In this paper we revise the similarity theory for the stably stratified atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), formulate analytical approximations for the wind velocity and potential temperature profiles over the entire ABL, validate them against large-eddy simulation and observational data, and develop an improved surface flux calculation technique for use in operational models.
We use a database of direct numerical simulations to evaluate parametrizations for energy dissipation rate in stably stratified flows. We show that shear-based formulations are more appropriate for stable boundary layers than commonly used buoyancy-based formulations. As part of the derivations, we explore several length scales of turbulence and investigate their dependence on local stability.
The `local scaling' hypothesis, first introduced by Nieuwstadt two decades ago, describes the turbulence structure of stable boundary layers in a very succinct way and is an integral part of numerous local closure-based numerical weather prediction models. However, the validity of this hypothesis under very stable conditions is a subject of on-going debate. In this study, we explore several integral and outer length scales of turbulence which can be formulated by using the dissipation of temperature fluctuations ($χ$) and other relevant variables. Our analyses directly lead to simple yet non-trivial parameterizations for both $χ$ and the structure parameter of temperature ($C_T^2$). For our purposes, we make use of high-fidelity data from direct numerical simulations of stratified channel flows.
We present a laboratory experiment of the growth of a turbulent patch in a stably stratified fluid, due to a localized source of turbulence, generated by an oscillating grid. Synchronized and overlapping particle image velocimetry and planar laser induced fluorescence measurements have been conducted capturing the evolution of the patch through its initial growth until it reached a maximum size, followed by its collapse. Inertial particles in stably stratified flows play a fundamental role in geophysics, from the dynamics of nutrients in the ocean to the dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere. We consider the Maxey-Riley equation for small neutrally buoyant inertial particles in the Boussinesq approximation, and discuss its limits of validity. Large-eddy simulation (LES) is a well-established numerical technique, which resolves the most energetic turbulent fluctuations in the planetary boundary layers. Averaging these fluctuations, high-quality profiles of mean values and turbulence statistics can be obtained in experiments with well-defined initial and boundary conditions. In this paper we explore the fast rotation, nonhydrostatic limit of the rotating and stratified Boussinesq equations. We derive new reduced equations for the slow dynamics that describe Taylor-Proudman flows. One new aspect of the dynamics is a decoupling of the horizontal kinetic energy, described by 2D Navier-Stokes, from new dynamics that describe the coupling of vertical kinetic energy and buoyancy. In this study, the stability dependence of turbulent Prandtl number ($Pr_t$) is quantified via a novel and simple analytical approach. Based on the variance and flux budget equations, a hybrid length scale formulation is first proposed and its functional relationships to well-known length scales are established. We present a turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) closure scheme for the stably stratified atmosphere in which the mixing lengths for momentum and heat are not parameterized in the same manner. The key difference is that, while the mixing length for heat tends towards the stability independent mixing length for momentum in neutrally stratified conditions, it tends towards one based on the Brunt-Väisälä time scale and square root of the TKE in the limit of large stability. We investigate the effects of condensation and liquid water loading on the stably stratified surface layer, with an eye towards understanding the influence of turbulent mixing on fog formation. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of dry and moist open channel flows are conducted, where in both a constant cooling rate is applied at the ground to mimic longwave radiative cooling. A new tuning-free subgrid-scale model, termed `locally-averaged scale-dependent dynamic' (LASDD) model, is developed and implemented in large-eddy simulations (LESs) of stable boundary layers. The new model dynamically computes the Smagorinsky coefficient and the subgrid-scale Prandtl number based on the local dynamics of the resolved velocity and temperature fields. The evolution of large-scale density perturbations is studied in a stably stratified, two-dimensional flow governed by the Boussinesq equations. As is known, intially smooth density (or temperature) profiles develop into fronts in the very early stages of evolution. This results in a frontally dominated $k^{-1}$ potential energy spectrum. The fronts, initially characterized by a relatively simple geometry, spontaneously develop into severely distorted sheets that possess structure at very fine scales, and thus there is a transfer of energy from large to small scales. We extend the scaling relations of stably stratified turbulence from the geophysical regime of unity Prandtl number to the astrophysical regime of extremely small Prandtl number applicable to stably stratified regions of stars and gas giants. A transition to a new turbulent regime is found to occur when the Prandtl number drops below the inverse of the buoyancy Reynolds number, i.e. $PrRb<1$, which signals a shift of the dominant balance in the buoyancy equation. Rotation is one of the key physical mechanisms that deeply impact the evolution of stars. Helio- and asteroseismology reveal a strong extraction of angular momentum from stellar radiation zones over the whole Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The temporal instability of stably stratified flow was investigated by analyzing the Taylor-Goldstein equation theoretically. According to this analysis, the stable stratification $N^2\geq0$ has a destabilization mechanism, and the flow instability is due to the competition of the kinetic energy with the potential energy, which is dominated by the total Froude number $Fr_t^2$. A general thermodynamic argument shows that multi-component matter in full chemical equilibrium, with uniform entropy per baryon, is generally stably stratified. Convection over a wavy heated bottom wall in the air flow has been studied in experiments with the Rayleigh number $\sim 10^8$. It is shown that the mean temperature gradient in the flow core inside a large-scale circulation is directed upward, that corresponds to the stably stratified flow.
