Compton backscattering polarimetry provides a fast measurement of the polarization of an electron beam in a storage ring. Since the method is non-destructive, the polarization of the electrons can be monitored during internal target experiments. At NIKHEF a Compton polarimeter has been constructed to measure the polarization of the longitudinally polarized electrons stored in the AmPS ring. First results obtained with the polarimeter, the first Compton polarimeter to measure the polarization of a stored longitudinally polarized electron beam, are presented in this paper.
Compton backscattering polarimetry provides a fast and accurate method to measure the polarization of an electron beam in a storage ring. We have performed a novel comparison between electron-beam polarimeters based on Møller and Compton scattering. A sequence of electron-beam polarization measurements were performed at low beam currents ($<$ 5 $μ$A) during the $Q_{\rm weak}$ experiment in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. These low current measurements were bracketed by the regular high current (180 $μ$A) operation of the Compton polarimeter. All measurements were found to be consistent within experimental uncertainties of 1% or less, demonstrating that electron polarization does not depend significantly on the beam current. This result…
An experimental setup for studying the Compton scattering of annihilation photons in various (entangled and decoherent) quantum states is presented. Two entangled $γ$-quanta with an energy of 511 keV and mutually orthogonal polarizations are produced by positron-electron annihilation in a thin aluminum plate and are emitted in opposite directions. To measure both photons, the setup provides two equivalent arms of Compton polarimeters. A Compton polarimeter consists of a plastic scintillation scatterer and an array of NaI(Tl) detectors for measuring photons deflected at an angle of 90$^\circ$. …
The photon arm of the Compton polarimeter in Hall A of Jefferson Lab has been upgraded to allow for electron beam polarization measurements with better than 1% accuracy. The data acquisition system (DAQ) now includes an integrating mode, which eliminates several systematic uncertainties inherent in the original counting-DAQ setup. The photon calorimeter has been replaced with a Ce-doped GSO crystal, which has a bright output and fast response, and works well for measurements using the new integrating method at electron beam energies from 1 to 6 GeV.
POLAR is space-borne detector designed for a precise measurement of gamma-ray polarization of the prompt emissions of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the energy range 50 keV - 500 keV. POLAR is a compact Compton polarimeter consisting of 40$\times$ 40 plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs. In May 2015, we performed a series of tests of the POLAR flight model with 100\% polarized x-rays beams at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility beam-line ID11 aming to study thresholds, crosstalk between channels and responses of POLAR flight model to polarized X-ray beams. In this paper we pr…
In spite of extensive observations and numerous theoretical studies in the past decades several key questions related with Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) emission mechanisms are still to be answered. Precise detection of the GRB polarization carried out by dedicated instruments can provide new data and be an ultimate tool to unveil their real nature. A novel space-borne Compton polarimeter POLAR onboard the Chinese space station TG2 is designed to measure linear polarization of gamma-rays arriving from GRB prompt emissions. POLAR uses plastics scintillator bars (PS) as gamma-ray detectors and multi-an…

KEDR detector has the tagging system (TS) to study the gamma-gamma processes. To determine the two-photon invariant mass, the energies of the scattered at small angles electrons and positrons are measured by the magnetic spectrometer embedded into the lattice of the VEPP--4M collider. The energy resolution (scattered electron/positron energy resolution divided by the beam energy) of this spectrometer varies from 0.6% to 0.03% depending on the electron/positron energy. The Compton backscattering of laser radiation on the electron/positron beam is used for the accurate energy scale and resolutio…
In this work we present an active Compton scattering polarimeter as a focal plane instrument able to extend the X-ray polarimetry towards hard X-rays. Other authors have already studied various instrument design by means of Monte Carlo simulations, in this work we will show for the first time the experimental measurements of "tagging efficiency" aimed to evaluate the polarimeter sensitivity as a function of energy. We performed a characterization of different scattering materials by measuring the tagging efficiency that was used as an input to the Monte Carlo simulation. Then we calculated the…
In recent years, a number of purpose-built scintillator-based polarimeters have studied bright astronomical sources for the first time in the hard X-ray band (tens to hundreds of keV). The addition of polarimetry can help data interpretation by resolving model-dependent degeneracies. The typical instrument approach is that incident X-rays scatter off a plastic scintillator into an adjacent scintillator cell. In all missions to date, the scintillators are read out using traditional vacuum tube photo-multipliers (PMTs). The advent of solid-state PMTs ("silicon PM" or "MPPC") is attractive for sp…
Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source, a $γ$-ray beam line of 10MeV order was proposed recently. The beam line is expected to generate $γ$-ray with maximum energy of 22MeV by backward Compton scattering between CO$_2$ laser and electron in the 3.5GeV storage ring of future Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The flux of non-collimated $γ$-ray can be 10$^9$ $\sim$ 10$^{10}$s$^{-1}$ if a commercial CO$_2$ laser of 100W order output power is employed and injected with optimized settings.
