The results of an extensive operation of a Vacuum Spark plasma using Titanium electrodes in a 120 ns 150 kA discharge are presented. The hot spots are found to form with a regular spacing in a zippering Z-pinch plasma, which forms close to the cathode and extends to approximately two thirds of the anode separation over a period of a few ns. The axis of the discharge is well defined by an initial plasma from a Nd:YAG laser focussed onto the cathode electrode surface. The statistics of the formation of the hot spots are given for the life of one anode electrode. Between one and three hotspots form and the favored positions are at 1.5 and 3.0 mm from the cathode and the strongest emission, as observed in a filtered X-ray pinhole camera, comes from the hot spot closest to the cathode. The emission spectra resolved between 50 and 350 Åshows a wide range of Ti ionization which allows the temperatures of the anode blow off plasma, the Z-pinch and the hot spot plasma to be distinguished. These results are compared with filtered PIN diode signals and filtered pinhole images.
A technique to generate jets of pure Titanium plasma is presented. A Ti wire is exploded in an Alumina capillary sealed with 1atm. of air inside. The generated plasma emerges from the capillary (to a high-vacuum environment) by ripping a thin Ti foil that seals one of the capillary ends. The generated plasma jets have a velocity of up to $4.5\pm0.5mm/μs$, an electron temperature of $1.5\pm0.5eV$ and a ion density of $2.7\pm1\times10^{17}/cc$. The plasma source was designed for a capillary discharge extreme ultraviolet laser experiment, but might also be useful to other application such as a ta…
The detail structure of energy output and the dynamic characteristics of electric spark discharge process have been studied to calculate the energy of electric spark induced plasma under different discharge condition accurately. A series of electric spark discharge experiments were conducted with the capacitor stored energy in the range of 10J 100J and 1000J respectively. And the resistance of wire, switch and plasma between electrodes were evaluated by different methods. An optimized method for electric resistance evaluation of the full discharge circuit, three poles switch and electric spark…
Spark plasma discharges induce vortex rings and a hot gas kernel. We develop a model to describe the late stage of the spark induced flow and the role of the vortex rings in the entrainment of cold ambient gas and the cooling of the hot gas kernel. The model is tested in a plasma-induced flow, using density and velocity measurements obtained from simultaneous stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (S-PIV) and background oriented schlieren (BOS). We show that the spatial distribution of the hot kernel follows the motion of the vortex rings, whose radial expansion increases with the electrical …
Streamer discharges are thin plasma channels that precede lightning and sparks. They usually evolve in bundles as stochastic tree-like structures and are inherently difficult to model due to their multiscale nature. In this paper, we perform a computer investigation of positive streamer discharges in air using contemporary photoionization models. We report on three-dimensional computer simulations under conditions that are available in laboratory spark-gap experiments. The solutions demonstrate a multiscale morphology consisting of streamer fluctuations, branching, and the formation of a disch…
In this contribution, nanosecond pulsed discharges in N$_{2}$ and N$_{2}$/0.9% H$_{2}$O at atmospheric pressure (at 300 K) are studied with time-resolved imaging, optical emission spectroscopy and Rayleigh scattering. A 170 ns high voltage pulse is applied across two pin-shaped electrodes at a frequency of 1 kHz. The discharge consists of three phases: an ignition phase, a spark phase and a recombination phase. During the ignition phase the emission is mainly caused by molecular nitrogen (N$_{2}$(C-B)). In the spark and recombination phase mainly atomic nitrogen emission is observed. The emiss…
Spark discharges induce a complex flow field consisting of a shock wave at early times (~ 1 $μ$ s), a pair of vortex rings, and a hot gas kernel. The vortex rings entrain ambient gas into the hot gas kernel and control its cooling and expansion. In this work, we investigate the shock wave's contribution in producing the vortex ring vorticity. We analyze high-speed (700 kHz) schlieren images of the shock wave for a range of electrical energies to measure the shock properties and estimate shock velocity and curvature. These measurements are combined with a model to calculate the vorticity genera…
