiation, multiphoton spontaneous emission, Raman scattering, and material nonlinearities. These highly confined polaritons are quasi-electrostatic in nature, with most of their energy residing in the electric field. As a result, these "electric" polaritons are far from optimized for enhancing emission of a magnetic nature, such as spin relaxation, which i…
It has been shown that for left-handed metamaterials and generally for negative refraction media the refraction index cannot be entered unequivocally and cannot be considered as real, and especially as negative. This index for above referred media is not expedient
We study a ring cavity filled with a slab of a right-handed material and a slab of a left-handed material. Both layers are assumed to be nonlinear Kerr media. First, we derive a model for the propagation of light in a left-handed material. By constructing a mean-field model, we show that the sign of diffraction can be made either positive or negative in this resonator, depending on the thicknesses of the layers. Subsequently, we demonstrate that the dynamical behavior of the modulation instability is strongly affected by the sign of the diffraction coefficient. Finally, we study the dissipativ…
We review some recent (mostly ours) results on the Anderson localization of light and electron waves in complex disordered systems, including: (i) left-handed metamaterials, (ii) magneto-active optical structures, (iii) graphene superlattices, and (iv) nonlinear dielectric media. First, we demonstrate that left-handed metamaterials can significantly suppress localization of light and lead to an anomalously enhanced transmission. This suppression is essential at the long-wavelength limit in the case of normal incidence, at specific angles of oblique incidence (Brewster anomaly), and in the vici…
Observing and taming unusual effects arising from non-trivial light-matter interaction has always triggered scientists to better understand Nature and develop technological tools towards implementing novel applications. Recently, several unusual optomechanical effects have been unveiled when subtle spin-orbit interactions come at play to build up optical forces and torques that are hardly seen in everyday life, such as negative optical radiation pressure, transverse optical forces, or left-handed optical torques. To date, there are only a few experimental proposals to reveal these effects desp…
We report a nanofabricated medium made of electromagnetically coupled pairs of gold dots with geometry carefully designed at a 10-nm level. The medium exhibits strong magnetic response at visible-light frequencies, including bands with negative μ. The magnetism arises due to the excitation of quadrupole plasmon resonances. Our approach shows for the first time the feasibility of magnetism at optical frequencies and paves a way towards magnetic and left-handed components for visible optics.
Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) are engineered materials with a hyperbolic isofrequency surface, enabling a range of novel phenomena and applications including negative refraction, enhanced sensing, and subdiffraction imaging, focusing, and waveguiding. Existing HMMs primarily work in the visible and infrared spectral range due to the inherent properties of their constituent materials. Here we demonstrate a THz-range Dirac HMM using topological insulators (TIs) as the building blocks. We find that the structure houses up to three high-wavevector volume plasmon polariton (VPP) modes, consistent…
Bi-isotropic media constitute a proper scenario for scrutinizing optical effects stemming from magnetoelectric parameters. Chiral magnetic current is a macroscopic effect arising from the chiral magnetic effect that enriches the phenomenology of a classical dielectric medium. This work examines optical aspects of bi-isotropic media in the presence of magnetic conductivity. The full isotropic scenario manifests circular birefringence described by a dispersive rotatory power that changes sign at a given frequency. For a bi-isotropic medium with antisymmetric magnetic conductivity, an intricate d…
In this work, a plasmonic right-angled waveguide bend and divider are proposed. Using the Transformation Optics (TO) approach the transformation media of a bend and a T-shaped divider are obtained. Such media with continuous refractive index are realized with the help of graphene in the terahertz frequency range, key to effectively guiding the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation on the 90 degree curves. Components with such capability are promising for THz device applications.
