CS$_2$ is identified as a molecule for which distinction can be made between dynamic and geometric alignment induced by intense laser fields. Measured anisotropic angular distributions of fragment ions arise from (i) dynamic alignment of the S-C-S axes along the laser polarization vector for 35-ps laser pulses and (ii) geometric alignment due to an angle-dependent ionization rate in the case of 100-fs pulses. Results of classical calculations of the alignment dynamics support our observations. By comparing mass spectra obtained with linearly- and circularly-polarized light it is not possible to distinguish between dynamic and geometric alignment.

Time-resolved investigations of ultrafast electronic and molecular dynamics were not possible until recently. The typical time scale of these processes is in the picosecond to attosecond realm. The tremendous technological progress in recent years made it possible to generate ultrashort pulses, which can be used to trigger, to watch, and to control atomic and molecular motion. This tutorial focuses on experimental and theoretical advances which are used to study the dynamics of electrons and molecules in the presence of ultrashort pulses. In the first part, the rotational dynamics of molecules…
We report the first femtosecond resolved evolution of the giant magnetic field in a solid plasma, produced by a 100 fs, 10^16 W cm^-2, 806 nm laser field, using a pump-probe Faraday rotation technique.
We study the breakup of $\text{H}_2^+$ exposed to super-intense, femtosecond laser pulses with frequencies greater than that corresponding to the ionization potential. By solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in an extensive field parameter range, it is revealed that highly nonresonant dissociation channels can dominate over ionization. By considering field-dressed Born-Oppenheimer potential energy curves in the reference frame following a free electron in the field, we propose a simple physical model that characterizes this dissociation mechanism. The model is used to predict contro…
We report on the generation of intense extreme ultraviolet (EUV) supercontinuum with photon energies spanning from 35 eV to 50 eV (i. e., supporting an isolated attosecond pulse with a duration of ~271 as) by loosely focusing 35 fs, 11 mJ pulses from a femtosecond laser amplifier into a 10-mm long gas cell filled with krypton gas. The dramatic change of spectral and temporal properties of the driver pulses after passing through the gas cell indicates that propagation effects play a significant role in promoting the generation of the EUV supercontinuum.
Triple-differential cross sections for two-photon double ionization of molecular hydrogen are presented for a central photon energy of 30 eV. The calculations are based on a fully {\it ab initio}, nonperturbative, approach to the time-dependent Schroedinger equation in prolate spheroidal coordinates, discretized by a finite-element discrete-variable-representation. The wave function is propagated in time for a few femtoseconds using the short, iterative Lanczos method to study the correlated response of the two photoelectrons to short, intense laser radiation. The current results often lie in …
We present calculation of photoexcitation and high-harmonic generation in bulk diamond induced by intense near-infrared laser pulse of photon energy 1.55 eV, time duration of 15 fs and peak field strength $F=$ 0.4 V/Å. Depending on the laser polarization direction, the pulsed irradiation creates electron-hole pairs and transient density fluctuations in a localized region of the crystal momentum space. As a consequence energetic inter- and intra-band harmonics are generated with alternating phase during each half-cycle of the driving pulse. The corresponding inter- and intra-band currents are i…
We report on generation of a rotational wavepacket in the ground vibronic state (v = 0) of excited electronic B2Σu+ state of N2+ in a femtosecond laser induced plasma spark. Decoding of the rotational wavepacket is achieved with the frequency-resolved seed-amplified air laser spectrum resulting from the population inversion between the B2Σu+-X2Σg+ states of N2+ in the plasma. We also observe that the rotational wave-packet leads to modulation of the amplified seed signals in the time domain using a pump-probe scheme, which can be well reproduced by theoretical calculation. Our results demonstr…
We present theoretical results on the high-harmonic generation (HHG) in bulk diamond induced by intense laser pulse of wavelength 800 nm and duration 15 fs. For laser intensity in the range $1 \le I \le 50 $ TW/cm$^2$ above bandgap harmonics are generated after the pulse peak. We find that the intensity of individual harmonics increases non-linearly with the peak laser intensity, following a non-perturbative trend. For moderate intensity the HHG spectrum exhibits a primary plateau with noisy odd order harmonic structure and a cutoff. For increased laser intensity a secondary plateau emerges wi…
Coherent nonlinear spectroscopies and imaging in the X-ray domain provide direct insight into the coupled motions of electrons and nuclei with resolution on the electronic length and time scale. The experimental realization of such techniques will strongly benefit from access to intense, coherent pairs of femtosecond X-ray pulses. We have observed phase-stable X-ray pulse pairs containing more thank 3 x 10e7 photons at 5.9 keV (2.1 Angstrom) with about 1 fs duration and 2-5 fs separation. The highly directional pulse pairs are manifested by interference fringes in the superfluorescent and seed…
The dissociative ionization of H2+ interacting with intense, femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet laser pulses is investigated theoretically. This is done by numerical propagation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a colinear one-dimensional model of H2+, with electronic and nuclear motion treated exactly within the limitations of the model. The joint-energy spectra (JES) are extracted for the fragmented electron and nuclei by means of the t-SURFF method. The dynamic interference effect, which was first observed in one-electron atomic systems, is in the present work observed for H2+, em…
We combine different wavelengths from an intense high-order harmonics source with variable delay at the focus of a split-mirror interferometer to conduct pump-probe experiments on gas-phase molecules. We report measurements of the time resolution (<44 fs) and spatial profiles (4 μm x 12 μm) at the focus of the apparatus. We demonstrate the utility of this two-color, high-order-harmonic technique by time resolving molecular hydrogen elimination from C2H4 excited into its absorption band at 161 nm.
