A novel low complexity method to perform self-consistent electronic-structure calculations using the Kohn-Sham formalism of density functional theory is presented. Localization constraints are neither imposed nor required thereby allowing direct comparison with conventional cubically scaling algorithms. The method has, to date, the lowest complexity of any algorithm for an exact calculation. A simple one-dimensional model system is used to thoroughly test the numerical stability of the algorithm and results for a real physical system are also given.
The electronic structure in matter under extreme conditions is a challenging complex system prevalent in astrophysical objects and highly relevant for technological applications. We show how machine-learning surrogates in terms of neural networks have a profound impact on the efficient modeling of matter under extreme conditions. We demonstrate the utility of a surrogate model that is trained on \emph{ab initio} quantum Monte Carlo data for various applications in the emerging field of warm dense matter research.
We have investigated polyyne and cumulene prototypes based on the density-functional theory. Our independent-particle spectra show that the various carbynes can be distinguished by optical properties comparing the low-energy spectral structure as well as using very general considerations. The latter conclusion is supported by results based on the random-phase approximation including local-field effects.
We present an implicit solvent model for ab initio electronic structure calculations which is fully self-consistent and is based on direct solution of the nonhomogeneous Poisson equation. The solute cavity is naturally defined in terms of an isosurface of the electronic density according to the formula of Fattebert and Gygi (J. Comp. Chem. 23, 6 (2002)). While this model depends on only two parameters, we demonstrate that by using appropriate boundary conditions and dispersion-repulsion contributions, solvation energies obtained for an extensive test set including neutral and charged molecules…
We investigate the electronic structure, dielectric and optical properties of bismuth tellurohalides BiTeX (X = I, Cl, Br) by means of all-electron density functional theory. In particular, we present the ab initio conductivities and dielectric tensors calculated over a wide frequency range, and compare our results with the recent measurements by Akrap et al. , Makhnev et al. , and Rusinov et al. . We show how the low-frequency branch of the optical conductivity can be used to identify characteristic intra- and interband transitions between the Rashba spin-split bands in all three bismuth tell…
We propose a method for obtaining effective lifetimes of scattering electronic states for avoiding the artificially confinement of the wave function due to the use of incomplete basis sets in time-dependent electronic-structure calculations of atoms and molecules. In this method, using a fitting procedure, the lifetimes are extracted from the spatial asymptotic decay of the approximate scattering wave functions obtained with a given basis set. The method is based on a rigorous analysis of the complex-energy solutions of the Schr{ö}dinger equation. It gives lifetimes adapted to any given basis …
A theoretical study of the dynamical dielectric response of bulk lead at low energies is presented. The calculations are performed with full inclusion of the electron band structure calculated by means of a first-principles pseudopotential approach. The effect of including the spin-orbit splittings in the band structure is analyzed, together with dynamical exchange-correlation and local-field effects. Excitations are studied in detail, showing the presence at small momenta of acoustic-like dispersing excitations. The character of these modes with sound-like dispersion depends on the direction …
The properties of hydrogen under extreme conditions are important for many applications, including inertial confinement fusion and astrophysical models. A key quantity is given by the electronic density response to an external perturbation, which is probed in X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) experiments -- the state of the art diagnostics from which system parameters like the free electron density $n_e$, the electronic temperature $T_e$, and the charge state $Z$ can be inferred. In this work, we present highly accurate path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) results for the electronic density response…
Lanthanide-based single-ion magnetic molecules can have large magnetic hyperfine interactions as well as large magnetic anisotropy. Recent experimental studies reported tunability of these properties by changes of chemical environments or by application of external stimuli for device applications. In order to provide insight onto the origin and mechanism of such tunability, here we investigate the magnetic hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole interactions for $^{159}$Tb nucleus in TbPc$_2$ (Pc=phthalocyanine) single-molecule magnets using multireference ab-initio methods including spin-orbit inter…
Neural-network quantum states have been successfully used to study a variety of lattice and continuous-space problems. Despite a great deal of general methodological developments, representing fermionic matter is however still early research activity. Here we present an extension of neural-network quantum states to model interacting fermionic problems. Borrowing techniques from quantum simulation, we directly map fermionic degrees of freedom to spin ones, and then use neural-network quantum states to perform electronic structure calculations. For several diatomic molecules in a minimal basis s…
The marriage of density functional theory (DFT) and deep learning methods has the potential to revolutionize modern computational materials science. Here we develop a deep neural network approach to represent DFT Hamiltonian (DeepH) of crystalline materials, aiming to bypass the computationally demanding self-consistent field iterations of DFT and substantially improve the efficiency of ab initio electronic-structure calculations. A general framework is proposed to deal with the large dimensionality and gauge (or rotation) covariance of DFT Hamiltonian matrix by virtue of locality and is reali…
We perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation of liquid water in the canonical ensemble at ambient conditions using the SCAN meta-GGA functional approximation, and carry out systematic comparisons with the results obtained from the GGA-level PBE functional, and Tkatchenko-Scheffler van der Waals (vdW) dispersion correction inclusive PBE functional. We analyze various properties of liquid water including radial distribution functions, oxygen-oxygen-oxygen triplet angular distribution, tetrahedrality, hydrogen bonds, diffusion coefficients, ring statistics, density of states, band ga…