Precision polarimetry is essential for future e+ e- colliders and requires Compton polarimeters designed for negligible statistical uncertainties. In this paper, we discuss the design and construction of a quartz Cherenkov detector for such Compton polarimeters. The detector concept has been developed with regard to the main systematic uncertainties of the polarisation measurements, namely the linearity of the detector response and detector alignment. Simulation studies presented here imply that the light yield reachable by using quartz as Cherenkov medium allows to resolve in the Cherenkov ph…
In order to fully exploit the physics potential of the ILC, it will be necessary to measure (and control) beam parameters to a permille level precision. In case of the beam polarisation, this can only be achieved with dedicated high energy Compton polarimeters and by improving the detector linearity, as well as the calibration of the analyzing power. This note summarises results of an early testbeam period with the Cherenkov detector of the SLD polarimeter, linearity measurements of readout electronics and photodetectors and compares simulation results of the SLD Cherenkov detector with those …
High energy longitudinal electron polarimetry will be based on Compton scattering for the International Linear Collider. An unobtrusive measurement has to include a magnet chicane setup serving as a spectrometer. Current proposals make use of Cerenkov detectors for electron detection. A fast simulation has been developed to study the basic properties of scenarios for the polarimeter setup.
A novel, non-invasive method of measuring the beam energy at the International Linear Collider is proposed. Laser light collides head-on with beam particles and either the energy of the Compton scattered electrons near the kinematic end-point is measured or the positions of the Compton backscattered $γ$-rays, the edge electrons and the unscattered beam particles are recorded. A compact layout for the Compton spectrometer is suggested. It consists of a bending magnet and position sensitive detectors operating in a large radiation environment. Several options for high spatial resolution detector…
Polarimetry with permille-level precision is essential for future electron-positron linear colliders. Compton polarimeters can reach negligible statistical uncertainties within seconds of measurement time. The dominating systematic uncertainties originate from the response and alignment of the detector which records the Compton scattered electrons. The robust baseline technology for the Compton polarimeters foreseen at future linear colliders is based on an array of gas Cherenkov detectors read out by photomultipliers. In this paper, we will present a calibration method which promises to monit…
The precision physics program of the ILC requires precise knowledge of the state of beam polarisation. In fact the Compton polarimeters intended for the ILC will have to measure the polarisation with error a factor of 2 smaller than the previous best measurement at the SLAC SLD experiment. In order to further reduce measurement error, spin tracking simulations in the ILC Beam Delivery System subject to ground motion induced misalignment have been performed and the expected variation in polarisation has been quantified. A prototype of a high precision spectrometer to record Compton scattered el…

The beam energy measurement system for the VEPP-2000 electron-positron collider is described. The method of Compton backscattering of $CO$ laser photons on the electron beam is used. The relative systematic uncertainty of the beam energy determination is estimated as 6\cdot10^{-5}. It was obtained through comparison of the results of the beam energy measurements using the Compton backscattering and resonance depolarization methods.
The PREX-2 and CREX experiments in Hall A at Jefferson Lab are precision measurements of parity violating elastic electron scattering from complex nuclei. One requirement was that the incident electron beam polarization, typically $\approx$90\%, be known with 1\% precision. We commissioned and operated a Møller polarimeter on the beam line that exceeds this requirement, achieving a precision of 0.89\% for PREX-2, and 0.85\% for CREX. The uncertainty is purely systematic, accumulated from several different sources, but dominated by our knowledge of the target polarization. Our analysis also dem…

Spatial distribution of intensity, degree and direction of linear polarization of tagged photon beam, which is obtained due to Compton backscattering of laser light on high-energy electron beam, are calculated. Effects of angular dispersion and spatial spread of electron beam are taken into account. Calculations have been carried out for the example of LEGS facility.
