In this paper we review the different relativistic and QED contributions to energies, ionic radii, transition probabilities and Landé $g$-factors in super-heavy elements, with the help of the MultiConfiguration Dirac-Fock method (MCDF). The effects of taking into account the Breit interaction to all orders by including it in the self-consistent field process are demonstrated. State of the art radiative corrections are included in the calculation and discussed. We also study the non-relativistic limit of MCDF calculation and find that the non-relativistic offset can be unexpectedly large.
The model-QED-operator approach [Phys. Rev. A 88, 012513 (2013)] to calculations of the radiative corrections to binding and transition energies in atomic systems is extended to the range of nuclear charges $110 \leqslant Z \leqslant 170$. The self-energy part of the model operator is represented by a nonlocal potential based on diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of the ab initio self-energy operator with the Dirac-Coulomb wave functions. The vacuum-polarization part consists of the Uehling contribution which is readily computed for an arbitrary nuclear-charge distribution and the Wichm…
A method for calculating the electronic levels in the compact superheavy nuclear quasi-molecules, based on solving the two-center Dirac equation using the multipole expansion of two-center potential, is developed. For the internuclear distances up to $d\sim100$~fm such technique reveals a quite fast convergence and allows for computing the electronic levels in such systems with accuracy $\sim 10^{-6} $. The critical distances $R_{cr}$ between the nuclei for $1σ_g$ and $1σ_u$ electronic levels in the region $Z\simeq 87-100$ are calculated. By means of the same technique the shifts of electronic…
Relativistic calculations of the electronic structure of the superheavy element of the eighth period $-$ eka-francium ($Z=119$) and its homologues, which form the group of alkali metals, are performed in the framework of the configuration-interaction method and many-body perturbation theory using the basis of the Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals (DFS). The obtained values of the ionization potentials, electron affinities, and root-mean-square radii are compared with the corresponding values calculated within the non-relativistic approximation. A comparison with the available experimental data and the…
We review the progress in atomic structure theory with a focus on superheavy elements and the aim to predict their ground state configuration and element's placement in the periodic table. To understand the electronic structure and correlations in the regime of large atomic numbers, it is important to correctly solve the Dirac equation in strong Coulomb fields, and also to take into account quantum electrodynamic effects. We specifically focus on the fundamental difficulties encountered when dealing with the many-particle Dirac equation. We further discuss the possibility for future many-elect…
The successive ionization potentials (IPs) and electron affinities (EAs) for superheavy elements with $111 \leq Z \leq 114$, namely, Rg, Cn, Nh, and Fl are reexamined using the relativistic Fock-space coupled-cluster method with nonperturbative single (S), double (D), and triple (T) cluster amplitudes (FS-CCSDT). For the most of considered quantities, the triple-amplitude contributions turn out to be important. The Breit and frequency-dependent Breit corrections are evaluated by means of the configuration-interaction method. The quantum-electrodynamics corrections to the IPs and EAs are taken …
We employ a fully relativistic coupled-cluster theory to calculate the ground-state electric dipole polarizability and electron correlation energy of superheavy elements Cn, Nh$^+$ and Og. To assess the trend of electron correlation as function of $Z$, we also calculate the correlation energies for three lighter homologs--Zn, Cd and Hg; Ga$^+$, In$^+$ and Tl$^+$; Kr, Xe and Rn--for each superheavy elements. The relativistic effects and quantum electrodynamical corrections are included using the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian with the corrections from the Uehling potential and the self-energy.…
We use recently developed efficient versions of the configuration interaction method to perform {\em ab initio} calculations of the spectra of superheavy elements seaborgium (Sg, $Z=106$), bohrium (Bh, $Z=107$), hassium (Hs, $Z=108$) and meitnerium (Mt, $Z=109$). We calculate energy levels, ionization potentials, isotope shifts and electric dipole transition amplitudes. Comparison with lighter analogs reveals significant differences caused by strong relativistic effects in superheavy elements. Very large spin-orbit interaction distinguishes subshells containing orbitals with a definite total e…
We apply a recently developed method (V. A. Dzuba, PRA 90, 012517 (2014); J. S. M. Ginges and V. A. Dzuba, PRA 91, 042505 (2015)) to calculate energy levels of superheavy elements Uut (Z = 113), Fl (Z = 114), and Fl+. The method combines the linearized single-double coupledcluster technigue, the all-order correlation potential method and configuration interaction method. Breit and quantum electrodynamic corrections are included. The role of relativistic and correlation effects is discussed. Similar calculations for Tl, Pb and Pb+ are used to gauge the accuracy of the calculations.
Relativistic Hartree-Fock and random phase approximation methods for open shells are used to calculate ionization potentials and static scalar polarizabilities of eight superheavy elements with open $6d$-shell, which include Db, Sg, Bh, Hs, Mt, Ds, Rg and Cn ($Z$=105 to 112). Inter-electron correlations are taken into account with the use of the semi-empirical polarization potential. Its parameters are chosen to fit the known ionization potentials of lighter atoms. Calculations for lighter atoms are also used to illustrate the accuracy of the approach.