We present the generation of high order harmonics in crystalline silicon subjected to intense near-infrared 30fs laser pulse. The harmonic spectrum extends from the near infrared to the extreme ultraviolet spectral region. Depending on the pulsed laser intensity, we distinguish two regimes of harmonic generation: (i) perturbative regime: electron-hole pairs born during each half-cycle of the laser pulse via multiphoton and tunnel transitions are accelerated in the laser electric field and gain kinetic energy; the electron-hole pairs then recombine in the ground state by emitting a single high-…
Benzene, with its sea of delocalized $π$-electrons in the valence orbitals, is identified as an example of a class of molecules that enable establishment of the correspondence between intense ion-induced and laser-light-induced fields in experiments that probe ionization dynamics in temporal regimes spanning the attosecond and picosecond ranges.
The ongoing development of intense high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources has recently enabled highly nonlinear ionization of atoms by the absorption of at least 10 extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) photons within a single atom [Senfftleben \textit{et al.}, arXiv1911.01375]. Here we investigate the role that reshaping of the fundamental, few-cycle, near-infrared (NIR) driving laser within the 30-cm-long HHG Xe medium plays in the generation of the intense HHG pulses. Using an incident NIR intensity that is higher than what is required for phase-matched HHG, signatures of reshaping are found by measuri…
Spontaneous emission from individual atoms in vapor lasts nanoseconds, if not microseconds, and beatings in this emission involve only directly excited energy sublevels. In contrast, the superfluorescent emissions burst on a much-reduced timescale and their beatings involve both directly and indirectly excited energy sublevels. In this work, picosecond and femtosecond superfluorescent beatings are observed from a dense cesium atomic vapor. Cesium atoms are excited by 60-femtosecond long, 800 nm laser pulses via two-photon processes into their coherent superpositions of the ground 6S and excite…
The time evolution of the electron density and the resulting time dependence of X-ray diffraction peak intensity in a crystal irradiated by highly intense femtosecond pulses of an XFEL is investigated theoretically on the basis of rate equations for bound electrons and the Boltzmann equation for the kinetics of the unbound electron gas that plays an essential role in the time evolution of the electron density of a crystal. The photoionization, Auger process, electron-impact ionization, electron--electron scattering, and three-body recombination have been implemented in the system of rate equat…
We simulate the dynamics of H2+ and HD+ by direct solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for the electronic and nuclear motion for the interaction of intense femtosecond pulses. On these timescales the rotational motion, even for such light molecules, is frozen. Therefore it is a reasonable assumption that the nuclear alignment is fixed during the pulse interaction and that rotation can be neglected. In terms of vibrational relaxation, and since the nuclei are light, vibration will be important over femtosecond timescales. Although homonuclear diatomics are IR-inactive, in an int…
Energetic H$_2^+$ ions are formed as a result of intra-molecular rearrangement during fragmentation of linear alcohols (methanol, ethanol, propanol, hexanol, and dodecanol) induced by intense optical fields produced by 100 fs long, infrared, laser pulses of peak intensity 8$\times10^{15}$ W cm$^{-2}$. Polarization dependent measurements show, counterintuitively, that rearrangement is induced by the strong optical field within a single laser pulse, and that it occurs before Coulomb explosion of the field-ionized multiply charged alcohols.
We explore time-resolved Coulomb explosion induced by intense, extreme ultraviolet (XUV) femtosecond pulses from the FLASH free-electron laser as a method to image photo-induced molecular dynamics in two molecules, iodomethane and 2,6-difluoroiodobenzene. At an excitation wavelength of 267\,nm, the dominant reaction pathway in both molecules is neutral dissociation via cleavage of the carbon--iodine bond. This allows investigating the influence of the molecular environment on the absorption of an intense, femtosecond XUV pulse and the subsequent Coulomb explosion process. We find that the XUV …
Singly ionized nitrogen molecules in ambient air pumped by near-infrared femtosecond laser give rise to superradiant emission. Here we demonstrate coherent control of this superradiance by injecting a pair of resonant seeding pulses inside the nitrogen gas plasma. Strong modulation of the 391.4 nm superradiance with a period of 1.3 fs is observed when the delay between the two seeding pulses are finely tuned, pinpointing the essential role of macroscopic coherence in this lasing process. Based on this time-resolved method, the complex temporal evolution of the macroscopic coherence between two…
We experimentally investigate the generation of above-threshold harmonics completely from argon atoms on an excited state using mid-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. The highly nonlinear dependences of the observed signal on the pulse energy and polarization of the driver laser pulses indicate its non-perturbative characteristic.
We image spatial distributions of Xe$^{q+}$ ions in the focus of a laser beam of ultrashort, intense pulses in all three dimensions, with a resolution of $\sim$3 $μ$m and $\sim$12 $μ$m in the two transverse directions. This allows for studying ionization processes without spatially averaging ion yields. Our \emph{in situ} ion imaging is also useful to analyze focal intensity profiles and to investigate the transverse modal purity of tightly focused beams of complex light. As an example, the intensity profile of a Hermite-Gaussian beam mode HG$_{1,0}$ recorded with ions is found to be in good a…
Delayed cavity-free forward lasing at the wavelengths of 391 and 428 nm was observed in recent experiments in air or pure nitrogen pumped with an intense femtosecond laser pulse at wavelength of 800~nm. The mechanism responsible for the lasing is highly controversial. In this article we explain the delayed emission by the presence of long-lived polarizations coupling simultaneously ground state X$^2Σ_g^+$ to states A$^2Π_u$ and B$^2Σ_u^+$ of singly ionized nitrogen molecules N$_2^+$. Ionization of neutral nitrogen molecules in a strong laser field and subsequent ion excitation are described by…
