The classical problem of the fluid mechanics is the problem of a supersonic motion around a thin body was generalized to the case of non-equilibrium gas. The drag and lift force coefficients were founded. It is shown that the drag and lift force coefficients in the acoustically active supersonic flow are both decreased
We perform particle-resolved simulations of subsonic and transonic flows past random arrays of spherical particles. The Reynolds number is held at $Re{\approx}300$ to ensure the flow remains in the continuum regime. At low volume fractions, the drag force increases sharply near a critical Mach number due to the formation of shock waves and reaches a maximum value when the bulk flow is supersonic. Neighbour-induced hydrodynamic interactions reduce the critical Mach number at higher volume fractions. An effective Mach number is introduced to capture the increase in compressibility effects on dra…
Flow over bluff bodies has multiple engineering applications and thus, has been studied for decades. The lift and drag coefficients are practically important in the design of many components such as automobiles, aircrafts, buildings etc. These coefficients vary significantly with Reynolds number and geometric parameters of the bluff body. In this study, we have analyzed the sensitivity of lift and drag coefficients on single and tandem elliptic cylinders to cylinder aspect ratios, angles of attack, cylinder separation, and flow Reynolds number. Sensitivity analysis with Monte-Carlo algorithm r…
The main motivation of the current study is to propose a high-pressure hydrogen injection as an hybrid active flow control technique in order to manipulate the flow-field in front of a blunt nose during hypersonic flight. Hydrogen injection can lead to self-igition under the right environment conditions in a stagnation zone, and may cause thermal heat addition through combustion and provide the counterjet effect together by pushing bow shock upstream. The axisymmetric numerical simulations for the hemispherical blunt nose are performed at a Mach 6 freestream flow with 10000 Pa pressure and 293…
Results are reported of an experimental investigation into the motion of a heavy cylinder free to move inside a water-filled drum rotating around a horizontal axis. The cylinder is observed to either co- or, counter intuitively, counter-rotate with respect to the rotating drum. The flow was measured with particle image velocimetry (PIV), and it was found that the inner cylinder significantly altered the bulk flow field from the solid-body rotation found for a fluid filled drum. In the counter-rotation case, the generated lift force allowed the cylinder to freely rotate without contact with the…
The lift and drag forces acting on a small, neutrally-buoyant spherical particle in a single-wall-bounded linear shear flow are examined via numerical computation. The effects of shear rate are isolated from those of slip by setting the particle velocity equal to the local fluid velocity (zero slip), and examining the resulting hydrodynamic forces as a function of separation distance. In contrast to much of the previous numerical literature, low shear Reynolds numbers are considered ($10^{-3} \lesssim Re_γ \lesssim 10^{-1}$). This shear rate range is relevant when dealing with particulate flow…
The lift and drag forces acting on a small spherical particle moving with a finite slip in single-wall-bounded flows are investigated via direct numerical simulations. The effect of slip velocity on the particle force is analysed as a function of separation distance for low slip and shear Reynolds numbers ($10^{-3} \leq Re_γ, Re_{\text{slip}} \leq 10^{-1}$) in both quiescent and linear shear flows. A generalised lift model valid for arbitrary particle-wall separation distances and $Re_γ, Re_{\text{slip}} \leq 10^{-1}$ is developed based on the results of the simulations. The proposed model can…
How to determine accurately and efficiently the aerodynamic forces of the aircraft in high-speed flow is one of great challenges in modern aerodynamics. In this Letter we propose a new similarity law for steady transonic-supersonic flow over thin bodies. The new similarity law is based on the local Mach number frozen principle. It depends on both the specific heat ratio and the free-stream Mach number. The new similarity law enables one to determine the lift and drag coefficients of the aircraft from that of a reference state which is more reachable. The validity of the new similarity law has …

In a recent paper, Liu, Zhu and Wu (2015, {\it J. Fluid Mech.} {\bf 784}: 304) present a force theory for a body in a two-dimensional, viscous, compressible and steady flow. In this companion paper we do the same for three-dimensional flow. Using the fundamental solution of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, we improve the force formula for incompressible flow originally derived by Goldstein in 1931 and summarized by Milne-Thomson in 1968, both being far from complete, to its perfect final form, which is further proved to be universally true from subsonic to supersonic flows. We call this…
Experimental studies are carried out to investigate the effects of the geometrical parameters with a drag reducing spike on a hemispherical forebody in a supersonic freestream of $M_\infty=2.0$ at $0^{\circ}$ angle of attack. The spike length $(l/D=0.5,1.0,1.5,2.0)$, spike stem diameter $(d/D=0.06,0.12,0.18)$, and spike tip shapes are varied and their influence on the time-averaged, and time-resolved flow field are examined. When $l/D$ increases, a significant reduction in drag ($c_d$) is achieved at $l/D=1.5$, whereas the variation in $d/D$ has only a minor effect. The intensity of the shock-…
