We have developed a numerical method based on the transfer matrix to calculate the quasimodes and lasing modes in one-dimensional random systems. Depending on the relative magnitude of the localization length versus the system size, there are two regimes in which the quasimodes are distinct in spatial profile and frequency distribution. In the presence of uniform gain, the lasing modes have one-to-one correspondence to the quasimodes in both regimes. Local excitation may enhance the weight of a mode within the gain region due to local amplification, especially in a weakly scattering system.

Arrays of quantum dot micropillar lasers are an attractive technology platform for various applications in the wider field of nanophotonics. Of particular interest is the potential efficiency enhancement as consequence of cavity quantum electrodynamics effects which makes them prime candidates for next generation photonic neurons in neural network hardware. However, in particular for optical pumping their power-conversion efficiency can be very low. Here we perform an in-depth experimental analysis of quantum dot microlasers and investigate their input-output relationship over a wide range of …
We present a Ho:YLF Chirped-Pulse Amplification (CPA) laser for pumping a longwave infrared Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplifier (OPCPA) at a 1 kHz repetition rate. By utilizing a Ti:Sapphire laser as a frontend, 5-μJ seed pulses at 2051 nm laser pulse are generated in a Dual-Chirp Optical Parametric Amplifier (DC-OPA), which are amplified to 28 mJ pulses with a pulse duration of 6.8 ps. The scheme offers a potential driver for two-color (800 nm and 8 μm) high harmonic generation with an increased keV X-ray photon flux.
In this paper, a technique combing cascaded energy-transfer pumping (CEP) method and master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) configuration is proposed for power scaling of 1.6-um-band single-frequency fiber lasers (SFFLs), where the Er3+ ion has a limited gain. The CEP technique is fulfilled by coupling a primary signal light at 1.6 um and a C-band auxiliary laser. The numerical model of the fiber amplifier with the CEP technique reveals that the energy transfer process involves the pump competition and the in-band particle transition between the signal and auxiliary lights. Moreover, for the…
An ultra-low intensity and beatnote phase noise dual-frequency vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser is built at telecom wavelength. The pump laser is realized by polarization combining two single-mode fibered laser diodes in a single-mode fiber, leading to a 100 % in-phase correlation of the pump noises for the two modes. The relative intensity noise is lower than -140 dB/Hz, and the beatnote phase noise is suppressed by 30 dB, getting close to the spontaneous emission limit. The role of the imperfect cancellation of the thermal effect resulting from unbalanced pumping of the two mo…
Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) have been generated via injection locking of chipscale microresonators to continuous-wave (CW) III-V lasers. This advance has enabled fully integrated hybrid microcomb systems that operate in turnkey mode and can access microwave repetition rates. Yet, CW-driven DKS exhibits low energy conversion efficiency and high optical power threshold, especially when the repetition rate is within the microwave range that is convenient for direct detection with off-the-shelf electronics. Efficient DKS can be generated by spatiotemporally structured light (i.e., pulsed pump…
Media featuring both optical gain and disorder, such as random lasers, represent formidable challenges as subjects of research due to the high complexity of the light propagation within them; however, dramatic advances in this nascent field have been furnished by the paradigm of applying wavefront shaping techniques to the beam pumping the system. We present here a theoretical and experimental study employing this approach in a gain medium where the disorder arises not from random scattering but rather from the multimodality of a waveguide: an amplifying multimode fiber. The shaping of the cor…
Laser-launched evanescent surface plasmon polariton field utilized as a direct coherent pumping source to generate emitted nonlinear four-wave mixing radiation
A general model for the dynamics of arrays of coupled, spin-polarised lasers is derived, which is shown to reduce to both the spin flip model in a single cavity and the coupled mode model for a pair of guides in the appropriate limit. The general model is able to deal with waveguides of any geometry with any number of supported normal modes. A unique feature of the model is that it allows for independent polarisation of the pumping in each laser. The particular geometry is shown to be introduced via `overlap factors', which are a generalisation of the optical confinement factor. These factors …

We present the controllability capabilities for the limit cycles of an extremely tunable photonic oscillator, consisting of two coupled semiconductor lasers. We show that this system supports stable limit cycles with frequencies ranging from a few to more than a hundred GHz that are characterized by a widely varying degree of asymmetry between the oscillations of the two lasers. These dynamical features are directly controllable via differential pumping as well as optical frequency detuning of the two lasers, suggesting a multi-functional oscillator for chip-scale radio-frequency photonics app…
We report the first mode-locked fiber laser to operate in the femtosecond regime well beyond 3 μm. The laser uses dual-wavelength pumping and non-linear polarisation rotation to produce 3.5 μm wavelength pulses with minimum duration of 580 fs at a repetition rate of 68 MHz. The pulse energy is 3.2 nJ, corresponding to a peak power of 5.5 kW.