The design, construction and operation of a Compton back-scattering laser polarimeter at the HERA storage ring at DESY are described. The device measures the longitudinal polarization of the electron beam between the spin rotators at the HERMES experiment with a fractional systematic uncertainty of 1.6%. A measurement of the beam polarization to an absolute statistical precision of 0.01 requires typically one minute when the device is operated in the multi-photon mode. The polarimeter also measures the polarization of each individual electron bunch to an absolute statistical precision of 0.06 …
A major advance in accurate electron beam polarization measurement has been achieved at Jlab Hall A with a Compton polarimeter based on a Fabry-Perot cavity photon beam amplifier. At an electron energy of 4.6 GeV and a beam current of 40 uA, a total relative uncertainty of 1.5% is typically achieved within 40 min of data taking. Under the same conditions monitoring of the polarization is accurate at a level of 1%. These unprecedented results make Compton polarimetry an essential tool for modern parity-violation experiments, which require very accurate electron beam polarization measurements.
The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) was built with a thermionic electron source and the three original experimental hall lines reflected this. A few years after beam delivery began a parity violation experiment was approved and two polarimeters were installed in the Hall A beam line without consultation with the accelerator physics group. The beam raster system was placed after the new Compton polarimeter, before one accelerator quadrupole and four quadrupoles in the new Moller polarimeter. It was very difficult to meet experimental requirements on envelope functions and …
Polarization characteristics of the gamma beam obtained by the Compton back scattering of laser photons on high energy electrons are evaluated by Monte-Carlo simulations. It is assumed that outgoing photons are tagged; the energy dispersion of the tagging photons and emittance of the initial electrons are taken into account. Dependence of the final photon polarization parameters on measured photon energy is obtained. It is shown that polarization of final photons is decreasing with change for the worth of the tagging energy resolution. Calculations have been applied for the storage ring SIBERI…
A wide range of nucleon and nuclear structure experiments in Jefferson Lab's Hall A require precise, continuous measurements of the polarization of the electron beam. In our Compton polarimeter, electrons are scattered off photons in a Fabry-Perot cavity; by measuring an asymmetry in the integrated signal of the scattered photons detected in a GSO crystal, we can make non-invasive, continuous measurements of the beam polarization. Our goal is to achieve 1% statistical error within two hours of running. We discuss the design and commissioning of an upgrade to this apparatus, and report prelimin…
We demonstrated for the first time the production of highly polarized short-pulse positrons with a finite energy spread in accordance with a new scheme that consists of two-quantum processes, such as inverse Compton scatterings and electron-positron pair creations. Using a circularly polarized laser beam of 532 nm scattered off a high-quality electron beam with the energy of 1.28 GeV, we obtained polarized positrons with an intensity of 10^4 e+/bunch. Magnitude of positron polarizations was determined as 73+-15(sta) +-19(sys)% by means of a newly designed positron polarimeter.
A method for circular e$^-$/e$^+$ accelerator beam energy measurement is proposed. Coordinate of an electron (or a positron) in a focusing magnetic spectrometer built in a circular accelerator depends on its energy, two spectrometer parameters, and the circulating beam energy. The spectrometer parameters can be defined using minimum electron energies from Compton backscattering with two laser wavelengths, and an additional photon coordinate detector. The photon detector is calibrated at once at well-known beam energy. The VEPP-4M collider has appropriate equipment for the method implementation…

POLAR is a space-borne Compton scattering detector for precise measurements of the GRB polarization. It consists of a 40$\times$40 array of plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs (MaPMTs). It is scheduled to be launched into space in 2016 onboard of the Chinese space l…
We report on the highest precision yet achieved in the measurement of the polarization of a low energy, $\mathcal{O}$(1 GeV), electron beam, accomplished using a new polarimeter based on electron-photon scattering, in Hall~C at Jefferson Lab. A number of technical innovations were necessary, including a novel method for precise control of the laser polarization in a cavity and a novel diamond micro-strip detector which was able to capture most of the spectrum of scattered electrons. The data analysis technique exploited track finding, the high granularity of the detector and its large acceptan…