We study the development of a negative discharge driven by a Marx generator of about 1 MV in an air gap of 1 up to 1.5 meter, at standard temperature and pressure. We show the evolution of the discharge with nanosecond-fast photography together with the electrical characteristics. The negative discharge develops through four well-distinguished streamer bursts. The streamers have different velocities and life times in different bursts. The last burst triggers a positive inception cloud on the positive grounded electrode and a burst of positive counter-streamers emerges. The pre-discharge then b…
The cooling process associated with the flow induced by a spark plasma discharge generated between a pair of electrodes is measured using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (S-PIV) and background oriented schlieren (BOS). Density measurements show that the hot gas kernel initially cools fast by convective cooling, followed by a slower cooling process. The cooling rates during the fast regime range from being 2 to 10 times those in the slower regime. An analytical model is developed to relate the cooling observed in the fast regime from BOS, to the total entrainment of cold ambient fluid p…
We investigate experimentally the plasma dynamics of a centimeter-scale, laser filamentation-guided spark discharge. Using electrical and optical diagnostics to study monopolar discharges with varying current pulses we show that plasma decay is dominated by free electron recombination if the current decay time is shorter than the recombination characteristic time. In the opposite case, the plasma electron density closely follows the current evolution. We demonstrate that this criterion holds true in the case of damped AC sparks, and that alternative current is the best option to achieve a long…
Some features of neutron emission from dense plasma focus suggest that the participating deuterons have energy in the range of 105 eV and have a directionality of toroidal motion. Theoretical models of these devices assume that the plasma evolves through a purely irrotational flow and thus fail to predict such solenoidal flow on the scale of the plasma dimensions. Predictions of a relaxation theory are consistent with experimental data [S K H Auluck, Physics of Plasmas,18, 032508 (2011)], but the assumptions upon which it is based are not compatible with known features of these devices. There …
In this work, we present an experimental study of nanosecond high-voltage discharges in a pin-to-pin electrode configuration at atmospheric conditions operating in single-pulse mode (no memory effects). Various discharge parameters, including voltage, current, gas density, rotational/vibrational/gas temperature, and electron number density, were measured. Several different measurement techniques were used, including microwave Rayleigh scattering, laser Rayleigh scattering, optical emission spectroscopy enhanced with a nanosecond probing pulse, fast photography, and electrical parameter measure…
The plasma parameters such as electron distribution function and electron density of three atmospheric-pressure transient discharges namely filamentary and homogeneous dielectric barrier discharges in air, and the spark discharge of argon plasma coagulation (APC) system are determined. A combination of numerical simulation as well as diagnostic methods including current measurement and optical emission spectroscopy (OES) based on nitrogen emissions is used. The applied methods supplement each other and resolve problems, which arise when these methods are used individually. Nitrogen is used as …
We investigate the influence of ultrashort laser filaments on high-voltage discharges and spark-free unloading at various repetition rates and wind conditions. For electric fields well below, close to and above the threshold for discharges, we respectively observe remote spark-free unloading, discharge suppression, and discharge guiding. These effects rely on an indirect consequence of the thermal deposition, namely the fast dilution of the ions by the shockwave triggered by the filament at each laser shot. This dilution drastically limits recombination and increases the plasma channel conduct…
Formation of near-cathode plasma at the instant of breakdown of the air gap was studied by the methods of picosecond laser probing. It was demonstrated that 1-2 ns after a sharp rise of the current through the discharge gap dense plasma clots with Ne~10^20 cm^-3 and dNe/dx ~ 10^24 cm^-4 are formed on the cathode surface. It was shown that these highly ionized regions lead to initiation and development of the spark channel originating from the cathode. We propose that the observed formations correspond to erosive plasma formed from the cathode material.