Recently, experiments showed that forces on intruders dragged horizontally through dense, hydrostatic granular packings mainly depend on the local surface orientation and can be seen as the sum of the forces exerted on small surface elements. In order to understand such forces more deeply, we perform 2D soft-sphere molecular dynamics simulation, on similar set up, of an intruder dragged through a 50-50 bi-disperse granular packing, with diameters 0.30 and 0.34 cm. We measure, for both circular and half-circle shapes, the forces parallel (drag) and perpendicular (lift) to the drag direction as …
Developing deterministic neighborhood-informed point-particle closure models using machine learning has garnered interest in recent times from dispersed multiphase flow community. The robustness of neural models for this complex multi-body problem is hindered by the availability of particle-resolved data. The present work addresses this unavoidable limitation of data paucity by implementing two strategies: (i) by using a rotation and reflection equivariant neural network and (ii) by pursuing a physics-based hierarchical machine learning approach. The resulting machine learned models are observ…
In this work, we investigate the dynamics of vortex-induced vibration of an elastically mounted cylinder with very low values of mass and damping. We use two methods to investigate this canonical problem: first we calculate the instantaneous phase between the cylinder motion and the fluid forcing; second we decompose the total hydrodynamic force into drag and lift components that act along and normal to, respectively, the instantaneous effective angle of attack. We focus on the phase dynamics in the large-amplitude-response range, consisting of the initial, upper and lower branches of response…
We report on a series of fully resolved simulations of the flow around a rigid sphere translating steadily near a wall, either in a fluid at rest or in the presence of a uniform shear. Non-rotating and freely rotating spheres subject to a torque-free condition are both considered to evaluate the importance of spin-induced effects. The separation distance between the sphere and wall is varied from values at which the wall influence is weak down to gaps of half the sphere radius. The Reynolds number based on the sphere diameter and relative velocity with respect to the ambient fluid spans the ra…
Flow control for turbulent skin-friction drag reduction is applied to a transonic airfoil to improve its aerodynamic performance. The study is based on direct numerical simulations (with up to 1.8 billions cells) of the compressible turbulent flow around a supercritical airfoil, at Reynolds and Mach numbers of $Re_\infty= 3 \times 10^5$ and $M_\infty =0.7$. Control via spanwise forcing is applied over a fraction of the suction side of the airfoil. Besides locally reducing friction, the control modifies the shock wave and significantly improves the aerodynamic efficiency of the airfoil by incre…
The actuator line model (ALM) is a commonly used method to represent lifting surfaces such as wind turbine blades within Large-Eddy Simulations (LES). In the ALM the lift and drag forces are replaced by an imposed body force which is typically smoothed over several grid points using a Gaussian kernel with some prescribed smoothing width $ε$. To date, the choice of $ε$ has most often been based on numerical considerations related to the grid spacing used in LES. However, especially for finely resolved LES with grid spacings on the order of or smaller than the chord-length of the blade, the best…
High-fidelity simulations are performed to study active flow control techniques for alleviating deep dynamic stall of a SD7003 airfoil in plunging motion. The flow Reynolds number is $Re=60{,}000$ and the freestream Mach number is $M=0.1$. Numerical simulations are performed with a finite difference based solver that incorporates high-order compact schemes for differentiation, interpolation and filtering on a staggered grid. A mesh convergence study is conducted and results show good agreement with available data in terms of aerodynamic coefficients. Different spanwise arrangements of actuator…
Large eddy simulation of a NACA0015 circulation control airfoil using synthetic jets is conducted. A chord Reynolds number of 110000, the excitation frequency of 175 Hz, the momentum coefficients of 0.0044 to 0.0688, and the angles of attack of 0°, 6°, and 12° are employed in this study. The numerical results presented in this paper show good agreement with the experimental results. Fluctuations in the lift and drag coefficients on the non-actuated airfoil are found to be governed by the vortex shedding frequency. Provided that the momentum coefficient is sufficiently high, the lift and drag c…
Data from direct numerical simulation of open channel flow over a geometrically rough wall at a bulk Reynolds number of 2900, generated by Chan-Braun et al. ["Force and torque acting on particles in a transitionally rough open-channel flow", J. Fluid Mech. 684, 441--474 (2011), 10.1017/jfm.2011.311] are further analysed with respect to the time and length scales of force and torque acting on the wall-mounted spheres. For the two sizes of spheres in a square arrangement (11 and 49 wall units in diameter, yielding hydraulically smooth and transitionally rough flow, respectively), the spatial str…
Deep reinforcement learning-based active flow control of an elliptical cylinder: transitioning from an elliptical cylinder to a circular cylinder and a flat plate
The dynamical friction force experienced by a massive gravitating body moving through a gaseous medium is modified by sufficiently strong large-scale magnetic fields. Using linear perturbation theory, we calculate the structure of the wake generated by, and the gravitational drag force on, a body traveling in a straight-line trajectory in a uniformly magnetized medium. The functional form of the drag force as a function of the Mach number (V_0/c_s, where V_0 is the velocity of the body and c_s the sound speed) depends on the strength of the magnetic field and on the angle between the velocity …
