Experimental observations consistent with Self Organized Criticality (SOC) have been obtained in the electrostatic floating potential fluctuations of a dc glow discharge plasma. Power spectrum exhibits a power law which is compatible with the requirement for SOC systems. Also the estimated value of the Hurst exponent (self similarity parameter), H being greater than 0.5, along with an algebraic decay of the autocorrelation function, indicate the presence of temporal long-range correlations, as may be expected from SOC dynamics. This type of observations in our opinion has been reported for the first time in a glow discharge system.
The phenomena of electric field reversal in glow discharges is discussed. Several models are described and the link between the electric field reversal, electron's trapping and the discharge structure is analyzed.

A numerical study of normal glow discharge properties was performed in the case of small electrodes separations (0.05-0.4 cm) and moderate gas pressures (10-46 Torr). A recently observed new experimental effect of a considerable reduction in the normal current density for smaller discharge lengths was analyzed both by means of 2D fluid model and by a minimal 1D drift model of gas discharge. A good agreement between theoretical and experimental behaviour was demonstrated. An influence of the electrodes separation and of the gas heating on the value of the normal current density is discussed.
Dusty plasma crystals have traditionally been observed and studied in radio frequency (RF) discharge plasmas and their formation in a DC glow discharge plasma remains experimentally challenging. Transition from chaotic to ordered state has been observed during the initial stage of a discharge in a cylindrical dc glow discharge plasma. The influence of nitrogen impurities on the parameters of the self-sustained normal dc glow discharge at atmospheric pressure was studied. The concentrations of the low-excited helium atoms in states 2_1s, 2_1p, 2_3s and 2_3p were determined in the atmospheric pressure glow discharge in helium (99.98%He) and in helium with a nitrogen admixture. An alternative explanation to the mechanism behind self-sustained oscillations of ions in direct current (DC) glow discharges is provided. We study the dynamic contraction a self-sustained glow discharge in air in a rectangular duct with convective cooling. A two dimensional numerical model of the plasma contraction was developed in a cylindrical frame. The process is described by a set of time-dependent continuity equations for the electrons, positive and negative ions; gas and vibrational temperature; and equations which account for the convective heat and plasma losses by the transverse flux. In a recent paper Sijacic and Ebert have systematically studied the transition from Townsend to glow discharge, refering to older work from von Engel (1934) up to Raizer (1991), and they stated a strong dependendence on secondary emission $γ$ from the cathode. We here show that the earlier results of von Engel and Raizer on the small current expansion about the Townsend limit actually are the limit of small $γ$ of the new expression; and that for larger $γ$ the old and the new results vary by no more than a factor of 2. This paper presents the application of two classical models to high-resolution electric field measurements carried out in a hollow cathode discharge operated in pure hydrogen plasma. The electric field determination has been done via the Stark shifting and splitting of the 2S level of hydrogen, followed by optogalvanic detection. In this paper non-linear dynamics of a periodically forced excitable glow discharge plasma has been studied. The experiments were performed in glow discharge plasma where excitability was achieved for suitable discharge voltage and gas pressure. The plasma was first perturbed by a sub-threshold sawtooth periodic signal, and we obtained small sub-threshold oscillations. We studied the macro evolution of the micro atmospheric glow discharge generated between a micro argon jet into ambient air and static water. The micro discharge behaves similarly to a complex ecosystem. Non-linear behaviors are found for the micro discharge when the water acts as a cathode, different from the discharge when water behaves as an anode. The results of a detailed kinetic study of the main plasma chemical processes in non-equilibrium ethanol/argon plasma are presented. It is shown that at the beginning of the discharge the molecular hydrogen is mainly generated in the reaction of ethanol H-abstraction. Later hydrogen is formed from active H, CH2OH and CH3CHOH and formaldehyde. Comparison with experimental data has shown that the used kinetic mechanism predicts well the concentrations of main species at the reactor outlet.
Experimental evidence of intrinsic noise induced coherence resonance in a glow discharge plasma is being reported. We demonstrated experimentally canard induced mixed mode oscillations (MMO) in an excitable glow discharge plasma, and the results are validated through numerical solution of the FitzHugh Nagumo (FHN) model. A detailed collisional-radiative model for Ar at intermediate and high pressures is developed. The model is coupled with the electron Boltzmann equation and includes several highly excited Ar states and charged particles. The densities of all neutral and charged species considered are calculated self-consistently. Detailed information concerning the electronic data used is presented. The model will be further used for analysing the contraction phenomena in noble gas discharges and eventually for theoretical description of the kinetic properties of high pressure Ar excimer laser.

We have studied glow discharges in neon and argon with $\text{Al}_2 \text{O}_3$ polydisperse particles and melamine-formaldehyde monodisperse particles with the diameter of $\text{4.83} \; μm$. We used optical emission spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence methods to measure shift of excited atoms populations, which led to similar results. Seven new 3D modes of self-organization in DC glow discharges are computed in the framework of the simplest self-consistent model of glow discharge. Some of the modes branch off from and rejoin the 1D mode, while others bifurcate from a 2D or a 3D mode. The patterns associated with computed 3D modes are similar to patterns observed in the experiment. The computed transition from a spot pattern comprising five spots into a pattern comprising a ring spot also was observed in the experiment.

Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) based time-scale and multi-fractal analyses have been carried out on the anode glow related nonlinear floating potential fluctuations in a hollow cathode glow discharge plasma. Stochastic Resonance (SR) and Coherence Resonance (CR) have been studied experimentally in the discharge plasma close to a homoclinic bifurcation. For the SR phenomena, it is observed that a superimposed subthreshold periodic signal can be recovered via stochastic modulations of the discharge voltage. This work focuses on the benchmarking between a zero-dimensional (0D) global model (LoKI) and a one-dimensional (1D) radial fluid model for the positive column of oxygen DC glow discharges in a tube of 1 cm inner radius at pressures between 0.5 Torr and 10 Torr. The data used in the two models are the same, so that the difference between the models is reduced to dimensionality. The present letter extends the prior findings on self-induced heating of solid state field emission devices. The axial light distributions in parallel-plate dc microdischarges in argon show similar behavior to large scale discharges. Between the low-current Townsend mode and the high current glow mode exists a large region of currents where different oscillations appear and the dynamic Volt-Ampere characteristic shows hysteresis behavior. During the oscillations the maximum peak intensity moves closer to the cathode, which is characteristic for the abnormal glow regime even though the average current is considerably smaller.
The formation of electron groups is a common phenomenon in gas discharges and space plasmas. We describe similarities between electron kinetics in solar wind, cathode region of glow discharges, and magnetic nozzles.