We present a space and time resolved interferometric plasma diagnostic for use on plasmas where neutral-bound electron contribution to the refractive index cannot be neglected. By recording simultaneously the plasma optical index at 532 and 1064 nm, we are able to extract independently the neutral and free electron density profiles. We report a phase resolution of 30 mrad, corresponding to a maximum resolution on the order of $4\times10^{23}~\mathrm{m}^{-3}$ for the electron density, and of $10^{24} ~ \mathrm{m}^{-3}$ for the neutral density. The interferometer is demonstrated on centimeter-sc…
We investigate structure and evolution of long positive spark breakdown; and we study at which stage pulses of hard X-rays are emitted. Positive high-voltage pulses of standardized lightning impulse wave form of about 1 MV were applied to about 1 meter of ambient air. The discharge evolution was imaged with a resolution of tens of nanoseconds with an intensified CCD camera. LaBr3(Ce+) scintillation detectors recorded the X-rays emitted during the process. The voltage and the currents on both electrodes were measured synchronously. All measurements indicate that first a large and dense corona o…
Target temperature in magnetron sputtering systems is a significant parameter which not only affects the physical and chemical properties of the deposited film but also stimulates the reactive sputtering process. Therefore, it is of great interest to establish a relationship between the target temperature and other parameters of magnetron sputtering process such as the gas pressure and the discharge power. This paper is devoted to the experimental and numerical studies on titanium target temperature in Argon medium. Numerical simulations for the target temperature are performed by solving the …
The highly resolved temporal evolution of laser-induced micro-explosions on a germanium surface is studied in a triode configuration for various gate charge levels and cathode currents. Electron emission from individual spots is directly imaged with a luminescence screen, showing that the opening angle of the source is about 30$^\circ$. Electron bunches of several nanocoulombs per pulse in a time interval of about 150 ns are directly extracted to the anode without vacuum breakdown in the cathodic gap. When breakdown occurs, a remarkable change in the arc behavior of a threshold gap potential o…
In this work, the effect of flashing corona enhancement by introducing Teflon dielectric enclosure in vicinity to the electrode assembly was studied. The discharge operating in air without the dielectric was able to operate within a very narrow voltage range of approximately 200 V. The pulsing frequency was below 1.2 kHz and current peaks were below 14 mA. Increasing the applied voltage onto the positive electrode beyond this range would result in sparks between the electrodes. When the Teflon tube enclosure surrounding the high voltage electrode was used, the window of stable flashing corona …
HiPIMS plasmas generate energetic metal ions at the substrate as a major difference to conventional direct current magnetron sputtering. The origin of these ions is still an open issue, which is unraveled by using two fast diagnostics: time resolved mass spectrometry with a temporal resolution of 2 $μ$s and phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy with a temporal resolution of 1 $μ$s. A power scan from dcMS-like to HiPIMS plasmas was performed, with a 2-inch magnetron and a titanium target as sputter source and argon as working gas. Clear differences in the transport as well in the energet…
Paper presents a review of modern works on the gasdynamic flow control using a heat release in highly nonequilibrium pulsed plasma. The major attention is paid to the effects based on ultrafast (on nanosecond time scale at atmospheric pressure) local heating of the gas, since at present the main successes in high-speed flow control using gas discharges are associated with namely this thermal effect. The physical mechanisms that control the interaction of the discharges with gas flows are considered in detail. The first part of the review briefly describes the most popular approaches in plasma …
Microplasma arrays operating in helium in a DC regime have been produced in silicon microre-actors. Cathode boundary layer (CBL) type microdevices were elaborated using clean room facilities and semiconductor processing techniques. Ignition of the micro-discharge arrays having either 50 or 100 m diameter cavities was studied. Two different structures (isotropically etched or anisotropically etched cavity) and various conditions (the two different voltage polarities, pressures etc.) were investigated. 100 microdis-charges of 50 m diameter could be ignited in parallel at 1000 torr. At high curre…