We use recently developed method of accurate atomic calculations which combines linearized single-double coupled cluster method with the configuration interaction technique to calculate ionisation potentials, excitation energies, static polarizabilities and valence electron densities for superheavy elements Uut, Fl and Uup ($Z$=113 to 115) and their ions. The accuracy of the calculations is controlled by comparing similar calculations for lighter analogs of the superheavy elements, Tl, Pb and Bi with experiment. The role of relativistic effects and correlations is discussed and comparison with…
Relativistic and QED corrections to the $2pσ_{u}(\upsilon = 1)$ vibrational state of the $H^{+}_{2}$ molecular ion
Relativistic effective atomic configurations of superheavy elements Cn, Nh and Fl and their lighter homologues (Hg, Tl and Pb) in their simple compounds with fluorine and oxygen are determined using the analysis of local properties of molecular Kohn-Sham density matrices in the vicinity of heavy nuclei. The difference in populations of atomic spinors with the same orbital angular momentum and different total angular momenta is demonstrated to be essential for understanding the peculiarities of chemical bonding in superheavy element compounds. The results are fully compatible with those obtaine…
We calculate vacuum polarization corrections to the binding energies in neutral alkali atoms Na through to the superheavy element E119. We employ the relativistic Hartree-Fock method to demonstrate the importance of relaxation of the electronic core and the correlation potential method to study the effects of second and higher orders of perturbation theory. These many-body effects are sizeable for all orbitals, though particularly important for orbitals with angular momentum quantum number l>0. The orders of magnitude enhancement for d waves produces shifts that, for Rb and the heavier element…
A model-operator approach to fully relativistic calculations of the nuclear recoil effect on energy levels in many-electron atomic systems is worked out. The one-electron part of the model operator for treating the normal mass shift beyond the Breit approximation is represented by a sum of semilocal and nonlocal potentials. The latter ones are constructed by employing the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements rigorously evaluated for hydrogenlike ions to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio. The specific mass shift beyond the lowest-order relativistic approximation has a form …
B-spline functions have been widely used in computational atomic physics. Different from the traditional B-spline basis (a simple product of two B-splines), the recently developed correlated B-spline basis functions(C-BSBF), in which the interelectronic coordinate $r_{12}$ is included explicitly, have greatly improved the computational accuracy of polarizability [S. J. Yang \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. A \textbf{95}, 062505 (2017)] and bethe logarithm [ S. J. Yang \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. A \textbf{100}, 042509 (2019)] for singlet states of helium. Here, we report the extension of the C-BSBF…
Comparison of high accuracy calculations with precision measurement of the 413 nm tune-out wavelength of the He($2\,^3S_1$) state provides a unique test of quantum electro-dynamic (QED). We perform large-scale relativistic-configuration-interaction (RCI) calculations of the tune-out wavelength, that include the mass-shift operator, and fully account for leading relativistic nuclear recoil terms in the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit (DCB) Hamiltonian. We obtain the QED correction to the tune-out wavelength using perturbation theory, and the effect of finite nuclear size is also evaluated. The resulting tu…
A new iterative version of population projection analysis is formulated and applied to determine relativistic effective atomic configurations of superheavy elements Cn and Fl and their lighter homologues (Hg and Pb) in the molecules of their fluorides and oxides. The dependence of the computed populations on the initial reference atomic spinors is completely avoided. The difference in population of atomic spinors with the same orbital angular momentum and different total angular momenta is demonstrated to be essential for understanding the peculiarities of chemical bonding in superheavy elemen…
The hydrogen molecule has become a test ground for quantum electrodynamical calculations in molecules. Expanding beyond studies on stable hydrogenic species to the heavier radioactive tritium-bearing molecules, we report on a measurement of the fundamental T$_2$ vibrational splitting $(v= 0 \rightarrow 1)$ for $J=0-5$ rotational levels. Precision frequency metrology is performed with high-resolution coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy at an experimental uncertainty of $10-12$~MHz, where sub-Doppler saturation features are exploited for the strongest transition. The achieved accuracy corres…
The effective interaction of the electron magnetic moment anomaly with the Coulomb field of superheavy nuclei is investigated by taking into account its dynamical screening at small distances. The shift of the electronic levels, caused by this interaction, is considered for H-like atoms and for compact nuclear quasi-molecules, non-perturbatively both in $Zα$ and (partially) in $α/π$. It is shown that the levels shift reveals a non-monotonic behavior in the region $Zα>1$ and near the threshold of the lower continuum decreases both with the increasing the charge and with enlarging the size of th…
Theoretical calculations based on the Dirac--Coulomb--Breit relativistic coupled cluster method have been carried out for the electron affinities and ionization potentials of the superheavy element nihonium (Nh) and its lighter homologues In and Tl. The In and Tl calculations are in agreement with measurement within uncertainties. For Nh, where experiment is yet unknown, we predict the ionization potential of 7.569(48) eV and electron affinity of 0.776(30) eV.
Following detailed analysis of relativistic, QED and mass corrections for helium-like and lithium-like ions with static nuclei for $Z \leq 20$ the domain of applicability of Non-Relativistic QED (NRQED) is localized for ground state energy. It is demonstrated that for both helium-like and lithium-like ions with $Z \leq 20$ the finite nuclear mass effects do not change 4-5 significant digits (s.d.), and the leading relativistic and QED effects leave unchanged 3-4 s.d. in the ground state energy. It is shown that the non-relativistic ground state energy can be interpolated with accuracy not less…
The rovibrational intervals of the $^4$He$_2^+$ molecular ion in its $X\ ^2Σ_\text{u}^+$ ground electronic state are computed by including the non-adiabatic, relativistic, and leading-order quantum-electrodynamics corrections. Good agreement of theory and experiment is observed for the rotational excitation series of the vibrational ground state and the fundamental vibration. The lowest-energy rotational interval is computed to be $70.937\ 69(10)$ cm$^{-1}$ in agreement with the most recently reported experimental value, $70.937\ 589(23)(60)_\text{sys}$ cm$^{-1}$ [L.