This work provides a recipe for creating drag, lift and torque closures for static assemblies of axisymmetric, non-spherical particles. Apart from Reynolds number $Re$ and solids volume fraction $ε_s$, we propose four additional parameters to characterize the flow through non-spherical particle assemblies. Two parameters consider the mutual orientations of particles (the orientation tensor eigenvalues $S_1$ and $S_2$) and two angles represent the flow direction (polar and azimuthal angles $α$ and $β$). Interestingly, we observe that the hydrodynamic forces on the particles are independent of t…

The aerodynamics of a projectile launched from barrels of various devices is quite complicated due to its interactions with the unsteady flow field around it. A computational study using moving grid method is performed here to analyze the effect of the projectile-shock wave interaction. Cylindrical and conical projectiles have been employed to study such interactions and the fluid dynamics of such flow fields. It is found that the overall effect of projectile overtaking a blast wave on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the projectile is hardly affected by the projectile configuration…
The capability to simulate a two-way coupled interaction between a rarefied gas and an arbitrary-shaped colloidal particle is important for many practical applications, such as aerospace engineering, lung drug deliver and semiconductor manufacturing. By means of numerical simulations based on the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, we investigate the influence of the orientation of the particle and rarefaction on the drag and lift coefficients, in the case of prolate and oblate ellipsoidal particles immersed in a uniform ambient flow. This is done by modelling the solid particles usin…
The impact of turbulent fluctuations on the forces exerted by a fluid on a towed spherical particle is investigated by means of high-resolution direct numerical simulations. The measurements are carried out using a novel scheme to integrate the two-way coupling between the particle and the incompressible surrounding fluid flow maintained in a high-Reynolds-number turbulent regime. The main idea consists in combining a Fourier pseudo-spectral method for the fluid with an immersed-boundary technique to impose the no-slip boundary condition on the surface of the particle. Benchmarking of the code…
The study of cavity flow is one of the most important research topics of unsteady aerodynamics. Supersonic turbulent flows over a cavity are mostly encountered in missiles, turbomachinery, and high-speed aircraft. The turbulence inside the cavity gives rise to excess drag, acoustic waves, pressure fluctuations, and vibrations which may lead to numerous problems like excess fuel consumption, failure of missile trajectory or mechanical parts, and aerodynamic heating. We conduct numerical simulations to investigate the flow and compare our results to existing experimental data to show quantitativ…
The dynamics of dense finite-size particles in vertical channel flows of Newtonian and viscoelastic carrier fluids are examined using particle resolved simulations. Comparison to neutrally buoyant particles in the same configuration highlights the effect of settling. The particle volume fraction is $5\%$, and a gravity field acts counter to the flow direction. Despite a modest density ratio ($ρ_r = 1.15$), qualitative changes arise due to the relative velocity between the particle and fluid phases. While dense particles are homogeneously distributed in the core of the channel, the mean concent…
We simulate quasistatic flows of an ideal two-dimensional monodisperse foam around different obstacles, both symmetric and asymmetric, in a channel. We record both pressure and network contributions to the drag and lift forces, and study them as a function of obstacle geometry. We show that the drag force increases linearly with the cross section of an obstacles. The lift on an asymmetric aerofoil-like shape is negative and increases with its arc length, mainly due to the pressure contribution.
Control surface deployment in a supersonic flow has many applications, including flow control, mixing, and body-force regulation. The extent of control surface deflections introduces varying flow unsteadiness. The resulting fluid dynamics influence the downstream flow characteristics and fluid-structure interactions severely. In order to understand the gas dynamics, an axisymmetric cylindrical body with a sharp-tip cone at zero angles of attack ($α=0^\circ$) is examined in a free stream Mach number of $M_\infty=2.0$ and Reynolds number of $Re_{D}=2.16 \times 10^6$ ($D=50$ mm). Four static cont…

The rupture of a liquid film due to co-flowing turbulent shear flows in the gas phase is studied using a volume-of-fluid method. To simulate this multiphase problem, we use a simplified numerical setup where the liquid film is 'sandwiched' between two fully developed boundary layers from a turbulent channel simulation. The film deforms and eventually ruptures within the shear zone created by the co-flows. This efficient setup allows systematic variation of physical parameters to gauge their role in the aerodynamically-driven deformation and rupture of a liquid film under fully developed sheare…
This paper focuses on the active flow control of a computational fluid dynamics simulation over a range of Reynolds numbers using deep reinforcement learning (DRL). More precisely, the proximal policy optimization (PPO) method is used to control the mass flow rate of four synthetic jets symmetrically located on the upper and lower sides of a cylinder immersed in a two-dimensional flow domain. The learning environment supports four flow configurations with Reynolds numbers 100, 200, 300 and 400, respectively. A new smoothing interpolation function is proposed to help the PPO algorithm to learn …