We demonstrate yellow laser emission using silicate glass fiber as the gain medium. By employing core pumping using widely available GaN diode lasers with emission at 445 nm, we show that Dy3+-doped aluminosilicate glass fiber can be readily excited creating sufficient gain at 581 nm. In this proof of concept demonstration, the maximum output power generated was 3 mW with a slope efficiency approximately 1.8% with respect to injected pump.
To achieve high efficiency and good performance of spintronic terahertz sources, we propose and corroborate a remnant magnetization method to radiate continuously and stably terahertz pulses from W/CoFeB/Pt magnetic nanofilms without carrying magnets on the transmitters driven by femtosecond laser pulses. We systematically investigate the influences of the pumping central wavelength and find out the optimal wavelength for a fixed sample thickness. We also optimize the incidence angle of the pumping laser and find the emission efficiency is enhanced under oblique incidence. Combing the aforemen…
Arrays of coupled semiconductor lasers are systems possessing radically complex dynamics that makes them useful for numerous applications in beam forming and beam shaping. In this work, we investigate the spatial controllability of oscillation amplitudes in an array of coupled photonic dimers, each consisting of two semiconductor lasers driven by differential pumping rates. We consider parameter values for which each dimer's stable phase-locked state has become unstable through a Hopf bifurcation and we show that, by assigning appropriate pumping rate values to each dimer, large-amplitude osci…
Laser cooling of rare-earth doped solids has been demonstrated across a wide range of material platforms, inspiring the development of simple phenomenological models such as the four-level model to elucidate the universal properties of laser cooling under various operating conditions. However, these models usually require the input of full absorption spectra that must be provided experimentally or by additional complicated atomic modeling. In this letter, we propose that a four-level model, when extended to admit effective energy levels adaptive to the pumping photon energy, can accurately pre…
Light scattering and localization in strongly scattering disordered systems is governed by the nature of the underlying eigenmodes, specially their spatial extension within the system. One of the main challenges in studying experimentally Anderson like localized states resides in the difficulty to excite these states independently and observe them individually anywhere in the sample. The modes mutual interaction and their coupling to the sample boundaries makes it extremely challenging to isolate them spectrally and image them alone. In the presence of gain, random lasing occurs above threshol…
There is a general trend of downscaling laser cavities, but with high integration and energy densities of nanocavity lasers, signifi-cant thermal issues affect their operation. The complexity of geometrical parameters and the various materials involved hinder the extraction of clear design guidelines and operation strategies. Here, we present a systematic thermal analysis of InP-on-Si micro- and nanocavity lasers based on steady-state and transient thermal simulations and experimental analysis. In particular, we investi-gated the use of metal cavities for improving the thermal properties of In…
For the first time, lasing at NV$^{-}$ centers in an optically pumped diamond sample is achieved. A nanosecond train of 150-ps 532-nm laser pulses was used to pump the sample. The lasing pulses have central wavelength at 720 nm with a spectrum width of 20 nm, 1-ns duration and total energy around 10 nJ. In a pump-probe scheme, we investigate lasing conditions and gain saturation due to NV$^{-}$ ionization and NV$^{0}$ concentration growth under high-power laser pulse pumping of diamond crystal.
The noise feature of a single mode class-A laser is investigated in the presence (amplifier) and absence (free-running) of an input signal. The Maxwell-Bloch equations of motion have been solved after adding the cavity Langevin force to calculate fluctuations that imposed to the atomic population inversion and the amplitude and phase of cavity electric field. The correlation function of these fluctuations is then used to derive the spontaneous emission, amplitude, and phase noise fluxes in the below and above-threshold states. The bandwidth of noise fluxes is not only adjusted by the amplitude…
